Tinted Moisturizer: a little effort goes a long way

Here's a little demo of how a little effort can go a long way. Daniela's before and after pics show her with my tinted moisturizer only, before her complete makeover using my hydrasheer (magic) full coverage mineral foundation.

In the second pic she's only wearing my primer and tinted moisturizer, which you can see makes a BIG difference in the evenness and smoothness of the skin. This takes about one minute and boom - you're hydrated with even skin and protected from harmful rays outdoors.

The Pros and Cons of Airbrush Makeup

Over the last 16 years of doing makeup I've periodically been asked about airbrush makeup and what the benefits or disadvantages are. First, let me say that I don't offer the service on purpose. I have never found it to be a more effective way to apply or sustain a look, therefore it doesn't seem an ideal solution. Just my opinion! Additionally, it's a higher cost that I would have to charge you. But why?

Below, I have broken down my reasons for not choosing to offer it. I realize some people may love it, and that's ok, too! ;)

*Although it can look nice in photos or TV, it can also settle in fine lines, which is not flattering on the day of your wedding! Also, having a film background I can tell you that unless you have flawless skin, (which most of us don't, including me!) it's going to be hard to get the full coverage you may need without it looking heavy.

*Most airbrushing creates a matte look, but it's not ideal for those who want to look more natural, glowing, or dewey finish.

*Not ideal for oily skin, or humid climates, like Texas. If you touch it or mess it up, you're screwed. Start over. :(

My JQ Makeup brand offers two different types of cosmetics. JQ's Natural and Organics line is naturally sourced, mostly organic, vegan, paraben free and never tested on animals. JQ's Every Woman line still uses high quality ingredients that are (mostly) paraben-free, fragrance free, and hypoallergenic, and NEVER tested on animals, BUT -- it's also more affordable. My goals is to give you options. From my many years of being a makeup artist and licensed esthetician I've learned that one brand or line doesn't always work for everyone. Light Peel Demonstration

Light peels can sound scary when you're a newbie to skin care treatments. All you imagine are medical grade procedures on reality TV where someone looks like something out of a horror film. In reality, that's the furthest thing from the truth. Peels are skin resurfacing treatments that remove dead skin cells so the newer, more youthful looking skin can surface. That's why I made this video a couple of years ago to show you how painless, fast and effective they really are to receive! I like to incorporate light peels into my treatments every chance I get because of the anti-aging benefits! Warning as usual: you may become addicted.

Give your skin a break (you deserve it)

Have you ever looked back at a younger version of yourself and thought about how silly it was that you used to think you had bad hair, (ok, maybe you did) were fat, had imperfections you would gladly now pay for, or perceived your skin as "bad" because of some occasional hormonal breakouts? Sigh.

Me, too.

For most of us, our skin - our largest organ - has been through a lot. Would you be so hard on a friend? Some skin has been through the loss of loved ones, such as parents or children. Some skin has experienced sickness or the kind of heart break that no one should ever know. Some skin has been homeless, and some has had a hard time getting a fair chance at life. Some skin has been malnourished, dehydrated or irreparably damaged. Some skin has been through divorce, or separation, anxiety, neglect, or depression (or all of the above).

At any rate- the commonality of our skin lies within our spirit to prevail as humans, partners, and friends. Your skin is your shell and it tells a story that no one else can replicate, because no one else is you. Every wrinkle and imperfection has been earned by you and that is your beauty and power.

That's pretty special.

Breakouts? How to save money and fight acne

Recently I went to the dermatologist because I've been experiencing more than usual breakouts the last several months. They seem to move all over my face, even forehead - which is usually stress-related in my experience. Throw in some hormonal shifts and not-the-right-products and viola! There's a mess on my face. Sound familiar?

There are a few common acne treatments you may have heard of. To make it easy to understand I'll break down a few most recognized - 1) Retinoids (i.e., Retin-A) is a concentration of vitamin A used to treat acne/aging, 2) Salicylic Acid (i.e., willow bark) is an anti-inflammatory that also kills bacteria, and 3) benzoyl peroxide - dries up blemishes, kills acne.

So now that we have an idea of what does what-- the dermatologist recommended a treatment called Epiduo. If you have insurance with a $15 co pay, no problem. But since many Americans pay cash these days, a cool $500 can be unacceptable. Ouch.

Warning: I am a licensed esthetician, not a doctor, licensed to prescribe medicine. Epidue may not be right for everyone, this is just based on MY experience and meant to help you, if you share a similar experience!

Anyhow -- so what about MY ACNE??????? Not too good of a feeling to not be able to help your face or your kid out, ey??

Since I'm an esthetician, I thought to call the pharmacist to do a little investigating. What could be worth $500, besides getting rid of this frustration? Turns out, this topical medicine is a combination of Retinol and Benzoyl peroxide (mine strength was 2.5%).

So, here's my solution, folks. I don't usually recommend over the counter products much, because they simply don't have the quality and concentration I often look for to help my clients --BUT, in this case, it just makes sense.

Neutrogena sells on-the-spot treatment at your local grocery store (benzoyl peroxide 2.5%) for $5. You can alternate between this and whatever Retinol product you use. If you pay cash for Retin-A at Costco it's around $100. If you don't have a prescription, a couple great alternatives are ZO Skin Health's Advanced Radical Night Repair (retails $170 at dermatology offices) or Skin Medica's Retinol Complex 1.0 for $50 on Amazon. I love both.

Side Note: If you pay cash at the Dermatology office, you can often get a discount, (so ask!!!) unless they don't accept insurance at all.

Here's to hoping this post brings a little relief to your face and pocket book, like mine!! It worked for me and saved me $400.

Makeup! Makeup! Makeup!

Howdy folks!

As of April 1st, I'm making the transition from doing esthetics full time to freelance makeup again!
Just a little background, (if you don't already know)I've been a professional freelancer for about 15
years in the Austin area. Since then, I've obtained my esthetics license from Aveda, and even taught
at the school of botanical and medical esthetics in Denver while I lived in Colorado for two years.
I never get tired of meeting new faces, learning new stories and being a part of someone's special day.

Makeup jobs are not just about makeup to me. It's about being available for my clients and making
sure they know I have their back. I'm not a show up to the party and leave kinda girl, unless that's
what you want. I'm always around for questions or support when it comes to big decisions, referrals,

Sensitive Eyes? Eye Liner & Mascara Basics

Do you have problems with mascara or eye liner hurting your eyes? Usually, it's not an allergic reaction, but the actual flakes from the mascara that cause problems, such as redness and irritability. So, perhaps consider a water proof or tubular mascara, instead.

If your eyes are heavy or you feel irritation from just putting on your mascara, you could have a true allergy, in which case you'll need to omit it completely or find a hypoallergenic line that works for you. A few hypoallergenic lines are Clinique, Physician's Formula, and Almay. Or if you just have a mild sensitivity or gravitate to more natural products in general, you can try an alternative line, like the one I carry. ;)

BUT -- if you're merely experiencing discomfort from the debris, you're in luck. A good water proof mascara may take longer to get off, but you can still have those fancy long lashes you desire in minutes!

In addition, several of my clients have had luck removing their mascara with Coconut oil. In addition addition, some of my clients even use it as a moisturizer. I LOVE me some coconut oil for many reasons, but do be careful around the eye area (and don't forget to wear SPF)!! Stick to the eye BONE area, because if it gets it your eye you'll feel f(eye)rballs! Get it? In addition, addition, addition, it may clog the tiny pores around the eyes and leave you with little white heads. Frown face. So be smart, and hit me up if you have any questions.

Some of my favorite eyeliner and mascara brands are Kat Von D and Stila (Sephora), Loreal and Maybelline (most drug stores), & Cattiva & Rae Cosmetics (Austin locals). Oh, and mine. Now you have PLENTY of options!

Easy to love

My job is easy to love, but my friends, family, and boyfriend are easier to love.

May you always cherish your loved ones and let them know it because life has a funny and consistent way of changing all the time. Practice being grateful and remind those who are in a rut to do the same. Because rest assure, you'll need them to remind you at times, too. We're not perfect beings, we are perfectly imperfect human beings, who have been given this gift of life - this one shot to see the beauty in the world. Hey Hey Hey! So close, yet so far away. My makeup line is ready, but won't actually be available for purchase through me until mid September, then in Austin stores November 1st. I'm excited to announce that I'll have my makeup at a store in the Domain, too, close to Dick's sporting goods... wish I could tell you more now, but details are still top secret.. All I can say is that you'll also want to check it out for its trendy clothing, local accessories, and personal stories (are you curious, yet?). Store details TBA later in October.

Inside the store, we will offer a fully functional beauty bar with professional makeup artists/estheticians and local makeup brands to choose from. It's sure to quench your thirst for all things beauty!

What's preventing you from having healthy skin?

Hi! Over the course of my skincare career I've heard many reasons, much like with a healthy diet, why someone can't come get a skincare treatment they desperately need or desire. I'm here today to address those concerns, and offer you more reasons why/how you CAN make the commitment you need to now that will change your life forever.

EXCUSE ONE: I don't have time.

MY RESPONSE: No one really does. It's all about prioritizing and Making Time for things that matter. Why shouldn't your skincare be right up there with the healthy food you buy/eat? You wouldn't tell yourself, "I'm not going grocery shopping this week, because I just don't have time, so I'll just eat out." You simply make time each week. And if you do subscribe to this unhealthy practice, I can guarantee that your skin's suffering and you're spending twice as much time and money correcting the damage, even if you don't recognize it. Usually, a healthy maintenance program consists of seeing a skincare specialist once a month, unless you're under a specialized treatment plan, equating to one hour a month. Ask about "lunchtime" facials. In many clinics they call them that because it's designed for people with busy schedules. In my studio, I offer mini facials and facial peels that take about 30 minutes, and are very effective treatments.

EXCUSE TWO: I can't afford it.

MY RESPONSE: This may be the case. My husband lost his job earlier this year, and I was once laid off three times in a row, so I get it! However, your skin should not have to suffer. That's why I've created, as many others have, affordable payment plans and discounted programs for loyal customers. ASK about them. Most skin care professionals genuinely want to help you, and will do whatever they can to make it happen. They also know it's much easier for you to maintain what you already have, than to fall behind, neglect your routine and start back from square one.

EXCUSE THREE: I can't afford home care treatments (or) this product is too expensive.

MY RESPONSE: Do you know that most higher end skincare products last 2 or 3X as long as over-the-counter brands? That's because the concentration levels are different. Rather than "sprinkling" your products with some buzz word that sounds familiar and marketing you to death with it, you can usually enjoy more effective home care products that will last 3-6 months longer (some up to a year!) when you buy from a reputable line. If a product costs $50, but last close to 5 months and you LOVE IT, that's $10 a month. Doesn't sound too bad anymore, does it? You probably spend that on products from the grocery store, and just lose count, because you had to buy more when they didn't do what they said they would. I'm not hating on all over-the-counter products, (promise!!) but I would like to communicate the general difference in the value you'll receive when you invest in quality lines vs. (over-the-counter) mainstream.

What a Peel can do for the skin

Skin cells are formed at the Basal layer of the epidermis and travel up to the surface (stratum corneum). By this time, the skin cells are dead. The outer layers of the epidermis are composed entirely of dead cells. When peels are done correctly, they improve the appearance of skin by increasing collagen production, and stimulating cell renewal so the skin can become healthier and stronger.

In my studio, I specialize in light progressive peels that require little to no downtime. It's important to have realistic expectations, however. If you want immediate and dramatic results, you will most likely need a deeper peel from a doctor's office that requires downtime. Lifestyle, honesty, and commitment plays a very important role in the proper healing that's essential in achieving glowing, fresher looking skin.
