Over the years I have photographed many car dealerships and they can actually be a real challenge to shoot. Most are multi brand dealerships so if for example the image is to be used to promote Nissan then you need to ensure that there are minimal cars from other brands.

You also have to be aware of promotional signage and be prepared to really work the image in Photoshop. This can include removing or changing the colour of walls, lights and so much more. For instance in the shot of the Nissan showroom below I had to remove a huge lampost that was in the middle of the shot and rebuild a car that was cut in half by it. If you look closely you will also notice that the showroom on the far right is the same as the showroom in the Skoda shot, also below, but with red lights instead of green!

I had the pleasure of photographing the showroom of Manning Valley Motors in Taree last week so I though I would take the opportunity to show you a few shots from that shoot as well. I also photographed their workshops and new service reception area.

When I got the call from Trish at Flourish Tents And Events asking me to come and photograph her tents at dusk I wasn’t really sure what to expect but to say I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement. I arrived at the first spectacular location which was on a ridge overlooking lush green paddocks and Bago Bluff in the background to see one of her very glamorous tents, styled and ready to go.

There was this gorgeous warm evening light with the sun gradually dropping down so I took the opportunity to shoot the first image you see below before the sun disappeared. I love the glow through the canvas on the inside of the tent from the sun.

Next up when the sun had dropped below the horizon I shot the feature image you see at the top of the page. This was followed by a quick dash down onto the paddocks where 3 more tents were set up. Unfortunately we were a long way from any mains power so all we had were a few candles and small led lights. It was such a clear night it seemed to take forever until you could see the tents starting to glow and then I could see they were all glowing different colours because of the color temperature of the different light sources. Fortunately I was shooting in raw so I could adjust for each one later in Photoshop and blend them together to give this result.

This last image was the final shot of the night and it really was well and truly night at this stage. With an exposure time of 30 seconds and the only light from some candles and small led torches I ended up bringing in my car and using the sidelights from that to give a bit of fill light and the end result looks really good.

The client loved the images and they looked really great in her display at a recent Wedding Expo and on her promotional material.

The Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP) has just completed one of the most ambitious, not-for-profit photographic projects undertaken in Australia to commemorate the unsung heroes of World War II and I was proud to have been part of it. My assistant Alison and I spent yesterday photographing surviving WWII veterans with my portable studio set up in Port Panthers in Port Macquarie and at the Wauchope RSL.

The Reflections: Honouring Our World War II Veterans project aims to collect a photographic record of returned WWII servicemen and women living in Australia for the RSL and Australian War Memorial archives. The photos will eventually end up as a gallery and book which will form part of a national archive at the Australian War Memorial.

All the photographers involved are donating their time and talent to preserve this important part of Australia’s history and what better time to capture our living heroes than now, and commemorate 100 years of the Anzac tradition and the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII.

It was a privilege and delight to be able to photograph these veterans and when you consider that most of them are in their nineties they are all amazingly sprightly and mentally pretty sharp too and some were down right cheeky! The wonderfully dapper looking gentleman in the right of the 3 images will be 100 years old in February for example.

With the project now finished I feel very proud and honoured to have taken part in such an ambitious and worthy cause.

For those that are interested these were shot on my Nikon D810 with a Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 at f5.6. Light was from one Elinchrom Octa and a reflector to fill.

Ocean Club Resort near Port Macquarie are one of my favorite clients and I’ve lost track of the number of great photo shoots we have had since their opening. Ocean Club Resort is a five star luxury retirement village with some amazing leisure facilities.

I shoot for their ad agency, AMG, who always come up with an interesting and comprehensive brief. A lot of other creative agencies could actually learn a lot from AMG when it comes to telling a photographer what they need. They also like it when I go off script and do a little free range photography. Quite often these “free range” images even end up in some of their ads like these!

One of the first photo shoots I did for Ocean Club Resort a few years ago was a dusk shot across their spectacular pool back to the club house. It has been used in so many ads and TV commercials that if you live on the Mid North Coast you will almost certainly have seen it and if not well here it is:-

It is amazing how much the trees have grown in just a couple of years when you compare the two. Here is the latest version.

When you are shooting dusk photography it really is all about the light and this was also a classic example of hurry up and wait. I was in position early with the camera set up ready to shoot and settled in to wait until the lights from inside the club house really started to show. Once this shot was captured I also managed to rush round and shoot a couple of other angles of the very glamorous club house before that perfect period of light disappeared.

I love this shooting place and will be sad when the project finally comes to a conclusion although I hope there will be a few more photo shoots there before that happens. I’ve just got a sneak peak of the new Christmas ad campaign featuring one of these images and it looks amazing.

All these images were captured in raw at f11 using 200 iso. The camera used was a Nikon D810 with a 14-24mm f2.8 lens being held steady on a carbon fibre Manfrotto 055 tripod.

I’ve just had a flight up to South West Rocks for some aerial photography. The job was to shoot The Rocks Fair Shopping Centre for CBRE. We headed up in the trusty Cessna 152. It’s slow, cramped and uncomfortable but it’s absolutely perfect for aerial photography because it is so slow and of course because of it’s high wing.

We flew circuits of the centre at 1000ft while I hung out the window shooting. I tend to shoot aerials in manual as no matter the camera their meters can be fooled. Especially when you have a subject with a bright, reflective roof such as this had. I also shoot with a fairly fast shutter speed because of the vibration and movement you get in small planes. These were shot at 1/1250th of a second.

I use the Nikon D810 for the majority of my aerial shoots because of it’s amazing resolution and great raw files. This time it was teamed with my pin sharp Nikon 24-70mm f2.8.

I love doing aerial photography as the perspective you get while flying low and slow is amazing as shown by this last shot. If you have ever wondered what the historic Trial Bay Gaol near South West Rocks looks like from the air here it is……….

If you’ve ever driven on the Pacific Highway between Sydney and Brisbane you will definitely have seen some of Jim Pearson’s huge truck fleet in their distinctive red and white livery. Jim Pearson Transport, is highly renowned in the trucking industry and on the east coast of Australia for its professionalism and innovation. They specialise in the transportation of fast-moving consumer goods and large volume goods to leading retailers such as Woolworths throughout Queensland and New South Wales.

I’ve photographed both Jim and his father, also called Jim Pearson and the founder of the company, several times before for clients ranging from Freightliner to the Climate Commission. This time it was for an advertising campaign to be seen in the trucking press for Hi-Tec Oils. With a couple of Freightliner’s finest as a backdrop in his incredibly busy yard Jim was lit with a large Elinchrom Octa soft box while underexposing the background slightly. Shot with a Nikon D810 and 24-70mm f2.8 lens

I have just photographed a stunning home for one of Australia’s biggest tile companies. When you shoot as many great homes as I do you tend to photograph them in a similar style. So it was nice to shift the focus, as it were, and concentrate on the floor. And what a floor……..

The main floor tiles ran all the way from the front of the house, down the hallway, through the living areas and out to the entertaining area. This gave the home a lovely flow and they were amazingly comfortable to walk on too. There were also some gorgeous floor and wall tiles in all the bathrooms including some really nice feature tiles.

A challenging shoot in some ways trying to balance the bright light outside with the interior ambiance especially while keeping detail in all the reflective surfaces but when the national marketing manager of Amber Tiles sends you an email saying “Pictures are great!!!!!!!!!” you know you nailed that job.

For the photographers out there who may be interested these were shot on a Nikon D810 with a 14-24mm at f11. Lighting was one Elinchrom Rotalux OctaBox to act as a fill and balanced with the ambient light. Exposures were bracketed and it was all edited in Photoshop.

I had the pleasure to photograph this stunning home this week. Just minutes from town this really impressive and unashamedly luxurious country home sits on five pristine acres, with stables, dressage arena and lush paddocks. Not to mention it’s beautiful swimming pool, tennis court, summer house, cricket pitch and so much more.

It really is an absolutely unique home. For those home hunters with lifestyle in mind and $1.2 million to spend I’m sure that Greg at McGrath Port Macquarie would be very happy to show you around.

For the photographers out there a few technical details. Taken with a Nikon D750 with a Nikon 16-35mm lens. A single SB910 speedlite balanced with the ambient light was used. All images were shot in RAW and processed in Photoshop.

I’m very proud to be able to have McDonald’s head office as a major client. I regularly shoot any new or renovated restaurants up and down the coast. This one was really special as it is one of the very first of their new style restaurants and luckily it was just a short drive up the highway to Coffs Harbour.

With a style that harks back to a traditional American burger joint it is like no McDonald’s you have ever been in before. Gone are the plastic booths and furniture. It now features an eclectic range of fun furniture, groovy art work, ceramic tiles, timber features and very stylish lighting throughout. It definitely feels more like a very trendy restaurant than a normal McDonald’s.

Photographing it was a real challenge though. We picked 10.00am on a Monday morning as it was usually a fairly quite time. However obviously the new look is proving really popular as it was frantically busy. I was on location for nearly 4 hours for what should have been a fairly straightforward shoot but with so many people coming and going it was tough to clear each area for photography and of course I did not want to disturb the customers. A young mothers group had seated themselves right underneath a cool looking plant wall feature you can see in the feature image while their children played in the playground. Two hours later and after many coffees they left and with the help of the management I could shoot that area.

I was really pleased with the results and so were McDonald’s as they asked permission to send the images to their head office in the USA to be used to sell the concept there. If you are traveling up the highway make sure you call in, grab a coffee and check it out.

A few details about the photography. As you can imagine it had to be set up and shot fast so I just used a Nikon D750 because of it’s amazing raw files and an SB910 speedlight to act as fill in combination with the ambient light.
