I sent a tweet this morning http://bit.ly/1hnIpA after stumbling on a job posting that had typos and bad grammar. Now I am not pointing fingers at the poster, I have never claimed to be a master of the English language or its grammar. I can even point out examples of emails I have sent that have been corrected by management. Honest mistakes I believe, what I keep questioning though is, what does it say about the company? Without knowing anything else other than the job requirements and responsibilities, is it wrong to think that this job might be a start-up, a fortune 500, or a non profit? Does it matter?

Seeing that listing, my mind raced back to all the job placement workshops I have attended; both throughout college, and as the requirements have changed due to the demands placed with Social Networking. It always seemed to be emphasized of the importance of correct grammar and punctuation, with the results being that your resume, (out of hundreds) would simply be thrown away. I think the same holds true today with our online presence on networking sites such as LinkedIn, commenting on blogs, even twitter (unless your using services such as TweetShrink. Hard to get it all in 140 characters.)

With proper grammar set aside, what are you doing to leverage your presence online as you search for your next job? With Google Trends showing LinkedIn with the most worldwide traffic these days, I thought I would submit 4 Tips to Build your LinkedIn Profile.

1. Maximize Your LinkedIn Headline

This is not your job title. Your headline is key to someone finding and picking you out of a search. This search could be either in LinkedIn or Google. Google gives LinkedIn a top page rank, and someone could actually find your LinkedIn profile in a google search, before finding it inside of LinkedIn. Before changing my headline, I did a Google search for the company I currently work for. Notice what the #1 search result is; even over the companies website.

The headline should address 2 things:

What you do functionally.

Who you serve (target market.)

2. Recommendations

Below is a screenshot from a slide deck of mine on recommendations in LinkedIn. If you believe in Karma, this it where it will come into play. Giving and receiving recommendations will carry more weight, then putting it on a resume.

3. Get the Word Out

Use LinkedIn “status updates” to let your network know that you are looking for a new job. You may also wish to let others know that you are looking to connect with individuals around your industry or brand.

4. Join Groups and Engage

What is happening in your Industry?

What groups could you join?

Show your expertise , buy helping others.

What Jobs are being posted in your field.

Engage and Create Transparency

I’m all for sharing and promoting great content online. I’m also in favor of creating transparency, and allowing communities to help shape our customer service. If all businesses did was stand behind a flashy website, and didn’t address real issues, our experience would always be a gamble. Our relationships are built through the conversations of others. Recommendations, opinions, experiences, all shape our decisions to either investigate further, or dive in blindly; risk a poor experience. The medical community seems to be at the tail end of the social revolution, particularly the small practice. I understand that there are some legal implications of doctors interacting with patients in a social relationship, e.g. diagnosing over twitter, or giving recommendations through a practice fan page. But undoubtedly they are still a business, and hold the same responsibility to provide the best customer experience they can. Why? As with any other private sector, there is competition. With the current debate in health care, and a need of some type of reform, our ability to choose will become greater. Where will you go for your next eye exam, dental checkup, or annual physical? Currently, it is primarily from your insurance options, from there, it’s through the recommendations of others. I had an experience recently with a doctor that has caused me to seek after a new primary care physician for my family and I, as well as expose my experience for others to know. It should not take a “shout” of “Comcast Sucks!” for a practice to think, “Oh no, now what do we do?” Here are 5 ways small medical practices could create transparency to their current and future patients.

Clark Kent or Superman

Who Are You? Do your patients know who you are other than a doctor? Is your bio on your website only plastered with what school and awards you’ve received? Let your patients know you are real, that you experience the same issues of life that they do. Do you or your family members purchase or use the same products/services you sell? Let them know. How? Create a blog, and share your experiences so that others that read it, will see there is a real person behind that professional website head shot.

Grow Your Ears

If someone needed to get through to you, how is that currently done? Is it consistent? Assign someone to monitor communication channels in the social space. Most small practices hire high school help, or summer interns. They know more about social media than you do. Set policy of engagement, and expectations of communication. Let them be the ears of your practice in the social space. People are talking about you weather you like it or not. By listening, you will see the needs of your patients and take action to address them.

Connect

Are you engaging in your patients interests outside of the 5 minutes in your chair? Do they have a skill that you could benefit from? Are they a resource for your practice or family. How would you know? Place a field in your patient information form for a personal blog or website. Add lines for social networks (twitter, facebook, linkedIn.) You might find a hidden resource in your patient you wouldn’t have known otherwise. Setup a patient blog folder in your Google Reader. You will be amazed not only by what your patients know, but how they can help you.

Embrace Change

Most of us are afraid of change. Many are cautious about sharing. I have spoke with business owners who feel they are “giving away the farm” by sharing their advice or experiences with others. Not only does that make someone an authority, it makes you real, genuine, and sincere. As stated in point 2, your patience are talking about you and your practice. They are talking about your industry. As consumers, they will go where they feel the most comfort, the most value. Why not be on the front lines with them, and respond accordingly. The “boys clubs” and medical executives will not shape your future anymore. If you don’t have patients, who will save you.

Your Late

Social Media, Networking, Community Engagement, are not going away. The tools used will change, but the ability to communicate with the world is getting smaller everyday. You must start now! There are so many resources out there; it can be overwhelming. What is so great about it though is, we as an online community are here to help. Every business practice is different, and needs special attention. That will evolve over time and strategy. For now on a personal brand, you must engage. Initially reach out to your close friends, family members, and those in your local community. Dive in head first and don’t be afraid of shallow water. This space is deep.

What are you thoughts on Social Media in the medical industry, and in small business? What concerns, questions, or apprehensions do you have. Please keep this conversation going by adding your comments below. If you would like to discuss with me further regarding strategy in your own practice, please leave your specific requests below, and I will reply. Thank you again for stopping by. ~Jeremy

While everybody else TALKS about “cloud computing“, we at DreamHost take
it to its most extremely INSANE limit!

We figured, hey, building a data center is already pretty darn difficult,
why not just go ahead and make it a few orders of magnitude moreso? But
at the same time get all the myriad benefits that only a data center
actually physically IN the clouds can provide:

* 100% earthquake resistance.
* 100% fire resistance.
* 100% Somali pirate resistance.
* 100% solar power reliability (we just float along with the sun).
* 100% wireless networking provided by aircell.com.
* -40 degrees (F and C) outside => just open a window for cooling.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s a TON of incredibly difficult logistics that
go into making a floating data center, not the least of which was hunting
and trapping all the Pegasuses we mount our racks to. Pegasai?

They don’t call us DREAMHost for nothing.

1. Design a Retro DreamHost T-shirt, Get Free Hosting FOR LIFE!

We wanted to get this new floating data center up and running in time
for the company’s 62nd birthday a couple of weeks ago, and um we did!

We also wanted to celebrate the opening of our floating data center with
a chance to get FREE lifetime hosting.. just by doing something you all
already do anyway: design t-shirts!

You see, there was a flood back in our old terrestrial data center and
the DreamHost archives were damaged; decades upon decades of classic
old DreamHost swag t-shirt… destroyed.

To try and make up for this in some way, we’re having a contest for you,
yes you, to design a new and improved RETRO DreamHost T-shirt (or more)…
the best one from each decade (60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s) will get made!

You’ll get free hosting for life, the respect of your parents, and some
copies of your own t-shirt design specially delivered air mail by the
bald eagles we use to provide the physical security at our new floating
data center.

2. New! WordPress / One-Clicks Auto-Upgrader!

The best thing about cloud computing is how you don’t have to worry
about anything! Every day is the same old sun, every night is the
same old moon. Except for when it’s a new moon or something like that.

I guess I’m saying that the idea is, once you’ve switched to cloud
computing for your software, you don’t really need to worry about
“maintaining” it… the “cloud” just does it for you! And by “cloud” I
mean “the fairies in DreamHost’s new floating cloud data center”.

Well, the fairies have gotten around to finally making our one-click
software truly one-click with the addition of an “automatic upgrades”
option!

When you set your software to that option, you’re done! Instead of just
getting notified when a new version of WordPress or PhpBB or Trac or
whatever is out, we’ll ALSO upgrade it for you!

This is only for the “advanced” one-clicks… our “easy” one-clicks
already did this. They’ve always been so much more cloudy.

3. New! Full API Support for WordPress / One-Clicks!

You need to be pretty light for your jet pack to get you up to our new
floating data center, so when you come, you’re probably only going to
have an iPhone or something with you.

And you probably aren’t going to like using our panel with your iPhone,
because as much as they call it the “full web”, well, iDunno, I’m just
trying to tie in the fact that we’ve added full API support for all
our one-click creation/modification/upgradetion/deletion methods now!

And it’s only thanks to that API that we have any DreamHost iPhone apps
at all!

4. New! Our Web Panel Search is FAST!

Have you noticed that our web panel looks a little bit like an airplane
cockpit? It’s been like that for a while, even from way back before we
had an airborne data center… and I guess it’s because we’ve got a lot
of features!

Of course, a couple of months ago we added a new search option to the
top of our panel, to help you not only find whatever crazy niche feature
you’re thinking of quickly, but to also enter any specific domain, user,
email, or database you’d like to work on!

It was pretty awesome. Pretty darn awesome. Except for one thing. It was

S L O W

Well, now it’s FST! So fast in fact, I dropped the A! Give it a try up
there! Just start typing a letter and BOOM, what are we, Amazon or
something? Google perhaps? BING?!

5. DHSOTM

It wouldn’t be a DreamHost newsletter if it weren’t in the wrong month,
and it wouldn’t be a data center if it weren’t in the wrong cloud. Er,
rather, I mean, it wouldn’t be a month if it didn’t have a Site of it
contest winner!

http://www.bentleyo.com/

before, like the last Disney-Pixar film, it floats out of reach..
“Up” yours,
Josh Jones!

——————–

Gotta web host you love? What is it and why? Feel free to comment
