Style Alert: In the northeast, we haven't seen a lick of snow as of yet. However, we are already looking forward to licking (responsibly) boozy pops this Spring/Summer!

We gave you a little taste-test a while back. See our post on this here. We have also found another website with some inspiration: Lush Pops. Hmmm....would love to see these pops up here on the other side of the world from the Pacific Ocean. I'll contact these folks for you and see what their plan is. Considering that we actually do have snow in the forecast, I may have some more time on my hands to do some research.

The last word on 2012 cocktails for entertaining this year? Rum, rum, rummity rum rum. Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum! Start collecting those rum-runner recipes. Send your favorites this way. We will publish them with a link back to your website.

Redirect: The Surprising New Science of Psychological Change | Timothy D. Wilson

In reviewing Timothy D. Wilson's new book, Redirect: The Surprising New Science of Psychology, I found that it is not a light read; there are dry parts that are very scientific. However, that's what makes this book work. Wilson is not a "pop" psychologist or an enlightened self-appointed guru. He is a real social scientist that is spreading the word about what works.

What works is very important here, especially if you have problems with teenagers and discipline. Wilson outlines popular programs, such as D. A. R. E and Scared Straight, then tells you why we still have problems in our society with drugs and youth violence. These programs, and the others he discusses, don't actually, scientifically work. In fact, they may add to the very problems they are trying to address. What's disturbing, he says, is that popular social programs are not tested scientifically and not very many people are asking why.

Wilson also delves into the self-help industry: why are there so many different books on what will make us happy? Shouldn't there be just a few best-sellers out there? Instead, we spend hundreds of millions a dollars each year on new books that tell us how to think positively and other "secrets," to personal well-being. Add DVDs, courses and personal coaching sessions, and the dollar amount heads well into the billions.

What's the solution here? Redirecting and reframing disturbing memories, self-defeating thoughts and goal-setting, so that we all can become more self-fulfilled. It's more than trendy fluff, though. Wilson provides us with scientifically proven methods to help us reach true change.

Personally Connecting

That's not to say that I don't like connecting with real people, because I do. In addition to all of the social media, I also still send letters, cards and postcards. I still talk on the telephone. I say, "hello," to strangers. I even try to have conversations with service people with whom I am engaged in transactions. That one is more difficult depending on how sullen they are at that particular moment.

Reaching out to people enriches your life. Human beings are among the most social creatures on the planet. We need each other. See what a difference eye contact and saying, "Hello. How are you doing today?" makes.

I used to not try to make conversation with people. I was labeled shy when I was younger and thought that's who I was. I got lazy and withdrawn. People told me I looked sad or mad about something; asking me, "what's wrong with you today?" That would make me even more withdrawn. Then one day I was telling someone that I was shy and he reacted strangely--how can you be shy and in sales?

My in-laws are all very outgoing, friendly people who never meet strangers. Just as a result of being around them, I found myself being drawn into conversations with these strangers. Then I started actually initiating conversations!

The biggest secret I discovered, I'll share with you. If there is someone that you really want or need to talk to and you are not sure what to say, offer to help them with something. Start with asking questions, casually, you don't want to interrogate anyone. Find out what they need and offer to help them. Works like a charm!
