One of my current projects that I’ve been working on for quite some time is getting close to completion. It’s a Guest Cottage that consists of a single room that shares the Living, Dining, and Kitchen space. The Bathroom and closet are the only rooms closed off from the rest of the space.

This has been one of my favorite projects to work on….it’s unique and a complete departure from the rest of my client’s main home. It’s not everyday that I get to work on a cute “Boutique Hotel Room” or “Studio Apartment” and that’s what this feels like!

My reason for writing this post is primarily because we are getting close to having the space professionally photographed and it has got to be perfectly polished, prepped and styled! We incorporated a cute little bar cart near the small Kitchen to double as extra storage and serving space. The question is…..how should we style it?

There are so many different options when it comes to styling a bar cart. We will not be using this cart to serve up cocktails. This particular cart will not be loaded up with the typical spirits, liquor and bar glasses…..we’ll need to take a more creative and functional approach to loading this baby up. Here’s a little peek at our cart.

(sorry, couldn’t help myself….playing around with Instagram)

Here are a few carts that I love and find great design inspiration in. Even though ours won’t include the liquor bottles, I can still grab some ideas from each of these photos and make them my own. I love the idea of fresh flowers and fruit, colorful sodas and candies, and what’s that you say….sports equipment – why not!!

Source

This one gets me with the simplicity and elegance….I love the subtle color scheme used to pull everything together.

Here’s my list below of things to experiment with. Of course I haven’t come up with a “theme” or “concept” yet….will it be breakfast, a casual party, simple extra storage, dry food storage, book storage, a place for dishes and extra serving wear. We already have a coffee station so need for that. Our primary goal is to make sure the house guests and comfortable and have everything they could ever need….even things they may not know they need.

1. A lamp

2. Fresh flowers

3. Fresh fruit

4. Monochromatic color scheme

5. Artwork

6. Books

7. Tea set

8. Trays and baskets

9. Colorful organic soda and bottles of water (seltzer bottles)

10. Dry food goods (crackers, biscotti, pretzels)

I’ll be sharing photos of the finished and styled cart as well as the rest of the space soon so keep you eye out!

I often reflect and think about how lucky I am to get to do what I love everyday. Even after a day like this past Friday. It was a hectic day….I really feel like I’ve just recovered from all of the chaos and running around (no need to go to the gym). You see I’ve been working with a lovely couple for quite some time on their Kitchen renovation which included a new layout and furniture for their adjacent Breakfast Room and Keeping Room.

The issue wasn’t with the planning, designing, construction or installation of the Kitchen…that actually was the easy part and went very quick and smooth…..and might I say that it turned out amazing. I can’t wait to share the finished photos with you. The frustration wasn’t with any of that, it has been with things that are completely out of our control.

The headache has been waiting on their custom furniture for the adjacent rooms. We selected the most beautiful chairs for them to enjoy their morning coffee routine, a gorgeous sofa fitted with the perfect cream colored herringbone fabric and several other pieces. If you want to see a glimpse into what we’ve selected, you can check it out here.

Our chairs and couple other pieces finally arrived last week, but the sofa fabric is still on back order and we’re just not willing to select an alternative fabric at this point because it’s perfect! My dear clients have patiently waited for everything to arrive and when some items did last week we were ecstatic! Especially since they were entertaining over the weekend and wanted use their new furniture. Here’s the next wrench thrown into the equation, my lovely delivery company could not install their new furniture until the following week. I adore them but that just wasn’t going to work and I wasn’t going to have my clients waiting another minute so off I drove with my awesome intern Stephanie to the receiver to pick up and deliver the furniture. Did I mention that it took two trips, 45 minutes each way, a little creative packing and a even some assembly.

I’m not complaining, not one little bit, I absolutely adore my job….I’m the luckiest girl in the world. It just got me thinking…..because this is not an unusual day for me as an Interior Designer, it’s actually quite normal. Just out of curiosity, how many hats do Interior Designers wear. Let’s see how many I can come up with today….should be fun!!

1. Handyman/ Handywoman: We often have to fix things, put them together, and/ or take them apart.

2. Installers: This can include hanging art and window treatments.

3. Artists: We use our talents to throw pen, pencil, and marker to paper in order to convey our thoughts and vision.

4. Cleaning Co.: We can often find ourselves vacuuming, dusting, shining, polishing, wiping, clearing, moving and putting things away to make sure things always look their best.

5. Accountants: We’re not bankers but can quite often feel this way….cash flow control is vital to keep a design firm comfortably afloat.

6. IT guys: Keeping up with websites, programs and software is a must.

7. Project managers: The success of a project hinges on great project management skills and a great designer can do this in their sleep.

8. Marriage Counselors: I hear occasionally couples don’t agree and the designer needs to get involved without picking sides.

9. Mediators: We try to keep the peace (or at least I do) between builders, contactors, installers, homeowners, etc. Things can get done a lot smoother and quicker if we can all respect each other and get along.

10. Supervisors: Constant follow up and checking in to be sure nothing falls through the cracks. It seems as though at least 4 calls or emails are needed to get one little task completed. It’s never once and done.

11. Human Resources: Hiring and firing of staff

12. Schedulers: Calling and coordinating contractors and installers is an everyday event.

13. Organizers: Without good organization skills things call fall through the cracks, get forgotten about and ultimately never done.

14. Receivers: Beautiful new things arrive all the time

15. Delivery guys: Whether it’s artwork, rugs, accessories, or furniture, there is always something to be hauled from point A to point B.

16. Accounts Receivable: Someone has to make sure that invoices are getting paid on time so that everything can get ordered on time.

17. Accounts Payable: Someone has to pay the bills.

18. Principles: Someone needs to oversee the overall vision of the company and assure that every project and client interaction reflects that.

19. Managers: Having to assure that the office is running smoothly, everyone is on task and doing what needs to get done.

20. Marketers: We all know that there’s more to it than the business side, if you’re not marketing your business consistently, no one will know who you are and why they should want to work with you.

I know there are so many more hats…..I could literally go on and on but here you have my top 20. I’d love to hear your thoughts and some of the many hats you wear. I love all of my hats equally and I feel lucky to get to wear so many. I guess you could say I never get bored…my closet is full of a huge selection of many, many fantastic hats and I love them all!

If you or your spouse are super football fans like me and my hubby then you know that Super Bowl XLVI is quickly approaching (February 5th to be exact). Are you ready for the big day, is your Man Cave up to par? It’s not too late to put together the perfect Man Cave for you and your family and friends to enjoy.

If you’ve been thinking about designing and building out your perfect Man Cave, don’t go about it in the dark without a plan. When we began thinking about what our space would look like, we started with a mood board. Thank you Leslie Carothers for recently introducing me to the wonderful 3D Mood Board creator, OLIOBOARD! It’s a perfect way to work out what your space will “feel” and look like on paper before you ever get started. You can check out my first ever 3D mood board here…it was so easy to use, anyone can do it! Be sure to head on over and try it out for yourself.

My Top 10 Man Cave Must Haves

#1 Theme: Start with an overall theme for your man cave, or two or three…what ever you’re in to and whatever makes you happy. Racing, sports, nautical, hunting, football, baseball, golf…skies the limit! We went with an overall sports theme, playing up a common sports shape, “the circle” and featuring the Pantone 2012 color of the year, “Tangerine Tango”!

#2 Equipment: Make sure all of your equipment is up to par…after all, that’s what everyone is most likely there to experience. Televisions, music, surround sound, should all be at the top of the list.

#3 Seating: Whether you have room for a sectional, theater type stadium seating, recliners, or chairs and ottomans, be sure to invest in the very best you can afford. Sporting events can last for hours on end and you want to make sure you and your guests are comfortable all the way to the final buzzer.

#4 Serving: If you have the space a full bar area may be in order. You may also want to include extras like a kegerator or humidor if you find it fitting.

#5 Recreation: Who says Man Caves are only for watching the big game? Give you and your guests a break from watching sports by including some recreational activities like game tables, a dart board, putting green, poker table, gaming systems. You’ll be the envy of all of your friends and you’ll never have to leave home for a good time!

#6 Decorative: This is how you can set your Man Cave above the rest….be sure to include all of those extras like artwork, neon signs, sports memorabilia, hunting and fishing trophies, sports trophies and special photos. If you’re in need of some design inspiration for your room, head on over to Spirit of Sports. They are the world’s largest online gallery of sports related artwork and gift items. I used one of their paintings in my Man Cave…isn’t this football abstract gorgeous!!

#7 Lighting: Be sure to set the right mood in your new space. Use neon, strobe lights, disco balls, colored bulbs, mood, accent, and decorative lighting to pull off your theme just right. Choose wisely as this is one of the most important elements in any room!

#8 Flooring: Let’s face it, with the big game well underway, the last thing most are concerned about is spillage. With all of the food and beverages that are consumed in the average Man Cave, be sure your flooring can withstand the excitement! Use hard surfaces that can easily be cleaned and area rugs that you can whisk off to the cleaners.

#9 Sound: If adjacent rooms or areas around your space don’t want to be in on the festivities, it might not be a bad idea to look into sound proofing your new Man Cave.

#10 Restroom: Let’s face it ladies, we don’t want to share our bathroom with a bunch of men hopped up on sports and hoagies. We’ll be just as happy as them if they have their very own bathroom….through in a urinal and you’ll have the happiest man alive!

I’m sure by now you’ve probably heard somewhere that Pantone’s 2012 Color of Year is Tangerine Tango and if you’re not too tired of hearing about it by now, I’d love to put in my two cents! I’m thrilled with the color, it makes me happy! I’ve been using the color quite a bit over the last few months in some current projects…who knew! Check out the end of this post for a little project “Sneak Peek”!!

There are countless ways to use this bright, fiery color….shall we count the ways? Um, maybe not…let’s make this easy. Just because we’re talking about a bold, bright color here, that doesn’t mean your rooms have to scream “Tropicana Orange”. If you want to use it in your home or office space below are my top three ways to use this amazing color successfully. If done right, your family and friend’s shouldn’t be reaching for their sunglasses when they visit.

TIP #1: Use it in the background. Let your wall color set the tone for your space. In my opinion, this is the boldest and most dramatic way to use the color. No hiding it here. If you’re daring, go for it…paint your walls and allow everything else in the space to remain neutral. I love how Jeffrey Bilhuber painted the walls of this lovely sitting room a gorgeous shade of Tangerine. Notice how the drapery panels are the same color as the walls allowing this fantastic and bold color to envelope the entire space!

“BOLD” BACKGROUND

Tip #2: Try using this daring color on objects in the foreground of your rooms. Work with a neutral wall color and let pieces like the accent furniture and window treatments be the show stoppers of the space. The drapery panels in this room designed by Jeffrey Bilhuber are sure to catch your eye!

Tip #3: If you’re not ready to commit to this trendy color fully, you may want to reserve it for the accent pieces in your space. Things like accessories and accents can easily be changed later on as your love for this amazing color fades. Tastes and trends change quickly so use it sparingly in the accents to make a little tangerine splash! Check out this amazing room designed by Jeffrey Bilhuber. I am in love with the lacquered orange ceiling…can you imagine?

“AMAZING” ACCENT

“SNEAK PEEK”

Here’s a little peek into one of my latest projects, you can read some of the project details here. We have finished the build out of the Sun Room, installed the area rugs and most of the furniture. This month we will finish things up with window treatments, artwork and accessories! Can wait to share the finished project photos with you! But until then, here’s how we’re using Tangerine Tango throughout the space.

In our concept board below, you can see that we’ve decided to use this bold color in the foreground finishes as well as some of the accent accessories because we love it! It shows up bravely in the area rugs, accent chairs, lamps and artwork.

Here’s a small glimpse into the room as it currently stands…it’s just begging for the window treatments (currently in the workroom), artwork (here in my studio), and accessories (fresh flowers too) to be installed. You won’t believe what a difference a few finishing touches make…stay tuned!!

While reading my latest edition of Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles magazine (January 2012), I came across an article that grabbed my attention and sparked some thought. Matthew Quinn of Design Galleria Is and Atlanta Kitchen designer and he contributed his top 25 Kitchen Tips. I thought it was a great list and I’ve included my favorite five below. If you’re interested in seeing the list, you can read the article in it’s entirety here.

Design Galleria

My top 5 picks from Matthew’s list are as follows:

1. If you select a polished (glossy) countertop then select a back splash with a matte (not glossy) finish or in other words if you choose a honed countertop (not shiny) then choose a backsplash that is polished or glazed with a shiny finish. I have seen many exceptions to this rule that have worked beautifully but this is great guideline when selecting materials.

Betty Lou Phillips

2. When installing a garbage disposal, always use an air switch. This will help avoid one more switch in the backsplash or the need to open a cabinet with wet hands to flip the switch. I love this tip…it is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Susan Dossetter

3. We’ve often seen mirror used in the back of a bookcase (Candice Olsen does this beautifully) but have you ever thought to use mirror in an upper cabinet door front in lieu of glass. He suggests using mirror in ‘”dormer” cabinets to create the illusion of a higher ceiling. Dormer cabinets are the second row of upper cabinets (see the first photo above for detail). This photo shows dormer cabinets with clear glass.

Tobi Fairley

4. I found this tip most interesting….about 90% of the time he he panels all of the appliances in a Kitchen. Strong architecture in the space dictates his decision. If the room has strong architectural bones, it doesn’t need a huge stainless appliance standing upright in the room. But if the architecture is not that interesting, a stainless element can be a grounding component to balance a large range…..not sure?

Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles

5. When selecting finishes for a new Kitchen design, he starts with the floor, then selects the countertops, backsplash, and finally the cabinets. This was the part of the article that got me thinking. Was this the order in which I typically select Kitchen finishes during a renovation…kind of,…but no, not really. And let me explain why.

Architectural Digest

In selecting finishes for a recent Kitchen renovation project, we approached our finish selection order just a little different. And because it was a renovation of a 1950’s bungalow, we first paid close attention to the existing fixed finishes…the things that were not changing in the adjacent rooms. Those two things were the hardwood floors stained a warm medium brown and the trim color throughout the entire house painted a creamy white. To see our latest Kitchen renovation in progress and how we started the entire process of selecting finishes, check it out here.

We are getting very close to wrapping up one of our latest projects….a Kitchen renovation. We were hired to completely redesign and renovate the Kitchen as well as the adjacent Dining Room and Keeping Room. I thought I would share the progress and how we got started with the finish selections. A Kitchen renovation can be very intimidating project to tackle but it doesn’t have to be if you know exactly where to start and how to select the proper finishes. An Interior Designer that has been through the steps a thousand times can be your best investment when renovating a Kitchen.

Before:

During:

Since this picture was taken we have installed the countertops, backsplash tile, appliances, pluming and light fixtures. We are currently waiting for the furniture to arrive for the adjacent Keeping Room. It is scheduled to be delivered this month….yeah!! Once we install the furniture, hang the window treatments, place the artwork and accessories I’ll be ready to have the space professionally photographed. I’ll share the after shots with you just as soon as its complete! For a little sneak peek, here’s a concept board showing the design direction:

Typically my list for prioritizing finish selections for Kitchen remodels, renovations and new build outs fluctuates a bit project by project. And I guess it should considering no two projects are ever the same. We only concentrate on finishes once the layout is perfected keeping flow and function in the forefront of planning. And the lighting design is meticulously laid out to highlight all those great design details. This proper preplanning allows for functional perfection.

For this particular renovation, we started with the flooring, just keep in mind that this is not always the case. See my list below on how we tackled the tedious task of selecting finishes for this Kitchen renovation…how do you narrow it down when there are a million choices? Here’s how we handled it:

1. Flooring: I typically wouldn’t start here but in this case our decision was dictated by the flooring used in the adjacent rooms. Homeowners usually have a strong opinion in what type of floor they want…whether it be hardwood, natural stone, or something more environmentally friendly like cork or bamboo. This being a small Kitchen we didn’t want to chop up the space by selecting a different floor than the rest of the house. We chose to go with hardwood to create flow and continuity. Once we had an idea of the flooring “direction”, we moved on to the cabinets.

2. Cabinets: If homeowners have done some homework in pulling magazine cuttings and printing inspiration photos off of the internet they should have a good idea on the overall look they want for their cabinets. Interior Designers can help direct the decision by listening to how the homeowner want their Kitchen to “look” and “feel”….maybe open and airy, rich and traditional or clean and contemporary just to name a few. These homeowners knew they wanted crisp, clean and white (but what shade of white was the question?) In this case we went with the homes existing trim color which was very warm and creamy. They already loved this color so it was a no brainer!

3. Countertops: Once we determined the color and style of the cabinetry, we then moved on to the selection of the countertops. Before we even visited a showroom or stone yard we determined a concept. This is always helpful in order to stay focused and on task. Do they want a crisp clean look, a classic coordination, or are the countertops the showstopper in the space? In this case they wanted a monochromatic look that wasn’t too busy. I was there to make sure the undertones in the granite worked with our cabinet color.

4: Backsplash tile: There are literally thousands of choices in tile so saving this selection for this stage in the project made it much easier. If we had opted for a busy countertop then I would have suggested going with a simple backsplash tile coordinating the undertones in the tile with the countertops and cabinets. In this case we stayed with our monochromatic concept and went with a cream colored subway tile.

5. Hardware: I like to save this for last because so many things can dictate the overall style and finish of the cabinet hardware. The granite may have metallic specs in it or the backsplash tile might have bronze accents. You should let some of these selections help guide your decision with hardware. Lighting might also play a roll in your final choice. In this Kitchen, we went with stainless hardware that related to the stainless steel appliances.

BlogTour is a sponsored event where a select group of design and lifestyle bloggers is invited to join Modenus on a five day trip to an international design destination. Airfare, hotel, most meals and ground transport are paid for by Modenus and BlogTour’s sponsors and in turn we ask that you do what you do best – blog and tweet, post your finds on Facebook, Pinterest, Instgram or any other outlet of your choosing. The point is, we want you to make a lot of noise and give your audiences a front row seat to major design events, swank parties, podium discussions about design and blogging and the journey as a whole.

This is my year for big dreams….and this falls under the category of HUGE!! I mean would they really pick a new blogger with less than 1000 Twitter follows (364 to be exact)? It could happen:) Here’s my submission for the tour….it’s out of my hands now. If it’s meant to be it’s meant to be….and I would be so happy if it were!!

Here are the questions they’re asking…and they’ve said to brag, so here goes:

Well how about this – would you like to join Modenus and a select teams of bloggers as they scour the world for great design and report back live from the world’s greatest cities and the most recognized design trade shows? LIKE I SAID….A DREAM COME TRUE!”

“A Goal Without a Plan is Just a Dream.” Author Unknown

I have always loved the beginning of a New Year….new beginnings, reminiscing and hope! I must admit, I’ve never been a huge fan of resolutions but I do believe in setting goals for myself. Last year was the first time I had actually taken the time to write them down (and put them out there for the world to see) and I have to say, it was ok….I survived! It was nice to look back at that list throughout the year in an attempt to stay on track. My goals aren’t set in stone and my list should not make me feel bad because let’s face it, life shifts directions and goals change….but I find it necessary to give myself at least a starting point.

Hostess with the Mostess

I read an interesting post earlier this week written by Mari Smith that talked about her approach in using a one word guide for the entire year. If you’re interested, you can read her entire post here. I thought it sounded like a good way to summarize what’s important to you in the New Year. So this year I’ve decided to do the same thing by adding an overall “theme” for my business. I thought long and hard and have decided that CLARITY is my one word for 2012. It’s time for me to get really clear on where I see my life and business going….I mean if I don’t know, then how am I ever going to get there, right?

To help me get a head start on my 2012 theme, I found a great little exercise that helped me begin to see things just a little bit clearer. It’s called a 3 year vision plan and what’s great about it is you can make it be about anything that’s important to you….your health, your family, your business, ANYTHING! If you want to see what I’m talking about, you can check out exactly how to do it here. It just takes a little bit of thought and time but its fun to think forward to what your bright and exciting future can be!

In writing my plan, I came up with the following goals for the New Year….and no pressure of course, if I only achieve a couple of them I’ll still be way ahead of where I am right now. But for now, we’ll just have to wait and see how well I do! Here’s my short list of what I plan to work on and improve in the New Year:

GROWTH – Continue working on and growing my business. Make commitments and follow through to show my family that if you put your mind to something, you can accomplish it!

HOME – Spend some much needed time furnishing and decorating my own home. I spend so much time giving my clients a home they can proud of, I can never quite find the time to work on my own.

FAMILY – I plan to spend more quality time with my family unplugged from my electronics. Enjoying simple things with them like playing chess, going to the movies, and more family dinners together.

FRIENDSHIPS – I met so many amazing people in 2011, I will continue to build on those precious relationships and look forward to all the new people I will meet in the coming year.

HEALTH – Although I did spend a little bit of time in the gym in 2011, it wasn’t nearly enough. I’m hoping to make it a regular event every week. And eating more fresh whole foods will help me feel better and give me the energy I need.

TRAVEL – I finally figured out that I LOVE to travel in 2011 so I’m hoping that 2012 brings even more adventures. I’m planning on more travel for business and hopefully more vacations with my family!

LEARN – This will always be a never ending theme in my life…and I can only hope that it has been instilled in my kids. May they understand and appreciate the importance of always expanding your mind.

CELEBRATE – I hope to be able to really take the time to celebrate many things in the coming year from holidays and birthdays to small feats and big successes. I will try to be in the moment and appreciate!

DELEGATE – This will be a tough one for me but I’m going to give it a go. I will try to let go of doing everything myself and let go of perfection. Things don’t always have to be done my way….if I can do it, this will be a huge relief!

SELF – I need to spend more time taking care of myself…from getting manicures and massages to plenty of rest and relaxation. I know this will be extremely tough for me, as with most moms we tend to put ourselves last!

GRATITUDE – I am so thankful for all that has happened in my life and grateful for those special people around me. I want to spend more time showing thanks to all those that I appreciate so much!

COMMITMENT – I will try to be more focused and committed to everything I do. I want to let go of all of the distractions and things that don’t matter in my life to make room for those few things that are the most important!

And there you have it, my 12 goals for the next twelve months! I’m not putting any extra pressure on myself but if I can accomplish a couple of them I’ll be happy. We’ll have to check back in a year and see how well I’ve done (or not)! May 2012 be an amazing and prosperous year for us all! What are your goals?
