A New Search Engine With A Shitty Logo

What if you launched a new search engine and nobody cared? Hey there. Jeremy Turner here, and I’m number one on bing.com. You know Bing.com, it used to be live.com, Microsoft’s search engine which nobody used, and now it’s been re-branded as something that makes even less sense and nobody will use. It’s tagline is that it’s a “decision engine” or some crap like that. Whatever. Good luck with that Microsoft. Also, your logo is horrible. Brand New reviews the horizontally violated Bing logo here.

Now I never really used live.com to search for anything other than my own name, but it looks like Bing has added images to the top of the search results that live.com used to provide. Who knows, maybe they’ve always been there. Anybody who used live.com previous to this “re-imagination” please leave a comment to set me straight. So to be clear, none of those images results are of me. I’ve done a pretty good job of keeping pictures of myself off the Internet. Yay for me.

One of my favorite images that came up when searching for jeremy turner had to be this one:

I know I’m sure the photo makes sense in context—well, as much sense as dressing up for historical reenactments can make, which in my mind is very little. Like most Americans who’s ancestors took the idea of Manifest Destiny way too seriously and ended up responsible for Oklahoma (both the territory and the musical) I can claim some Choctaw (or Cherokee) blood myself, however I am definitely not as dedicated to my heritage as this Jeremy Turner. Not sure I’d ever participate in a 18th century French or Indian War re-enactment, at least not without proper preperation and plenty of water. And, as if this guy wasn’t going to have enough trouble getting through airport security:

Keeping Up Appearances

I’m Jeremy Turner and I’ve got a bunch of things I could write about today. I could tell you about how I’m feeling out of place having to edit this post in clunky old Firefox because the Safari 4 beta and Wordpress 2.7.1 don’t play nice together when adding hyperlinks to your posts. Annoying, but I’ll make it through. Or, I could write about how the new plugins I’ve installed, like Disqus for administrating comments. I could also write about all the plugins I’ve removed, like all that Twitter crap I thought was really cool in January junking up the layout of this site. What I don’t want to write about is how you could have just “share” button provided by AddThis all allong to “toot” about this article if you like. No need for any extra plugins. Then there’s this swanky new theme, Inuittypes, that I just started using, just bursting golden SEO promise and a super-clean layout. I would usually write something like the following:

This new layout theme you see before you is called Inuittypes was developed by Bizzarctic. It is beautiful. If I had the patience and the downtime this is really close to exactly how I would design my blog. A lot closer to what I was looking for when I started using “Unstandard.” It’s coded with simple, “best practice” SEO (a full list of which you can read about here) in mind which is important to me. It also has a fabulous integrated control panel for setting up most everything you’d ever want to, without having to futz around with the source code. It also supports widgets, which I’ve not had too much experience with but have installed the Twitter widget nonetheless. It came pre-loaded with a Flickr sidebar widget so I figured “what the heck” and fired it up. I am really digging this theme.

But who cares, right?

I could write about the polar reversal of my schadenfreude, and how Jeremy “Happyballs” Turner is once again back on the first page of Google while this site continues to appear and disappear at the finicky whim of some bipolar algorithm, or how my Twitter account started showing up hundreds of results higher than this site. Or I could write about how Google “Profiles” have started showing up on some SERPs, the original objective of this site becoming an even more emberrasing piece of performance art. It would go like this:

So here’s the skinny: enter the search query me in to Google and you will be greeted with a faux AdWords ad inviting you to sing up for google profiles. From there you enter information about yourself–there is a minimum required in order to show up on the SERP, although it can be filled with dirty, dirty lies–and viola! Your profile name and picture show up at the bottom of the first SERP, along with others a select group of others that share your name.

Or something like that.

What I don’t want to write about right now is how I just performed a vanity search to see how my Google Profile is doing (still #1) and saw that this blog is now ranked #4 for the query jeremy turner, right behind two entries for the landscape photographer and one for the musician who I am sure someday is going to beat my ass. If I had to guess, I think this has something to do with adding this site to my Google Profile but, like most things with Google, I can’t be sure.

I could also write about how 60% of my open applications right now sport an icon that is a variation of a blue sphere, requiring extra cognitive power required to decide which one to select in the Application Swicher, cognitive power that I just don’t have at the moment. I was saving this topic for a full post sometime in the future but seeing as how my Twitter abuse has helped in distilling ideas so succinctly I may have just said all that I need to on the subject.

See the thing is, I don’t find any of that stuff very interesting to write about. Seriously, this has been a torturous exercise for me. Somebody help me. I will gladly take suggestions in the comment area as to what I should be writing about. Please, don’t be shy.

Dinosaurs

OK, so my Wordpress installation is obviously pissed at me and has decided to passive-aggressively retaliate by not sending me an email when somebody leaves a comment on my blog. Yesterday I read a comment on this post left by the subject of the post himself, Jeremy Turner–Abstract Artist. Unfortunately the comment has been held in queue for a month now while I left this site on the back burner. Can we talk about this, Wordpress? Why do you want to hurt me? You can read the comment yourself, but my interpretation of events is that Jeremy is painfully aware of his site’s condition, and would like nothing more than to just get its remains off the internet and out of your search results. I feel bad for “rubbing in” the fact that his sites was broken yet at the time still highly ranked by Google, so I am going to try and help. Jeremy asked if there’s any way to remove himself from the game so to speak and I thought this would be a great opportunity to talk a bit more about the tools offered by the big three search engines to do just that. I’ve mentioned these tools before but Jeremy’s comment has inspired me to explain myself a bit further and share why these tools are helpful and possibly essential for managing your search presence.

Read on to find out how to rid the internet of your own ancient remains. Before I get in to the details, after re-familiarizing myself with these three products as research for this post, it seems the simplest way to remove your ancient remains from the internet is to add the “noindex” meta-tag to the header of your site, and/or disallow all web crawlers in your robots.txt file. If that is all you are looking to do then click on those two links, follow the instructions and have at it. All you need is a clear head, a text editor, and FTP access to your web host. If you are looking to do more please read on for a summary of the three products I use to manage search results for the websites I administer.

Google Webmaster Tools
This is probably the one you’ll want to sign up for first, since 60% or more of all search traffic comes from Google. Even if this is in decline Google has got a way to go before you can question their dominance. Sign up for an account, add the URL or URLs you would like to track, verify your control of the site(s) by adding a meta tag or uploading a specifically formatted file which Google provides, and away you go. From your Webmaster Tools account you can manage exactly what pages you do and don’t want to show up in Google searches, and point Google to a sitemap of your website to make it easily digestible by the Google Robots. You can remove entire directories from search—say a folder filled with PDFs, javascripts or your “images” directory—set the preferred “canonical” version of your URL (www or no www), set your geographic target, allow or disallow image search, see the top search queries that get people to your site, easily see what other websites link to yours, control sitelinks if Google has bestowed such an honor upon you, create custom 404 error pages, and um a few other awesome things. I don’t want to spoil it for you, just sign up already. Considering of the impetus of this post I will go on to say that once you set up your website to be tracked by Webmaster Tools you can download a list of all of the pages that Google has indexed and delete the ones that are no longer relevant. You also have the option to delete your entire site from Google results. I actually did this yesterday with my jeremyturner.info domain because it is still ranking higher for queries than jeremyturner.net, and I am concerned that Google may be docking my site for having duplicate content because of the two URLs. You can find a more specific explanation on how to remove your site from Google here.

Yahoo! Site Explorer
Same concept as Webmaster Tools, except lamer because it’s Yahoo! Verify your site with either a meta-tag in the of your site, or upload a file, and you are on your way. They provide you with the tools to remove individual URLs (although for some odd reason you are limited to 25 removals. What gives, Yahoo?) or you can remove your entire site. Neither Yahoo! Site Explorer nor Windows Live are as comprehensive as Webmaster Tools, but they get the job done, and their lack of complexity accurately correlates to the amount of time one should spend fiddling with each of them. Start with Webmaster Tools and work your way down. Of course because your mom has never changed her homepage from MSN you might want to start with Windows Live first.

Windows Live
Of the three, this one has the most convoluted sign-up process coupled with the hardest to find URL. I would expect nothing less from our friends in Redmond. And just like the other two, you authenticate your site and you are rewarded with tools to validate various parts of your site, check who links to you, who you link to, research the keywords that bring people to your site, point the MSN web crawler to your sitemap, etc. To remove your site from MSN they suggest adding the “noindex” meta tag to the header of your site, or disallowing their crawler in your robot.txt file.

OK, so there’s a quick overview of the three products, now get out there boys/girls and start managing your search presence! It’s the only way to keep your past failures from cropping up every time you do a vanity search for your name. Now if I could just convince Have you found out anything surprising about you or your site, like why is nambla.org linking to my site, or gosh I must have a man-crush on Merlin because I link to his site in every blog post, etc.? New Year, New Plugins

Jeremy Turner here with a brief post about a few new Wordpress plugins that I’m trying out on this here blog.

Twittar
Just like the rest of the Interwebz I am totally addicted to Twitter right now. This Wordpress plugin inserts a blog commenter’s Twitter avatar to their comment. If no Twitter avatar is present, it pulls from Gravatar. I don’t know much about Gravatar, but it seems like cool enough idea. It’s a service that lets you use one picture for all of your social network identities. Sounds like a good idea to keep your branding consistent across platforms. Somebody let me know if they’ve had any experience with it, good, bad, or otherwise. If neither are found then you get the default avatar, currently Domokun. Twittar is not perfect however. What it is doing is matching your Twitter account email address with the email address you use to post a comment in order to pull your avatar, but I still think it’s a pretty neat way to link up with the social media platform of the moment.

TweetSuite
Just a few days ago this plugin was called TweetBacks and had only one main feature, but in the days it’s taken me to get around to writing this the plugin has been updated and spun off in to TweetSuite with a host of new features. This is another Twitter related plugin (told you I was addicted.) which “Show(s) tweets that mention your post as “tweetbacks” in your comments section. Basically it adds any “tweets” about your article as a comment on your blog, even accounting for the four major URL shortening services in the process. Highly recommended if you want to integrate your blog with Twitter. TweetSuite also adds a link at the bottom of your post to let people easily add a link to your post in Twitter.

Twitter Updater
Automatically updates your Twitter feed with a link to your blog, with options to tweet when you are tweaking a blog post, starting a new blog post, or just thinking about maybe writing a blog post sometime next Tuesday. Three of those things are actually true. This plugin can quickly turn your Twitter account in to a stream of spammy posts if you leave all of the options on, and/or if you are constantly updating your blog, so proceed with your own level of discretion.

AddThis
Pretty much the same functionality as the ShareThis plugin I was using, I just decided to change it up a bit for the aught-nine. In my opinion AddThis has more robust reporting capabilities than ShareThis—who doesn’t love charts and graphs?—and is also more universally recognizable, e.g. I see it more often than AddThis so everybody else must too because everybody’s life experience is just like mine which is why I don’t understand why you’re being such a dick about this, I mean don’t you get it? Anyhoo…

Spreading The .Net

So here I am, sitting in the local coffee shop, checking out the mobile version of Wordpress. This will be my first post typed mostly with my thumbs so please bear with me. I am hoping this constraint will make my writing style more concise and cliché free. No promises though.

As you may have noticed, last week I decided to change the primary domain for this blog from jeremyturner.info to jeremyturner.net. As previously reported The Goolge has held a ranking grudge against dot info domains ever since GoDaddy had a fire sale on them a while back. Conceptually I still thought that jeremyturner dot info is more appropriate for this site but I realized that I may be hindering my progress towards my ultimate goal. Jeremyturner.net has always redirected to this site, but we all know that redirects don’t add up to much on The Google. So I went through all of the necessary steps with my hosting provider, temporarily removing subsomains and redirects, and changing the redirect and DNS info with my domain registrar. I also used this plugin to do a super find/replace in my wordpress database, changing all instances of jeremyturner.info to jeremyturner.net. Worked like a charm and was much easier than going through the pages one by one to fix all of the broken links.

This is a good time to bring up the importance of a Google Webmaster Tools account. From here I was able to sumit a new sitemap for my new URL, and more imporantly I was able to easily identify the pages of my .info site that The Google had in it’s index. The reason this is important is that once I changed my domain, these links would no longer be valid. They would redirect to a 404 “page not found” page on my new site. Furthermore, none of the pages of my new site had been indexed yet so it would be like starting from scratch. This is where the magic of the 301 redirect and the .htaccess file come in. I’m not going to go in to a tutorial here, but the practical upshot is that I was able to identify all the pages previously indexed by The Google and redirect them individually to their corresponding new pages on the dot net site. Designating the redirect as a 301 tells the Googlebot that the page has moved permenantly and that The Google should update it’s index to reflect this. This is a much more responsible technique than just yanking your site and/or changing your URL, and insures the transition runs smoothly. I was able to continue on right where I left off with whatever minimal traction I had gained with The Google.

Speaking of traction, I’ve written previously about jeremyturner.com’s fall from grace because of mistakes made while updating the content of the site, among other things. I’m not sure if he even cares about this (he should be targeting queries like “staying in business” and such rather than his own name since his site has shifted focus) but I am sure happy to know that since my change from dot info to dot net I have effectively replaced his site in The Google’s SERP. Your results may vary though, as The Google will change your search results according to your search history if you are logged in with a Google account (like Gmail.)

I think the moral of the story here is obvious: you simply shouldn’t be using a .info TLD for your domain if you are trying to get anywhere with The Google.

Life Without JeremyTurner.com

So I was doing another vanity search for myself last week, and I was happy to find that I have conqured The Yahoo. Yahoo! And I’ve conquered MSN as well. Actually, this guy snuck up out of nowhere on MSN. I enjoy the fact that a lot of the Jeremy Turner’s on The Google seem to have an artistic bent, even if I find there work to be trite and without any redeeming qualities whatsoever. And I feel kind of bad beating Jeremy Turner Photographer to the number one spot, but only kind of. Bittersweet is my favorite kind of chocolate, so I will have to settle for it’s taste in victory as well.

So when I went to do the search on The Google there I was, still at number twelve (and thirteen). Same old… wait. Somethings missing. Where is JeremyTurner.com? Um, ok it’s not here anywhere. I typed the url directly in to my browser and was quickly redirected to a Wordpress blog titled Start a Business and Keep It Running for 10 Years, last updated October 19 with the post “Don’t Buy a Trashcan!” Seriously?

Evidently Jeremy Turner of happyballs.com fame has started a blog. I can’t help but think that my last post had something to do with his newfound interest in blogging. If that is the case however, I am saddened that I did not hear from him prior to his newfound interest in our URL. Funny, the only business advice on the site is not to buy an $80 trash can. Sound advice I suppose, but I’m sure he’s learned more in his ten years of antenna ballin’ so I look forward to hearing what more he has to say on the subject of small business longevity. At least now he is creating content that is close to his heart, but I would still suggest that he read this post on 43Folders about what makes a really good blog.What’s even more amusing, especially within the context of the narrow focus of this site, is that by updating his site he has effectively committed SERP-icide, at least on The Google and MSN. The Yahoo still has him listed at number six. I had to do a search for jeremyturner.com on The Google to get this:

SEO Tips for Jeremy “Happyballs” Turner

1. Making your home page into a 302 redirect to a sub-page of your site may have unexpected results, especially to the fickle and ever changing whims of The Google. I can not recommend this method for changing the content of your site. I don’t know anything about keeping a business running for ten years, but I do know that keeping a url for ten years and then suddenly changing it may not have the positive results you would hope for. I have no idea if you can undo the damage to your SERP ranking, but I would suggest ditching the redirect and instead put a link to your blog on the jeremyturner.com home page.

2. Your URL should relate, in some way, to the content on your page. Since the blog isn’t really about you, rather about small business success, I would recommend posting the blog at a new URL with a more relevant name that people who are searching for your content (how to build a sucessfull small business) might recognize as useful, or even something indirectly related to the site, like eightydollartrashcan.com or dont buyatrashcan.com or since it’s the title of the blog StartABusinessAndKeepItRunningFor10Years.com. And then advertise. Contact me, we can talk.

Lest this site take the tone of an all consuming vendetta against Jeremy “Happyballs” Turner, this will hopefully be the last post regarding this particular Jeremy. Unless of course he decides to contact me and doesn’t mind me talking about it. I think I should be more concerned with Jeremy “Woodcarver” Turner. Scary stuff man. Scary.

Holy crap! Jeremy Turner-Abstract Artist has updated his site too! No more broken links. I sincerely hope he heard about my efforts to defame him and responded accordingly, but I doubt it. Unfortunately the quality of the artwork now being displayed has seriously degraded the quality of the website. My vote is to bring back the broken links.

Hello mirror, this is Jeremy Turner and I have a question. Why? Seriously, what the hell is this? In case you don’t want to bother following the link to jeremyturner.com, let me just describe it to you. It’s sole content is a picture of a bug-eyed dog with the accompanying copy “You don’t have to be crazy to work here, but it sure helps!” Seriously, why even bother? Why register jeremyturner.com every year, for only one year, like two days before it expires? I know this is happening because I paid almost twenty bucks to GoDaddy.com to have them purchase it for me the moment it expired. And just when I got my hopes up. BAM! Another year of torture. At least change the picture once in a while.

A more pertinent question might be why, why does The Google rank this page so freakin’ high? Today jeremyturner.com the number three result for jeremy turner. Just goes to show you what kind of influence a TLD (”Top Level Domain” like .com or .org, as opposed to the lowly .info) will get you, even if all you have to show the world is a ripped-off image from an online greeting card company. Hey Jeremy, The early-2000s called and they want their Photoshop gimmick back!

So who is this other Jeremy Turner? What do I know about him? From checking the registration info for the domain I found an @happyballs.com email. Happyballs.com is the “The” Antennaball Superstore. According to the “About Us” on happyballs.com, Jeremy Turner co-founded happyballs.com with his wife and their dog, “Rascal.” Not nearly as exciting as you’d expect, but obviously dude was on the “ball” when it comes to registering domains, otherwise happyballs.com would not be nearly as SFW as it is now. And damn if he didn’t find his niche. I wonder if antenna balls are recession proof?

I never really understood the appeal of antenna balls. I mean sure, I “get” that people think they are cute, but I always thought that their sole reason for existing was to be stolen by bored teenagers. Go ahead and keep that virtual shopping cart filled with antenna balls and denial. “Oh how cute, this GI Jack (Green Hat) antenna ball totally won’t get stolen the minute I leave my car in the Trader Joe’s parking lot!” At HappyBalls.com, you can fill your life with adorable little styrofoam disappointments, all sure to end up flaked with dirt weed, crammed in to the backpack of a 14 year old skateboarder from the apartment building down the street. And when the owner of the Forester you’re parked next to drops her groceries and asks just what the hell are you doing on your back scraping your arms underneath their car, will you have the courage to tell her?

In a way Jeremy, you are an inspiration. I’ve clicked on the link for this site again and again, first in amusement then in frustration, then again to research this post. If you are reading, please don’t take me too seriously. I’m sure you are a nice guy and we do share the same faddish surname. Happyballs.com is acutally an OK site, which is what what makes jeremyturner.com even more of a disgrace. Your story is the great American “move to Rancho Cucamonga and start a small-business in your garage” success story. Your use of our URL is a great American FAIL. Do know that I sincerely wish you would do something, anything more with our URL than you are doing now. Feel free to take that bug-eyed dog off of your site and post something worthwhile. Even if it’s just a new picture, or better yet a link to my site. Thanks.

My Blog, Your Phone

This is Jeremy Turner, and I’ve been slacking off a bit on the blog posts the last two weeks. One of the reasons for this is that I am now an iPhone carrying member of the doucherati (I hoped that I had coined the term, but was slapped in the face with yet another domain that’s being squandered). After a month of paralyzing pre-buyers remorse—Do I really need this? Will I use it? Is it worth the price? Will I be a total douche afterwards?—it’s taken less than a week for me not to be able to imagine my life without it. Pathetic, I know but that’s just how I roll. Besides, I’ve gone far too long without being able to tune out the world and play Tetris at a moments notice. It was the only thing my last PDA ended up being any good for.

Another thing I can’t imagine is viewing websites on the damn thing. I mean, it’s cool and all that you can see “real” websites on your “phone”, however all the zooming in, out, scroll left right, etc., makes me dizzy. I am an information junkie, and this is just too much work. That is why sites like The Google, Yellowbook.com, and others have either created iPhone optimized versions of their websites especially for the mobile version of Safari. And now I am happy to announce that I this functionality on my site as well.

The Wordpress plugin is called iWPhone and it’s a combination plugin and theme. Install the plugin and when users visit you from their super slick little pocket machine they get an optimized version of your content. Pretty neat if you ask me. And a whole lot easier than creating a whole new “mobile” version of your website. Check it out for yourself, if you are lucky enough to be near an iPhone. Just fire up Mobile Safari and type in jeremyturner.net. I know this isn’t going to help me out as far as my Google ranking, but I just think it’s neat and thought I would share.

EDIT: There’s another plugin called WPtouch that accomplishes pretty much the same thing, but seems to have more features, like the option to view the site normally if you choose. I will be playing with both of these for a while so I can’t say for sure which one you’ll be seeing.

Wordpress SEO

Great article on basically everything that I’m doing to try and get this blog rolling. I definitely used this article as a blueprint before I veered dangerously off course following my own peculiarities. I even imagined myself writing a post like this to school y’all after I became master of the blogosphere, but alas it’s already been written so this is all you get. I may be revisiting some of the suggested techniques and plugins though.

Strange Returns From The Google

Hi there. Jeremy Turner here, and my ranking on The Google is officially confusing. In my last status update post I was happily sitting at number eleven on The Google, so close to the first page I could smell the stink that is jeremyturner.com. In preparation for an update on some of the mistaken identity emails I’ve received to join a fantasy football league, I entered the query jeremy turner into google on my computer at work (on my scheduled lunch break, of course) and much to my surprise there I was, results number eight and nine, sitting right below that open sore of a website, jeremyturner.com. I was all excited to share the news, so when I fired up my laptop at home to write the update, I did a quick search and found that my rank was right were I had left it, on page two. Weird. So I went back this morning and checked again at work (of course well before my “shift” started) and what do you know—I’m actually beating jeremyturner.com! This makes perfect sense to me since I am actually publishing content while, well go ahead and check it out for yourself, but suffice to say he’s not doing much with the site. Not sure why there is a discrepancy, but it sure makes me feel better about surfing the internet at work!

If anybody out there is actually reading this, can you explain why this might be? I’m in the same basic geographic area, on the same network (Comcast), and the results are the same wether or not I’m logged in to The Google or not. Curiouser and curiouser…
