But I'm about to enter into a flurry of a travel period, with Christmas following, so I wanted to make sure there was something new here before I took off. It's always hard to tell when I'll be back to feed this hungry little corner of the web! :D

So.... meet Christine and Des :) They are going to be married really soon so I thought I'd post up their gorgeous little engagement session we did on a gloriously sunny and beautiful Sydney afternoon by the sandy waters. There is just something delightful about feeling the sand trickle in between your toes, and watching the sun slowly set past the watery horizon. And to be able to photograph a fantabulous couple on top of that is just a cherry on top of an already perfect cake :)

Enjoy my favourites from their session!

hands up if you think Christine is going to make a stunning bride? :D

this is what you're supposed to do at beaches. You know, the kind where no matter how much fuel you are pumping into the system to run full throttle ahead, the wheels tend to stumble across some nail or stone to set you back a few steps. A few steps forward, a couple of steps back. A few steps forward, another couple of steps back. It felt like an eon and a century went by before I even felt I was in the 'drive' mode instead of reverse gear. You see, I'm a meticulously organized person. I love checklists, plans, tables, charts, and I like seeing ticks on all of them.... quick ticks at that. So when plans get stalled or I have my 2 hands dipped in 8 pots at once, my brain runs crying into its la-la-land, and I end up feeling like I am literally running in circles. I promise I don't exaggerate.

Anyhow, in the midst of all that insanity, and in my manic inbox world, in comes this delightful email :) I love emails these days that are completely about hellos, how are yous, and here is something nice for you. This email was exactly like that. A past bride of mine wrote to me telling me she had decided to write a feature about little old me! I was like - really? serious? That is SO NICE! :D nobody does things these days just because, so I was really touched by the gesture. If you are ever reading this, THANK YOU for bringing a smile to my day :)

You guys should check out her site - its great for brides to be. FULL of fantastic tips, ideas, and the like. The link is here: http://myweddingplanningtips.com/

Anyhow, you can read the full feature by clicking the picture below :) For those who are lazy to press that mouse button, you can just read the copy and pasted feature below it.

Some people have the amazing way of lighting up every room they walk into with their smile and personality. Jenny Sun is one such person and in her case, her light and sunny nature shines from each and every one of her gorgeous photos. I first saw her photographs when I was looking for my own wedding photographer and was completely bowled over by the intensity and colour I could see in every photo she had. It just radiated with such love and happiness I couldn’t wait to snap her up for my own wedding!

Brides who have found her would surely be tempted to keep her a secret as her calendar gets booked up so quickly! However, as all good things should be shared, read below to learn more about this young but incredibly talented wedding photographer and see some of her fabulous work.

The first thing that struck me when I first saw Jenny Sun’s photos was the way her photos were filled with happy light, laughter and colour. It was a wonderful and refreshing contrast from the photojournalistic style of photography some wedding photographers were starting to adopt. Jenny’s photos are casual and off-beat but beautifully capture the tender moments between a couple, the evocative look of love shining in their eyes, the mischievous glint as they are silly in front of her camera and the no-holds-barred laughter at the joy they share. It was from her that I first learnt how beautifully light can be captured in a photograph and the beauty of her famous flare shots I fell in love from the start. Her flare shots have become her signature item and it never ceases to amaze me how this talented lady sees and portrays light in her photos.

Jenny’s bubbly personality puts almost anyone at ease and brings out the best in them. Photography sessions with her are always fun and almost too short as she jokes to encourage laughter from even the most serious clients! She absolutely loves clients who treat their photography sessions as a fun rather than a state affair and be warned as you will be constantly laughing and smiling throughout your shoot with her! With Jenny, be prepared to do something different during your shoot – climb a tree, climb a rickety staircase or be simply goofy and with her magical touch, you can be sure she will turn those moments into unique photographs you will cherish forever! I know we will always look back on our own photoshoot with lots of fond memories!

This petite lady shoots mainly in both Australia and Malaysia and her eye for detail and love for colour is what made J and I fall in love with her photographs and what sets her apart from other photographers. In true JSP style, her photographs are always full of vibrance, the tiny little details that makes every wedding perfect and most of all, the tender love and emotion shining in the couple’s eyes. All the little things that make up every perfect wedding!

Have a gorgeous day ahead people! :D

Stay updated with Jenny Sun Photography's Blog, by subscribing to our RSS feed!

Same Day Edit Slideshows: Alice and Chee Wee

I know alot of you have asked why haven't I posted up any weddings that we've been shooting in Malaysia and simply put - I just don't have the time - YET :( We're trying our best to post as much as we can (there are just SO many shoots with so many fabulous couples!), while remaining dedicated to the other very very important things that go on at JSP, so do bear with us. They will come up at some stage, but for now, this post is for all of you who have asked. We definitely have NOT abandoned the Malaysian wedding scene! :)

Now, this was one CRAZY wedding!! :D

On saturday, I shot what I'd pen down as a photographer's wedding. Not that I knew that when walking into it :) There I was happily snapping away and doing my job, not knowing that I was literally surrounded by the largest get together of photographers at a wedding I've ever seen. I later found out that Alice is a budding snapper herself and part of a lovely (not to mention BIG) photography community in KL. So there I stood, gulping in nervousness when that fact dropped into my ears. There is always a double-edged sword when shooting a session for a photographer - its a huge honor, but then there is also the IMMENSELY HUGE added pressure as well!!

I have to admit, I was pretty scared! haha :) but this wedding proved to be fun, hilarious, energetic, and heartwarming.

Below are a couple of my favourite shots from the day....

And here is their same day edit slideshow for their indoor solemnization ceremony at Renaissance Hotel KL, and the traditional chinese wedding games that were held during the first part of the day :) For those wondering what Same Day Edits are, they are slideshows done and edited ON the same day as your wedding while you are having your wedding, and then played at your wedding dinner reception for your guests to have a look at :)

To see their dinner photos, you'll just have to check back another time! Here are some sneak peeks from the dinner and their same day edit slideshow :)

Note: for those on slower connections, press PLAY. I have to admit, they haven’t been easy. These last few weeks, work has been on my schedule every day. No, really. When I wasn’t shooting, I was meeting people. When I wasn’t doing that, I would be editing. When I wasn’t editing, I would be replying emails. And when I wasn’t doing that, I was trying to play out the other roles that I embodied in life – wife, friend, family member. And being sick in between it all. There were moments while I was sitting in front of my computer, doing so many things at once, that I realized I had stopped breathing for a few seconds. Literally. I had to consciously tell myself in those moments - stop, breathe. And breathe again.

A few nights ago, Ju and I were doing grocery shopping (he was wanting to find some german beer to appease his nostalgic love for what he discovered in Frankfurt recently, and I was on the hunt for organic food that I could eat for lunch - no more takeout!!), and he picked up a tiny little potplant that had black seeds sitting on its leaves, saying to me "Jen, I think you should get this for your office room".

In protest, I said "no way! that thing has disgusting black things on it and it looks like they will hatch into gross little insects that will infest my workspace!" (okay, so they were seeds, not eggs :P)

"No it won't!"

This banter happened several times before he remarked "look!", pointing to the tag that came with the little green shrub. It said something along the lines of:

This plant helps to purify the air around you. Add a few teaspoons of water each day.

I thought that's cool! A plant that helps me breathe better. And in that instant, I took the tiny little thing home with me. It adds a little life to this manic corner of my world.

I think we as photographers, especially in peak season when everything runs around you like a wild tornado, when you love your work and the people you work for, we run the risk of sometimes letting work becoming our life. And the line defining and dividing the two become very blur. And well, life just sits there on a lonely shelf wondering when it can come out to play again. I see alot of my industry friends saying to me how busy they are, how tired they are, how much they have to do, the constant and persistent late nights they have to put in, and sometimes it makes me sad because of how much of their life revolves around their work. I am sometimes tempted to tell them to stop, breathe and to live life a little. We're only young once. Every day we don't spend with our loved ones, is one day less. What if it is the last? What if our kids grow up, or our friends have grown into life, and we realize we have missed most of it? I'm a firm firm believer that a balanced photographer, makes a better one. No one thinks their best when they are tired and burnt out, right? ;) And I believe if you are living and loving life, and nurturing the relationships around you, it will show in the pictures you take :) Passion and love can't be hidden :)

So now, the green little shrub doesn't just help to clean the air in my always stuffy office (I don't like opening the windows - its a habit I've taken across with me into adulthood from young when my mum would keep the windows closed to prevent dust from coming in. Nowadays, I'm just lazy :P), but it is there to remind me to breathe every now and again. To take time out, PLAN TIME OFF, spend time living life every now and again, and remember that there are more important things than the work we do and the pictures we take. From the very small to the very big.

To end with, I want to share with you an incredibly beautiful song I found recently by Kyler England: You Wait For Rain It made my heart and ears very happy :)

ps: to anyone who knows what this plant is called, please tell me! I'd love to know!! :D

Stay updated with Jenny Sun Photography's Blog, by subscribing to our RSS feed!

Adeline and Chuen Hau: Engagement

This engagement session has a funny story behind it. Ok, not really, but there were quite a number of things about this shoot that left the oh-so-memorable mark on my heart. You see, the day was raining. And not just your average, lets sprinkle and spit a little onto the land kind of rain. It was lets see if we can flood the country kind of rain - from the start of the morning, right up until about 5 minutes before the shoot began, it was POURING. POURING until visibility was so poor, I could barely see while driving to our first location.

We were just about to reach the first place, and had to drive through a tunnel to get there. It was still BUCKETING down like crazy, and I was so nervous. Thinking "how am I going to shoot in this kind of condition??" all the way through, while anxiously tapping my fingers along the weathered black steering wheel. Then as we exited the tunnel, something amazing happened.

There was sun. In all its gloriousness, flickering its rays down on us. It was clear! I was amazed that in the span of 2 minutes, between one end of the tunnel to the next, the weather was completely different! And what greeted me after were gorgeous smiles, perfect laughs, and an exuberance of fun with these two. I loved their spirit and I am SO glad they braved and risked with the weather, despite everything. Adeline and Chuen Hau, you two are amazing :)

Anyhow, here are my favourites from their session. Mind you, when I walked into the door of their place, I saw lying there a slew of Nikon cameras and lenses. These two are serious photographers! I do mean that! Especially when they were showing me photos they loved by the ever fabulous Ben Chrisman (who is one of my favourite photographers)! talk about pressure! haha :)

I seriously LOVE how these two so uninhibitedly laugh with one another.

No wonder we got such good weather that day. I truly believe you can never have a bad day if you are wearing fabulous shoes. And BRIGHTLY COLORED at that!

Something different.

These next two are some of my favourite frames :) Give me emotion over art anyday *winks* :)

These two introduced to me what is called a Banoffee Pie - YUMMNESS!

Off to do something urban.

These two can rock out a pose and a look!

Especially Adeline :)

Chuen Hau, you're not too bad yourself! haha :)

And then, here is the bonus of working straight after the rain - you get clear beautiful skies. And amazing light :) Who said shooting next to a barbed wire fence would be boring!!?!

I love the following two frames of the two.

I don't know why, but Chuen Hau picked up Adeline at this point and just started goofing around!! haha

Isn't this light incredible? This is practically straight out of the camera. Promise! I swear! :D

Then when it got too dark to play, Chuen Hau suggested the most fun idea! we got to play with his car! I love it when clients bring their fabulous ideas to the table!! It set up a very big challenge as I don't normally shoot night shots, but this was a really pleasant surprise. Thank you for pushing me and letting me play with something new!!

This last frame is probably my fave. Its so subtle.

And here is their slideshow to a new song I love, and a tonne of other pis!

Have a gorgeous wednesday everyone! :D

Stay updated with Jenny Sun Photography's Blog, by subscribing to our RSS feed!

Reminders are Good

It's a proverbial human habit.

We take things for granted. We forget.

I know I have. I stumbled upon an old entry in my personal blog last night, and I just realized I'm just like everyone else. I take things for granted. I forget. Of all the times I have complained that my inbox is crazy, I take it back. After what I unearthed yesterday, I'm praying God will help me be more thankful. More appreciative. And remember more often that I have been blessed beyond imagination. To stand where I am standing today, is an incredible measure of fortune, and one I know I don't deserve.

I wanted to post this excerpt (from the time when I was JUST about to become fulltime awhile ago) below as a reminder to myself that not that long ago, I came from very very very humble beginnings. And to never lose that passion or spark that gets us all going in the first place. To all those who are crying out too busy! too much work! long to do lists! Be thankful that you have work, and that you have to do lists to get through. Because I am sure at one time, you were praying for just that one job. That one email to come through. Or just that one client to pick you. Remember and be thankful for where you are today, and be reminded of all the blessings you have been given. Not what you don't have or what you have 'too much of' :)

Have a beautiful Friday and weekend ahead everyone! xox

EDIT: There's been some confusion for some people. This is just a note that the excerpt below was taken from a very old entry of my personal blog. So to clarify to everyone else out there reading this - I AM fulltime and have been for sometime already! :D

Excerpt from way back then:

It's a monday. As most mondays are, they are relatively dull...everything seems to push forward at sloth-like pace, and like clockwork, nothing seems to change. Today's Monday was no page turner... or so it seemed.

As the email page in front of my weekend-spent eyes decided to do its usual flip of a page, and give itself its regular 10 minute facial makeover, I didn't expect anything new to pop in today. It was, of course, a monday.

To my utmost surprise though, I saw that ever-exciting "(1)" next to the inbox folder, meaning that some wonderful stranger or friend out there had decided to write to me about my photography. My fingers couldnt grab hold of my crimson-coloured logitech mouse fast enough to navigate its way towards that folder... I fumbled in my trademark clumsiness at first, and finally found the destination I was after.

*refresh*

*opens*

RE: NEW CLIENT ENQUIRY

Magic to my eyes :p

I felt like a little child opening up their first-ever christmas present. The glee was almost stupefying. What eventually shook hands with my excitement was a confirmed booking for later in the year. I could have done a cartwheel with all the buzzing energery that was literally flying through my veins in a velocious manner.

I guess none of you who skim through these words will understand the weight of what just happened. You see, I am moving into photography FULL TIME as of next year. At the end of this year, I am quitting my comfortable and stable full time job at present to pursue this dream of mine with full gusto and a 150% dose of commitment. Why? well, I've been getting so many jobs this year (its been 3 or 4 times more than the quota I planned for this year) that I can no longer hold up a full time job and a growing business... so after talking to people, praying, I feel it is about time (Ju corrected my misconception about 'PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHERS' - I thought it was anyone who is getting paid to do jobs, however I have come to be enlightened that Professional photographers are only defined as such when they are making their LIVING from their work solely and nothing else. So I guess I wil officially be dubbed that strange title as of next year? Ju says I am only semi-pro now - *sigh*!!).

Of my decision? I'm petrified. Wobbling-knees, clattering-teeth-together kind of petrified. But I'm clinging onto God in all this, as I cannot ignore the growing and burning desire in me to really give this 'pipedream' my all, and hoping that following my gut this time while trusting with all that I have in God will somehow bloom into something wonderful. What? I cannot say as I do not know, but it is a warm and hopeful trust - one with litte doubt to taint its brilliant glow - because I've learned that He always is looking out for me... proving that He provides JUST what I need, at JUST the right time, at JUST the right place. And if it all decides to unravel, then I believe He just has something better for me in mind. And, I know that will be okay.

Thank you Lord for allowing me to be part of the way towards this hope of mine!!! And I thank God that Ju supports my offbeat and unorthodox dream all the way - even my crazy whim to jetset myself all the way to the USA just to get the training I've been craving for.

Anyone wanna come with me? :)
And just so this post isn't photo naked, here is a tiny snippet of a teaser of a shoot that will be up on the blog next week! :D

Stay updated with Jenny Sun Photography's Blog, by subscribing to our RSS feed!

Travel Destination: Hanoi, Vietnam

I'm supposed to be editing, but my mind is wandering. So instead of procrastinating and doing something completely unfruitful, I thought I'd do what comes therapeutically to me - blogging.

There have been some of you who have told me I should never stop writing my personal blog posts. It sparked somewhat of a strange flicker inside me because I thought - why would any one of you be interested in me? I consider myself one of the most boring, unexciting, and plain type of personalities out there ever. Some days I can't even keep myself entertained, how could I possibly light up the eyes and minds of all of you who visit this little corner of the web.

Co-incidentally, I miss writing. You know, the kind of writing for the sake of writing... little drops of the soul, of the mind, in the form of written smiles, tears, contemplations... So, I promise I won't stop. Me in all its forms will paint their faces across this blog in some way or another in between all the pictures...

And it all starts with a step.

The husband and I recently decided to pack our bags and getaway. I usually take 1 weekend off every month, so I can recharge, stay grounded and keep as far away from burnout as possible during peak season. It can do that to you, you know? Peak season - drive you crazy, that is. We aren't built to be superhumans. We're mortals who all need rest, sleep, and downtime. I'm not perfect at the whole balance game yet, but I am learning, trying, bettering each time around. Because ultimately, I believe that a balanced photographer is a more creative photographer. Who thinks best when they are worn out and tired right? So I plan breaks. Time off. It's almost as necessary as the air we breathe in my opinion. Don't believe me? Keep working your little behind off, then burn out, and then come back to me :)

Hanoi was a complete spur of the moment thing. Peak season in all its insanity, was rearing its ugly head one day, and I had just about wanted to throw a book at it. Instead, I sporadically hopped online and bought two tickets to go away. Just like that. It took just 10 minutes, and we were one step closer to our pho, bike infested adventure! For some reason, I'm not usually a big fan of travelling to asian countries for holidays, but Hanoi was a complete delight and it didn't disappoint - hanoi in all its dilapidated claustrophobic manic beauty was perfect for our quickie getaway! We had beef pho every day, and then some, and laced in between it all were flavours of sweet, bitter, tangy delectably intertwined together.

Here are some photos from our trip! :) For some reason, I saw the whole city in B&W and vintage. Yeah, you may think I'm really weird, but I actually see my final shot before I actually take it :)

Vietnamese Elixir.
Okay, so its their coffee, but day-um!! this stuff is amazing!! I love it more than my espresso stuff! :D It was my 2nd fave drink of the trip. My favourite was this delightful drink comprised of all these tropical fresh fruits, in condensed milk, with crushed iced mixed it. Result = TROPICAL FRUIT HEAVEN!!

Apparently this is how people cut their hair in vietnam. What salons? ;)

The city is FULL of bikes. Nobody seems to drive, or follow the traffic light system for that matter. So how does one cross the road? Step onto the road, close your eyes, and just move forward. They will drive around you. Crazy I tell you!!! And I thought KL's road system was nuts!

I don't know why but i love the following photo - it sums up Hanoi in all its claustrophobic charm. Wires, bikes, and all. I love wide open spaces, and it made me appreciate Australia so much more :)

Old little things for sale, were everywhere.

And here is the Beef Pho - best eaten on the streets!

This is how we ate pretty much every night - on the streets, on tiny little plastic stools. The best food was found in corners like this one.

I realized that people work really really hard in Hanoi. They worked right til late into the night. I guess you'd have to when the average pay here per day is $2USD. I didn't realize when I tipped the bag boy $1, I was giving him half a day's earnings :)

The picturesque Ha Long Bay.

And some photos of us. Me pretending to be Miss prim and proper, Ju caught with a mouthful and in the SAME travel shirt he always SEEMS to travel with! I promise you people, Ju does own other shirts!

We met some delightful crazy fellow Aussies on the trip! They were pure funny, and we had the loveliest time hanging with them during the day! :D Here is one of them fooling around again... ahaha.. this was not a rare occurence during the trip!

Last shot of the trip.

Have a gorgeous thursday everyone!! :D

Stay updated with Jenny Sun Photography's Blog, by subscribing to our RSS feed!

Kevin and Valen: Engagement

These two have seriously left a footprint in my heart. I think from the moment her exuberance in peals of laughter ushered into my door, and the doting way his eyes would linger in happiness at her and hold her hand protectively like he was holding a sacred treasure, I knew. I just knew they were perfect. There is just something magical and solid about a first true love. It hits you like a lightning force, and then settles like the roots of a very old tree, they stem, intertwine, and delve deep under. Deep deep under. It is almost impossible to unearth no matter what the storms, the trials and tribulations, distances, or adversities it weathers.

Even after years past their first brief encounter with each other in high school, when fate had toyed with them, letting them pass each other by year after year, something about her face had imprinted itself in his mind. Something memorable. Something enduring. So much so that when life would have it, and the doors opened once more for these two, Kevin without hesitation put himself on a plane and flew from across the other side of the world, across continents to let her know he was hers. This time and always. In his words, Kevin said from the moment he held her hand, he knew she was IT. The one. And considers himself the luckiest guy in the world to be able to marry this girl and spend the rest of his life with her.

There is something magical about a first true love. It hits you, stays, and then flourishes like an indelible force.

Kevin and Valen, thank you SO much for letting me document your love! You are everything I could hope for in a client - fun, energetic, vivacious, creative, complete trust in me, and gorgeous inside and out! You both have beautiful souls and I can't wait to do this all over again with you when I hit LA!! Have a gorgeous wedding ahead - I'm so sorry I can't shoot it, but I promise when we hang together next year it will make up for it!! :D

Here are my favourites from their session:

(ps: shoutout has to go to the awesome awesome team from Pretty In White, who provided the gown, and hairpieces - they all went perfectly!!)

Here marks the start of day 2 of shooting - since the first day rained out in the middle!

This, I swear, has to be one of my favourite portraits of a bride of mine :) Its totally candid, raw, and unabashedly joyful. None of that arty fartyness hung over in it. Its true beauty in the form of happiness.

Since we had an INCREDIBLY long veil (say, 6m??), I couldn't help myself but do some dramatic veil shots, since the weather was nice and dry for it! :D

There's that exuberant laugh from Valen again!

I love it when my couples laugh like this :) It makes my day - so boys and girls, don't hold back on your laughter!! It's so beautiful!

The day ended with some pretty light! :D

And because we haven't had a slideshow on the blog for awhile, here is their slideshow to a song I just absolutely adore by an artist who has become penned as one of my enduring favourites :) For smooth viewing on slower connections, please press PLAY, then when the progress bar loads, press PAUSE. Once the bar is fully loaded, press play for a better visual experience! :D

Much love!! xx

Stay updated with Jenny Sun Photography's Blog, by subscribing to our RSS feed!

Revisiting the Past

I was in conversation yesterday, and it made me realize that I haven't done what I love doing for a long time... that is, blog. And I'm not talking about blogging wedding photos, and the like. But just blogging, for the sake of blogging. Talking about life, what makes me laugh, cry, contemplate... You know, all the the things that make me...well, me.

So I thought today, since the internet is just CRAWLING (I can't get any slideshows or photos to load to my FTP, I thought it would be nice to steal a little away from the wedding scene and visit two things that I love almost as much as taking pretty pictures :)

(1) Music, and (2) Writing

The first is an old vocal recording I did of myself in 2004 when I JUST started taking vocal classes. I recorded it for the sole purpose of wanting to be able to look back and see how I had progressed vocally. I still sing to this day, so my voice has grown 5 years and sounds quite different from what you hear below, but its quite funny to hear! Mainly because I sound different now, and secondly because I didn't have any proper recording equipment back then (still don't actually haha!!) - the crackles and distortions in the higher notes are just awful! But hey, its good for laughs :)

For those on RSS feed and reading this, you can hear it here: [LINK]

And the 2nd... writing... while time is too scare to delve into this little field of creativity right now, I was looking through old things yesterday and found some snippets of poetry, lyrics, and the like which I used to frequently pen down. Here is one of them that I wrote :)

Your heart is filled with pain,
Your mind cluttered with confusion.
Pieces of your life fall around you
Like raindrops in a storm.
The path you chose so long ago
Led you straight to hurt's door.
Now your weary feet struggle
To find the road back home,
Searching for the places
That love and beauty hide.
Temptations lie in wait all around,
Pulling at your every step,
Waiting for you to slide back
From the chosen, sought for, path.
Emptiness surrounds you,
Confusing your perceptions.

It is difficult to carry on.
I will do my best to fill your heart with joy,
To clear the cobwebs of confusion,
Help you find your purpose.
I'm good at catching pieces
And I can chase away a storm.
Let me walk your path beside you,
I've walked this road before.
You can lean on me when the weariness comes.
My shoulders are very strong.

I can't fight your battles,
Or chase away demons of the soul,
But I can lend you my strength
Until you find your own.
I will help you find the courage
To face each day anew.
I can't shorten the journey you must make,
The road is just as long as before.
But I can fill the emptiness
And help you reach your center,
The place where love and beauty hide.
Take my hand, be my friend,
Let me walk with you awhile.

Anyhow, I really need to run. I have a million things to look after today, people to chase, and a plane to catch so I hope to be back with some more personal musings and pretty pictures :) Hope you found this little tinker down memory lane as funny as I did!

Have a glorious day ahead! :)

xx

Stay updated with Jenny Sun Photography's Blog, by subscribing to our RSS feed!

Hunter Valley Wedding: Josh and Grace

I love the Hunter Valley region. For years. Ever since that very first day trip that my husband and I took all those years back as university students, I was just head over heels smitten with the place. The lush rolling green hills, with imprinted lines of vines meandering through the landscape. The wafting scent of violet grapes. The tingling warmth of the sun that settled so comfortably on the skin. The place has always had a very soft place in my heart - so much so that my husband and I returned every year we could so we could catch the wine season. And on top of that, we came back another time to celebrate our first day together as husband and wife :)

So it comes as no surprise when Josh and Grace came knocking on my inbox door, and told me they were getting married in one of my favourite places ever, I was extremely excited! Even as the ominous grey clouds swirled over the ceremony that day, threatening to unleash its storming contents below, nothing could dampen the spirits of the intimate wedding that celebrated Josh and Grace's love :)

Here are my favourites of the day! Get ready, this is a monster post, to make up for the lack of updates while I've been on the mend from tonsilitis :)
I absolutely LOVED the gown, that Grace chose for her wedding day. It was so feminine, soft, and vintage in feel. The detailing on it was subtle, but gorgeous!

I know its weird, but I found that Grace's silhouette in the background was interesting in this photo.

Fascinators are the best! :D

Grace's attention to the details at this wedding was just sublime! It went along with this vintage theme she had for her big day, and I swear, it was one of the most well themed weddings I've seen for someone who did it all by herself! :D

Just before the ceremony, at Peppers Convent Estate.

haha! I've been WAITING for ages for a groom that would be wearing a funky tie and socks!! :D I was delightfully surprised when I saw this! :D

I don't normally post down the isle shots, but this little girl was so incredibly adorable!! Her smile could almost radiate the silly grey weather we had all day!

And even though it was gloomy all the way through, weather wise, you could just tell that the bride and groom didn't let that stop them from having the best time at their wedding :)

Look carefully and you'll see their cute little 'confetti balls' as I'd like to call them hehe :)

What is a Hunter Valley wedding without enjoying some yummy bubbly right?

here are more of those gorgeous details that Grace made/prepared. Including an awesome wedding favour from T2!! (which I got to take home, yay! :D)

The speeches were full of laughter....

Tears....

kisses....

And hugs... :) Its why I love small intimate weddings with only the people that matter. The photos also become that much more personal, and intimate.

Sneaking off to get some pictures before the light disappeared that day! There were no vines out yet, so we played in the gardens instead :)

Then back to dance the day away :)

Much love! :)

Stay updated with Jenny Sun Photography's Blog, by subscribing to our RSS feed!

Destination Shoots: USA

Yay! I have to admit, its a fond topic of mine. In my personal blog, I used to write consistently, persistently, on matters of the heart - what fascinated me, what hurt me, what enlightened me, and what humoured me about love. I stopped after awhile, because I kinda grew up and time felt pinched.

But these days, I get to write about it and think about it as part of what I do - something I consider to be an incredible blessing. Each and every couple I meet, throws a new coin into the thought-pool of contemplations I have about this great and beautiful enigma, allowing me to remember or learn or appreciate another layer about it.

Like this quote for instance. I love it because it's so true. "You ever heard the expression 'The best things in live are free.' Well that expression is true.' Every once in a while, people step up. They rise above themselves. Sometimes they surprise you, and sometimes they fall short. Life is funny sometimes. It can push pretty hard but if you look close enough, you can find hope in the words of children, in the bars of song, and in the eyes of someone you love. And if you're lucky, if you're the luckiest person on this entire planet, the person you love decides to love you back."

Sometimes when I am shooting, I see that delight in my couple's eyes. It's like this intangible glisten that just radiates. They know they've lucked out with one another. It really is a beautiful thing and I find it a complete joy to be able to capture in a frame. So when bubbles floated and gracefully danced higher and higher, illuminated by the honey golden rays that were permeating the air that day. Each carried a reflection..an almost frozen moment in time. I saw giggles, joy, and love in each circular shiny frame - they mirrored that delight.

Meet Stuart and My-Linh :)

Awesome couples bring the coolest little play things to our shoots :)

We chanced out and got the most gorgeous light to bask under that day.

I love the next two shots, because it reminded me so much of a show called Dawson's Creek that I loved watching as I grew up.

I have to admit, I haven't visited this charming pink little house in awhile, mainly because it is so overused by photographers these days, but when Stuart asked for it, I decided it would be fun to challenge myself to get something a little different with it :)

I love creative shots. The below isn't one. But I realized after talking to a photographer friend that beauty supercedes creativity almost all the time. And sometimes, beauty can be found in the simple. A smile, a raw burst of laughter. I truly believe when people are at their happiest, they are the most beautiful :) And it shows in photos :) Even the simple ones like below.

Thank you Stuart and My-Linh for your enthusiasm! I had an amazingly fantastic time having you both in front of my frame that day. Round 2 coming up!! And I can't wait to see you both again soon for it :D

Hope you all have a fabulous week ahead everyone!!

Stay updated with Jenny Sun Photography's Blog, by subscribing to our RSS feed!

Amy and Champs: Wedding

Weddings posts are LOOOOOOONG overdue on this blog! And not because we haven't shot them. Oh my goodness, we've been shooting so many, its been hard keeping up with them on this web space. So what to do when you have so many fabulous couples to share? Start from the beginning :D

Meet Amy and Champs :)
Amy's lovely dress from Elizabeth De Varga.

With the beautiful bouquet from Best Buds. I loved the light coming in the window at this point.

Again, I had to take advantage of the light that was coming in. It was soooo pretty!!

Amy has an adorable little pomeranian! sooo cute!!

The below show was my favourite from the prep session :)

Any while I was doing that, Linda snapped the below shot while Champs was getting ready! :D

Amy and Champs got married at one of my favourite churches in Sydney - St Thomas Anglican. The light is always beautiful and so is the space to shoot in :)

There was this funny little blooper as the rings were being handed up. The little ring bearer was supposed to go up to pass the rings, but I think he ran away instead! haha :) That's the hand of the kid's father you see at the right ;)

And these delightful (and YUMMY!!) little things were done by her FABULOUS friend: Ivy Chung who makes the most beautiful cupcakes for weddings, and any other joyous occasion :D - Anyone wanna get hooked up with Ivy and her delightful creations, just let me know and I'll send her details your way pronto! They're so good you'll wanna munch em up right off this screen! :D

Here's that shy little ring bearer boy :D Sooo cute!

Amy and Champs celebrated their love with a lunch receiption at the Arglye . I love this place. Its like sitting in a wine cellar with all that wooden charm. The cute little favours you see were from: Kardella Kreations and Pink Frosting :)

Also, can I just say how much I LOOOOOVE lunch time receptions? You get fabulous natural light, and your day doesn't end late. I did that for my own wedding and it was the best decision I ever made. It meant I got to hang with my hubby and have that time all to ourselves in the evening to just chill, relax, and walk by the harbour :)

During speeches :)

First dance :) And to a tune I just ADORE - Beyonce's "Ava Maria". If you guys haven't heard this track, you are seriously missing out hearing the Diva belt out a divine controlled power ballad. Just beautiful :)

The little guy got in on the action too! :D

Ring shot. I thought their pretty Tiffany and Co rings, deserved to sit in some other kinds of rock n spices :)

Then off to take advantage of some beautiful light we had that day. You add me + beautiful light = photographer has lots of fun! :D

Some pretty details :) the light was seriously ooh la la !!

I live for moments like this. Again, all shot straight out of camera - there was no editing done except the border, and a couple of b&w conversions.

And Just a quick tidbit: film lends a softer, grainier feel to photos, compared to digital. So pretty please don't start sending me messages saying my style is changing! :) thank youuuu! :D

Have a lovely Wednesday and I'll be back again soon!

xox

Jen

Totally not in focus, but I love it! :D

And a few shots of the lovely scenery that surrounded us on their shoot :)

Stay updated with Jenny Sun Photography's Blog, by subscribing to our RSS feed!

Film: Yvonne and Ash

Hello peeps! Sorry for the lack of presence on this space this week or so, but our server has been misbehaving terribly. But, we're back! At least for the most part :)

Remember these two?

Well, I had a roll of film sitting in my old almost 40 year old film camera, from a few years ago and wanted to finish it up (mainly to see what was on it and to see how good film was compared to digital these days). Anyhow, I had about 10 shots left of this expired roll of canon film...and here are the results. All unedited, straight out of the camera :)

I'm still a huge believer that film is better than digital... the results straight out of camera are just unbelievably good. To get results like this on digital, a fair amount of editing is needed to bring back in the color and contrast.

Anyhow, enjoy my little experiment! it probably won't be the last as I have quite a number of expired rolls to finish up! haha :)

Til next post! :D

xox

Jen

Stay updated with Jenny Sun Photography's Blog, by subscribing to our RSS feed!

SERVER

Hello All!

If you have not yet noticed, you will realize that the photos on my blog are not loading, and you will not be able to access the website or send me emails.

Our server is being moved to another place at present, and as a result, you will not be able to see anything on our sites, or access/send us emails.

If anything is of an urgent matter, please drop me an sms at the signature of the emails I have sent you.

This post will be removed once the server is back up and running in its new spot.

Many thanks for your patience!!

Jenny

**UPDATE: We are able to receive emails (but not send out yet). I cant wait to see!!

Then something more moody.

Then we proceeded to go outside (back to the freezing cold! hehe), to play in my favourite kinda zone :) Isn't nicole stunning? :D

I love the subtlety in this below photo. I sometimes honestly think, less is more :)

We had some seriously amazing light that day. Awful temperatures and insane wind, but beautiful beautiful light.

Then a quick change of attire. It was FREEZING by this point. So cold and bitterly painful on the skin that we had to wrap this up really quickly. I think 20 mins? Nicole was utterly professional and nailed her frames though :)

I really do love how all the chairs were blown over by the wind. It created this lovely random, feel that fitted just perfectly. Total juxtaposition, but I love it!!

Red heels, and any other bright color makes my day!! :D

These last two frames were my favourite :) You all know I love shooting close up :) Its frames like this that remind me why :)

I just realized that sessions like these, are perfect for us girls... you know, to get pretty pictures of ourselves, without having to bother our lovely other halves haha :) What do you all think?

:) Anyway, I have to run and take care of the really fat inbox that has been keeping all your lovely messages for me while I've been travelling :)

Stay updated with Jenny Sun Photography's Blog, by subscribing to our RSS feed!

Leanne: Bridal (With Vibrant Photography!)

To those that know me, know I love fashion/fashion photography... and I love wedding photography. But I have never believed in mixing the two together as I hold a firm belief that wedding photos should reflect the core things that make a marriage, and the mystery of love so beautiful. It's why I love my wedding photos to look happy, natural, and carry forth a sense of real, raw, down to earth love and joy :)

So, when photographer and friend, Jonathan Dear, threw across the idea of doing a session where we could play with bridal and fashion, for the sake of fun and creativity, I was super excited! :) We shot on an unbelievably cold day, where the winds were so strong they were literally swaying my car left and right as I was driving to the location but I the results made me happy regardless :) There were way too many photos from the session to fit into 1 post, so I'm splitting up the set into two blog entries - yay for you guys, cos it means I'll have to post again tomorrow! :D

For now, enjoy the fruits of what happens when photographers get together for the sake of creativity :) Some shots I've purposely left unsharpened for a more film and organic feel :)

Thank you to Pin Me Up Couture, for the gorgeous hairpiece!!, to Margo from Ethix Makeup for the beautiful beautiful work you did on our girls. Thank you Jonathan for letting me play (i love your beautiful 'light enhancers' hahaha :D)! I can't wait til we do this again! :D And for those reading, do check out his blog for more photos and the rest of his work - its really lovely stuff which you are totally missing out on if you don't click his blog link above!! :D
Meet Leanne :)

And here is a sneak peek, to part 2 :) It'll be published on this blog space, tomorrow, so check back then!

Hope you are all doing lovely, during this mid week bump! :D

xox

Stay updated with Jenny Sun Photography's Blog, by subscribing to our RSS feed!

Yvonne and Ash: Engagement

The sun had perched himself in the afternoon sky, gazing over the herds of people that had scattered themselves across the green lawn. Some were laughing, some were running, others were lazily munching on the delectable delights that their mothers had prepared for them. For Yvonne and Ash, they were amongst the few that were walking hand in hand, letting the caramel rays fall softly on their faces. While it was familiar ground for them, nervous giggles filled the air as they were navigating their way through the sprinkled families and children, on a particularly gorgeous day to have their pictures taken.

Here are my favourites from our 1 hour quickie of a session :) Really looking forward to your wedding in a few months! And thank you so much for letting me just do whatever with your shoot! I know some of the spots I picked made me look like a complete nutcase, but I promise they were worth it :) Don't you think? ;)

And these last three frames were my favourite :)

Stay updated with Jenny Sun Photography's Blog, by subscribing to our RSS feed!

Michelle and Kah Fei: Engagement

Some of my favourites from our quick 2 hour session with Michelle and Kah Fei :) They were full of fun, laughter, and fabulousness :) Being budding photographers themselves, it's always a little daunting shooting other photographers - I get scared my photos don't live up! Yet at the same time, its an incredible honor to be chosen :) Thank you both! My camera loved you :)

I LOVE LOVE LOVE michelle's hairpiece... it had the right kind of everything :)

A short burst of light came in from nowhere and I had to play with it :)

Then a quick change of attire and scene :) For those who have been worrying that I'm straying from my style, this is PROOF that its here to stay! :D

We found an old bomb of a car by random chance!

I love this next series of photos. I couldn't decide which processing I liked better, so I did all three! I lean towards the 3rd one though ;)

A bit of cheesy fun to end with :)

Stay updated with Jenny Sun Photography's Blog, by subscribing to our RSS feed!

FYI

I seriously cannot believe two entire weeks have FLOWN by since my last post.

I knew, when penning down the last entry, it would be the last for awhile before peak season settled its sticky feet into my life. And guess what? I was right! You have no idea how insanely crazy the last couple of weeks have been. I don't exaggerate I promise. Last night, I was sitting with a bunch of fellow photographers, explaining the workload I have in the amount of time laid out, and all the flights in between. It wasn't until I was speaking for a very long time, and STILL not having finished my sentence, I realized that I'm officially crazy. Yup. C.R.A.Z.Y.

You see, I haven't been in a single city, for longer than 3 or 4 days. Some stays have been as short as less than 1!

So, this blog space has been really really neglected. And I'm hearing all your messages via email, FB, and Twitter! I am determined to keep this blog alive while I attempt to bulldoze through this year's peak season in one piece :) So in this spirit, and to keep the blogging gods happy while time isn't on my side, as fruit of a discussion I threw out across my twitter and facebook page, I'll be blogging with minimal writing (or at least try to! haha, I know for those that know me its like asking me not to breathe, but hey... a girl can hope!) and filling the space to just let the images do the talking for me as I'm hopping from place to place :)

While I am doing that, you are more likely to find out where I am, whatever I am up to, see sneak peeks, special photo previews, and other visual goodies, if you follow/add me via the following mediums:

(1) Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/jennysunphoto

(2) Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/jennysun

And in the spirit of starting a post with a photo representing new beginnings, here is the first photo I took from my new iPhone today! The view from my balcony, where I was today. Yes, its a phone photo. Not a photo from my 5D SLR :)

Stay updated with Jenny Sun Photography's Blog, by subscribing to our RSS feed!

Sandy and Ronnie: Engagement

The sun softly trickled through the willowing leaves, which moved in graceful pendulating fashion as the cool breeze danced its way in between the suspended green foliage. Floating through the air, in warm echoes was the lilting sound of giggles, doting hugs, and gazes laced with sweet spoonfuls of love.

One may throw down the silly card, and say it's impossible to hear hugs and loving gazes, but I believe love fills and permeates all the senses. So much so, that at times, you cannot tell one sense from another. And its beautiful. Perhaps that's why they say love is so magical.

One gorgeous afternoon, where the golden rays lent themselves to us for a brief moment, Sandy and Ronnie let me document their love and I couldn't be more excited and honored to photograph these two. They were sweet, carefree, cute, relaxed, and most importantly - in love, and not afraid to let it show in their down to earth and fun way! :)

Thank you so much for such an awesome time you two! Words cannot express how happy you made me and my camera with your loveliness!! I can't wait to shoot your wedding!! :)

Here are my favourites from their session! (warning: monster post ahead!)

We started with something a little more dressed up to begin with :)

Sandy's laugh is so infectious!! i laugh everytime i see these photos! :D

Gorgeous.

Then a change of attire and style. I LOVE sandy!! She and I were in conversation before the shoot, and she was telling me she wanted a roman holiday kind of feel to her images. We couldn't get a scooter, but she managed to find this AWESOME vintage bike instead. My clients bring the best stuff to the shoot!! :D I tell you brides, styling (clothes, props, and hair/makeup) in the right way is sooooo important to a shoot! As important as nice light and location. So do talk with me about your shoot! I love styling as much as shooting so lets work together and make your session that much more fabulous!! :D The results are worth it!!

I do, and will always always love close up shots :)

A burst of AMAZING light, in the nice light we already had.

I love the feel of the below photo :)

This is them, in their element. It features one of my FAAAAAVOURITE tracks by one of my now favourite artists, Shannon Curtis. Her music is just gorgeous, so have a listen!! :D
For those on RSS feed, you can check out the slideshow with this link: HERE

Stay updated with Jenny Sun Photography's Blog, by subscribing to our RSS feed!

Our Wedding Photos

Alot of people have asked, where is the wedding photographer's wedding photos?!?! haha... well, they were actually published quite a while back on this blog. But in the spirit of remembering good times and the like, here they are again!

The below is an excerpt I wrote about the day from the original post, followed by the slideshow of images featuring one of my favourite EVER songs. I hope you enjoy looking back at our wedding as much as we did! :D

The alarm shook and then poured out its cacophony of noise pollution, guaranteed to shovel out anyone from the deepest of sleep. Anyone but myself that is. I had slept at 2 that morning, and the clock had begun its audio display at close to 5. My thoughts at that present were only to grasp whatever left of sleep I could before it faded before my eyes. I think God had other plans though, because despite my rather anti-morning persona, I couldn't stay in a state of slumber any further. The buzzing of activity downstairs, chatter, and laughter had floated its way up to my room, and by then I knew... it was time.

The day was glorious to wake up to though. We had perfect weather. After a stretch of wet Saturdays for almost 2 months, the sun handsomely displayed himself across the blue expanse in an almost royal form, while gently radiating only the most gentle rays of warmth to trim off the rest of the picturesque setting before our eyes. Thank God.

I was nervous though, excited, and at the same time just thrilled that after 8 years of courtship, we were closing the chapter on one part of our life, and opening another. Corny? Yes. True? Even more so. People, events, sounds, tastes, and sights sprinted past our minds so fast that day, I felt that even if the wind had carried us on the tails of a shooting star, we would only have paled in the distance to where everything was. And before we knew it, it hit 7pm and the day was over. We were able to cast off our shoes onto the sand coloured carpet, and just look out the window over looking circular quay as dusk was settling in. Lights began flickering on, and shades of purple, pink, and blue were being stirred in with the black that was trickling itself over the scene before our eyes.

The below photo was probably one of my favourite shots throughout the whole entire day :)

To those on RSS feed, you can view the slideshow below by clicking here: [LINK]

Happy Monday!! :D

Stay updated with Jenny Sun Photography's Blog, by subscribing to our RSS feed!

Words of Encouragement

This past week, has been one of considerable trials.

At times, it has been tempting to feel discouraged, let down by others, or made to feel like I am less of a photographer. Words to do hurt, and I hope people realize that.

But as words can cut, on the flip side of the coin, words can also have an amazing healing effect too. One of my beautiful clients (who I am YET to meet!) emailed me this morning, and told me she had written the below blog post about her wedding photographer. And in an instant, I was flooded by encouragement, and warmth by her complete trust and abounding confidence in a girl whom she is yet to see and know face to face! It just reminds me that I really and truly have THE BEST clients out there. THE BEST. No flipping joke. I don't know how they find me, or why they choose me over the amazing talents that exist out there in our industry, and honestly I sometimes think I don't deserve people as amazing as yourselves, but I am so thankful for the relationship I am lucky enough to have with them.

God continues to amaze me, all the time :)

Elizabeth, if you are reading this - thank you, thank you, thank you :) you have such a beautiful heart and I am just ALL THE MORE excited about our time together in a few months!!

And to my husband, thank you for reminding me last night that I have an abundance of blessings to be thankful for. In my busyness, and lightning speed of a lifestyle, alot gets choked out and I sometimes forget. Thank you for pointing me back.

much love.

xoxo

-------

ps: We've had alot of requests for our own wedding photos to be put up here on this blog, so wait for the next post because that's where I'll be putting them up :)

Stay updated with Jenny Sun Photography's Blog, by subscribing to our RSS feed!

Chris and KC: Engagement

I'm addicted to blogging. I really believe I am. It's becoming a chronic illness to the point where I will hyperventilate in waves of anxiety if I feel like my blog has been left standing naked and unfed for periods of more than like....... a day :P

Seriously, I am up to my neck with work, to do lists, and emails at the moment, and here I am, saying to myself, I HAVE to blog. I HAVE TO BLOG. Like I said. A chronic illness. So in the spirit of cleansing the system and getting things out in the air, here is a quickie of a post from me, just so I can continue the rest of my day in peace and sanity :)

Meet Chris and KC. We had the pleasure of having these two in front of our camera one fine overcast day, and look at the little bits of candy they graced us with! Thank you Chris and KC for the total delight of being able to shoot for you :) We hope you are enjoying the wonderful first few stages of marriage together! Blessings :)

Then a change of attire and scenery! :D mmmmm.... Chris was wonderful in finding this location. She knew I loved my colours! I LOVE it when clients pick their own locations. Seriously, it means you get total control over where the shoot happens, and it gives the best opportunity to let the location you pick reflect who YOU are :)

Look at Chris work it!

Off for now to try and cure this blogging disease I have! :)

Stay updated with Jenny Sun Photography's Blog, by subscribing to our RSS feed!
