1. Shoot calm deer. A dying burst of adrenaline isn't good, and a wounded, gut-shot deer is worse—for the sake of the deer and your meat.

2. Shoot clean. A neck or spine shot kills instantly and wastes almost no meat, but a heart/lung shot behind the shoulder is more reliable.

3. Recover and cool quickly. Traditional field dressing is adequate below 32 degrees (F). The hide protects meat from dirt. Above freezing, skin and perhaps quarter to aid cooling. You can also place ice within the body cavity. Seal ice in plastic bags to keep water off the meat. Hose out the cavity if it's dirty , but then air dry it.

4. Remove tenderloins right away. Don't let them dry out! Hang and age the rest of the carcass in clean, dry, 35- to 45-degree (F) shade for up to 14 days—your option. Keep creepy crawlers away with cheese cloth.

5. Skin in a clean environment. Remove thin silver skin with a fillet knife. Fillet backstraps and slice for butterfly steaks. Trim steaks, roasts, stew meat, hamburger free of bones and waxy fat.

6. Cook steaks rare to medium. Who wants to eat boot leather?

7. Eat. Savor your free-range, renewable, locally grown, organic protein.

The word comes from the Latin taxi, which means "movement," and derma, which means "skin." So the taxidermist moves skin from what was once a live specimen to a form that can be preserved and displayed in a lifelike way. Your part is to provide lifelike raw materials for him to work with. Here's what to avoid if you expect your taxidermist to give you first rate work:
1. Handling carelessly in the field. Treat the animal with respect. If you must drag a deer, drag it on both sides. Otherwise, the animal may look worn on one side. Better yet, drag it on a plastic sled or a tarp. And for goodness sake, drag it with the grain of the hair, not against it. Yes, I've seen hunters drag deer by the back legs, and it ain't pretty.

2.Being a show-off. Yes, you should be proud of that trophy, but don’t get carried away with showing it off. Get some good photos and make a few phone calls, but don’t drive all over town with your buck. If you must haul a deer very far in the back of a pickup truck, stop somewhere and roll it over to make sure heat isn’t trapped on the bottom. Protect it from the wind – you don’t want to drive airborne road grime into the hair. Also, deer hair is hollow – it kinks when it bends and it’s easy to break. Same goes for turkeys – feathers are especially easy to ruin. Get it to the taxidermist as soon as possible.
3.Leaving the skin on. A deer hide traps heat, and heat stimulates the growth of bacteria. Once bacteria get into the hair follicles the hair will begin to slip and your trophy will be ruined. Warm weather accelerates the process. So, skin him as soon as possible. The meat and the hide will cool more quickly – better for eating and better for mounting.
4.Slitting the throat. That’s just one way your knife can ruin a trophy. I saved a newspaper clipping from the local paper of a proud hunter with a high, wide 8-point. You could see, just below the buck’s white throat patch, where the hunter slit the throat to “bleed it out.” Never do that. You’ll cut through hair and it will be impossible for the taxidermist to fix without replacing that section of hide. Besides, putting a knife to the throat of a live deer is a good way to get badly injured. Antlers and hooves hurt. And if he’s dead, you can’t get more blood out of him any other way than normal field dressing. If he isn’t dead, shoot him again.
5.Going cheap. Some guys shop around for the cheapest taxidermist, unaware that inferior materials might be the reason for the lower price. Other hunters have a buddy do it for just the cost of materials. No criticism of your buddy, but you need a taxidermist experienced in measuring so he can get the right size form and put eyes, ears, and antlers into proper relationship. A fledgling taxidermist might be doing you a favor, but down the road he’ll probably hope you don’t tell anyone he did it.
6.Getting knife crazy. Improper skinning can damage your trophy. At best, it gives the taxidermist extra work. At worst, your mount will show seams that make it look unrealistic. So, don’t make any cuts in the head and neck. Definitely don’t cut up the front of the deer’s neck. Never cut from the outside in; always cut from the inside out. When you separate the head from the carcass leave plenty of skin. Then let your taxidermist skin the head. He knows how to do the eyelids, nose and lips.
7.Being ignorant about taxidermy. Actually, this is something your taxidermist can fix – if you stop by his shop before going hunting and ask him for advice on how to handle your animal from the field to his shop. Take his advice, and he’ll give you a better job.

Ideally, the relationship between the hunter and the taxidermist is a two-way mutual admiration society. If he admires the raw materials you bring him, you’re more likely to admire the mount he returns to you. And so will others when they see it on your wall.

Deer hunting the West is considerably different than deer hunting other regions of the US. Although the Mid-west may offer some of the finest whitetail deer hunting in the world, it cannot offer what deer hunting the West can. First, there are several Western Whitetail sub-species including several unique trophies such as the Columbian whitetail, Coues whitetail, Carmen Mountain whitetail and Texas whitetail found in the West. Second, the west offers other hunting opportunities during the deer hunt. In addition to whitetail deer, a hunter may be able to pursue mule deer, elk, bear, and even mountain lion during the deer season, depending on the state hunted.
Hunting the West often requires the hunter to traverse steep and rugged terrain, far away from major roads; which requires the hunter be in optimal shape. Most of the West is public land, offering all hunters easy access to millions of acres in which to hunt. The majority of public land is administered by the US Forest Service (USFS) and Bureau of Land Management (BLM). In contrast, some western states like Texas are almost entirely private and access to hunting location can prove to be difficult. If you are hunting your home state or traveling across several states in pursuit of a western whitetail trophy, utilizing important hunting resources can determine the overall success of your hunt.
The ultimate hunting resource the hunter should utilize is the website or annual publication of the state Game & Fish department. Knowing and understanding the rules and regulations of the state is important and leads to strong hunting ethics. Additionally, several states offer "insider information" on where to hunt and how to hunt. Another valuable hunting resource is a quality map. A standard USFS or BLM map is useful, but the addition of a topographic map or aerial map will prove to be invaluable. In addition to a paper map, several software topographic map solutions are available as well. One of the best aerial mapping solutions is Google Earth. Utilizing these specialty maps allows printing of specific locations.
Western Whitetail is a one-stop hunting resource with the Western Hunter in mind, be sure to visit their website at http://www.westernwhitetail.com/.

Nestled below the jagged peaks of the Rockies, Bozeman is an ideal venue for testing and developing gear, and is a popular destination for hunting and outdoor recreation. Its forward-thinking and outdoor-centric culture makes it a natural home for Sitka.

“At Sitka, we put tremendous value on our products, people and culture. We believe being in Bozeman will enable us to continue building our team of authentic hunters and outdoorsmen,” commented Kevin Sloan, Sitka Business Leader. “This move will also enable us to better test and develop game-changing gear, while thriving in Montana’s creative, outdoor culture.”

Customers will not experience any interruptions in service or shipping, as Sitka will remain entirely functional in Napa, Calif., until the new office opens. Customers will be notified when the move is complete.

The deadline to buy raffle tickets by mail for this year's Arizona Big Game Super Raffle is July 15, 2011 (mail orders must be received by that date). Online orders will be accepted until 10 p.m. MST on July 17, 2011; visit www.arizonabiggamesuperraffle.com and click on the "buy tickets" link.

Hunts available through the raffle include antelope, black bear, buffalo, Coues white-tailed deer, desert bighorn sheep, elk, turkey (Merriam’s or Gould’s), javelina, mountain lion and mule deer.
Winners will be able to hunt for 365 days almost anywhere in the state of Arizona during a special 2011-2012 hunting season.

Also up for raffle are two bonus items: an incredible Swarovski optics package valued at $9,700, ticket cost of only $10; and, a guided trophy elk hunt in New Mexico valued at $6,500, ticket cost of only $20.
All of the tickets are affordable and range in cost from $5-$25 depending on the species you choose.
The Arizona Big Game Super Raffle is a collaborative effort among various nonprofit conservation groups to bring 10 of the Arizona Game and Fish Commission special big game tags to raffle for the purpose of raising funds for the benefit of wildlife.

Every dollar raised by these special tags goes toward management projects that benefit each tag’s particular species in Arizona, and also indirectly benefit other species.

The drawing will be held July 21, 2011 at the Outdoor Experience 4 All banquet at Ashley Manor in Chandler.
These states include: Colorado, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Minnesota, Iowa, Utah and Texas. If approved, the proposal would provide additional public hunting opportunities in fulfillment of the National Wildlife Refuge System Improvement Act of 1997.

In addition to the new deer and turkey hunting programs at Crane Meadows, other proposed hunting opportunities include:

-- Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge (Colorado) would increase big game hunting by offering elk hunting for the first time. The refuge also allows migratory bird hunting, upland game hunting and fishing.

-- Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge (Louisiana) would open for the first time to migratory bird hunting of waterfowl and coot. The refuge also allows fishing.

-- Coldwater River National Wildlife Refuge (Mississippi) would open for the first time to migratory bird hunting of duck and geese; upland game hunting of squirrel, rabbit and raccoon; and big game hunting of deer and hogs. The refuge also permits fishing.

-- Currituck National Wildlife Refuge (North Carolina) would open for the first time to big game hunting of deer and hogs.

-- Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge (Minnesota) would increase acreage for migratory bird hunting, upland game hunting and big game hunting.

-- Northern Tallgrass Prairie National Wildlife Refuge (Minnesota/Iowa) would increase acreage for migratory bird hunting, upland game hunting and big game hunting. The refuge would expand the species for migratory bird and upland game hunting.

-- Ouray National Wildlife Refuge (Utah) would allow for the first time upland game hunting of turkey and big game hunting of elk. The refuge also allows migratory bird hunting and fishing.

-- Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge (Minnesota) would open new areas to migratory bird hunting. It would allow big game hunting of turkey and deer for the first time. The refuge is also open for fishing.

-- Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge (Texas) would open three new units to upland game hunting of squirrels and rabbits and big game hunting of feral hogs and whitetail deer. The refuge is also open for migratory bird hunting and fishing.

While definitions of hunting categories vary by refuge and state, migratory bird hunting generally includes ducks and geese. Upland game hunting may cover such animals as game birds, rabbit, squirrel, opossum and coyote. Big game hunting may include such animals as wild turkey, deer and feral hogs.

Under the National Wildlife Refuge System Improvement Act of 1997, the Service can permit hunting and fishing where they are compatible with refuge purpose and mission.

NRA played a key role in getting language included in this act making hunting a “priority public use” on National Wildlife Refuges.

The NRA encourages all its hunter members to submit comments in support of the Service’s efforts to open new refuges to hunting and to expand existing refuge hunt programs. Despite federal law that encourages the Service to promote hunting opportunities on refuges, the anti-hunting groups always submit comments in opposition.

The once-in-a-lifetime bull elk tag is the most coveted tag in the state.

After harvesting my bull elk and punching that once-in-a-lifetime tag, I had to wait three years before I could apply for an antlerless elk tag. Well, on the first attempt, I drew an antlerless elk tag for the Bordeaux Unit. This will be an awesome opportunity to witness crazy elk rutting action in the Pine Ridge of Nebraska with an excellent chance of harvesting a mature cow elk.

With the timing of the hunt, I'll also use this hunt to field test several pieces of gear that will be used on the Wyoming mule deer hunt.

Wyoming has been an annual favorite for antelope hunting, but it was time to pursue mule deer. I took 2 deer preference points into the draw, so the application approach was to put a top, blue-chip unit as the first choice and an easy-to-draw general tag as the second choice. This application approach gives us two good opportunities for drawing the tag, but an even better chance at hunting mule deer while earning another preference point.
The game plan worked out perfectly and we drew our second choice for Region D general deer tag. Since we drew the second choice, the preference point total rises to three.
Now, the real work begins in preparation for the October rifle season. 100% DIY on public land...stay tuned!

1. Elk have been known to eat the trail markers
2. Moose have been known to chase runners
3. The Bighorn Mountains
4. Course elevation at the start: 7650 feet & Max elevation: 7854 feet (course map)
5. Total elevation change: 4056 feet with a Cat 4 and Cat 5 climb

The race started at the Dry Fork aid station with 50K and 100-mile runners passing through. The weather was amazing and it was going to be an epic day in the beautiful Bighorn Mountains. From the starting line, we ascended up the Freeze Out Road passing through mud and snow-covered trails along the way. After running over various gravel roads and pack trails, we crested at Camp Creek Ridge at 8,100 feet. At this point, I was in third place and feeling strong with a comfortable pace.
Then, we started the gradual descent down the Sheep Creek drainage to 7,300 feet using an old four-wheel drive road with wild flowers covering the mountainside. At about mile 4.5, I was still at a comfortable pace crossing through the Upper Sheep Creek aid station. But, then I hit the CAT 5 climb and that pace became a grueling walk.
After cresting the hill, the trail dropped into Tongue River Canyon as we ran next to the roaring white rapids with more wildflowers in view. But the rocky trail prevented taking in the beautiful sights as every step was carefully orchestrated to navigate the rocks.
As I entered the Lower Sheep Creek aid station at mile 10 and 5,025 feet, I quickly filled my Camelbak QuikGrip bottle and dropped a Nuun tablet for some electrolytes. I was focused on maintaining my second place position with hopes of catching the leader. The miles kept clicking away until the Tongue River aid station at mile 12.5 and 4,375 feet.
After this aid station, the course was on a flat gravel road until the finish line, but my legs were absolutely trashed from the steep downhill runs. The last aid station -- Homestretch -- at mile 15 indicated only three miles remained. At this point, my legs were gone and couldn’t find a comfortable pace. As a result, I ended up slipping to fourth place overall and second in my age division.

Place: 4th Overall, 2nd in Age Division (20-29)
Overall Time: 2:13:32
Average Pace: 7:15

Nutrition Approach-
Honey Stinger gel at 0:45
1/2 banana at 1:15
Honey Stinger gel at 1:45

Changes for the 2012 race:
More CrossFit to strengthen the legs. Simply put, my leg strength failed way before my enduance and stamina.
Improve overall speed. I need more speed for the flat stretch leading into Dayton.
Improve downhill running ability

The largest single commitment is $20,000 to improve waterways on Swanson Reservoir wildlife management area near Trenton, Neb. The chapter also dedicated $13,285 to support safe archery and shooting sports programs for youth.
The NWTF will support many projects that are in partnership with government agencies, conservation groups and landowners. NWTF's Nebraska chapters have raised and spent more than $517,000 on projects in the state since 1985.

Months of dedicated training had finally paid off when the gun blasted to start the 2011 Lincoln Half-Marathon. The weather was perfect on race day and the field was stacked with quality runners.

Since January, I used a mix of CrossFit and CrossFit Endurance workouts to build the strength, speed, power, stamina and flexibility required to set a new PR. With a goal of sub-1:18, I entered the race with a specific game plan for achieving that goal.

I crossed the first mile at exactly 6:00 and continued to run 5:50 to 5:55 miles throughout the race. Everything felt great, including my legs, stomach and mind. Here's a breakdown of my race splits:
5K- 18:30
10K- 36:44
15K- 55:10
Race Time- 1:17:45
Pace/Mile- 5:57

Overall, I finished 14th out of 7225 runners, but most importantly I completed a PR and had a great time doing it. Time to train for 2012...

This was the 5th Annual Ni-Bthaska-Ke 4 Mile and 12K -- known as one of the toughest trail runs in the Midwest. The 12K takes place in Platte River State Park with a combination of single-track, scenic, and ruggedly challenging trails.

My goal for the race was to finish under 60 minutes by starting out with the front of the pack. Luckily, the trail was in excellent condition allowing for fast downhills and strong, powerful uphill ascents. I kept a solid pace throughtout the race and ended up finishing in 59:59 for 4th place overall.
My first ever State Farm 5K was in 2007 with a finishing time of 20:00 for an average of 6:27 miles. Through proper training, CrossFit, CrossFit Endurance, paleo nutrition and overall becoming a better runner, I've significantly improved that time.

I was looking to break into the 16:00 range for this race, but ended up squeaking out a 17:42 for an average of 5:42 miles. The Lincoln Half-Marathon is about five weeks away and it's time to crank up the training.

Time: 17:42
Pace: 5:42
Overall Place: 4 of 670
Place in Gender: 4 of 245
Division M2529 Place: 1 of 56

We’ve all been there- it’s the moment of truth and your left guessing shot distance as a buck or bull quickly walks into range. Getting a shot off is now or never and there’s no time to fumble for your laser rangefinder. Sometimes we GUESS RIGHT- and sometimes we GUESS WRONG. The Tagged Out archery rangefinder system allows you to range game at full draw and removes all ranging guesswork from the bowhunting equation. With the Tagged Out, the simple four-step ranging process is as easy as this: 1) Draw your bow 2) Range the animal 3) Go to the appropriate pin 4) Release. The moment of truth is no time to question the distance of your target and with a Tagged Out rangefinding system on your Spot Hogg sight, you don’t have to.

<a href="http://www.spot-hogg.com/sightaccessories.html"target="_blank" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">

Based upon average size of several game species chest measurements, the foolproof Tagged Out rangefinder creates a unique frame of reference, which allows you to place the bottom of the rangefinder on the belly line of your target while simultaneously lining it up with the horizontal line of the animals back. Using the size of the reference frame you can accurately judge distance from 20-60 yards to select the right pin and loose an arrow with confidence. If the animal is too small in the reference frame, us a lower pin and vice-versa.

The Tagged Out’s aluminum construction and glow-in-the-dark powder coat finish make it lightweight and easy to see in all lighting conditions. Each unit is easily fastened to the face of your sight via five screws and will remain set in all hunting situations.
Benefits of the Tagged Out ranging system include:

• Instant, hands-free visual ranging at full draw
• Ranging ability up to 60 yards
