A Storybook Summer: Our First Viking River Cruise Adventure
A Travelogue by Jennifer Campbell

Have you ever wanted to pinch yourself to see if you were having a dream? That is exactly how I felt when I arrived in Budapest, Hungary. While I had been to Europe on three previous occasions, this trip was vastly different. After forty ocean cruises, my Dad and I were embarking on our first Viking River Cruise adventure. Although it wasn’t a dream, the storybook landscapes did resemble a fairy tale! From Hungary to Austria and Germany to the Netherlands, we listened to magnificent philharmonic orchestras, explored the inside of castles and windmills, and tasted delightful delicacies. If you want to feel like royalty, take the Grand European Tour with Viking River Cruises. They treat passengers like Kings and Queens!

DAY ONE - BUDAPEST, HUNGARY

The moment we arrived in Budapest, we were given red carpet treatment. Greeted by the Viking representative at the airport, we were escorted to the shuttle which transported us to our five-star hotel situated along the Danube River. The pre-cruise extension package we purchased with Viking not only provided a home base at the Intercontinental Hotel in Budapest, but also a daily

breakfast buffet at the hotel. This buffet had everything from an omelette station and an assortment of Hungarian specialties to fresh-baked pastries and an Asian section. Needless to say, breakfast was always a feast for the senses! The Intercontinental is within walking distance of many prominent sites, including the Chain Bridge, Buda Castle, and Shoes on the Danube. Albeit a solemn experience, a visit to the Shoes on the Danube is a chilling reminder of the inexplicable horrors of World War II. These sixty pairs of iron shoes are a memorial to honor the Jews who were killed by fascist Arrow Cross militiamen.

After paying our respects, we strolled along the Danube to visit the Parliament Building. Located in Lajos Kossuth Square, this iconic building is one of Europe’s oldest legislative buildings and proudly stands as Budapest’s tallest structure. The only question is whether or not this massive structure is more beautiful in the daylight or at night when it is lit up like a Christmas tree!

On our first evening in Budapest, we stumbled upon a free concert featuring the Young Artist Chamber Orchestra from Utah. What a treat to hear these young musicians play from their hearts at St. Michael’s Church. The acoustics were impeccable! Following the concert, we enjoyed a lovely dinner at Europa Café. Just thinking about the spicy goulash soup, fresh baked bread, perfectly seasoned chicken paprika with potatoes and sweet assortment of Hungarian cakes and ice cream makes my mouth water! It is so delicious that you will definitely make plans to return!

I knew from the moment I laid my head on the pillow on our first night in Budapest that this trip would be legendary. For in one single day, we had flown across the Atlantic Ocean and walked 6.5 miles through the stately streets of Budapest. Even as an avid traveler, I have yet to master the art of sleeping on the plane, so it was certainly time to turn in for the night following 37 hours of exploration!

DAY TWO - BUDAPEST, HUNGARY

Imagine waking up in Budapest and enjoying breakfast while looking up at the noble Buda Castle. Shortly after another delectable breakfast at the hotel, we were cruising down the tracks of the Budapest metro, the best way to get around the city. Our first stop was Buda Hill. After marveling at the Castle from the hotel, we wanted to explore this splendid hilltop, from the colorful mosaic adorning the roof of Mathias Church to the breathtaking view from Fisherman’s Bastion. It was the perfect vantage point from which to capture photographs of the Viking longships, our hotel, and the Parliament Building.

As we descended the hill, the funicular took us within a short distance of the famous Chain Bridge, so a leisurely walk across the Danube was a must! When considering what to have for dinner on our second evening in Hungary, there was little discussion, as the Europa Café was the only logical choice! The Hungarian cuisine was the perfect way to end an active day filled with amazing adventures!

DAY THREE - BUDAPEST, HUNGARY

Alas, it was time to check out of the Intercontinental Hotel. Of course, there were no tears shed, for checking out simply meant checking in to the pristine Viking Ingvi longship! Not wanting to waste any time in this capital city, we hopped on a tram and went to the Grand Market Hall, also known as Central Market Hall. Boasting produce, fresh meats, spices, souvenirs, and more, this marketplace is one of the oldest and largest indoor markets in Budapest.

Later that morning, we returned to the Ingvi to don our swimwear for our visit to Széchenyi Thermal Baths, the largest medicinal baths in Europe. What a refreshing way to cool off on a sweltering summer afternoon! With fifteen pools to choose from, both indoors and outdoors, it is the perfect place to relax and rejuvenate. We chose to spend our time one of the main outdoor pools and even took a few spins in the whirlpool, a merry-go-around type feature that will definitely put a smile on your face! One of the most touching moments occurred where the locals were watching the soccer championship on a large screen in one corner of complex. The national anthem was being sung before the game began. Chills went up and down my spine as I watched the locals stand up and cheer in honor of their country. I must admit, I cheered right along with them in support of this European country that now holds a special place in my heart.

Before the sun went down, we enjoyed our first Viking River Cruise dinner experience. It was simply incredible. I chose the Hungarian Farmer’s Plate for my first course, the Hungarian Goulash for my second course, and Hungarian layer cake for my dessert. The perfect meal to eat while in Hungary (or in any other part of the globe – it was amazing). Following our marvelous meal, the Captain took the entire longship for a sightseeing cruise to see the lights of the city. Budapest is so beautiful at night, with all of the buildings lit up! What an incredible sight to see!

DAY FOUR - BUDAPEST, HUNGARY

On Sunday, my Dad and I had the privilege of singing at the International Church of Budapest. What a joy to spend Father’s Day, an American holiday, alongside my Dad as we shared our stories and sang original songs for the congregation. We hope to return one day, for the people were so humble and kind. Visiting with them and hearing many of their stories was so heart-warming. It was undoubtedly one of the most special moments of our entire summer. Our last day in Budapest, we enjoyed a delightful lunch along the Danube at Jerney Italian Bistro, where we savored a traditional

pizza margherita. Although it was sad to board the ship and leave this enchanting city, we quickly became accustomed to life on the Ingvi. The ship became a family in virtually no time at all. The majority of crew members knew our names by the second day of the cruise.

The Viking Ingvi Crew provided excellent service. From Csaba, the Bar Chef, to Krisztina, the Hotel Manager, and of course, Rob, the Program Director, Tamara, the Concierge, Vivijen, the Receptionist, Daniel, the Musician, Judit, Bar Waitress, and Bojana, the Maître D', all of the crew on board worked hard to ensure that our river cruise was nothing short of exceptional. Many others contributed to an phenomenal cruise as well. Their meticulous service is very much appreciated. Many of the crew members became friends over the course of our two-week sailing.

The Captain held a welcome aboard party that evening as a prelude to dinner. My menu selections included the potato crusted mascarpone cheese with a truffle sabayon sauce for my first course, Chateaubriand with buttered vegetables, potatoes, and a béarnaise sauce for my entrée, and a strawberry sponge cake for dessert. It was the perfect way to end another perfect day.

DAY FIVE - VIENNA, AUSTRIA

As a little girl, I dreamed of going to Austria, home of The Sound of Music. Now, as a young woman, my wish was fulfilled. We spent three days in this beautiful country, beginning with a scenic sail through scenery that made me want to sing out, “The hills are alive…” Well, you get the picture. The first part of the day found us dining on delicious meals, watching an apple strudel demonstration, and viewing remarkable scenery.

Our Dinner Selections on Board the Viking Ingvi: Caesar salad, parma ham and assorted melons with a grapefruit vinaigrette, honey barbecued fillet of salmon, grilled leeks, and polenta spring rolls, and warm apple hazelnut crumble à la mode.

Following a wonderful meal and a delightful “day at river,” we sprung for the Mozart and Strauss Concert that evening. Sitting on the front row of Schubert Hall, I was captivated by the excellent musicianship and talent that exuded from the platform as the Vienna Residence Orchestra performed. To welcome us back on the ship, the chef prepared Goulash soup and fresh baked bread as a late night snack, which was the perfect way to conclude a delightful evening.

DAY SIX - VIENNA, AUSTRIA

Vienna, Austria is a city that needs no introduction. The moment we stepped off the ship, we ventured directly to the U-Bahn, navigating our way to the Schönbrunn Palace, a former imperial summer residence boasting 1,441 rooms. After touring 40 of these luxurious rooms, it was time to return to the city center where we explored many miles of historic sites.

Soon we found our way to the Zum Schwarzen Kameel (The Black Camel). The Viennese schnitzel and potato salad, as well as the spaghetti Bolognese topped with micro greens, were culinary perfection. Of course, the Viennese cuisine served here should be renowned! This iconic restaurant has roots dating back to a delicatessen frequented by Ludwig van Beethoven himself!

What better way to end the evening than with a concert featuring the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra? Sitting inside the Great Hall of the Wiener Konzerthaus, I felt as if I was royalty. How amazing it was to sit in box number one, row one, seats one and two! The best seats in the house complete with a view of the piano keys. The Vienna Symphonic Orchestra (Wiener Symphoniker) performed under the direction of conductor Robert Trevino. They played works by Peter Iljitsch Tschaikowsky, Franz Liszt, and Antonín Dvořák. From the first note until the last, it was an amazing evening of expert musical talent. Hearing this brilliant assembly of musicians perform was a dream come true!

Just as I was soaring on cloud nine, the evening went to even greater heights. Atop the Wiener Riesenrad, or Riesenrad, a 212-foot tall Ferris wheel in Vienna, the view was spectacular! Riding one of the world's oldest operating Ferris wheels was the ideal way to end an absolutely dazzling day.

DAY SEVEN - MELK, ABBEY

Founded in 1089, Melk Abbey towers over the medieval town of Melk, Austria. This Benedictine abbey sits high upon a hill, offering a mesmerizing view of the Danube River as well as the surrounding hills, villages, and vineyards. Coupled with a meandering walk down the hill, through the old town, across the bridge, and through the woods, it definitely feels like you have stepped right into the pages of a storied fable!

Our Dinner Selections on Board the Viking Ingvi: red pepper and spinach hummus with pita bread, Munster cheese plate with apple chili chutney, Zwiebelrostbraten & crisp onions with mashed potatoes, onion sauce, and pickled cucumbers, and milk chocolate mousse with strawberry salad.

DAY EIGHT - PASSAU, GERMANY

Break out your lederhosen and dirndls! The first stop in Bavaria is Passau, Germany, home of the world’s largest cathedral pipe organ, boasting more than 17,000 pipes! Thanks to Viking, we were able to attend a concert to hear this monstrous musical instrument being played. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable, sharing a detailed history of the “Three Rivers City,” named for the three rivers that converge in Passau: the Danube, Inn, and Ilz Rivers.

Since the recipe originated in Passau, you will definitely want to stop in a local bakery for some lebkuchen, a traditional German baked Christmas treat resembling gingerbread. Or you could try a slice of this delicious Forest Berry Cake from Hoft Bakery. The layers of pastry, spongy cake, and gelatin filled with fresh berries, along with the thinly sliced almonds, made this the perfect way to satisfy my sweet tooth!

stuffed meatballs and micro herbs with a porcini dust reduction, osso buco with shallot confit, porcini risotto, and a lemon herb gremolata prime rib eye steak with a herb chimichurri, steak fries, and a vegetable medley, and apple cake, a regional specialty.

DAY NINE - REGENSBURG, GERMANY

Home of the oldest bratwurst grill, Regensburg, Germany is a colorful town featuring a 12th century stone bridge that is 310 meters long with with 16 arches. The city center has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, considering the well-preserved medieval structures, such as the Gothic Regensburg Cathedral.

Following a very enjoyable tour with a local guide, we savored an appetizing lunch at a picnic table beside the Danube River, near the Old Stone Bridge, at the Wurstkuchl. Aptly named the Regensburg Sausage Kitchen, this restaurant has been in business over 500 years and serves 6,000 sausages per day. You’ll definitely want to order your own plate of signature sausages, layered on a bed of caramelized sauerkraut, for you truly cannot eat just one!

Our Dinner Selections on Board the Viking Ingvi: tomato & buffalo mozzarella with balsamic reduction (one of the best I have ever had), basil pesto, and tomato coulis, poached asparagus with prosciutto, ricotta panna cotta, quail egg, and balsamic reduction, braised beef brisket and barbecued meat empanada with sautéed mushrooms, spinach, and jus, prime rib eye steak with a herb chimichurri, vegetable medley and steak fries, and créme schnitte cake, a regional specialty.

DAY TEN - NUREMBERG, GERMANY

While Viking provides an excellent complimentary excursion in most ports, we chose to take the World War II tour in Nuremberg, Germany. As a Language Arts teacher, I am required to teach the Holocaust. Teaching this difficult subject becomes a little easier when I can share personal experiences with my students, such as touring Congress Hall and Courtroom 600, where the Nuremberg Trials were held. While this tour was quite the somber experience, our lovely tour guide has now become a dear friend.

Our Dinner Selections on Board the Viking Ingvi: Munster cheese plate with apple chili chutney, poached Norwegian salmon atop a bed of Caesar salad, barbecued chicken breast, mashed potatoes, and vegetable medley, and black forest cake à la mode.

DAY ELEVEN - BAMBERG, GERMANY

Where do you go from Nuremberg? To Venice, of course! Bamberg, Germany is home to Little Venice, a former fisherman’s district constructed of half-timbered houses. Of course, the landmark destination in this Bavarian town would be a tie between the Bishop’s Palace and ornate rose garden or the Town Hall building situated right in the middle of the river Regnitz. According to legend, the Bishop would not grant land to the citizens, so they built an artificial island on which to construct this colorful town hall. Be sure to ask your tour guide about the “legacy” the artist left behind on the painted mural!

Our Dinner Selections on Board the Viking Ingvi: chilled roast beef with mixed pickles, potato rösti, and rémoulade sauce, veal tenderloin with parmesan jus, mushrooms, green peas, and citrus potato gratin, bienenstitch cake, a regional specialty, and stracciatella ice cream.

DAY TWELVE - WÜRZBURG, GERMANY

The Viking walking tour of Würzburg, Germany featured a visit to the Würzburg Residence, a palace built in 1720. Since it was heavily damaged during World War II, restoration has been an on-going process since 1945. In 1981, it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of the most beautiful aspects of the palace is its enormous fresco in the formal reception room, which features scenes from four continents. The palace gardens are very ornate as well.

Later we stumbled upon the best soft pretzels we tasted on the entire trip at the Ditsch Pretzel Bakery. If you’re looking for authentic Franconian and Bavarian food, look no further than the Würzburger Ratskeller, a beautifully decorated restaurant serving delicious food that will tantalize your taste buds! The apple strudel was some of the best we have ever eaten! Having lunch in the courtyard was such a delightful experience!

Our Dinner Selections on Board the Viking Ingvi: truffle scented chicken cassoulet with a puff pastry crust, mushrooms, and tarragon, roasted tenderloin of beef with pommes duchesse and béarnaise sauce, surf and turf with salmon with hollandaise sauce and roasted tenderloin of beef with pommes duchesse and béarnaise sauce, brownie and white chocolate sauce, and warm white chocolate and cherry pudding with caramel ice cream.

DAY THIRTEEN - WERTHEIM, GERMANY

Known for the iconic Wertheim Castle and medieval town center, Wertheim, Germany was one of the most quaint, picturesque German towns we encountered. From the leaning tower of Wertheim to the Tudor style architecture, this town has a photo opportunity on nearly every corner! A walk or ride up to Wertheim Castle is a must. The view from the top of the hill is absolutely breath-taking.

If you’re feeling a little peckish after exploring the castle grounds, stop in at Fritz Frischmuth, a family-owned bakery that has been in operation for 13 generations. Fondly known as the glass blowing capital of the world, Wertheim is home to a multi-generational family of glass blowers, one of whom came on the ship to give a demonstration. It was always exciting to have local artisans and performers join us on the ship for quality entertainment.

Our Dinner Selections on Board the Viking Ingvi: Caesar salad, provolone cheese plate with a pineapple-vanilla chutney, pepper crusted chicken breast with glazed baby carrots and chickpeas, straw potatoes, and a chipotle jus, and tiramisu.

DAY FOURTEEN - KOBLENZ, GERMANY

On the way to Koblenz, Germany, we sailed past countless castles and tremendous townships. We even had the opportunity to have the perfect vantage point from which to view Loreley Rock. Known as the Gateway to the Rhine Gorge, Koblenz is a short motor coach ride to the Marksburg Castle, part of the included tour provided by Viking. I was awestruck by the spectacular hilltop vista, overlooking the town of Braubach. As we stepped across the threshold of this centuries old castle, it felt as if we had left reality and stepped into the pages of a make-believe fable.

While a trip to a medieval castle would typically be the high point of the day, the day once again soared to an even greater altitude. We experienced an exhilarating ride across the Rhine River via cable car to the top of the hill where the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress is located! Mere words cannot fully describe this experience.

Our Dinner Selections on Board the Viking Ingvi: crisp tandoori chicken & parmesan foam with tomato salad, pumpkin mousse ravioli with lamb loin and a sweet chili sauce, beef wellington napoleon style with sautéed vegetables and pommes duchesse, and crisp dark Valrhona chocolate tart with mango salad.

DAY FIFTEEN - COLOGNE, GERMANY

The fourth largest city in Germany, Cologne is home to the grand Cologne Cathedral, a massive structure which towers above the vast majority of buildings in this ancient city.

What a treat to be notified by the Viking Concierge that the Cologne Philharmonic Orchestra was holding a free concert that afternoon! It was one of the most enjoyable concerts we experienced on our Grand European Tour.

Wanting to maximize our time in the city center, we enjoyed a quick lunch at Merzenich, a delightful bakery near the Cologne Cathedral. We shared a sandwich called a Fitness Fladen, including turkey, lettuce, cucumbers, shredded carrots, boiled eggs, and a remoulade. Very unique and extremely tasty! Of course, I also did a little shopping along the way, as there are plenty of enticing shops on Schildergasse, the busiest pedestrian-only shopping street in Europe with 13,000 people passing by every hour!

Our Dinner Selections on Board the Viking Ingvi: The Viking Taste of Germany Dinner menu included roast leg of port, bratwurst, tiroler knödel, sauerkraut, knödel, Viennese schnitzel, roast chicken, grilled käsekrainer, potato salad, and much more!

DAY SIXTEEN - KINDERDIJK, NETHERLANDS

Named for a Dutch folkloric story of a cat saving a child’s life, Kinderdijk translates to “children’s dike.” Located 15 kilometers east of Rotterdam, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is famous for a unique collection of 19 authentic windmills from the 18th century. While on the Viking tour, you will not only have the opportunity to walk along the picturesque dike, but you will also be invited to explore the inside of one of these historic structures and even speak to a local miller. It is an unforgettable experience that was only overshadowed by the fact that this was the final day of our river cruise.

Our Dinner Selections on Board the Viking Ingvi: surf and turf, salmon with a Hollandaise sauce and caviar, along with a prime rib eye steak and vegetables, New York style cheesecake, and bittersweet chocolate pots de crème with whipped cream and a pineapple-mint salsa on the side.

OVERALL IMPRESSIONS

Throughout this Grand European Tour, there were moments when goose bumps covered my arms, tears filled my eyes, and my heart was overwhelmed with joy. While my diary entries were scattered, at best, I am certain I will never forget the places we explored, the remarkable experiences we shared, and the many strangers we now call friends. My first Viking River Cruise etched indelible memories in my mind and effectively tugged on my heartstrings as well. As we received our customs form on the flight home, the reality of returning to the “real world,” began to sink in. Yet I encouraged myself with this thought: all good things must come to an end, so new ones can begin. So now the only question that remains is: when will I set sail with Viking once again?

Opened in 1950, Junior's Restaurant serves the best baked cheesecake I have ever eaten. Known for their signature Lebanese cuisine, Karam Restaurant delivers big flavor on all sorts of Middle Eastern classics, from house-made Hoummus and Spinach Pies to Falafel Sandwiches and fresh baked pita bread. Katz's. The name speaks for itself. Ask anyone in New York City and they will likely have a story to tell of a trip to Katz's. Since Katz's opened in 1888, countless celebrities have dined there, along with many Presidents. The food is extraordinarily fresh, the meat is skillfully sliced by hand, and your taste buds will be dancing the minute the food enters your mouth.

If you love pizza, then you have to pay a visit to the home of America's first pizzeria. Their coal-fired oven produces a crispy crust on the bottom with perfectly melted cheese on top. Try their signature offerings like homemade meatballs on top of their original pizza. They've been at this for over 100 years. A century of pizza equals pizza perfection!

Known as the best steakhouse in New York City, Uncle Jack's Steakhouse needs no introduction. In all of my travels, this is undoubtedly one of my favorite restaurants. The steaks are cooked to perfection and the service is impeccable. Owner and proprieter William Degel should be known as the "King of Steak."

Situated in the heart of New York's Little Italy, this restaurant has scrumptious lasagna, chicken parmigiana, and many other Italian favorites and a few unique offerings as well. Be sure to top your meal off with a delectable dessert, such as their freshly made cannolis! One meal here will have you singing, "That's Amore!"

Rome: The Eternal City

From the gargantuan Colosseum and St. Peter’s Basilica, to the monumental Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps, the Eternal City of Rome, Italy offers an incredible adventure for men and women of all ages. Art aficionados, history buffs, and foodies alike will be overwhelmed with the options available to satisfy their cravings to be immersed in the Italian lifestyle and culture. I can tell you from experience that a visit to Rome is unlike any other and will definitely exceed your expectations! Whether you want a low-key vacation, blending in with the locals, or if you want a fast-paced adventure seeing all the city has to offer, you will definitely be able to give your friends a full report of the picturesque architecture, succulent cuisine, and historic appeal. Just think of it as your own little moment of fame, telling them what you did “When in Rome!”

The moment you set foot on Roman soil, you will know that you are walking through a city with a rich history. Not only that, but some of the people who graced this city with their presence are, shall we say, not your average Joes. Take, for example, Michelangelo. Yes, THE Michelangelo. He painted the current version of St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel that you can still tour today. Although he did not use a paintbrush, Julius Caesar also made his mark on Roman territory. More recently, Rome has birthed celebrities like Food Network’s Giada De Laurentis, known for her sumptuous Italian cuisine and endearing personality. Needless to say, Rome has definitely given us countless household names, influencing what we see, what we believe, and even what we eat.

If you only have a short period of time in which to see the city, be sure to invest in the double decker bus tour. By doing so, you will be able to snag a lot of incredible photographs and get off at key locations to get a more up close and personal view. It goes without saying that a visit to the Colosseum is a must. It’s not enough to just take a photo from the outside. Explore the many levels of this architectural wonder, marveling at the amazing workmanship that went into this colossal construction project, in spite of the primitive tools that were available in 70 A.D. This structure could hold between 50,000 to 80,000 spectators. Find a spot inside the Colosseum, sit down, and imagine what it was like to sit there many years ago, watching the gladiators or a mock sea trial. I guarantee that it will be a moment you will always remember!

Some might say that Rome has it all. Whether or not it has it all, there is certainly a vast array of possibilities when it comes to choosing how to spend your day. For instance, why not walk down the street and visit another country? Vatican City, the smallest independent state in the world, is right in the middle of it all. There is no border, so tourists can walk right through the gates. Allow extra time to tour St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and Vatican Museums, as there are typically long lines, especially during peak travel months. Even so, it is definitely worth the wait! The Vatican is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it is home to some of the most famous art in the world. Send a postcard to someone back home and tell them you spent the day in a country within a country!

When it comes to accommodations in Rome, there is literally something for every budget. From budget-minded hostels to luxurious 5-star hotels, you will be sure to find what you are looking for. During my last stay in Rome, my dad and I booked a room at the NH Leonardo da Vinci hotel. Having stayed at another NH hotel in Amsterdam on a previous vacation, they gave us an outstanding rate. It was more modern than some hotels you find in Europe, having all of the amenities of the average 3 or 4-star hotel in the United States. While it was a more upscale hotel, they also provided a complimentary breakfast buffet, which was a nice way to start the day. Still, our favorite place to stay in Rome is the Hotel Sonya. Recommended by the experienced traveler, Rick Steves, this hotel is quaint, off the beaten path, and will give you a true Roman experience. They include a free breakfast as well, with a vast array of Italian delights, including delicate pastries, quiche, fruits, vegetables, and so much more. This is more than your ordinary continental breakfast. It is a culinary adventure for your taste buds!

If you are looking to immerse yourself in the culture even further, walk a few blocks away from the Hotel Sonya and enjoy a vibrant street market, complete with clothing, fresh produce, and many other items. If all of this shopping has made you hungry, head to the Café Washington for a succulent Italian meal. Having eaten there several times, I can tell you firsthand that their lasagna, tortellini, spaghetti and meatballs, and pizzas are very good. Be sure to step around the corner and cap off your meal with a scoop of gelato or ice cream, as this restaurant also serves up a wide array of frozen treats! Looking for something different to satisfy your appetite? Head over to Amalfi Pizzeria for their signature pizza/calzone combo, where one half of the pizza is a traditional pizza and the other half is a calzone. So delicious! Needless to say, Rome has a huge culinary scene that will keep you hungry, wanting to try as many different foods as possible.

If you find yourself in Rome, wishing you could come again one day, be sure to make a wish at the Trevi Fountain. The largest Baroque fountain in the world, the fountain as we know it today was officially completed in 1762. It stands at 85.28 feet high and uses 2,824,800 cubic feet of water every day. It is one of the most popular fountains in the world and is a must-see for anyone traveling to Rome. There is also a legend that if visitors toss a coin into the fountain, they are ensured to return to Rome one day. While this is simply a legend, I can tell you from experience that one trip to Rome could never be enough! Like they say, even Rome wasn’t built in a day! So grab your passport and pack your bags! It’s time to go on the ultimate Roman adventure!

Seattle: From Pike Place to Paradise

Rise to the top of the Space Needle. Catch a flying fish. Be a mountain climber. These are just a small number of the amazing experiences you can have on a trip to Seattle, Washington. Whether you are at the site of the World’s Fair in downtown Seattle or watching the fish fly at Pike Place Market, Seattle has something for everyone. Looking to get away from the city for a day? From excursions on the historic Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad to visits to multiple National Parks, you’ll find that the geographic landscape surrounding Seattle is just as unique as the people who live here. For those who embrace the culinary scene, you’ll find everything from fine seafood dining on the wharf at Ivar’s to the best Mac ‘n Cheese at Beecher’s Handmade Cheese shop near Pike Place Market. Seattle, Washington is not your run-of-the-mill city. It’s an eclectic mix of old and new, always offering something for everyone. So grab your bags and hop on a flight to SEA-TAC. There’s a world of adventure awaiting you!

The first time I set foot on Washington state soil, I was awestruck by the beauty of the surroundings, and especially the refreshing scent of evergreen trees. No, it wasn’t Christmas time. These trees grow wild here, sending off a pleasant scent that virtually masks every other smell. Needless to say, it is a welcome break from the ever-present smell of exhaust fumes, garbage, and the like. We rented a car at the airport, drove to our hotel, the Best Western in Federal Way, a suburb of Seattle. This was the perfect place to stay, as it is less expensive than downtown hotels, yet a great location for driving into the city or taking side trips away from the city. Plus, this hotel provided a nice complimentary hot breakfast prepared by the staff from their on-site restaurant. It really depends on your budget and what you plan to do during your stay in the Seattle area.

A visit to Seattle would not be complete without a visit to Pike Place Market. Home of the world-famous flying fish, this market boasts multiple levels of vendors, selling everything from fresh fish and produce to crafts, jewelry, and antiques. One of my favorite things to purchase is the bouquets of fresh flowers sold here in the summer months. Very inexpensive, yet beautifully arranged bouquets, filled with traditional flowers such as carnations, daises, and roses, as well as more exotic ones. The only problem is deciding which one to choose, as there are literally hundreds to choose from! The smoked salmon is tasty enough to snack on by itself standing right in the middle of the aisle. Take a jaunt across the street to pick up some fresh baked cookies at Three Girls Bakery. Or visit Beecher’s Handmade Cheese for their famous Macaroni and Cheese. For coffee lovers, it is a short jaunt to the first-ever Starbucks Coffee Shop. One word of advice, don’t eat before you come to Pike Place. Once you finish grazing through the many delectable offerings, you’ll have had your fill!

While in the downtown area, you’ll definitely want to visit the site of the 1962 World’s Fair, complete with a few midway rides, a children’s science museum, and the iconic Space Needle. While there is an admission fee and a long line to match, the Space Needle is a must-do on your first visit. Let’s face it. When you go home, the first question you will hear is, did you see the Space Needle? It is the icon of Seattle, memorialized in photographs of the city skyline, standing 605 feet tall as the tallest observation tower in Washington State. After all of that standing and waiting, rest your feet and take a ride on the monorail, another historic piece that remains from the World’s Fair.

Getting hungry? Head to The Old Spaghetti Factory for a delicious meal that is sure to alleviate your hunger pains. Their Italian cuisine is just like “Mama used to make.” The well-seasoned dishes and al dente pasta will make you think you have been transported to an Italian grandmother’s home, enjoying a comforting meal that could only be had in the heart of Italy. You’ll delight as each meal ends with a sweet note, a scoop of their homemade spumoni, a special Italian ice cream that is sure to make your sweet tooth happy.

Looking to escape the concrete jungle for a day and enjoy the beauty and sounds of nature? Head to Mount Rainier National Park. Established in 1899, this National Park encompasses more than 235,000 acres of natural beauty. Situated in the midst of the Cascade Range, the tallest peak is the gargantuan volcanic mountain known as Mount Rainier, rising 14,410 feet above sea level. Drive up to Sunrise for a breathtaking view, the highest point accessible by car. Be sure to have your camera in hand for the many mountain vistas and glaciers you will see along the way. Go cross-country skiing in the colder months or take a walk on one of the many trails, enjoying the wildflowers in the spring. Whatever you do, you’ll be surrounded by the serene beauty of the wilderness, a welcome retreat from city life.

Finally, head over to Paradise. This location not only bears the name Paradise, but it truly feels like a mountain paradise. Enjoy a visit to the visitor center with informative displays and a movie about the history of the Park. Then, venture over to Paradise Inn, a historic landmark built in 1916. Enjoy a delicious meal at their dining hall. All of their menu items are delicious, but my personal favorite is their venison stew paired with garlic mashed potatoes. The venison is cooked to perfection, smothered in caramelized gravy that is bursting with flavor. In the evenings, a gentleman plays familiar tunes on the antique piano in the lobby. Before you leave, grab a brochure listing their room rates. You’ll need that to book a stay here for your return trip! It is an experience that you will always remember!

If you’re still looking for adventures in nature, plan an excursion on the Mount Rainier Scenic Railroad, perfect for rail enthusiasts and those seeking adventure. Marvel at their vast array of steam and diesel-electric locomotives and enjoy the ride through the beautiful countryside. Or you can take a day and go volcano watching in Mount Helens National Park, a National Monument. Of course, you may have the desire to get away from it all for more than a day. Embark a cruise ship bound for the inside passage of Alaska, where you can fly over a glacier in a floatplane, partake in a bountiful buffet of freshly caught salmon, or travel into the Yukon territory aboard the White Pass & Yukon Railroad. If that’s not enough to spark your interest, why not go whale watching, explore a genuine gold mine, or venture into Anchorage for a visit to the Anchorage Museum.

Whatever you choose to do during your stay in this Pacific Northwest paradise, it is certain that you will quickly make plans to return. From the rugged outdoors to the intriguing cityscape, Seattle is the perfect vacation destination for those who want it all. And don’t worry, after all of the adventures you’ll have in this amazing locale, you will not find yourself sleepless in Seattle!

Key West: The Keys Are Calling!

Stroll along the same streets where Thomas Edison, Harry Truman, Tennessee Williams, and Jimmy Buffet once walked. Take a ride on the famous Conch Train. Taste the creamiest, tangiest, and sweetest key lime pie you’ll ever put in your mouth. From the southernmost point in the continental United States to the six- and seven-toed polydactyl cats at the Hemingway House, Key West is overflowing with sun-drenched adventures for young and old alike. One visit to this laidback island getaway will make you second-guess your landlubber life and consider a residence on the sparkling waters surrounding this island paradise!

The minute you set foot in this tropical oasis, hop aboard the Conch Train. This “train” is iconic to the Keys and is the perfect way to gain an overview of the island, all while allowing you to enjoy the gentle breezes and radiant sunshine that grace the Keys almost daily. You’ll be able to hop on and hop off at prominent sights, including the southernmost point. This stop is a must for first time visitors to capture that perfect “prove you were here” photograph to send to your friends and family back home. With the ocean landscape directly behind you, it is a picture that is definitely worth more than a thousand words.

If classic literature is your cup of tea, be sure to tour Ernest Hemingway’s house. Marvel at the beautiful gardens. Stroke the back of one of the ancestors to Hemingway’s infamous polydactyl felines. Visit the house where many of his beloved literary works were written. Looking for more historic sights? Key West has several top-notch museums documenting everything from treasure hunters to the artwork of James Audubon. The Mel Fisher Maritime Museum, the only fully accredited museum in the Keys, is a must-see, filled to the brim with gold bars and countless artifacts from their 1622 Fleet exhibit of Spanish galleons. Pick up a few replica coins as a souvenir; perfect for tricking your coworkers into thinking you discovered sunken treasure!

While a visit to the Key West Key Lime Pie Co. is the ultimate choice for dessert, there are other culinary delights on this island as well. Swing by Sloppy Joe’s Bar & Grill for one of the best Sloppy Joes you will ever sink your teeth into. Imagine a soft sesame seed bun topped with an overflowing amount of spicy Sloppy Joe filling that has a kick to it, paired with well-seasoned fries and a slice of pickle. It’s enough to make your mouth water just thinking about it! Of course, Key West is the perfect place to get your conch fritter fix, one of their most popular culinary offerings. Let’s face it, with all of the fresh seafood found in the waters of the Keys, there will nary be a seafood dish that is not succulently prepared on this island oasis.

Once you’ve satisfied your taste buds, you’ll likely want to take a stroll on the beach or just lie in a hammock, enjoying the cool breeze coming off of the water. Once you’re ready for some more island action, strap on some diving gear and head to the open waters for some diving, deep sea fishing, or snorkeling. Rent a yacht, ride a banana boat, paddle a kayak, or just sunbathe on the deck of a catamaran. No matter what you choose to do, it is certain that the crystal clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico will take your breath away!

Are you ready to shop ‘till you drop? Key West has a myriad of boutiques and shops for every budget. From island fashion and fine jewelry to traditional souvenir t-shirts and postcards, Key West has it all. Look for unique items made with conch shells and sponges and of course, key lime taffy and key lime soda! You may even want to pick up a Conch Republic souvenir, commemorating the time when Key West briefly declared its independence from the U.S. in 1982. Even if you don’t want to purchase anything, perusing through the interesting shops is definitely worth the time. You’ll be bewildered and entertained by the wide array of items on display, so why not take a look? You’ll be glad you did!

As the sun goes down, head down to the Sunset Party, held every night in this island getaway. It is the perfect way to reflect on your stay in Key West. Filled with street performers, food vendors, and other unexpected surprises, this nightcap will solidify the fact that you need to return. Whatever you choose to do in Key West, it is certain that your stay will leave you wanting to stay forever or at least wanting to come back for more. From the bottom of the sea to the sunshine in the sky, Key West provides a picturesque setting that seems like it was built by Hollywood. But every palm tree and every grain of sand is real, which makes Key West the ultimate island paradise. Close to home for Americans, yet a location that seems so far, far away. Uncle Jack's Steakhouse: The King of Steaks

I have traveled to more than 40 countries and dined at a vast array of restaurants around the world. In all of my travels, I enjoyed one of the best restaurant meals I have ever eaten at Uncle Jack’s Steakhouse in New York City. From superb service to the most tender, succulently prepared steaks, this restaurant goes above and beyond the typical steakhouse experience. In fact, this restaurant sets itself apart from all other restaurants. Considered by many as the best steakhouse in New York City, Uncle Jack’s Steakhouse operates under the philosophy that the customer is king. And I believe that Uncle Jack’s Steakhouse should be crowned the “King of Steaks.”

Recently, I had the opportunity to interview the owner and founder of Uncle Jack’s Steakhouse, William Jack Degel. During our conversation, it was evident that Mr. Degel is extraordinarily passionate about his restaurants. When I sat down to enjoy a 10 ounce filet mignon, with the classic pairing of garlic mashed potatoes and creamed spinach, I could taste his passion on the plate. Every single aspect of the restaurant, from the freshest ingredients to the ornate décor, is a direct product of this passion. That’s why Mr. Degel is an expert in his field. He knows that success can be found by putting your heart and soul into everything you do, whether you are cooking a steak or performing a stakeout!

Whether he is tweaking a recipe for a dry aged steak at Uncle Jack’s Steakhouse or assembling a Kobe Beef burger at Jack’s Shack, Mr. Degel knows good food. So I had to ask, are there any foods that he does not like to eat?

“I’m a foodie,” said Mr. Degel. “I love food. Certain foods just don’t work with me. I have a tough time with a lot of red sauces and I have a tough time with cream and dairy. But I like all foods. I like to try things. I’m not into frog legs, and exotic, crazy stuff like that, but I like all simple, comfort foods, Japanese food, and homemade foods from different cultures anywhere. The best thing I have ever eaten is hands down my mother’s German Style Pot Roast. She used to roast it long and slow.”

It seems like people are continuously searching for the perfect steak. Juicy, tender, full of flavor... So what does this steak expert consider to be the very best cut of steak?

“My personal favorite cut is a bone in, dry aged New York Strip, 2 inch to 3 inch thick cut,” Mr. Degel explained. “I love the flavor of the bone and you can dry age it because it has the bone and fat count. I love the texture of it. It has more texture. You have to chew it a little bit and while you’re chewing it, each bite is unique and different. It’s just a different piece of meat. It’s not the most tender piece, but I feel it has the most flavor, yet it’s tender as well.”

Even if you haven’t had the pleasure of dining in one of Mr. Degel’s restaurants, you have probably seen him help struggling restaurants on the hit Food Network television show, Restaurant Stakeout. But is it truly as easy as it looks? Mr. Degel said that it’s virtually impossible to turn around a failing restaurant in such a short span of time.

“A lot of them, the minute I’m gone, they go back to their ways. It’s like a diet,” said Mr. Degel. “They’re cheating, they’re cutting corners, they’re distracted, they’re not involved, they’re lazy, and they’re not committed. After a week or two, they’re going back to their old ways.”

Of course, for many restaurant owners, Mr. Degel holds the key to their success, imparting wisdom and advice that makes a lasting difference in their businesses and even in their lives. Having completed over 55 episodes, I asked Mr. Degel to tell me if he had a special memory relating to the show and the people he has helped along the way.

“Every one of them is special,” said Mr. Degel. “Some of the restaurants I did, you can tell during a show I didn’t get along with the owners. I wasn’t on the same page, I didn’t like their philosophy, I didn’t like how they treated their workers, I didn’t like their excuses, but I gave them everything I had. And then there are those few owners that embraced me so much that they connected to me and are doing everything they can to revive their business. They look at everything I said, they took it, and they challenged themselves. I can’t point out one because I wouldn’t want to do that because everybody’s different and unique in their own sense. Each season, I have 13 episodes, so there’s about 3-4 every season that are my favorites.”

Many people first learn about Uncle Jack’s Steakhouse as a result of viewing Restaurant Stakeout. I asked Mr. Degel to tell me how the show has impacted the number of customers he sees at his restaurants.

“We’ve definitely seen some increase,” replied Mr. Degel. “We have people come in and they’re positive and they love it. Then we have people just trying to come in and see if Willie is really that good, if he lives up to his name. No matter what, we’re there, doing everything we can. The employees have a lot of pressure, and they do a great job. If we’re not right, and somebody doesn’t have the great experience they expect, we make it right.”

“The way we cook fresh every day,” Mr. Degel said as he described his commitment to quality. “We run a lunch show and a dinner show. We make everything from scratch. I’m picky, I’m a Virgo, I’m a control person; we go over everything. Our recipes, our guidelines, how we dry age the beef, how we treat the staff, how we hand pick the marble. Everyone’s so committed, they’re giving you proper service, and they’re giving you their heart and soul. I don’t hire people based on what is on their resume. I hire them based on their God-given talent. I look for a cast of characters. Building that team and keeping people motivated and holding them accountable. Making sure they love what they do, day in and day out, so we can perform the show and make sure the customer has the best experience of their life. I love a cast of characters, so interacting with my customers and my team is what I love about being in my restaurants.”

In speaking with Mr. Degel, it is evident that he enjoys his job. He is not afraid of hard work and he knows that everything he does is worth the effort.

“I love people,” Mr. Degel said. “So many people go into business, thinking it’s glorious, it’s easy, and just open up to provide jobs. It’s not that easy. I can say it’s one of the toughest businesses. You have to have a lot of people work for you to make minimal money. Today it’s under more pressure than ever. You’re being attacked by big corporations. If you’re not ready for this business and you’re not committed, then you don’t understand that you’re going to have to dig in and live there. It’s not just a job; it’s a lifestyle. Don’t waste your money and time and stay working for somebody else.”

The motto of Uncle Jack’s Steakhouse is “The Customer Is King.” So what does this signify? Mr. Degel said it was to let the customer know what their commitment was and that the staff must meet his high expectations to give the customer the best experience possible. “We’ll strive for perfection, we’ll learn, we’ll get better every day, and we’ll never stop,” Mr. Degel elaborated. “The customers will sense that, they’ll appreciate that because we’re all human. We can have all the technology in the world around us, but interacting with humans and feeding and cooking for them in the restaurant is no different than them eating at your table at home.”

One of the questions I asked Mr. Degel was to describe the most unique place he has ever enjoyed a meal. He described a delightful trip he took with his wife to Central America: “I went on vacation with my wife to Belize and we went on a fishing excursion. I went down snorkeling and had little spear guns. I speared a couple of fish and we got some conchs and then we pulled up on the beach and we set up a little fire in the sand. We had conch with just a little bit of vinegar and seasonings and then we grilled the fish on the beach. Belize was really cool. It was a real romantic trip for me and my wife.”

As a family man, Mr. Degel also enjoys taking vacations with his entire family. They have traveled to the Four Seasons in Mexico, Aruba, Jamaica, and other exotic locations. He added, “We go to Vermont skiing and just enjoy being with other families, other kids, everybody cooking in the kitchen, a collaborated effort.”

Even with his busy schedule, Mr. Degel realizes the importance of family. “My family is my foundation,” he stated. “They know what I do. I’m an entrepreneur, I’m a businessman, and I’m a visionary. I’m very driven, so they understand that and they’re committed to it and they make it pretty much easy for me but I divide my time very well. I’m sure my wife wants more of me all of the time, but she understands the commitment and the responsibility that I have. Even though I’m constantly thinking of the next big thing, you have to learn to turn it off and just slow down. I’m only human, even Willie has his kryptonite.”

Mr. Degel’s drive and determination are what make him a successful entrepreneur, restaurateur, husband, and father. But he is certainly up to the task. In fact, he is even looking to take the Uncle Jack’s concept beyond the Big Apple.

“We’re looking to open more Uncle Jack’s Steakhouses in every big city in the United States,” said Mr. Degel, “but I want to collaborate an effort with other restaurants that might be in these cities. We do joint ventures like a franchise and they’ll open with me and we’ll collaborate together.”

With all of his accomplishments, Mr. Degel continues to strive to better himself and his business. He said, “I come from a lower mid-class family in Queens and I never had anything handed to me. I had to believe in myself. It doesn’t matter if everyone else believes in you; you need to believe in yourself. I’ve established myself and built my empire up, but the pressure is on. What am I going to do next? It’s all about working smarter, not harder.”

Mr. Degel also feels that everyone should be working and making whatever contribution they can to society. “I'm a Republican. I’m really not happy the way the country’s being run today,” said Mr. Degel. “I’m not happy with our leadership, and I’m not happy with the frame of mind of people. I believe everybody should be working. I don’t believe everybody should just get everything for free and get it handed to them. I believe our government is controlled by just giving things out. I believe everybody in some aspect can have some type of responsibility. If they can’t walk, they can think. There are so many challenging people that aspire to great things and I see so many people whining and crying and milking our system. It makes me sick and I just feel that everybody, no matter what happens in their life, has to take this switch of negativity and look within themselves and say, what can I do today? What can I do to feel better about myself by accomplishing something that I’m good at?”

Mr. Degel is a great role model for other restaurateurs to follow. He knows what he has been blessed with and he is more than willing to share his knowledge with others. And it is evident that he loves what he does every day. Toward the end of the interview, Mr. Degel said, “I help everybody I know, every way I can, in any business, and even in their way of life. I feel the philosophy I have can affect anybody’s business and personal life. I’m no different. I’m not better than anybody. God gave me talent. I’ve been able to cultivate it to see what I’m good at, challenge myself, and I love being positive, believing in people, and showing what it takes, the commitment, the dedication, the passion, making sure anything you start you finish, and having fortitude. Never quit, never stop, and love what you do every day.”

An Alpine Paradise: Zermatt

Picture yourself sitting on the balcony of a chalet hotel in the middle of the Swiss Alps, overlooking the majestic Matterhorn. No, it’s not a scene from a make-believe movie filmed in Hollywood or a delightful vision you once had in a dream. This will be your reality when you visit the charming village of Zermatt, Switzerland. From the towering Alps to the sweeping valleys and the glacial streams to the Swiss architecture, Zermatt is a one-of-a-kind alpine paradise.

Located in the district of Visp in the canton of Valais in Switzerland, Zermatt has a population of approximately 5,800 people. Its smaller size in comparison to larger European destinations makes it the perfect place to get away from it all. Take a train from a larger city through the breathtaking mountain vistas as you make your way to this awe-inspiring locale. You’ll want to have your camera on hand to capture the stunning scenery along the way, from the rolling green valleys dotted with ornate chalets and lush gardens to the massive glaciers capping many of the towering peaks along the way. I can assure you that a scenic ride on the rails alone is enough to make you want to return! As you walk down the Bahnhofstrasse, the main thoroughfare in Zermatt, toward your hotel, you will be awestruck by the beauty that surrounds you. Pinch yourself and you’ll find that this idyllic setting is not a dream, but your absolute reality for the length of your stay.

Be sure to plan your trip ahead of time, so you can reserve a room at one of the beautiful hotels in Zermatt. While the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof offers some of the most luxurious accommodations, I prefer the smaller Swiss-style chalet hotels like Hotel Antika. It’s more affordable and offers a more intimate stay than a large hotel. This particular hotel also serves up a delicious breakfast each morning featuring thinly sliced meats and cheeses, fruits, homemade bread, jams, yogurt, and some of the fluffiest, most buttery croissants I’ve ever tasted in my entire life. Request a balcony room facing the Matterhorn. The only problem? Prying yourself away from the captivating view! Of course, you may choose to walk down the Coop, which is one of the two local markets in Zermatt, and purchase some fresh baked bread, sliced lunchmeat, Swiss cheese (of course!), and an apple strudel for dessert to satisfy your sweet tooth. Then, bring your purchases back to the hotel and enjoy a delightful picnic on your own private balcony with the Matterhorn as the backdrop.

If you’re looking for something more adventurous, take the highest open-air cogwheel railway in Europe up to Gornergrat, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Switzerland at a height of 3,089 meters. Or you can take a cable car directly from Zermatt to one of many locations including the highest altitude mountain railway station in all of Europe, the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. This is the place to have a bite to eat, relax, or embark an even grander adventure. Besides being a scenic wonderland at a height of 3,883 meters with views of the Italian, French, and Swiss Alps, this is also the starting point for a climb to the top of Breithorn, a 4,000 meter mountain that will delight any mountain climber brave enough to take on the two and a half hour hike.

Feeling a need for speed? Don your skis and get ready to hit the slopes! Zermatt is home to Klein Matterhorn, the highest ski lift in Europe. This small Alpine village also proudly offers the largest summer skiing area in the Alps with 9 ski lifts and 25 kilometer runs open all year. Want to travel over the snow in a cooler part of the year? They also have the longest winter skiing season in Europe, running late November to early May. Zermatt is known as one of the best ski resorts in the world. And rightly so, since it is used as a training facility for Olympic athletes and champions from around the world! From the green Bunny Hill to the black advanced slope, you’ll find a run made just for you, giving you a million reasons to smile as you cruise through the powder underneath the shadow of the Matterhorn!

If all of this activity has given you an appetite, head back down to the village of Zermatt for dinner at one of the charming restaurants serving up delicious Swiss cuisine. We chose Whymperstube, a restaurant known for their cheese fondue, beef bourguignon, and other culinary delights. While you may have experienced fondue at a restaurant near you, Swiss fondue is unlike any other. The cheese used in this savory dish is especially Swiss, rich and creamy and sure to please cheese lovers from every part of the globe. They also offer lighter fare such as a salad featuring buffalo mozzarella and tomatoes drizzled with olive oil. The ambience is pure Swiss with the small ornate windows and classic Swiss style wood furniture. Whichever you choose, a visit to a restaurant in Zermatt will enable you to mingle with the locals, enjoy the Swiss delicacies, and leisurely reflect on the day’s events or look ahead to new memories to be made during your stay in Switzerland.

When you plan your itinerary, be sure to leave a little wiggle room. You never know when you might walk down a side road and hear a group of musicians gathered together to share their love of folk music. Take a stroll outside of town and leave the village behind. Explore the nature trails, visit the Glacier Palace, or take flight on a helicopter sightseeing tour. Visit the Matterhorn Museum to learn more about the history of this majestic mountain landscape, including the first group of individuals to ever attempt to summit the Matterhorn itself.

No matter what you do, if your stay in Zermatt falls between the start of July and mid-August, you must make plans to be on the Bahnhofstrasse, at 9:00 a.m. in the morning and/or 5:00 p.m. each evening. And don’t forget to have your camera in hand! The head goat herder and young people from around the area will don traditional Swiss costumes and parade through town with a herd of Blackneck goats. These goats are considered by many to be the most beautiful Swiss breed of goat. While it is for the enjoyment of locals and tourists alike, this tradition has its roots in the history of the village. As late as the 1960’s, Blackneck goats have been driven to the meadows in Zermatt and back to their stalls for milking in the evenings. In the 1990’s, the tradition of the Blackneck goats parading through town was reintroduced as a way to entertain visitors and promote the breed through this one-of-a-kind street performance. It is an experience you will always remember, so get ready to hear the bells on the goat’s collars ring! Take a lot of photographs and don’t be afraid to reach out and touch one of these friendly residents of Zermatt!

Whether you keep it cool as you glide across the pristine alpine snow on a pair of skis or heat things up as you mingle over a pot of fondue, you’ll quickly realize that a trip to Zermatt is much more than a vacation; it is an experience. And if you’re like me, you’ll sit on your balcony, gazing at the moonlight over the Matterhorn on your last evening there, with only one question in your mind. The question? When can I return? Zermatt may look like it was ripped from the pages of a storybook, but I can tell you firsthand that it is not a fairytale. Zermatt, Switzerland is the ultimate alpine paradise!

Paris: The City of Light

As a little girl, I remember seeing the Eiffel Tower featured in magazines and books and on television. Its sheer size seemed to tower over the city of Paris similar to the way the Jolly Green Giant would dwarf the citizens of Munchkin Land. The sparkling lights atop the tower created a magical spectacle that left me speechless when I fulfilled a childhood dream and set foot on Parisian soil for the first time. From the glistening top of the Eiffel Tower to the sandy bottom of the River Seine, Paris is a city of wonder with its stately architecture, classic cuisine, and stunning sights to behold.

The moment you step onto the sidewalks of Paris, you will be captivated by the beauty that surrounds you. But maintain your focus and make your way to Rue Cler, a street for locals and tourists alike. The boutique hotels on this street offer an affordable accommodation in a setting that is perfectly Parisian. My choice would be the Hotel Grand Leveque, a hotel recommended by the prolific European traveler Rick Steves. I recommend paying a little extra to reserve a room street side on an upper floor, where you can lie in bed at night and watch the Tower twinkle atop the buildings down below. I can personally tell you your final night in Paris will be a breathtaking one as you reflect on your journey through France while watching this magical sight unfold.

Rue Cler is a street built for foodies with its fromageries, bakeries, cafes, and markets. Be sure to spend a day perusing the street, stopping in for a freshly baked baguette from the bakery, a slice of your favorite cheese from the fromagerie, some thinly sliced meat from the delicatessen, fresh fruit from the local market, and for dessert, a flaky, buttery croissant with a creamy chocolate filling. Once you have shopped like a Parisian, carry your items to the perfect spot for a picnic: the Eiffel Tower. For you see, while Rue Cler does not feel a bit touristy with all of the locals shopping and eating there, it is within walking distance of the Eiffel Tower, Napoleon’s Tomb, and many other Paris landmarks. The American Church of Paris is also just around the corner. This cathedral provides an interdenominational service that will uplift and inspire you, complete with the beloved melody of a choir and pipe organ. You will also find the École Militaire metro station a few blocks away, which makes it easy to travel to far-reaching destinations within Paris and nearby villages. So make the most of your vacation as you become acquainted with the locals and do a little sightseeing as well!

If you want to see Paris from a bird’s eye view, climb to the top of the Arc de Triomphe at the western end of the famed Champs-Élysées. This noteworthy monument honors the French men and women who gave their lives for their country during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. If you want to see even more of the city from high above its chimneys and steeples, make the trek via metro and funicular to the highest point in all of Paris, butte Montmartre. While there, visit the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris, an impressive structure that was completed in 1914. Finally, the Eiffel Tower offers a panoramic view of the city by day and an enchanted spectacle of lights at night. You can brave the 600+ steps from the ground to the second level or use the lifts that will take you all the way to the top! If it’s the Eiffel Tower you want to see from a semi-bird’s eye angle, visit the Trocadero, considered by many to be the number one place to have your photograph taken with the Eiffel Tower as the backdrop. There’s nothing like sitting on the marble steps basking in the awe of this magnificent Tower that has graced the city skyline for over 120 years. The fascinating spectacle of this romantic city seems like an image taken straight from an artist’s canvas.

A trip to Paris would not be complete without a day spent at the Louvre, one of the world’s largest museums. The architecture of the building alone is enough to make anyone take a second look. Construction began around the 12^th century. While it has undergone major renovations and additions over the past several hundred years, visitors can journey to the crypt and see a portion of the medieval Louvre. While many people may think of the Louvre as an art museum, it is much more than that. This museum houses some of the greatest collections in the world, from the Code of Hammurabi to the Winged Victory of Samothrace. While there, be sure to venture over to the Denon Wing to see Da Vinci’s renowned depiction of Mona Lisa. Across the room, marvel at the beauty of my favorite work of art in the entire collection: The Wedding at Cana by Paolo Veronese. It is a massive painting that measures over 20 feet high and 30 feet wide. The subject of the painting is the miracle performed by Jesus in the Christian New Testament when he turned the water into wine. If you can pry yourself away from this awe-inspiring canvas, peruse the galleries filled with artwork and ancient relics from all over the world. Just don’t expect to see it all in one day, as there are over 35,000 exhibits on display. Still, you can see the works of art most important to you in one day, if that is all your itinerary will allow.

During your stay in France, you will discover, just as I did, that French cuisine absolutely lives up to its name. Whether you are searching for the classic French meal with French Onion Soup as the appetizer, Beef Bourguignon as your entrée, and chocolate mousse for dessert, or an eclectic fusion of flavors with your choice of Asian-inspired ginger-glazed salmon over a bed of long grain rice or a play on Italian cuisine with homemade lasagna, Paris has it all. One of my favorite places to eat in all of Paris is Le Petit Cler, a café that is always filled with local Parisians lingering over a glass of wine, fresh baguettes, and a deliciously prepared meal. This café has several options to choose from, including a succulently seasoned rump steak that is moist and tender, paired with a salad of freshly mixed greens, a baked potato, and a cream sauce that pleases the palette. Want some lighter fare? Their chicken salad features the freshest ingredients topped with strips of real chicken and their special house vinaigrette. Cap your meal off with one of their signature desserts, including a creamy vanilla custard or sinfully delectable strawberry tart.

Want to take a day trip outside of the city limits? Catch the metro and then transfer to the high speed rails for an excursion to the Palace of Versailles, an exquisite royal estate situated just 20 kilometers from Paris. If you are traveling with children or are still a child at heart, journey to Disneyland Paris. It’s a unique experience, even for those of us who have been to Disney’s Parks in the United States. Think classic Disney with a European flair. They maintain Disney classics like “it’s a small world” and Pirates of the Caribbean while bringing in new adventures such as Pinocchio’s Fantastic Journey, a dark ride featuring animatronics and a multisensory experience. Looking for something more grown-up? Visit the beaches of Normandy and pay tribute to the brave men and women who lost their lives in 1944 during a surprise attack and battle that raged on for over a month.

After an amazing day of sightseeing, enjoy a sunset cruise on the River Seine as you soak it all in, from the silhouette of Notre Dame Cathedral to the Eiffel Tower. Prepare to kiss your sweetheart as you sail beneath Lover’s Bridge, the perfect landmark for the capital of romance, as it showcases padlocks placed by couples from around the world. It is the perfect way to conclude a memorable journey through the City of Light. Whatever you choose to do during your stay in Paris, you’re guaranteed to have a delightful glance into the French culture and lifestyle. And don’t cry when it’s over. Just smile because it happened and remember that a return trip is a must if you desire to see and do it all! Paris is infinitely more than an once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Sensational Santorini

Want to venture to a picturesque paradise in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea? Then book a flight or set sail to the enchanting island of Santorini. Whether you choose to ride the cable car, hop in the saddle of a donkey, or walk the 600 steps to the top of the caldera, you’ll be greeted with a panoramic view that will leave you speechless. Once a single volcanic peak, an enormous eruption hundreds of years ago left behind a caldera 400 meters deep that is filled with water from the Aegean Sea. Although it was a catastrophic occurrence that destroyed earlier civilizations, today visitors enjoy the towering cliffs and breathtaking views from vistas as high as 980 feet above the brilliant blue waters below.

Santorini has everything you’re looking for in the Greek isles, from beautiful beaches to authentic Greek cuisine with a backdrop of picture perfect landscapes everywhere you look!

While there are several ways to get around the island, I recommend renting a car online before your arrival. When you reach the town of Fira, you will be greeted with a sign bearing your name. The rental car agent will meet you there and escort you to the parking lot where your transportation awaits! After a brief orientation meeting with the map, you’ll be on your way for a day that allows you to do exactly what you want! So take a drive around the island, see some of the sights, and the stop for a bite to eat at one of the local restaurants.

History and archeological buffs will want to make plans to visit Akrotiri, an excavation site of a Minoan Bronze Age settlement. Preserved by a modern covering, this site provides a rare look into the past as you explore this civilization that was buried by the catastrophic eruption that desolated the island during the second millennium B.C. If you want to dig even deeper into the history of Santorini and other regions of the world, you’ll want to visit the island’s museums including the Archeological Museum, Museum of Prehistoric Thira, George E. Argyros Museum, Megaro Cultural Center, Naval Maritime Museum, Lignos Folklore Museum, Icons and Relics Collection, Museum of Minerals and Fossils, and the Wine Museum. Please note that the majority of museums on the island are closed on Mondays, so you will need to plan your itinerary accordingly.

When you’re done exploring the history of the island, you can continue making some history of your own by driving toward Mount Prophet Elijah, the island’s highest peak standing at 567 meters. Nearby, enter the charming village known as Perissa. You’ll definitely want to spend a good bit of time here. Whether you want to stop into one of the many bars or restaurants for some refreshments or get a relaxing massage on the beach, this is truly an island oasis. Of course, you may choose to follow in my footsteps, leaving the landlubbers behind and plunging into the dark blue sea, enjoying a refreshing swim as you watch the boats sail smoothly over the horizon. Back on the beach, take a moment to sink your toes into the warm volcanic sand, a unique experience that you can brag about to your friends and family back home.

Whatever you choose to do on this gorgeous Greek isle, be sure to savor each and every single moment. Stop to take a photograph, talk to the locals, or shop for locally handmade goods. One of my favorite experiences on Santorini was when my dad and I stopped spontaneously at a local bakery in a remote area away from the town of Fira, away from the tourists. It was frequented by locals taking bread and other goods home to feed their families. Deciding what to order was a feat in itself as we stood there mesmerized by the trays upon trays of freshly baked bread, pastries, cookies, and other culinary confections. After much indecision, we chose to sample the classic Greek baklava and an apple spice cake, both of which were delicious and perfect in every way. Having purchased a large bottle of milk, the owner graciously offered us two cups so that we could share. This was the perfect way to cap off our stay in Santorini. Sitting in the open air patio, looking out at the Mediterranean Sea, I was fascinated by the beauty of the landscape, the delicately refined taste of the sweet treats, and the notion that I was enjoying life as a citizen of Santorini, at least for the better part of a day.

All too soon it was time to return the rental car and make our way to the port to catch the tender back to our cruise ship. As we prepared to board the cable car, I stood there for a moment looking out at the town of Fira. Briefly, I wondered if I would ever have the opportunity to stand on top of this glorious remnant of a volcano again. Just as suddenly as the thought came, it fluttered away. For a trip to Santorini is not an once-in-a-lifetime experience. There’s something special about this island, a sort of tugging that I know one day will bring me back to the enchanted beauty of Santorini.

New York, New York!

From Bronx to Brooklyn and Manhattan to Queens, New York City is an eclectic mix of culture and cuisine. In this city, there truly is something for everyone. The moment you step onto the sidewalks of New York, you will find yourself humming Sinatra’s classic tune as you proudly proclaim, “I want to be a part of it, New York, New York!”

The moment I walked up the steps of the subway station, the first building I laid eyes on was Macy’s Department Store right in the heart of Herald Square. Having grown up faithfully watching “Miracle on 34^th Street” every single Christmas, I must admit that I was a little awestruck to actually be planting my feet on 34^th Street. For me to be in New York City during the holiday season made it even more magical and it felt as if they must have been right when they told Virginia that there was indeed a Santa Claus.

If you plan your trip to New York during the holidays, you must take a moment to admire the Christmas window displays outside of Macy’s in particular. This year the windows featured Make-a-Wish children, so they were not only eye-catching, but also pulled on your heartstrings as well. Unlike your average department store windows, these wondrous windows become striking works of 4D art, complete with an elaborate multimedia experience that will drop your jaw and raise your eyebrows.

After your “window shopping,” make sure you saunter inside to merely marvel at the sheer size of America’s largest department store that spans the length and width of an entire city block and boasts ten and a half levels of eye-catching displays filled a wide array of merchandise to appeal to the entire family. At Christmastime, a visit with children means a visit to Santa Land and the Puppet Theatre. You’ll also want to check out the seasonal décor department, as it is a Christmas wonderland in itself! There are several restaurants inside the store for your convenience as well. If you’re like me, you may choose to shop the entire time and end up buying a few things, too. Why not? You’re at Macy’s Herald Square! So shop till you drop and then get ready for the next adventure in this concrete jungle!

Has all of this shopping made you hungry? Head on over to Lombardi’s Pizza, deemed America’s First Pizzeria. Even at 3:00 p.m. in the afternoon, there was an hour wait. But let me tell you, it was well worth the wait! Want to taste the competition? Then head on over to Grimaldi’s Pizza underneath the Brooklyn Bridge! Both of these pizzerias are among the small number of restaurants who still bake their pizzas in a coal-fired brick oven. Having been friendly rivals for years, they both fire up a scrumptious slice that makes your mouth water! But I am sure you are wondering, which one is best?

Grimaldi’s and Lombardi’s both have crust that is perfectly thin and crisp, tomato sauce made with fresh tomatoes, and fresh mozzarella cheese and basil. And of course, you can add whatever toppings you like! At Lombardi’s, we chose to add pepperoni and meatballs to our pie. Their meatballs are homemade, sliced in half, and laid on top of the pizza before it is briefly tucked inside the 900 degree oven. The addition of meatballs made the flavor of this already delicious pizza rocket to the moon and back. At Grimaldi’s, we chose to go simplistic with a classic pepperoni. Ultimately, though, there was nothing simple about this pizza. The complex flavor profile they achieved put them over the top on the New York thin crust pizza scale. Along with their out-of-this-world pizza, Grimaldi’s maintains an intimate family atmosphere paired with the musical talents of Ernie Barry, an accordion player with vocal talents that will make you think that Sinatra’s back in town. Whichever you choose, Grimaldi’s or Lombardi’s, your thin crust pizza will have you wondering if you have suddenly been transported into the heart of Italy!

Your trip will not be complete without a visit to Rockefeller Center, especially at Christmastime where you can see the towering tree of lights. From there, feel free to parade down the center of Times Square as you journey to Broadway. We chose to take in a show on 42^nd Street at the New Amsterdam Theater. There’s something quite magical about sitting in your very own private box as you sit back, relax, and enjoy a positively perfect production of Mary Poppins! It truly was supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! From the acting to the dancing and the singing to the orchestra, everything was brilliant. A must-see performance for young and old alike!

After the show, drop down into the subway and make your way to Katz’s Delicatessen. Feast your eyes on the mountainous peaks of freshly prepared corned beef, pastrami, and anything else your heart desires! Their sandwiches have even been featured on the Food Network and rightly so! The meat is tender, juicy, and has unimaginable flavor oozing out of every bite! There is a solid crowd even at 3:00 a.m. on a Saturday night, so you know it has to be good! The perfect place to chow down on some deliciousness morning, noon, or night!

If you are in the city on a Sunday, drop by the Brooklyn Tabernacle, the home of the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. This Grammy Award-winning choir recently had the opportunity to share their talents at the Presidential Inauguration. Let me tell you, their talent is unsurpassed and hearing them in person is an experience like no other. I had the privilege of seeing their Christmas program, “Christmas Once Again,” and it was the best Christmas program I have ever seen in my life. The music reached down into the depths of my soul. The lyrics spoke to the innermost part of my heart. Every word spoken, every note sung, and every move made ministered to my heart and soul in such a special way. It was one of those days I will remember for the rest of my life.

Of course, a visit to New York would still not be complete without a trip to Central Park, the Empire State Building, Trump Tower, the Statue of Liberty, Wall Street, and so much more. If all of this sightseeing is making you hungry, stop by Joe’s Gourmet for an affordable meal where you can literally get anything your taste buds are begging for from Italian to Sushi and Philly Cheesesteaks to Salad. A few blocks away, take a moment to wander through the 9/11 Memorial, remembering those who lost their lives on that fateful day in 2011. The most touching aspect of the memorial is the Survivor Tree, a tree that was scorched but has remained standing as a reminder that Americans will persevere against all odds.

George Washington referred to it as the “Seat of Empire.” In the 1920’s and 30’s, jazz musicians first used the term “The Big Apple.” It has been called the city that never sleeps, the Metropolis, and the financial capital of the world. Boasting the largest number of skyscrapers than any other city in the U.S., it could even be referred to as the City of Skyscrapers.
