I've been a freelance editor for over two years now. Well, three years if you count the year I spent training in the amazing and rigorous Editing program at the University of Washington. And well, nearly twenty if you count all the editing and proofreading I did as a project manager and then as a blogger. But I digress. Late last year, I was hired by a fabulous new client: Quiltfolk magazine.

Quiltfolk's mission is to provide a home for American quilt culture. In each quarterly issue of this gorgeous magazine, a team of writers and photographers heads to a new state or region in the United States with the purpose of documenting quilts and the people who make and love them. The magazine is printed on lush paper, with beautifully written (and edited!) articles, breathtaking photography, and no advertisements.

Calling Quiltfolk a magazine is inaccurate -- a massive understatement, really. It is more like a book, something to cherish and collect. And now Quiltfolk also produces quilt patterns -- both vintage and modern. I don't know what's next but I'm thrilled to be part of this team. This work combines all my favorite things: sewing, travel, culture, and of course writing and editing.

Working with the Quiltfolk team is a blast and an inspiration. The amazing stories collected by our team have lit my creative spark. I've been itching to get back to creative writing and to make quilts lately. So you might see some new posts from me as I dust off my sewing machine.

First, I thought I'd revisit the quilts I've made over the years. It's good to track one's progress and collecting photos in one post will make a good archive for my reference. Maybe you'll enjoy seeing what I've made too! Look for that post and pics soon.

The Shop Is Closed

Hello!

I hope this finds you all well. I've been meaning to make this announcement for oh, over a year. My Jenny Bartoy Handmade business is closed.

In 2016, I made the move to freelance editing and writing full-time and found I no longer had the time to sew for clients and to run my Etsy shop. I had so much fun making and selling handmade items for five years and I'm grateful to all the friends and customers who supported my business.

I provide literary and business editing services, ranging from manuscript evaluation to line editing and proofreading. You can also find me on Instagram @jbartoywriter or Twitter @jbartoy. I'd love to hear from you.

What a fun surprise to receive an email from Homespun magazine today, letting me know that my fabric tree artwork is featured in their February 2016 issue!

Wristlet Pouches

I am excited about these cute pouches. They are super stylish and feature a removable wrist band to make them easy to carry around. They measure 6 x 9 inches, the perfect size to stash essentials like your phone, make-up and even a small wallet.

My goal with these wristlet pouches was to make them high quality and durable. The zipper is metal. The outside fabric is canvas, with a dash of natural linen. The inside is lined with a modern cotton, and the whole thing is interfaced. They feel sturdy.

They are priced at $34 which makes them a perfect holiday gift for sisters, teachers, best friends and yourself!

Hello friends!

I will be participating in the Holiday Arts + Crafts Open House in Seattle again this year. The event is 2 days long: Saturday and Sunday, November 21 and 22. Save the date and come on by! I've been busy at the sewing machine, cranking out customer favorites like fabric buckets and pot holders and creating new designs like long table runners, tote bags and stylish diapers-and-wipes clutches. Fat Quarters: Book Review and Giveaway!

I designed and wrote two projects for the book Fat Quarters: Small Fabrics, More Than 50 Big Ideas. This new title is published by Lark Crafts and comes out on March 17, tomorrow!

I'm excited to share a little bit about the book and my projects with you today. Bonus: Lark Crafts has offered one copy to give away to a lucky reader! So read through the post for your chance to win this book.

Fat Quarters is a lovely collection of simple projects featuring small cuts of fabric (called fat quarters, for you sewing novices). You'll find patterns for home wares, toys, accessories, quilts and more, organized in sections. There is a nice refresher section at the beginning which provides an overview of techniques, and a template section at the end.

I embraced the challenge of working with fat quarters and tried to maximize the results for the small investment in fabric. In the pattern for Circle Hot Pot Pads, I provide two variations for making these round pot holders. Each version uses just two fat quarters. You can make a coordinating pair of hot pads (blue), or two identical ones (red).

I loved creating the Fabric Baskets project. With just three fat quarters, you can create a set of two coordinating nesting baskets, perfect for knick knacks or bathroom basics. These would make a great baby gift to use in the nursery for diapers and baby lotion.

I don't think I'll ever get over the joy of seeing my name in print. I'm a little giddy.

Fat Quarters is full of creative ideas from a variety of prolific and talented designers. I loved seeing familiar names like Maureen Cracknell and Shannon Cook in the book. (Please excuse the craptacular quality of these photos -- it is pouring rain here in the Puget Sound, and there is no satisfying amount of daylight to be found!)

Projects vary in difficulty from beginner to intermediate. There are some fun and more complex patchwork projects in the book, including a few favorites of mine pictured below. I might have to try these out!

Weighted Items for Calm and Focus

My 7-year-old attends a fabulous elementary school in Seattle. Queen Anne Elementary follows a Creative Curriculum and embraces Social Emotional Learning as an essential part of kids' education.

A few months ago, I was approached by QAE's Social Emotional Learning Committee to create weighted items for use in the classroom. The pressure of these heavy bags is very soothing for anyone with sensory struggles, stress and anxiety, or simply a case of the wiggles.

I made a variety of weighted lap bags and weighted shoulder pads for use by the kiddos as tools for calm and focus. You can see a few examples in the picture above, in our school colors of purple and orange. You can read more details on the school's SEL blog here: "Tools for Calm and Focus"

I'd be happy to take custom requests for these. I think they belong in every home. Both my kids and I have enjoyed trying these out while I was working on them. They feel great!

These weighted items consist of an heavy-duty cotton insert filled with rice (3-6 lbs, depending on size) and double-stitched all around, inserted into a cover made from either muslin (100% cotton), flannel (100% cotton), or polar fleece (100% polyester). The cover is removable and washable, with a Velcro opening.

Placemats!

I have been making table runners for years now and am often asked, "Do you make placemats too?". Well, I didn't --until now! I recently completed 3 sets of placemats and they are available in my Etsy shop. Several more are cut and waiting to be sewn.

These placemats feature a combination of natural linen and a cotton print. The juxtaposed fabric blocks contrast in texture and color for a modern look. Sparse quilting lines through a thick inner layer of cotton batting provide a soft cushion for dishes and silverware.

They come in a set of 4, at a cost of $60 ($15 each) in the Placemats section of my Etsy shop. I am happy to create custom placemats with a fabric of your choice, or to make placemats to match a table runner. Contact me at jennybartoy {AT} gmail {DOT} com to get the process started.

Ornament Experiments

Embroidery is such a soothing craft activity and, bonus: it is portable. I had much fun experimenting with stitching this holiday season and decided to create a few ornaments out of small embroidery hoops. This is a trend I've noticed for a few years on Pinterest and Etsy, you simply loop a ribbon in the hoop clasp and boom, you've got an ornament!

I decided to use my go-to material, linen, as the background and to create simple snowflake patterns. I found some gorgeous (and ahem, pricy) metallic embroidery floss at my local fabric store, in both silver and gold. I also used white and a vibrant red. The ribbon for hanging is satin rattail in coordinating colors.

I sold a bunch of these ornaments at the Holiday Arts & Crafts Open House, but a few more are available in my Etsy shop. I'll definitely make more of these next year!

The Holiday Arts & Crafts Open House was a huge success this year! Thank you to all my friends and loyal customers who came by. Such fun to see you all at Red Square Yoga Studio in Seattle!

For the 3rd year in a row, I will be a vendor at the Holiday Arts + Crafts Open House at Red Square Yoga in Seattle, WA. The event will take place on Saturday, November 22 from 12 to 6pm.

There should be plenty of unique, handmade gifts to browse and purchase. Great opportunity for some holiday shopping! We will have live acoustic guitar music and some drinks and treats to enjoy.

I am hard at work on table runners and fabric baskets among other things. I am hoping to have a variety of items priced between $10 and $70. I plan on introducing some new designs too: placements, nesting baskets and ornaments. We'll see how much I actually get done before the big day!

Halloween Ninjas

Hello!

It's been FOREVER since I last posted, I am sorry! And this will just be a quick drive-by post to show you the costumes I made for my kiddos for Halloween. In previous years, I posted about my costume-making adventures on Stumbles & Stitches, but I'm trying to share more on this blog now --and doing a terrible job of it, ha!

This year, my boys wanted to be ninjas. So exciting --not. Henry had his mind set on Kai from LEGO Ninjago and Ben wanted to be a "regular" ninja.

I bought a whole lot of knit fabric and some metallic and pleather yardage too. The awesome part of this year's costume sewing is that I learned how to sew with knits!! I'm so excited! And it was so easy! I just looked at my Janome's user manual and set my machine on the tricot stitch. Oh, and I got a jersey needle. Done! It worked beautifully and a new world has now opened to me, filled with fun stretchy projects.

Anyway, back to the kiddos and their Halloween costumes.

I don't have time to get into the how-to and all those details because I have to get back to work on making things for the Holiday Arts + Crafts Open House in which I'm participating again this year. Bird Apron for Teacher Appreciation

This week is Teacher Appreciation Week. Have you thanked and hugged a teacher?

My son Ben is in first grade and I'm class coordinator this year, which is a fancy term for "room mom". For teacher appreciation, I orchestrated a week-long celebration for our fabulous teacher with the help of many other parents from our class. It's been so fun, and truly wonderful to see her getting all this love and appreciation.

The first graders helped with a couple of things, including making an apron. Their teacher loves to cook and loves birds. Their school follows a project-based curriculum, and their current project for Spring is "Birds". It worked out beautifully!

The first step in this project was to prep bird templates. I searched for "bird silhouettes" in Google Images and printed a few. I transferred the outlines to recycled cereal boxes and cut them out. I also ironed fusible web to a whole bunch of fabric scraps in a "Spring-y" color scheme.

Next, I sneaked into their art class (with the art teacher's approval!) and had the kiddos take turns at picking their favorite fabric scrap and favorite bird template. They traced their bird on the paper backing of the fabric and wrote their name.

Back at my sewing table, I cut the birds out, making sure to respect the imperfect tracing of each child. It gave each bird some personality.

Using one of my own aprons as a template, I made an apron with green linen. I made binding and ties out of a happy floral cotton print.

I played with the placement of the birds, trying to balance the colors and shapes. When I was happy with the layout, I took a digital photo to have a reference. I also drew a rough "map" in my sketchbook with the name of the kid belonging to each bird.

Time to fuse and stitch each bird onto the apron. I actually brought my iron to the floor to quickly half-fuse the birds before picking the apron up and moving it to my ironing table. It doesn't look like it messed up our horribly scratched hardwood floors any more than they already were! I stitched with a regular straight stitch rather than a zigzag one. The birds may fray a bit with washing, but they should hopefully hold up.

Ta-da!

I wrote the name of each child under their bird in fine-point Sharpie and heat-set it with my iron. From my brief research on the internet, I found that this should withstand a few washes.

I am so happy with how it turned out!

To accompany the apron, I embellished a wooden spatula with stripes of colorful paint. This is an OXO spatula and I love how substantial it feels. With the embellishment, I can see it being used to serve salads at summer barbecues or picnics.

The spatula was unfinished wood so I didn't need to prep it before painting. The stripes are painted freehand with several coats of acrylic paint. I finished them with a couple coats of clear water-based varnish.

To round out this cooking lover's gift, we got the teacher the school cookbook.

The kids were so excited to give their teacher this handmade gift. Judging from the tears and hugs, I think she was happy!

An Update!

Hello friends,

First off, my heartfelt apologies for the radio silence these past few months. After the craziness of the holiday season, the beginning of the new year was unsettling. I felt in limbo between sewing, writing and family and couldn't quite find my mojo to blog. A few months into 2014, I'm back on track with some exciting news!

I designed and wrote 2 projects for the brand new book Never Been Stitched! This is a fun book of 45 no-sew and low-sew projects, edited by the lovely Amanda Carestio and published by Lark Crafts (February 2014). I hope this is the beginning of a long relationship with Lark Crafts, as I already have projects sent off for another book to be released in early 2015. I'm so excited! Stay tuned for a review and GIVEAWAY of Never Been Stitched here on my blog. (Ahem, on Monday.)

Speaking of designing projects, one of my professional goals for 2014 is to create patterns for sale on Etsy. I have so many ideas but I've finally picked one to start with. I hope it will be ready to unveil soon!

And finally, after several years spent co-writing the blog Stumbles & Stitches with my dear friend Angel, it was time to put it to sleep -- or at least, make the announcement, since it's been dormant for nearly a year. All archives are still available to browse, but for the foreseeable future, we won't be blogging. If you followed our adventures over there, do not despair. I will be sharing my craft and sewing projects HERE instead, along with my Etsy creations! I am pumped!!

This one pairs natural linen with a modern pearl bracelet design in white on green. It's hard to get this green right in photos (especially because it was extremely gloomy today!), but it's a yummy green reminiscent of swiss chard, emerald, moss and Christmas trees! I think it would be lovely year-round, but works great with red and gold for holiday decor.

This runner is "centerpiece" style and measures approximately 35 x 16 inches. It includes a layer of soft flannel inside, and is backed with a crisp white cotton. Machine washable on cold, tumble dry low, steam iron to get wrinkles out.

Hello friends,

I have worked so hard lately to organize a small craft show in Queen Anne, and to build lots of stock for it. And the day is finally here!!

The 5th annual Holiday Arts + Crafts Open House is TODAY, Saturday December 7 from 12pm to 6pm. This event will take place at Red Square Yoga Studio and Muse Coffee on the 10th Ave W block between Howe St and Crockett St in Seattle. There will be treats and (warm) drinks to enjoy, and some live guitar music as well!

I have been cranking things out like a mad woman and will have tons of new designs at the Open House. Here is a preview! If you're local, I hope to see you there.

My table runners are thoughtfully handmade with a combination of bold cotton prints and natural linen, for a look that is both earthy and modern. My Wonky Stripes table runners feature large stripes of linen and cotton. A layer of soft flannel and a crisp cotton linen keep them sturdy and flat. They measure approximately 36 by 16 inches. My Quilted table runners feature one catchy cotton print, quilted in a large zigzag and bound with natural linen. A layer of cotton batting makes them cozy and soft. They measure approximately 42 x 17 inches.

Note: This giveaway is for a ready-to-ship table runner, not a custom item.
