I don’t know if Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com readers are aware of a numerical crisis that is pending in the world of College Football.

A few months ago, there was a fear that the Big 12 Conference was going to melt down, and its members were going to disperse between the Big 10 Conference and the Pac-10 Conference.

Things eventually solidified, and the Big-12 found some stability. But, there were shifts; and now, I’m officially confused. And you should be too.

In 2011, The University of Nebraska-Lincoln, will move from the Big-12 to the Big-10 (Which currently “goes to eleven“) making it a Conference of Twelve teams.

In 2012, University of Colorado at Boulder, will move from the Big-12 to the Pac-10, along with The University of Utah, from the Mountain West Conference. This will make the Pac-10 a conference of twelve teams.

If you are doing the math (Did I tell you to use a pen and paper? No? Oh, my bad.) that leave the Big-12 with ten teams.

So, work with me here, this is the math:
The Big-10 Conference, will be 12 teams. 12 is greater than 10. (Except for large values of ten)
The Big-12 Conference, will be 10 teams. And 10 is less than 12 (Except for small values of 12)
The Pac-10 Conference, will be 12 teams. (Well does USC really count?)

Now, a rational person might think, should the Big-10 and the Big-12 just change names? Of COURSE not! For one, they are registered trade marks. And for two, a LOT of die hard alumni associations would riot. Seriously. This is the Big-10 we’re talking about, not the NFC West.

(Aside:

GO BLUE!

Just a idea of where I’m coming from in this crisis.)

I for one would like the Pac-10 to change their name to “The 12-Pack”. It would be a great marketing switch.

Cisco asked a good question in his comment:

So I’m wondering about your impressions re: Kagan=end of world. Or Obama, or insert democrat here.

I remember there was a lot of bitterness and anger from the left when Bush won the election over Gore. Certainly there were cries of “theft”, “cheat”, etc. And certainly there were the ridiculous comparisons of Bush to Hitler, etc. But was there anywhere near the amount of talk about how America is going to be destroyed by these people as there is these days now that democrats are in “power”?

Is this “chicken little” syndrome a trait of the right? Is all from Glenn Beck? Or a trait of our current society (left and right)? Or something else?

Because it’s really stupid. And immediately causes me to ignore anything else that person says… regardless of how legitimate it could be. Frankly I think it hurts the cause of the right.

I thought I would answer in a new article, because I’ve been thinking about this comparison a lot, in regards to how Obama Derangement Syndrome relates to Bush Derangement Syndrome.

First, lets look at the problems of generic derangement syndrome. Its a nasty thing. Essentially, the way I see it, one who suffers from a derangement syndrome seems to subconsciously align themselves in complete opposition to the subject of their disagreement. To the point where the “infected” is not only opposed to the subject in question, but exhibits an almost unashamed hatred towards the subject. The hatred gets so bad that the “infected” no longer talks about issues, but instead attacks the subject, the person.

As I was writing this article, I was reminded of a passage written by the late Douglas Adams:

It was a Cathedral of Hate.
It was the product of a mind that was not merely twisted, but actually sprained.
It was huge. It was horrific.
It had a Statue in it.
We will come to the Statue in a moment.
The vast, incomprehensibly vast chamber looked as if it had been carved out of the inside of a mountain, and the reason for this was that that was precisely what it had been carved out of. It seemed to Arthur to spin sickeningly round his head as he stood and gaped at it.
It was black.
Where it wasn’t black you were inclined to wish that it was, because the colours with which some of the unspeakable details were picked out ranged horribly across the whole spectrum of eye-defying colours from Ultra Violent to Infra Dead, taking in Liver Purple, Loathsome Lilac, Matter Yellow, Burnt hombre and Gan Green on the way.
The unspeakable details which these colours picked out were gargoyles which would have put Francis Bacon off his lunch.
The gargoyles all looked inwards from the walls, from the pillars, from the flying buttresses, from the choir stalls, towards the Statue, to which we will come in a moment.
And if the gargoyles would have put Francis Bacon off his lunch, then it was clear from the gargoyles’ faces that the Statue would have put them off theirs, had they been alive to eat it, which they weren’t, and had anybody tried to serve them some, which they wouldn’t.
Around the monumental walls were vast engraved stone tablets in memory of those who had fallen to Arthur Dent.
The names of some of those commemorated were underlined and had asterisks against them. So, for instance, the name of a cow which had been slaughtered and of which Arthur Dent had happened to eat a fillet steak would have the plainest engraving, whereas the name of a fish which Arthur had himself caught and then decided he didn’t like and left on the side of the plate had a double underlining, three sets of asterisks and a bleeding dagger added as decoration, just to make the point.
And what was most disturbing about all this, apart from the Statue, to which we are, by degrees, coming, was the very clear implication that all these people and creatures were indeed the same person, over and over again.
And it was equally clear that this person was, however unfairly, extremely upset and annoyed.
In fact it would be fair to say that he had reached a level of annoyance the like of which had never been seen in the Universe. It was an annoyance of epic proportions, a burning searing flame of annoyance, an annoyance which now spanned the whole of time and space in its infinite umbrage.
And this annoyance had been given its fullest expression in the Statue in the centre of all this monstrosity, which was a statue of Arthur Dent, and an unflattering one. Fifty feet tall if it was an inch, there was not an inch of it which wasn’t crammed with insult to its subject matter, and fifty feet of that sort of thing would be enough to make any subject feel bad. From the small pimple on the side of his nose to the poorish cut of his dressing gown, there was no aspect of Arthur Dent which wasn’t lambasted and vilified by the sculptor.
Arthur appeared as a gorgon, an evil, rapacious, ravenning, bloodied ogre, slaughtering his way through an innocent one-man Universe.
With each of the thirty arms which the sculptor in a fit of artistic fervour had decided to give him, he was either braining a rabbit, swatting a fly, pulling a wishbone, picking a flea out of his hair, or doing something which Arthur at first looking couldn’t quite identify.
His many feet were mostly stamping on ants.

In the subject of “America’s Destruction”, there was a lot of things that he Angry Left felt Bush was doing to destroy the country:

The Patriot Act – Fascism made into law

CAFTA – Jobs being sent, not overseas, but to Central and South America.

If Bush were elected, there would be more homelessness, and more starvation

Bush was a warmonger, then a war criminal, and then lying war criminal. The Angry Left begged other countries, like Canada or Great Britain, to arrest him and prosecute him for War Crimes.

In protests, they hung his likeness, burned him in effigy, drew him with blood dripped fangs, preying on the poor and the helpless, called him a chimp or a monkey, and portrayed him with Nazi symbols, all the way down to the Hitler mustache.

They even opposed him when he support their causes, like the Kennedy/McCain Immigration Bill.

You had the yelling-heads over at the Microsoft News Network screaming that Bush was an Idiot, a Fascist, and a Baby Killer, and demanding he resign every night. (I’m looking at you Keith Olberman, Rachel Maddow, Chris Matthews, and Ed Schultz.) Funny, I don’t see that same vitriol today.

And if that was not enough, there was an ultra-fringe movement who accused the Bush Administration that 9/11 was an inside job.

But like Cisco said, it was hard for me as a conservative libertarian to discount said arguments as just noise, however loud it might be.

Now Bush is gone, and there is a new President in office. Immediately before and after the 2008 election I saw Obama Derangement Syndrome raise its ugly head. Conservatives, even people whom I respect, started to do the same thing they complained that liberals were doing to Bush. (When I observed this behavior and pressed them about it, I got lame excuses, “Well the left did it, why can’t we?”, to which my response was a quiet, “I’m not the left.”)

I saw several symptoms of Obama Derangement Syndrome, first the “Birthers” (These are the people who mindlessly pursue the false-idea that Barack Obama is not a U.S. born citizen, and therefore cannot be President.
And while I do not think that the United States is a racist country, I do see some evidence of anti-black sentiments from some of far fringe. Those sentiments are horrid, vile and should be denounced in shame whenever they rear their ugly head; fortunately, this is a minutely small population.

But to Cisco’s point. The Right’s opposition to Obama is more of an attack on the man’s philosophy and policies. (At least that is what I see) as opposed to the left’s unending attack on Bush the person.

My observations on opposition to the current administration have been those of philosophy. The right views Obama as a Socialist, and for good reason, as the Obama team has push a more socialist agenda than the United States is used to: Pro-Union, Pro-Socialization of Private Industry, and pushing ideas like Health Care and Cap-and-Trade.

Now we have guys like Tom Tancredo, former (for good reason) Republican Congressman from Colorado, screaming that Obama is the biggest threat to the United States. (Bigger than the former Soviet Union in their prime, and bigger than Al Q’aida which brought planes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.) And he is demanding that Obama be impeached.

So yesterday afternoon, the United States Senate confirmed President Obama’s second supreme court nominee, Elena Kagan.

I didn’t have much to complain about this nomination. Even less than I had to complain about now-Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

Kagan, once sworn in, will replace retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, then the oldest serving Justice on the Supreme Court. She now sets a record as the third simultaneously serving woman on the Supreme Court, and the second consecutive female nomination/confirmation to the court.

While I do have concerns about Kagan’s experience, as she has never served as a judge in any court, I do admire her grasp of the law. I think Constitutional Constructionists might find an ally in her. But it is hard to say how much of her personal biases will appear behind the bench. I have a feeling that a left-leaning Justice was now replaced with a more moderate justice. If that is, or is not, the case, we shall see.
(This is of course contra-indicative of all the right-wing spam I get from the uber right-wing groups that the Republican-National-Committee sold my email address to. They claim that Justice Kagan is the end of Western Society as we know it.)

In regards to her experience, there was another former Solicitor General who assumed the office of Supreme Court Associate Justice. Thurgood Marshall.

Before Justice Kagan, the High Court looked something like this:

Before she rules on her first case, as a Supreme Court Justice, I’ve slated the layout as the following:
Here, is my perspective on the existing bench, from most liberal to most conservative.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Stephen Breyer

John Paul Stevens

Sonia Sotomayor

Anthony Kennedy

John Roberts

Samuel Alito

Clarence Thomas

Antonin Scalia

Not much changing, is there? I hope she moves more towards the middle and not towards the fringe. And I say that about any Justice on this list.

Now the court might look something like this:
from most liberal to most conservative.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Stephen Breyer

Sonia Sotomayor

Elana Kagan

Anthony Kennedy

John Roberts

Samuel Alito

Clarence Thomas

Antonin Scalia

Again, just a guess. I’m figuring she will lean left more than Kennedy, but not as left as Sotomayor.
And by my count, there are possibly four moderates on the court. To me that seems more comfortable than not.

Another item of note in this SCOTUS Changing of the guard, Antonin Scalia is now the Senior Associate Justice. I’m not sure who will take on the mantle of leadership of the liberal wing of the Supreme Court (also held by Stevens), but the most senior liberal on the court is now Justice Ginsberg. (Which is interesting because she and Scalia are good friends; and now they will represent the opposing views in the court’s decisions.)

Not to wish anything ill to a sitting Supreme Court Justice, but I imagine that President Obama will have at least one more nomination in the form of Justice Ginsberg. She is most likely the next Justice to retire, due to both her age and current health status. If you are the praying type, I suggest you pray for your leaders, including all your Supreme Court Justices.

I’d also like to take this time to thank retired Justice Stevens. He first started serving as a Federal Judge in 1970 (nominated by Richard Nixon), and was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1975 to replace Justice William Douglas, by Gerald Ford. In 40 years of Judicial Service, he has served under three Chief Justices: Warren Berger, William Rehnquist, and John Roberts.
Thank you Justice Stevens, and welcome to Justice Kagan.

Again.

You may remember that Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com notified you when:

Brett Favre Hates the Green Bay Packers (something The Editors of Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com received a lot of heat for)

Brett Favre Hates YOU!

Now, it is clear that Brett Favre is on a mission to fight the whole world. He might as well change his name to Scott Pilgrim. (lame comic reference, I know.)

But seriously. No one is taking this rumor/announcement seriously.

But Favre will still hold ESPN hostage for at least 48 hours.

[Editor's Note: This article was backlogged, and wanted to be published on August 3, 2010, but had to get in line.]

Again.
You may remember that Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com notified you when:

Brett Favre Hates the Green Bay Packers (something The Editors of Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com received a lot of heat for)

I just learned of some disturbing news on the global warming front. The sun is experiencing higher solar activity, and the Earth is about to be slammed by a Global Tsunami of heavily charged plasma.

Clearly, Man-Made Global Warming has become so out of control that it is affecting the SUN!

Solar Tsunami to Strike Earth
Earth is bracing for a cosmic tsunami Tuesday night as tons of plasma from a massive solar flare head directly toward the planet.

The Sun’s surface erupted early Sunday morning, shooting a wall of ionized atoms directly at Earth, scientists say. It is expected to create a geomagnetic storm and a spectacular light show — and it could pose a threat to satellites in orbit, as well.

“This eruption is directed right at us and is expected to get here early in the day on Aug. 4,” said Leon Golub of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. “It’s the first major Earth-directed eruption in quite some time.”

The solar eruption, called a coronal mass ejection, was spotted by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, which captures high-definition views of the sun at a variety of wavelengths. SDO was launched in February and peers deep into the layers of the sun, investigating the mysteries of its inner workings.

“We got a beautiful view of this eruption,” Golub said. “And there might be more beautiful views to come if it triggers aurorae.”

Views of aurorae are usually associated with Canada and Alaska, but even skywatchers in the northern U.S. mainland are being told they can look toward the north Tuesday and Wednesday evenings for rippling “curtains” of green and red light.

When a coronal mass ejection reaches Earth, solar particles stream down our planet’s magnetic field lines toward the poles. In the process, the particles collide with atoms of nitrogen and oxygen in the Earth’s atmosphere, which then glow, creating an effect similar to miniature neon signs.

The interaction of the solar particles with our planet’s magnetic field has the potential to create geomagnetic storms, or disturbances, in Earth’s magnetosphere. And while aurorae are normally visible only at high latitudes, they can light up the sky even at lower latitudes during a geomagnetic storm.

Fortunately for Earth-bound observers, the atmosphere filters out nearly all of the radiation from the solar blast. The flare shouldn’t pose a health hazard, Golub told FoxNews.com.

“It’s because of our atmosphere,” he explained, “which absorbs the radiation, as well as the magnetic field of the Earth, which deflects any magnetic particles produced.”

The radiation “almost never” makes it to ground, he noted, though pilots and passengers in airplanes may experience increased radiation levels akin to getting an X-ray.

The solar particles also could affect satellites, though scientists think that possibility is remote. Orbital Sciences Corp. believe a similar blast may have knocked its Galaxy 15 satellite permanently out of action this year.

This type of solar event has both government officials and satellite manufacturers worrying.

NASA scientists warned recently that high-energy electric pulses from the sun could cripple our electrical grid for years, causing billions in damages. In fact, the House is so concerned that the Energy and Commerce committee voted unanimously to approve a bill allocating $100 million to protect the energy grid from this rare but potentially devastating occurrence.

The sun’s activity usually ebbs and flows on a fairly predictable cycle. Typically, a cycle lasts about 11 years, taking roughly 5.5 years to move from a solar minimum, a period of time when there are few sunspots, to peak at the solar maximum, during which sunspot activity is amplified.

The last solar maximum occurred in 2001. The latest minimum was particularly weak and long- lasting.

The most recent solar eruption is one of the first signs that the sun is waking up — and heading toward another maximum.

So last night was a significant event in the continuing experiment The Editors of Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com and friends are performing. We call it The Manhattan Project.

We (TheTodd and myself) have been discussing for awhile the idea of setting up a taste test, to compare, side-by-side, the differences with the various bitters we’ve discovered since the Angostura Bitters Shortage of 2010. So at last night party, we were determined to make progress.

We came to the hypothesized conclusion, but we were still astonished as to the level of our results.

So last night’s experiment consisted of the following build of the Martini.

In a mixing glass, build the following:

Fill the glass half full of ice

Two Dashes of Bitters (this is the variation in the three Manhattans we enjoyed)

.75 oz of Sweet Vermouth (Martini and Rossi brand)

1.75 oz of Seagram’s “7″ Whiskey.

Stir with the ice until glass is cold and strain into a cocktail glass

Note: We stuck with the Seagram’s “7″, as Todd and I discovered that particular blend of Whiskey is our favorite in the Manhattan.

So the Bitters we used were the three we had on hand:

Angostura Bitters

Peychaud Bitters

Orange Bitters

Afterward, I named these Test-Bar cocktails after the three bombs in the original Manhattan Project:

The Gadget

Fat Man

Little Boy

So, after exhaustive tastings. We came to a unified conclusion:
The Angostura Bitters were the most bitter. The taste would stick to the back of your tongue.
In direct comparison, the Peychaud Bitters were less bitter, and stuck to the front of your tongue. In a Side-by-Side comparison, the Peychaud Bitters aroma of Anise really came out. TheTodd described it as “more floral” which I agreed with.
The Blood Orange Bitters were tasty, but mild in comparison to the other two.
Of the three, the Angostura Manhattan was our least favorite, and the Peychaud Bitter were our favorite. And the Angostura Manhattan was our least favorite. (Ironic that the most well known Bitters was the one we liked the least.)

We brought in Mike, who confirmed our findings.

It was a fun project, and the observers were entertained. At first they thought it was silly, but once we showed the three different bitters we were using: “Wow, that definitely IS a Manhattan Project!”

There is a yet untasted fourth Bitters that Todd and I want to try, before we close the book on the Manhattan Project.
Also, I’d like to see how the different bitters interact with different Whiskey/Rye/Bourbon bases. Perhaps there IS a place for Angostura in a Manhattan, if the right base whisk(e)y is used.

Stay tuned.

Stay tuned.

Well, its been about two years, so it was time for the Buick to get another battery.

This desert sun just eats batteries. And yeah, about every two years I find a dead battery in my car.

This time it was strong enough to jump. But when I got home, nothing.

So Growler took me to the auto store (Checker) and I handed the battery over to the clerk, explaining it would not hold a charge.

Usually, the guy will test it, and then suggest he hook it up to the charger. But this time, the guy put his gadget on the terminals and looked up at me. “Yeup, its dead.”

Still under warranty, I got 50% off the replacement. This time I opted for the 3 year warranty, instead the 2-year one I normally got.

So far so good, the car started. Hopefully, it will start again tomorrow, and hopefully, my alternator is still good. I don’t want to use an afternoon to replace that too.
