Let’s face it—getting kids to smile naturally for photos can feel like an impossible task. If you’ve ever tried to snap a picture only to be met with forced smiles or grumpy faces, you’re not alone! But here’s the good news: with a few simple tricks, you can make taking photos fun for your kids (and way less stressful for you!).

Here’s my tried-and-true tips for capturing real, genuine smiles from your children during a photoshoot.

1. Make Picture-Taking a Game

Kids love to play, so why not turn your next photoshoot into a game? Ask them to play peekaboo behind a tree or challenge them to a race while you snap away. You can even create a photo scavenger hunt where they strike funny poses as part of their “missions.” When your kids are having fun, you’re much more likely to capture natural smiles and authentic expressions.

2. Be Silly and Tell Jokes

Laughter is the secret to natural smiles. Tell your kids a funny joke, make silly faces behind the camera, or even break out into a goofy dance! When you’re lighthearted and having fun, your kids will relax and show off their real smiles. Plus, candid moments of laughter can lead to some of the best photos.

3. Capture Action Shots

Kids don’t always like to sit still—and that’s okay! Let them run, jump, or twirl around while you take pictures. Some of the best expressions happen mid-action, when your child is fully engaged in the moment. Try capturing them while they’re playing with a favorite toy, riding a bike, or even blowing bubbles. These activities create excitement and joy, which will shine through in your photos.

4. Let Your Kids Take Charge

Sometimes, giving your child a bit of control can help them feel more comfortable. Let them choose a prop, a location, or even a pose for the photos. You can even let them take a few pictures themselves! Allowing them to have some input makes the experience more enjoyable and keeps them engaged.

5. Choose Natural Settings and Lighting

Kids are often more relaxed outdoors, where they can move around freely and enjoy themselves. Taking photos outside in natural light—whether it’s in a park, backyard, or beach—not only enhances your photots but also allows your child to be themselves. The fresh air and open space can make for more genuine smiles and spontaneous moments.

6. Don’t “Say Cheese!”

Asking kids to “say cheese” often results in stiff, unnatural grins. Instead, try talking to them about something they love or tell them a funny story to bring out a more authentic smile. Focus on making the moment fun, and the natural smiles will come on their own.

7. Be Patient and Have Fun!

Finally, remember to be patient! If your child is getting frustrated or tired, take a break and come back later. Keeping the experience positive is your best bet. A calm, fun environment will help your child feel relaxed and happy and enjoy spending time together. Change it up to taking photos of them in their natural environment, like the bath!

Taking Photos Should be Fun!

Taking photos of your kids should be fun for both you and them! By turning your next photoshoot into a game, staying lighthearted, and giving your children room to be themselves, you’ll be able to capture natural, joyful smiles that you’ll cherish forever.

So the next time you pick up your camera, try out these tips and get ready for some authentic, happy moments!

Got a stack of old family photos you want to preserve but don’t know where to start? Don’t worry—digitizing them is easier than you think! In this guide, I’ll walk you through how to scan your old photos and keep everything organized so you can find and enjoy your memories whenever you want.

1. Start by Sorting Your Photos

Before you jump into scanning, take a little time to sort your photos. Trust me, it’ll make your life easier later. Here’s how you can organize them:

By Year: Want to create a visual timeline? Sort your photos chronologically by decade or year.

By Event: Group them by special occasions—birthdays, holidays, family vacations.

By Person: Make categories for each family member, so you can quickly find your favorite shots of Grandma or your childhood self!

This quick prep will help you stay organized during the digitizing process.

2. Pick the Right Scanner

If you’ve got a lot of photos to scan, the right tool can save you tons of time. One solid option I recommend is the Epson FastFoto FF-680W. Why? Because it’s FAST—this thing can scan up to 36 photos per minute. Not only that, but it can automatically fix orientation and restore faded colors, so you don’t have to spend hours editing afterward. And it’s wireless, which makes the whole process super convenient.

3. Set Your Scanner for the Best Results

To make sure your digital copies are crisp and clear (but not massive in file size), you’ll want to adjust your settings a bit:

DPI (Dots Per Inch): Go for 300 DPI for everyday photos. If you’re looking to archive or blow them up later, crank it up to 600 DPI.

File Format: Use JPEG for smaller files that are easy to share.

Color Mode: For color photos, choose Color; for black-and-white images, go with Grayscale.

4. Create an Easy-to-Find Folder System

Once you’ve got everything scanned, it’s time to organize your digital files. You don’t want to lose track of these precious memories!

Folders and Subfolders: I really like to organize all of my photos by folders by year/month that way it is consistent and easy to find specific photos. But if you prefer, you can start with a main folder like “Family Photos” and create subfolders for specific years, events, or people. For example, “1990s Holidays” or “Mom’s Old Pics.”

Consistent File Names: Keep things simple by naming each file something like Year_Month_Event.jpg (e.g., 1995_December_Christmas.jpg). It’ll make searching for that one holiday photo way easier!

5. Backup Your Photos—The Most Important Step!

Now that everything’s digitized, don’t forget to back them up. You never know when tech will fail!

External Hard Drive: Save a copy of your photos on an external hard drive. If your computer crashes, you’ll still have everything safe.

Cloud Storage: For extra peace of mind, back up your photos in the cloud using services like Amazon Photos, Dropbox, or iCloud. Bonus: you can access them from anywhere!

Wrapping Up

Digitizing your old photos isn’t as overwhelming as it seems—especially with the right tools like the Epson FastFoto FF-680W and a simple organization system. Before you know it, you’ll have all those priceless memories saved, backed up, and ready to enjoy anytime. Happy scanning!

We all have thousands of photos sitting on our phones or hidden away in the cloud, and while scrolling through them brings back memories, there’s something truly special about holding a printed photo in your hands. Whether it’s a photo album you can pull out on a rainy day or a gallery wall filled with the smiles of the people you love most, printing your family photos is a way to make your memories feel real and lasting. And when it comes to printing those precious moments, I always turn to Mpix.com.

Why Print Your Family Photos?

Before I dive into why Mpix is my favorite, let me tell you a quick story.

A few months ago, my daughter stumbled across an old family photo album tucked away on a shelf. She plopped down on the couch, flipping through pages of birthdays, vacations, and everyday moments. Soon enough, we were laughing together, talking about the stories behind each picture—memories that I hadn’t thought about in years. It hit me then: photos aren’t just pictures. They’re snapshots of our lives, and when they’re printed and displayed, they become a part of our everyday environment, reminding us of the moments we treasure most.

Sure, digital photos are convenient, but there’s a deeper connection when you can physically touch those memories. Plus, when you print and frame them, they instantly add a personal, warm touch to your home that makes it feel like your space.

www.mpix.com

Why Mpix.com Is My Go-To for Printing

Now, I know there are tons of places where you can print photos, but after years of printing photos professionally for my clients, Mpix.com has become my top choice for printing your family photos for several reasons:

1. Top-Notch Quality

Quality matters. You want your printed photos to look just as good—or better—than they do on your phone, right? Mpix delivers on that every single time. Their prints come out vibrant, sharp, and long-lasting, whether you’re printing a simple 4×6 or a larger canvas to hang on your wall. Plus, they offer different finishes like lustre, glossy, or even metallic if you want to get a little fancy!

2. Super Easy to Use

I’m not one to spend hours figuring out complicated websites. Thankfully, Mpix makes the whole process incredibly simple. You just upload your photos, pick your sizes, choose your finishes, and voilà—you’re good to go. It’s quick and painless, which is a huge plus for busy moms like us who are juggling a million things at once.

3. Fast Shipping

Who wants to wait forever for their photos? Mpix gets it. Their shipping is fast, and the packaging keeps everything safe and secure. I’ve never had an issue with bent or damaged prints, which is a big relief when you’re excited to display a new set of photos in your home.

4. Lots of Custom Options

What I love about Mpix is the variety. Whether you’re looking for prints to slip into an album or a larger canvas for your living room wall, they’ve got it all. They also offer beautiful photo books, cards, and even calendars, so you can get creative with how you showcase your memories.

5. Affordable but High-Quality

For the quality you get, Mpix’s prices are super reasonable. You’re not paying professional photographer prices, but the prints still come out looking professional. It’s a win-win if you’re looking to print a bunch of photos without breaking the bank.

Making Your Home Feel Like Home

Once you’ve got your photos printed, don’t just tuck them away in a drawer! Think about creating a gallery wall in your living room or hallway, framing a few special moments and swapping them out over time. Even placing a small framed photo on your desk or nightstand can brighten your day and make you smile when you need it most.

The best part? Your kids will love looking back on those photos. Years down the road, they’ll pull out those prints and reminisce about family trips, birthday parties, or even those everyday moments that turned into memories.

www.mpix.com

Bottom Line

In the end, life moves fast, and our digital photos can easily get lost in the shuffle. By printing those special moments, you’re not only preserving them—you’re making them a visible, tangible part of your life and your home.

For me, Mpix.com makes the whole process easy, affordable, and high-quality. So, go ahead—print those photos, frame them, hang them up, and fill your home with the memories that mean the most. You’ll be so glad you did.

Looking to give your home a personal touch? A photo gallery wall is the perfect way to display cherished memories while adding a stylish element to your decor. Whether you’re working with family portraits, travel photos, or a mix of special moments, here’s how to create a stunning gallery wall in just three steps.

Step 1: Choose a Theme and Layout

Before you start hammering nails into the wall, take some time to think about the overall theme and layout of your gallery. Do you want a cohesive look, like black-and-white family photos, or a more eclectic mix of images? You could also pair photos with art pieces, quotes, or mementos for added variety.

Layout options:

Grid: Symmetrical rows and columns for a clean, modern look.

Asymmetrical: A more playful, freestyle arrangement where no two frames align exactly.

Linear: A straight horizontal or vertical line for a sleek, minimalist feel.

Tip: Lay out your frames on the floor first to experiment with the arrangement until you’re happy with it. Use painter’s tape to mark the arrangement on the wall before hanging.

Step 2: Select the Right Frames

The frames you choose can make or break the overall aesthetic. For a clean and cohesive look, opt for frames of the same color or material, such as wood, metal, or classic black. If you prefer an eclectic vibe, mix and match different frames—just make sure they complement each other in style.

www.framebridge.com

Consider these options:

Uniform frames: For a polished and minimalist look.

Mismatched frames: Adds character and charm to a more relaxed, boho-inspired space.

Matting: Adding a mat can give your photos an elevated, gallery-style feel.

Pro tip: If you’re working with different-sized frames, try to balance the visual weight. Place larger frames near the center and smaller ones around the edges to keep the arrangement balanced.

Step 3: Hang Your Photos Like a Pro

www.westelm.com

Now that you’ve chosen your layout and frames, it’s time to hang your photos! This can be the trickiest part, but with a little planning, you’ll avoid unnecessary holes in the wall.

Here’s how to get it right:

Start from the center: Begin with the central piece or anchor photo, then work outward. This helps maintain balance and ensures your gallery wall doesn’t veer off to one side.

Measure and space evenly: Use a level and measuring tape to keep your lines straight. Typically, 2-3 inches of space between frames creates a unified yet airy look.

Use hanging tools: Command strips or picture hooks can save your walls from too much damage. For heavier frames, opt for wall anchors or screws to keep them secure.

Once everything is hung, step back and admire your new gallery wall! It’s a beautiful way to bring personality and warmth into your home.

Bonus Tip: Update Your Gallery Over Time

One of the best parts about a photo gallery wall is that it’s never truly “finished.” As your family grows or you capture new memories, feel free to swap out photos or rearrange frames to keep things fresh. It’s a dynamic feature in your home that can evolve just as your life does!

Creating a photo gallery wall might seem daunting at first, but with these three steps, you’ll have a beautiful display of your favorite moments in no time. Happy decorating!

In today’s digital age, snapping photos has never been easier. With the convenience of smartphones and digital cameras, we capture countless moments, but the real challenge lies in keeping them organized and easily accessible. Why should you invest time and effort into tidying up your digital photos? Let’s look at eight reasons why you need to organize your digital photo library!

1. Easily find your photos

Have you ever spent hours scrolling through your camera roll or computer files in search of a specific picture? Organizing your digital photos saves you valuable time and reduces the stress associated with hunting down images. When you organize your digital photos, you create a structured system that allows you to quickly locate any image. By categorizing photos into folders based on dates and events you can quickly locate the photo you’re looking for, allowing you to focus on enjoying the memory rather than searching endlessly for it.

2. Relive the magic of your photos

Photos have the incredible power to transport us back in time to relive our most cherished memories. When your photos are organized, you can easily revisit significant moments in your life. Whether it’s the joy of a birthday celebration, the serenity of a vacation, or the excitement of your child’s first steps, organized photos offer a simple way to stroll down memory lane.

3. Share the love of your family photos

We all love sharing our adventures with friends and family, and digital photo organization makes this a breeze. No more excuses about not being able to find “that one picture.” Now you can quickly dig out the photo or album you want and send it off. Plus, collaboration tools let you and your loved ones add memories to shared collections, creating a digital scrapbook that everyone can contribute to.

4. Keep them safe from loss or damage

Technology mishaps can strike at any time, from hard drive crashes to accidental deletions. By keeping your photos organized, you make the process of backing up your collection more straightforward. Proper organization includes backing up your photos to external drives and the Cloud. Regularly backing up your organized photo collection ensures that your memories are safe even in the face of unforeseen disasters providing you with peace of mind.

5. Declutter your digital space

Just as a tidy physical space is more inviting and pleasant, the same goes for your digital world. Organizing your photos declutters your digital environment, making it easier to navigate and enjoy. It’s like giving your digital life a breath of fresh air and creating a more efficient and pleasant digital space.

6. Get creative with photo projects

Your organized photo library serves as the foundation for fun and creative projects. Whether it’s creating a photo album, a personalized calendar, or unique gifts for your loved ones, an organized photo collection streamlines the process. It allows you to easily gather and arrange the perfect set of images for your creative ventures.

7. Preserve your family history

Photos are like the diary of your family’s adventures. When your photos are organized, you’re essentially preserving your family’s legacy for generations to come. Organized pics tell the story of your family’s journey, creating a connection with the past and future. It’s like leaving a fantastic family history book for your kids and grandkids to flip through!

8. Enjoy your photos

Ultimately, your photos are meant to be enjoyed, shared, and relived. An organized photo library facilitates this by making it easier to navigate and revisit beautiful moments. Whether it’s flipping through digital photo albums, creating slideshows, or simply scrolling through your memories, organization enhances your enjoyment of your photo collection.

In summary, organizing your digital photo library is an investment that pays off in many ways, from saving you time to preserving your precious memories and enhancing your overall enjoyment of your photo collection. At JenFoto our goal is to take away the overwhelm your photo library gives you, and help you find joy in your photo memories.
Apple Photos is a “Sync” Not a Backup

We all love capturing memories through photos and videos, and with smartphones, it’s easier than ever to store and manage these moments. Apps like Apple Photos make syncing your pictures across devices a breeze. But there’s a big difference between syncing and true backup, and understanding this can save you from losing precious memories. Let’s break it down.

What is a Sync?

Apple Photos uses iCloud to sync your photos and videos, meaning they appear on all your Apple devices automatically. Snap a photo on your iPhone, and it shows up on your iPad and Mac too. This is super convenient and lets you access your pictures from anywhere.

The Downside to Syncing

However, syncing is not the same as backing up. Syncing means the same file is available on all your devices. If you delete a photo from one device, it disappears from all of them. Plus, if something goes wrong with your iCloud account or Apple’s servers, you could lose everything.

What is a Backup?

A true backup means making additional copies of your photos and storing them separately. This could be on an external hard drive or a cloud service like Amazon Photos. True backups protect your photos even if your main storage fails. The SIMPLE PHOTO SYSTEM recommends at least one local backup and one cloud backup to keep your photos safe.

How to Keep Your Photos Safe

You need a solid backup plan!

Here’s what you can do:

Backup your photos in 3 locations: Besides iCloud, use external hard drives and other cloud storage services like Amazon Photos or Dropbox to make extra copies of your photos.

Regularly Back Up Your Photos: Have a system to back up your photos regularly. Automate the process if you can. The SIMPLE PHOTO SYSTEM walks you through exactly how to set it up and maintain it.

Check Your Backups: Occasionally check your backups to make sure they’re working correctly. You can do this by spot-checking some files or using tools provided by your backup service.

While Apple Photos is great for syncing, it’s crucial to understand the difference between syncing and a true backup. Relying only on syncing can leave your photos at risk for loss. By having a solid backup strategy with copies stored in different places, you can ensure your memories are safe and sound.

Ready to organize and back up all of your photos? We would love to have you join us in the SIMPLE PHOTO SYSTEM, making it easy for you to enjoy your photos without fear of loss.

With a smartphone in our pocket, capturing and storing memories has become easier than ever. But, where is the best place to store your digital photos? In this blog post, we’ll look at three popular options – the cloud, external hard drives, and computer storage – to help you find the right digital photo storage solution for your needs. We will also share our preferred methods for storing digital photos as photo organization professionals.

The Cloud

Cloud storage services like Amazon Photos, Google Drive, Dropbox, and iCloud offer the convenience of accessing your photos from anywhere with an internet connection.

Automatic backups ensure that your photos are safe even if your device is lost or damaged.

Enhanced security features, such as encryption and two-factor authentication, provide a layer of protection against unauthorized access.

Subscription plans may be necessary for larger storage needs, so consider the cost implications.

External Hard Drive:

External hard drives provide a physical backup solution, offering a tangible sense of security.

One-time purchase cost with no recurring subscription fees, making it a cost-effective option for large storage capacities.

Transfer speeds are often faster than uploading to the cloud, making it suitable for users with massive photo libraries.

Susceptible to physical damage or loss, so it’s crucial to keep the drive in a safe place and consider additional backups for added security.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="935" src="https://jennymasonphotography.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/SSD-1-1024x935.jpg" alt="Storing Your Digital Photos on an External Hard Drive

Here’s a link to our favorite Solid State External Hard Drive: https://amzn.to/49eijbS

On Your Computer:

Storing photos directly on your computer’s hard drive is a convenient and readily available option.

May be suitable for users with smaller photo collections or those who don’t want to rely on external services.

Limited storage capacity, which may lead to the need for periodic cleanup or the use of additional storage solutions.

Prone to risks such as hardware failure or loss, emphasizing the importance of regular backups.

How do you choose a storage solution?

Before deciding on a storage solution, consider these factors:

Storage Needs: How many photos do you have and how much storage space do you need?

Accessibility: How frequently do you need to access your photos and from which devices?

Budget: Consider the cost of storage solutions, including subscription fees for cloud services and the upfront cost of external hard drives.

Security: Evaluate the security features provided by each option to keep your memories safe.

We recommend the 3-2-1 storage method for storing your photos. We follow this industry standard by having our photos saved in three separate locations. Our preference is having one copy of our organized photo library stored in Amazon Photos, and two in separate external hard drives (or one on an external hard drive, and two copies in separate cloud locations). We prefer not to use our computer – to keep our it from being bogged down with our large photo libraries.

In the end, the ideal storage solution for your digital photos depends on your unique needs and preferences. The key is to be sure that your precious digital photos are secure and backed up in more than one location to ensure that they are safe and available no matter what life throws at you.

This is not the kind of post I like to write (I don’t like to toot my own horn LOL), but becoming a 2021 Diamond Photographer of the Year and earning my Master of Photography degree are probably the most important achievements of my professional career and truly deserve a spot here. So here goes!

Last year I made the commitment to myself to enter PPA’s (Professional Photographers of America) International Print Competition. It is a requirement to enter and score high to receive your Master of Photography degree from PPA. I have entered two other times over the years and was close to having enough merits (images that score high enough) to get my degree.

It is a major time commitment and a labor of love to enter images into print competition. Here’s what it involved: Creative brainstorming to have a vision of what you want your final images to be. Shooting the images that I had in my head – finding models, clothing, and props to meet my vision for the images. And pouring through my portfolio of work looking for other images that meet all of the 12 Elements of a Merit Image – Impact, Technical Excellence, Creativity, Style, Composition, Presentation, Color Balance, Center of Interest, Lighting, Subject Matter, Technique, and Story Telling. Then there is the painstaking process of retouching, digital painting and perfecting the images. This whole process took many months.

Then submitting images, waiting for the competition, and hanging on pins and needles as the images go by and the jurors score them, sometimes commenting and debating your score. It’s a very stressful and humbling experience to say the least.

Well…I was absolutely honored and SHOCKED when ALL of my images, not only merited at District Competition, but were also chosen for the prestigious Imaging Excellence Collection. Out of 5,000 total submitted entries, all four of my entries were selected as the best of the best. They were recently on display at the Imaging USA convention which is one of the largest annual conventions for professional photographers in the world. They will also all be published in PPA’s “Excellence Collection” book this year.

The level of the award is determined by how many of my four images receive the highest possible honor: acceptance into the PPA Imaging Excellence collection. I was named a Diamond Medalist, meaning that ALL FOUR of my merited images entered the Imaging Excellence Collection – in 2021 there were only 58 Diamond Photographer of the Year in the world!

The best part was, not only did I receive Diamond Photographer of the Year, I received exactly enough merits to also receive my Master of Photography degree from PPA. After 17 years in this industry I am so honored to carry this distinction and am so grateful for all of the people who have mentored me, guided me, and buoyed me up when I didn’t think I could go on any longer. My amazing sister, Julia Kelleher (jewel-images.com), my personal motivational genius with whom I have spent countless hours analyzing our businesses together, brainstorming new ideas, lifting each other up and constantly pushing each other forward. She is always encouraging me to be better and to think BIG for which I will forever be grateful. Michelle Parsley (elevateyourart.com), who’s incredible artistic talent inspired me, and who taught me the art of digital painting and the ins-and-outs of print competition. Beth Brinston (brinstonandco.com), who’s insane work ethic, beautiful images, and fierce determination to create kept me motivated to compete. And Lori Nordstrom, Allison Rodgers, Allison Tyler Jones, and countless other women photographers along the way who have quietly set an example of excellence, grit, and determination to keep me going in this crazy industry that I love so much. My sweet husband and kids who put up with my photography obsession and always offer their undying support of my work. And finally, my dad, who put the first camera in my hand, spent countless hours with me in our home darkroom, is the best advice giver I know, and has always been my number one cheerleader. I can never thank you all enough!

Here are my winning images:
