The level of exports of furniture from Jepara, continues to decline. The decline is the effects of competition from Vietnam and China furniture. The declining is also as the effect of some internal problems like material cost. The material cost will arise when the fuel price arise but the material cost is hard to down when the fuel price was down. Rising operating costs have eroded Jepara Furniture

competitiveness as compared to other producer countries. Lack of timber is also one aspect in declining Jepara Furniture. Look at this condition, the government should pro-active help the existence of Jepara furniture in all aspects including the Jepara Craftsman.

Beside the internal factors, the decline condition is also as an effect of Global Crisis. The Furniture and other economic sector are going to difficult time. Jepara Torch War

Jepara city, Central Java, was not only famous for its art of carving and furniture. Jepara also has a peculiar ritual tradition. Just look, Tegalsambi Village, District Annual, which has a total area of 153 hectares. Residents south of the small village of Jepara, it is often held ritual named Torch War - at war with baked banana stem. The ritual is believed to be a form of "charity of the earth" or expressions of gratitude of local residents to Almighty God blessing overflow sustenance crops and safety. This ceremony held once a year in the night of Pon Tuesday in month of Dzulhijah.

If the ritual is finished now dwell time to heal burns due to a number of participants affected by a bolt of fire. However, they do not need to worry. The village chief has prepared a special potion that has made. With a little spread, their wounds are lost without a trace. According to some residents from year to year the ritual torch war always go smoothly. In fact, difficult to find a number of participants who seriously injured, let alone rushed to the hospital.

The story began in 16th century. In that era there was a rich farmer who have a lot cattle named “Mbah Kyai Babadan” and his shepherd named “Ki Gemblong. The story said that Ki Gemblong was very diligent in looking after those animals. He bathed them in a river every morning and evening, consequently the cattle grew healthy and fat. Kyai Babadan felt so happy and flattered Ki Gemblong for his diligence and obedience in tacking after the cattle.

One day, Ki Gemblong was looking after cattle in a river side of Kembangan when he saw many fish and shrimps in the river. Without waiting any longer, he caught the fish and shrimps, cooked and ate them in stable.

After that Ki Gemblong caught the fish and shrimps almost everyday. As the result, the buffaloes and cows become weak and sick even death. This condition made Kyai babadan confused. He tried to heal his cattle by magic formulas but it didn’t work.
Kyai Babadan was so angry. Finding Ki Gemblong cooked the fish, Kyai Babadan hit Ki Gemblong with a torch made by coconut palm. Ki Gemblong also took the some torch to face Kyai Babadan.

The torch war finally began. The fire from the torch spread everywhere and burnt up stubble next to the stable. The fire made the buffaloes and cows run away and unexpectedly the sick animals healed even where able to stand upright and ate in the field.

Indonesia has one of the largest furniture export industries in the world. Wooden furniture dominates the furniture sector, accounting for two-thirds of the total furniture exports. Tenun Troso (Troso woven) is originally from Jepara, Tenun Troso industry based in the village Troso since 1935. The name troso is taking from the village name “TROSO” which is located around 15 kilometers to the southeast of the district hall.

Tenun Troso become a tradition in TROSO village, because it starts from one geeration and continue to the next generation.

Many products produced by artisans Troso Weaving. Among silk, prayer mats, sarongs, tablecloths, blanket, and cloth. In Bali, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTB), and Lombok, tenun Troso are very familiar because tenun troso is sending to that city for distribution.

Any type of woven fabric developed from time to time. Initially, Weaving Troso only able to produce a thick woven cloth and rough. This type of weaving is only used for clothing such as scarves tied or girdle but since 1980 Weaving Troso fiber capable of producing fine cloth used as base material making clothes.

Portuguese Fortress is One of Tourism Object in Jepara

The history of Portuguese Fortress started In 1619. This time Sunda Kelapa City was invaded by the Dutch’s VOC. Now Sunda Kelapa which was renamed Batavia was considered at the beginning of colonialism by the Dutch Imperialism in Indonesia. The king of Mataram Sultan Agung has felt the danger threatening the drop of Jayakarta city to the hand of the Dutch.

Ended by the lost of Mataram soldiers.The lost made Sultan Agung thought that VOC can be defeated only through ground and sea attack together, on contrary Mataram did not have a strong sea armada, so they need help from the 3rd party who also against VOC, Portuguese. The deal between Mataram and Portuguese held and for the first step, Portuguese placed his troops in the fortress which was built by Mataram in 1632. This fortress is clearly very effective to watch the sea cruise from Jepara which became Mataram’s main harbor for export and import. But the cooperation between Mataram and Portuguese could not be realized to drive the Dutch out in Batavia, even in 1642 the Portuguese left this fortress because Malacca as Portuguese’s main city East Asia has been snatched away by the Dutch in 1641.

Portuguese fortress is located at Banyumanis village. Geographically this fortress seems strategic for military importance specially in the past which the canon’s range of shooting is only 2 to 3 km. This fortress is built on the top of the rocky hill, besides the beach and right in front of it lies Mondoliko Island, so practically the straits in front of this fortress is under the control of fortress canon and will influence ship’s cruise from Jepara to East Indonesia or the other way.

Kartini Beach as One of Tourist Destination in Jepara

Kartini Beach is located at 2.5 km westward of the hall of Jepara Regency. This tourist object belongs to Bulu village, Jepara Sub-district. Various supporting facilities such as port, a part of Kura-kura aquarium, motel, and children playground are available. In jepara beach especially kartini beach, visitors are able to take a rest by sitting under the gazebo and the breathing the fresh air. Area with 3.5 ha large is strategic area, because it is functioned as sea transportation port toward Karimunjava National Sea Park and Panjang Island.Kartini beach can’t be separated from traditional event called “LOMBAN”.

Actually, Kartini beach is more popular as “PEMANDIAN”. If someone mentions a word “Pemandian”, that he or she thinks Kartini Beach, not the other thinks Kartini Beach, not the other places.

The word “PEMANDIAN” means a place for taking a bath. The place is located on the western park of Kartini Beach. Visitors usually take bath at dosk and down. Kartini Beach area was an island sprouted up with Kelor Plan, so it was know as Kelor Island. At that time, the island was separated from Jepara land.

The Netherland Indies Government lent the island to Encik Lanang for his achievement on a war in Bali. Kartini Beach also used as Encik Lanang graveyard, and always attended by the local fishermen before the Lomban Party.
Besides that, Kartini Beach can’t be separated from RA Kartini’s childhood.

The wood industry in the district of Jepara is not uniformly spatially distributed, but is clustered at different locations and densities, each of which had to be characterised and quantified. At the outset, the position of all industrial or commercial enterprises and workshops that use,process, display, or store wood material, including the smallest family businesses located on even the smallest streets and side roads. Each unit was categorised based on the main economic activity (workshop, showroom, log park, sawmill,warehouse, and ironmonger), and the and the size of the unit (small, medium, and large).

Industry in Jepara comprises a complex network of relationships and flexible subcontracting.

The enterprises of Jepara can be categorized into three groups.

The first consists of integrated enterprises, which produce essentially finished or prefinished products from an input of unprocessed roundwood.
The second group comprises those enterprises (log parks and sawmills)that specialise in initial processing of the raw material to produce simple sawn timber for the third group.
The third group is made up of workshops in which the input comprises sawn timber and various components, pieces, and sets of products at different stages of manufacture, which are then assembled into a finished product.
