I keep my contacts sync'd between my laptop, GMail and mobile phone via ... GMail.

On my laptop(s), I use iSync on MacOSX and conduit on Linux. They both provide two way sync.

On my phone, I use "Nokia for Exchange" since Google is nice enough to provide an Exchange compatible interface. NFE is configured to sync calendars and contacts.

Unfortunately, for some reasons, NFE or GMail won't sync contacts phone number if the phone label is set to "Other" or maybe just something else than "Mobile", "Home" or "Work" ... So one day, all you have left on your phone is an email for your contacts !@#

Of course, AddressBook and GMail don't provide any convenient way to modify all entries except that AddressBook database is an SQLite3 file.

Better Google Docs outline with a simple CSS

This is a stupid "productivity suite" post. ERK.

No matter how Google Docs or OpenOffice may be easy to use, open, blabla, I always find myself frustrated with the default style, the non-existent outlining capabilities or the lack of semantic meaning in documents ... Go HTML5, GO !@#

Anyway, if you find the different heading levels barely distinguishable, the custom CSS feature comes in handy.

Go to "Edit" > "Edit CSS" and paste this :

I'm pretty sure you can find some better CSS out there, Google or community provided. I couldn't find any repository for styles nor any kind of "global" CSS option for all my documents.

Vim : from snippets-emu to snipmate, with love.

Being both lazy and a vim user, as I wrote a while ago, I like using

I've been using Felix Ingram's snippets-emu vim plugin for quite a while
now :

Feature wise, this is an very nice plugin, however the implementation
and snippets obsolescence have slowly been making it less usable despite
my frequent hacking into Django and python snippets.
As of yesterday, I'm now using Michael Sanders's snipmate plugin :

and the additional django specific snippet set from Rob Hudson and Jason

While being iso-functional, snipmate provides some nice improvements
over snippets-emu :
- a better user-experience : snippet expansion just works (tm)
- cleaner code expansion : as shown in the screenshot, snippets-emu
snippet expansion outputs some annoying mark tags on error. Snipmate
output is much cleaner, and leave valid, non-blocking code even if you
leave the snippet as-is
- cleaner snippet definition syntax, as shown in the screenshot
- the project is still active
- there are some nice "community" provided sets of snippets
- snipmate is meant to be almost compatible with textmate sets

Thanks again to the authors of these remarkable plugins !

The Force is strong with GMail and while I use it from Mutt / offlineimap most of the time, I still miss the fixed width font in the Web interface (not to mention a portable GPG support ...). Google provided a "Fixed width font" Labs feature and then withdrew it in Feb 2009, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. There are many ways to improve GMail when you are using Firefox through GreaseMonkey scripts and/or user custom CSS : fixed width font, layout and even GPG support. However, if you like using Chrome/Chromium, you're out of luck. No GreaseMonkey, no user custom CSS, nothing, until yesterday.

Yesterday was released the latest "dev channel" Chromium/Chrome update :

As stated in the Chromium google code issue tracker
(http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=2393), the user
stylesheet support is enabled via the "--enable-user-stylesheet" switch
in the "5.0.356.X" releases.
Just create a "User Stylesheets" folder in your Google Chrome profile
datadir (depending on your OS) and create a "Custom.css" file there
containing :

Then, start Google Chrome with the additional "--enable-user-stylesheet"

Le trésor de la langue française informatisé

Ça faisait un bout de temps que je cherchais sans vraiment forcer un
moyen d'accéder vite fait au fameux dictionnaire en ligne TLFI.

Les navigateurs récents permettent de rajouter des moteurs de recherche
via une interface conviviale, un fichier de config, etc. (Chercher
'opensearch' sur wikipedia). Le soucis du TLFI, c'est que c'est un poil
vieillot et donc des gens sympas du CNRS (CNRTL précisément) ont
travaillé à monter une interface un peu plus pratique.

Oranges et lutins perdus

Chez moi, à la campagne, j'ai un abonnement ADSL Orange "réseau étendu", ce qui veut dire 512k, jusque dans les champs ravitaillés par les corbeaux.

J'ai aussi une LiveBoite Moisie (Orange LiveBox Mini Sagem), qui potentiellement fait modem, routeur avec 2 ethernet et un AP Wifi. Rien de magique, mais c'est censé marcher facilement et efficacement.
Évidemment, ça marche mal et donc j'ai viré tous les services de la LiveBoite et installé un routeur qui à la bon goût de fournir également un proxy cache HTTP, un cache DNS, etc.
La Liveboite ne fournit pas de mode "bridge" permettant au routeur placé derrière elle d'obtenir directement une IP publique, donc le routeur est placé dans la "DMZ" de la Liveboite, avec une adresse genre 192.168.x.x ...

Comme décidément, chez Orange, ya plein de choses qui marchent mal, j'évite aussi d'utiliser leur service DNS, qui est bien plus lent qu'OpenDNS ou Google.
Malheureusement, je remarqué dernièrement que mon routeur ne voulait plus envoyer de mails via le SMTP Orange (smtp.orange.fr) avec ça dans les logs :

Il semblerait que ces adresses changent de temps en temps, donc la solution la plus simple reste de laisser le DNS Orange (celui de la LiveBoite, 192.168.1.1 par défaut) dans la config de votre routeur.
Ho, et toutes les adresses ne sont pas valides non plus, donc ça ne sert à rien d'en garder une seule.
Il faudra aussi recharger votre MTA et votre firewall pour que tout remarche correctement.

Digging out some photographies and cameras.

As I was reading about the latest Leica M9 and browsing through Leica fans pages on Flickr (check moaan for instance), I felt the need to dig through shelves and boxes for my cameras and pictures.
Here are some of them, pour le panache. "Oh! Hey! Ooooh."

Agfamatic 100 (Point&shoot)

This is the model I used and broke, as a kid. I found this model some while ago. I do not use it anymore as film is not being sold anymore. The disposable flash bulb was called the "magicube" : a little cube capable of 4 shots. Very cute. I am a bit astounded by the sharpness of my old prints. Surprisingly, in good light conditions, results were good !

Canon AE-1 P (SLR)

A friend of mine lent me this camera 10 or 15 years ago and I rarely lent it back to him over the years ! This is a fantastic, robust and dead-simple camera, for which you can easily find cheap used lenses (here 24mm, 50mm, 135mm, 50-200mm). I use it mostly for black and white portrait shooting (135mm <3).

Ricoh GRD (Point&shoot)

I bought this small, (wide angle) 24mm prime lens camera to live in my pocket. While I don't like the term "serious compact" or "expert point&shoot", it still remains a very capable and nice camera. I love how it provides easy exposure compensation, bracketing, macro ... I use it very often for close macro, landscapes, city and in-building shooting.

Nikon D90 (DSLR)

My first DSLR. Not too cheap, not professional, I love it. I bought a couple lens and now have great pleasure using it. You can't technically miss a picture with such gear : always on-focus, fast, sensitive, ...

PS : looks like Picasa is really killing the pictures with way too much compression :-/

Dernièrement, Marie-Luce Penchard, Ministre de l'Outre-Mer, déclarait dans un meeting en Guadeloupe :

« Je n'ai envie de servir qu'une population, la population guadeloupéenne.
Il y a des enjeux financiers considérables. Nous en sommes à plus de 500
millions d'euros et ça me ferait mal de voir cette manne financière quitter
la Guadeloupe au bénéfice de la Guyane, de la Réunion, de la Martinique. »

Évidemment, elle est plus ou moins originaire du coin. Évidemment, elle prend la parole dans un meeting. On n'atteint pas le niveau du grave hebdomadaire, tout juste l'habituel ridicule quotidien. Heureusement les réactions de l'UMP et du PS aident à profiter de ce délicieux FAIL, dans un joli capharnaüm.
Dans les grandes lignes, l'opposition s'insurge de la partialité de la ministre et la majorité sauf Balkany accuse l'opposition de jouer la polémique sans pour autant tenter d'expliquer son discours. Génial.

Axel Urgin (PS Réunion) :

« Ces propos sont aussi affligeants qu'inadmissibles dans la bouche d'une
ministre censée être en charge de tout l'Outre-mer, c'est-à-dire de onze
collectivités et non d'une seule »

J'aime bien le ridicule. J'ai une affection particulière pour les pubs débiles et les petits papiers des marabouts. On les trouve comme des perles et on les garde avec soi longtemps, on les oublie et un jour, ces petits trésors remontent à la surface ...

Aujourd'hui, je viens de retrouver échouée sur mon téléphone cette photo prise il y a quelques mois dans une pharmacie ...

À y regarder de plus près, on se pose quand même des questions.

"La force de 75 huîtres dans un comprimé".

Hmm. La *force* d'une huître.

OK. C'est vrai que c'est pas facile à ouvrir mais quand même, c'est un peu ... enfin ... c'est de la morve.

"Stimulant physique et intellectuel".

OK, les huîtres sont probablement plus intelligentes que les moules mais quand même, c'est ... toujours de la morve une huître.

"22 euros"

La boîte de 30 comprimés, soit quand même la force 2250 huîtres, pour 22 euro, c'est clairement mieux que la bourriche de 10kg à 50/100 euros, sans avoir à ouvrir les sales bestioles. Bon point pour OSTRIN Q10.

Q10, taurine, vitamines, anti-oxydants et autres minéraux de haute valeur

Alors effectivement, le machin à base de concentré d'huîtres est bourré de trucs bien pour l'énergie. La plupart ne provenant de l'huître d'ailleurs (du melon par exemple). HAAA, ya plein de taurine. En fait, à la caféine près, c'est du Redbull en comprimé en fait. C'est vrai que Redbull pourrait dire "la force de 75 taureaux dans un comprimé" et ça claquerait pas mal. Même 0,75 taureau, ça suffirait.

"Ginseng"

Au dos de la boîte, on peut lire que le machin contient du ginseng. Haa. Les coquins. Du Ginseng pour la libido. Hmm. Oui, mais pourquoi l'huître alors, parce que c'est toujours ... de la morve une huître.

Hmm, j'aime. J'aime le ridicule.

De tout temps, les huîtres ont eu la réputation d’être non seulement un régal pour les gourmands, mais

aussi d'améliorer les prestations. De plus l’huître a pour l’être humain bien d’autres propriétés positives.

Cet animal marin est, en effet, l’un des plus puissants au monde. Malgré le fait qu’elle ne dispose que

d’un petit muscle d’à peine un centimètre, l’huître est capable de garder ses coquilles fermées avec une

particulier. La teneur élevée en glycogène nourrit le muscle et lui fournit l’énergie nécessaire à son effort.

Le glycogène est transformé en glucose : la source d’énergie et l’aliment du muscle. Le glucose est brûlé

et libère, lors de ce processus, un déchet appelé acide lactique. La teneur élevée en taurine, qui se trouve

dans le liquide visqueux entourant l’huître, élimine ensuite l’acide lactique. Voilà d’où vient la force de

Playing with Nikon D90 & Nikkor 70-210mm 4-5.6 AF-D

Recently, as I was looking on Ebay for a cheap lens to shoot some sports and portraits, 70-200 or such, with decent results, I found a Nikkor 70-210mm 4-5.6 AF-D.
Reviews about this lens, and eventually its use with modern amateur reflexes are rare (1999 huh ...), so I guess these few words could help some of us.

For 50€, it was more or less a $100 better deal than the usual Ebay price. I'm not a photo-geek, so I'm just looking for a reasonable price/quality ratio, not the sharpest, stabilized, fixed aperture, expensive and all plastic lens.

This AF-D lens was made before 1999 and still works like a charm, thanks to its solid-but-heavy all-metal body. Good. Despite its humble specifications (4-5.6, ...), it's said to have a very likeable fast focus and decent distortion, color rendition and sharpness across the field.
As all Nikkor AF(-D), this lens is compatible with the Nikon D90 body : autofocus, aperture (ring has to be locked to the smallest aperture - highest value - 32 here), metering, ...

My conclusion : it works just fine on D90, it's indeed really fast at focusing and provides very pleasant results even under the poor conditions I shot the picture above.
Get one if you find one for $100!

How-to: restoring Grub2 on Debian

Debian recently chose to switch from grub1 (now grub-legacy) to grub2 (now grub-pc).
Those who upgraded their Debian Unstable/Sid recently might have suffered from annoying "Error 15" on boot, mostly due to grub2 being unable to read its files.

Here's the classic mount-chroot-restore method to fix that kind of problems.

1. fetch pre-requisites
You need a bootable Debian Install medium (CD, USB stick, network boot, etc), the smallest (business card) will do.

2. boot your media

3. choose "rescue mode", select lang and keyboard and switch to vt2 (Ctrl-Alt-F2)

4. mount your disk(s) partitions


$ cat /proc/partitions
...
$ modprobe ext2 # load whatever you need, ext2, xfs, etc
$ mount /dev/hda2 /mnt  # your root partition first
$ mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/boot # your boot partition if one
$ mount /dev/hda5 /mnt/usr # ...etc
$ mount -o bind  /dev /mnt/dev/
$ mount -o bind  /proc /mnt/proc
$ grub-setup --force '(hd0)' # this will install grub with some warnings
...
$ reboot

5. you're done !

How-to build and install QGIS from SVN on Debian in a bandwidth-friendly way.

Quantum GIS, aka QGIS (http://qgis.org) has been orphaned out from Debian repos for various reasons.
Of course, you can find many unofficial binary packages around the web, however they are likely to fail on some unmatched runtime dependency ...
QGIS people made it simple for us to build packages on our own bu providing a convenient "debian/" directory in the source tree.

The official installation guide (http://www.qgis.org/wiki/Installation_Guide#Building_Debian_packages) provides enough information to build the package in a semi-automatic way :

"/!\ *Note:* If dpkg-buildpackage complains about unmet build dependencyies you can install them using apt-get and re-run the command."

Boring ... Why not fetch dependencies from the debian/control.xxx file ?

PS: this method is not QGIS exclusive and could be used with many out-of-debian softwares that provides a working debian/ directory.
Who has no bandwidth constraints as I have should consider the much better cowbuilder (apt://cowbuilder or http://wiki.debian.org/cowbuilder). Those incredible tools provides nice wrappers to build packages in clean hardlinked-cow'd chroot, thus not polluting your environment with otherwise-useless build-deps packages.

Vim tips of the day : snippets, autocomplete and menus

I love being lazy when it comes to text editing. So, I loved
OmniComplete and Snippets plugins :

- snipMate : http://www.vim.org/scripts/script.php?script_id=2540 :
TextMate snippets, the Vim way (very good, easy textmate -> snipMate
conversion)
- snippetsEmu : http://www.vim.org/scripts/script.php?script_id=1318 :
just the same, older and probably a bit less reliable. Good anyway.

Vim is the kind of software you can learn everyday something about.
Today, I just found this new http://vim-fr.org site, which referenced
some neat plugins / options :

- ":set wildmenu" : simply another completion system for the Vim command
mode. Very nice and useful.

- AutoComplPop : http://www.vim.org/scripts/script.php?script_id=1879 :
this plugin simply enables the OmniComplete menu in insert mode, while
typing. Defaults settings are a bit intruding but can be changed
easily.

Working tiled and comfy on MacOSX : X11, dwm, urxvt, Terminus

(Easiest thing to do is not to use MacOSX in the first place, however
for those among us who actually like to work with terminals, text mode
apps and funky tiling window managers and all those tools that actually
suck less, things were made easy).

For those who just want to tile some windows, Quicksilver and some
applescript could do.

Get Prerequisites

MacOSX Leopard. I think one could get this working on Tiger, but
not sure.

X11 packages from Leopard (default install, X11User et X11SDK
packages from the additionnal softwares folder on the install DVD) or
XQuartz. I had
some problems with Xquartz 2.4.0 so I wouldn't recommend it.

Macports. Macports provides
lots of brilliant softwares, among them urxvt and terminus-font.
Macports requires Xcode.

dwm sources from the mercurial repo or the tarball, see here. dwm is, well, you know
dwm.

Test your setup :

Launch "X11.app" from Application/Utilities. From xterm, type in "xev"
and press your Option/Alt keys to obtain their keypres. You will need
those keypres later to define the dwm modifier key.

Install

dwm configuration is done at compile time by editing the header file :


$ cd path/to/dwm
$ vi config/def.h
# edit to fit your needs, note modifier key
$ make

Then install the other apps :


$ sudo port install rxvt-unicode
$ sudo port install terminus-font

At this point, Terminus font is not available in xfontsel, we need to do some
configuration.

Virtualbox allows you to run a lot of x86 OS virtual machines, mostly from a "virtual disk image", ie a file. On the other hand, it is now easy to setup a MacOSX / Debian dual boot, for us long time Linux lovers.
While both are convenient and working nicely, it's actually pretty difficult to get Virtualbox on MacOSX using the Linux raw disk partition as a VM. It can work though, with a little help from VMWare ...

2009-09-17 : Now without VMWare, thanks to Steve Cheng workaround in the comments (dd'ing the first GPT 40 blocks to the VMDK file).

REMEMBER : this is said to be experimental and dangerous ! Try at your own risk, but backup first !

Requirements

a working MacOSX / Debian Linux dual boot setup (using rEFIt), see http://blog.jardinmagique.info/2009/07/debian-linux-on-macbook-install-notes.html for instance

Partition #4 is the swap. I won't use it, so I'll just keep #3.

As we need to access the actual raw disks, we need to change permissions on /dev/disk0* to gain the write bit (I think write is only needed for the linux partition, but read is mandatory for disk0 and diskOs3)

Create the virtual machine with Virtualbox GUI

Launch Virtualbox and create a new Debian (whatever you like actually) VM using the new registered disk image (VMNAME.vmdk here). You may also go to advanced setup and change the harddisk controller from IDE to SATA so that Debian won't have to bother between sda / hda naming, depending on your machine. I guess all Mactel have SATA disks now, not sure.

Once your machine is created, you can try to launch it and see ... FAIL. Well, Grub is OK, kernel is loading but then "Unknown partition table", "Unable to mount rootfs", ...

Using a custom MBR is not working for now, it seems that on MacOSX host, Virtualbox only supports Bootcamp'ed Vista raw disk partition. See http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/1461

Use VMWare to produce a working xxx-pt.vmdk file

Of course, we could all use VMWare Fusion from the beginning, but I just don't like them. Anyway, download and install VMWare Fusion trial with command line tools.

Once installed, create a VM within WMWare, following http://fearandloath.us/vmware-fusion-bootcamp-partition.html advices

Basically, run


$ cd "/Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/"
$ ./vmware-rawdiskCreator create /dev/disk0 3  /Users/USERNAME/VMNAME.vmwarevm/VMNAME.vmdk ide

This will create the same files as before, but this time


$ ls -l /Users/USERNAME/VMNAME.vmwarevm/VMNAME-pt.vmdk
-rw-------@ 1 USERNAME  USERNAME  -      32256  9 jul 19:52 VMNAME-pt.vmdk

Once you get there, backup your existing Virtualbox generated -pt.vmdk file and copy the VMWare there instead (make sure vbox and fusion are off)


$ cd ~/Library/VirtualBox/HardDisks/
$ mv VMNAME-pt.vmdk VMNAME-pt.vmdk.vbox
$ cp /Users/USERNAME/VMNAME.vmwarevm/VMNAME-pt.vmdk .

You can notice the difference in size between the two of them


$ ls -l ~/Library/VirtualBox/HardDisks/

Now, finally, you can boot the VM. Grub and the kernel should understand the partition table and mount the rootfs. Enjoy !

Troubleshooting

Many things can go wrong, especially because I began to look at this a while ago, so some errors could have found their way in.

permissions : you need to understand UNIX permissions and ownership to fix perms on disks and files. I think this could be made a little bit safer by not letting the write bit on all partitions (disk0s3 only should do).

permissions again : permissions on disks are only set until reboot, you may have to fix a service otherwise Virtualbox will complain that disks are not accessible (VMWare prompts you for an admin password ... Clever.)

Grub, MBR, GPT, rEFIt mess : I never took time to read about EFI, GPT, MBR, etc. This could be problematic for you, however, if you already have a working dualboot setup, it should be OK (try gptsync from rEFIt otherwise).

Moreover, it would be nice to understand what VMWare is writing in this -pt.vmdk file to make it understandable by the Linux Kernel or maybe just what Virtualbox is doing wrong ...

Rhaaa, c'est moche. Il fait beau, c'est l'été et pourtant, je ne fais que me plaindre.

Je ne suis pas un grand fana de gadgets tendance, ni de téléphones portables en particulier. Mon coté geek se gavant d'autres nourritures plus consistantes, il m'arrive pourtant d'apprécier le coté pratique de certains gadgets actuels.

Par flemme, j'ai longtemps été fidèle à Nokia. Ainsi, j'ai apprécié l'utilisation d'un très classique 6230i, puis d'un 3110 Classic. J'ai utilisé souvent et beaucoup les fonctions de base, le lecteur MP3 ou le Tuner FM pour les trajets en vélo ou en métro jusqu'au boulot ... Pour le boulot et pour le reste, j'ai aussi beaucoup utilisé la fonction modem en bluetooth. Incroyablement pratiques, faciles à synchroniser sous Linux ou Mac, avec une durée de batterie largement suffisante pour tout faire.

À l'occasion d'un changement de fournisseur, j'ai acheté un Nokia E71, pour son clavier AZERTY et la possibilité de lire les mails ... Un peu de hype, toujours un Nokia, pas cher avec un nouvel abonnement. Je n'ai pas vraiment été surpris, il marche bien comme les autres. Vraiment, ça marche bien, on ne se pose pas trop de questions, tout fonctionne vite, bien et looongtemps. Parfait. En plus, ce sont les mêmes connecteurs (casque, chargeur et mémoire) que le 3110 ...

Pour des raisons de couvertures, j'ai ENCORE changé d'opérateur et en consultant les offres de l'opérateur B, je vois que vient de sortir un nouveau téléphone Android, le Samsung Galxy (ou GT-i7500).

Haaaaaa, que de chants doux à mes oreilles : un système Linux convivial, une intégration sympathique avec les trucs Google (que j'utilise donc c'est bien, hein ?), le tout vaguement propre et beau ... Je vois même que Ghantoos arrive à faire des trucs bien avec.

Bon, au final, après quelques semaines d'utilisation, voilà ce que j'en retiens :

- la batterie ne tient pas. Après 2 jours, dans 90% des cas, c'est mort. Au début, c'est pire ...

- le téléphone reboot tout seul. Pénible, il reste bloqué sur la saisie du PIN.

- il reste bloqué en "veille", écran noir, obligé de retirer la batterie ...

- les mises à jour se font par l'intermédiaire d'un logiciel Samsung qui ne fonctionne que sous des OS sales, donc ne se font pas chez moi ...

- le clavier virtuel est tout moisi par rapport à celui des iPod ou autre Tomtom que j'ai eu l'occasion d'utiliser.

- la housse fournie avec est trop petite et appuie sur les boutons quand on le glisse dedans, ridicule.

M*rde, si on ne peut pas compter sur son téléphone pour rester allumé, c'est moche.

D'un autre coté, le système Android est vraiment, pour de vrai, très sympathique et il semblerait que le travail de Samsung ne vaille pas celui de HTC ...

Comme Samsung ne permet pas les mises à jour "OTA" (Over The Air), je pense que je vais tester les ROM non officielles distribuées (genre Fatality et autres Drakaz), qui apparemment régleraient les problèmes, dès le retour du SAV. Haaa, là encore, je pourrais certainement écrire des pages d'insultes, verser des litres de bile ou hurler jusqu'à assourdissement, mais c'est l'été, il fait beau.

Hmm, j'aime bien regarder les fils RSS de tout un tas de blogs, disons,
"illustrés" : BD, photo, trucs marrants, maths, ... Bref, illustrés.

Pour ça, j'utilise généralement l'aggrégateur en ligne Google Reader,
mais aussi des planets voire des clients lourds, comme liferea, firefox
ou même le truc de mon téléphone portable (là, c'est méchamment pourri,
mais bon, passons).

Évidemment, le fin du fin, c'est quand les fils RSS contiennent le
contenu intégral de l'article posté, tout pareil à celui posté sur le
site même. Toutefois, tout comme le texte parfois tronqué (ha merci le
wordpress par défaut!@#), certains outils de blog utilisent des vignettes
d'une taille toute ridicule à la place de la taille "normale". Tss.

Tout ça, j'imagine pour économiser un peu de bande passante. Hmm.

Dans les mauvais élèves du moment, une grande partie de ceux qui sont
chez over-blog.com et aussi grandpapier.org, pourtant très sympathique.

Noise and vibrations, thanks Western Digital

I bought this Western Digital "Scorpio black" 320Go @7200krpm hard drive
to replace the default 120Go @5200krpm in my macbook.
The vendor reference is WD320BEKT SATA 2.5". Be careful when buying,
those BEKT don't have the free fall technology (look for BJKT).

Those drives have good reviews, they are cheap and well, easy to find
there.

Unfortunatly, despite the "WhisperDrive" technology, those drives are
actually very noisy. Not the classic high pitch annoying noise, but an
unpleasant vibration. I guess I could try to add some rubber grommets.

Despite the good overall performances (speed, heat, power saving), I
would not recommend this drive.

Debian Linux on Macbook install notes

I have this nice black rev3.1 Macbook running Leopard and as I changed
the default hard-drive with a faster, better, stronger one, I
(re)installed Debian Linux on it and took some notes.

Bottom lines :
- It works mostly just fine (even power management is OK)
- Debian amd64 works out of the box
- you don't need to tweak, compile a new kernel or anything this boring
now, with Debian Lenny
- you don't need bootcamp to dualboot MacOSX and Linux, just rEFIt and
one command line during install (gptsync). Nothing difficult, nothing
risky. Just one command.

There are actually a lot of existing tutorials but most of them are now
outdated or very confusing, so I went on editing the ones I found
relevant :

I'm a long time Mutt user and sometimes, well, it just don't feel right.
Especially when using IMAP, GPG, HTML messages, ..., the unsane defaults
lead to hours of fiddling the rc files.

Alpine has been around for a while (well, it's a pine clone) and has a
large fan base promoting its "simplicity" over Mutt. "Just as good,
fatless, sane defaults", huh, yummy.

My mail setup looks like that :
- IMAP accounts to Maildir folders on a Debian box, thanks to
"offlineimap"
- direct Maildir access from mutt over ssh in screen (classic win)
- indirect Maildir access through a local IMAP server on the debian box
This setup allows me a decent sync/backup, offline access,
- I use many external apps with mutt like : html/pdf/xls/doc/odt to
text, lbdb as an external PIM, mairix for virtual folders, gpg,
muttprint for pretty printing, ...

Alpine features an address book, an integrated setup utility, good IMAP
and GPG setup ... but :
- in Debian, it doesn't support Maildir :/ (See #405762, early 2007)
- the setup utility is just insane
- I just can't use this non-vi-like UI : pressing "/" doesn't trigger
the search function
- nano for editor ... No joke.

Well, the whole non-vi-like thing just calls "apt-get remove --purge
alpine".

- add / remove adresses within your key with "gpg --edit-key KEYID"
- export key to pgp.mit.edu like pgp servers with "gpg --send-key KEYID"

- encrypt/sign messages pressing "p" just before sending "y"
- decrypt messages, no matter their content type using "check-

Got an old nice looking mac your girlfriend can't resign to refurb ?
Like Linux running on it to serve as a juke / web / bittorrent client
box instead of your deprecated and slow MacOSX 10.3 ?

Debian is a nice Linux distribution for PPC systems (YellowDog,
Net/OpenBSD should be OK as well).
As those old Imac CD drives are most of the time out of order, let's
try a netboot install ; macs are shipped with OpenFirmware, which,
since v4.1, can netboot using bootp/tftp. If unsure, try to upgrade
your firmware (called "Internal program" by Apple update manager).

Requirements :
============

- Imac G3 400Mhz - 256M
- any unix box than can provide bootp/tftp

Setting up a netboot server
======================

On your Debian server box :

1. install "tftpd-hpa" and "bootp" servers
$ atp-get install tftd-hpa bootp

2. create "/tftpboot" folder
$ mkdir /tftpboot

3. check /etc/inetd.conf for these lines and edit accordingly :

bootpd -i -t 120
tftp dgram udp wait root /usr/sbin/in.tftpd

7. change to /tmp/ ang fetch Debian PPC netboot image
$ lftp ftp://http.us.debian.org/debian/dists/lenny/main/installer-powerpc/current/images/powerpc/
> mirror netboot
> exit
$ mv /tmp/netboot/* /tftpboot/

Netbooting the Imac
================

1. Start and hold "CMD + OPT + O + F" until you can see the OF (Open
Firmware) prompt

2. type :
> boot enet:192.168.1.21,yaboot
where 192.168.1.21 is the IP of my Debian-bootp-server,

3. you should face the yaboot prompt (boot.msg) : just read the
instructions (press enter)

Installing
=======

Be careful at DHCP config time, if your BOOTP server is still active,
the Debian installer might have some problems to get an IP from the
DHCP. You can safely disconnect the bootp/tftp server during this
phase

Nothing special here, just install Debian the way you like it.

Final words
==========

- The iMac is a decent desktop as a net/juke box even with Gnome loaded.
One could try some lightweight environments to speed it up a little.

- Power management doesnt't work at all for now (s2ram or s2disk).

- 2D performances are correct, refresh is a bit slow.
