We are all unique. It's amazing to see the different personalities that God has put together in all the individuals of the world.

Sunrise in Our Backyard

1. I'm an early riser. My biorhythms seem to work best in the early morning hours. Lately, I've been learning to exercise first thing in the morning when I have the most energy and the least excuses. I work well all morning long until about mid-afternoon where I begin to get sleepy. I get my second wind about 4 p.m. and feel pretty good until about 8 p.m. After that, don't ask for much out of me. And if, for some reason, I stay up after 10 p.m. you will hear nothing but nonsense from me. My brain has powered down for the night.

But while I'm an early bird, my whole family are night owls. Yes, my family does their best work at night. The midnight hours are for writing term papers, doing laundry, making brownies, remodeling projects - you name it. One night I woke up to go to the bathroom and discovered my husband had moved the china cabinet and was mopping and waxing where it had stood. Yep, that's how they roll.

2. I gauge my comfort level on my toes. If my toes are hot, air-conditioning and bare feet is the remedy. If my toes are cold, then I'm freezing. I must have socks, my heaviest afghan and a cup of hot tea. If I don't get those things, my feet will cramp and then nobody is a happy camper.

3. I'm an inveterate laugher. I get tickled at the most random things and at the most random times. I've had to leave many a church service, wedding or funeral because something would strike me funny and I couldn't keep from laughing. Also, I recycle old jokes. What I mean by that is that I can suddenly remember something amusing that happened in the past and enjoy it all over again ... all day long. While I'm admitting all these things, I might as well 'fess up and tell you that if I get really tickled, I've been known to snort. Loudly.

4. I'm a voracious reader. I not only read books constantly, but anything and everything that has the written word on it. Even the backs of cereal boxes must be read - even if I've read it before.

5. I'm addicted to McDonald's sweet tea. I try to limit myself but it is verra verra hard! (Imagine a Scottish brogue as you read the word "verra.")

6. I'm deathly afraid of mice - more afraid of them when they are dead then when they are alive. Because, after all, if they are dead, someone has to dispose of them. I try to make sure it's not me!

Post-storm Musings

It's ironic that I wrote about an Epic Storm last week .... and then Monday, a tornado hit Oklahoma.

*A meteorologist for the local news station KFOR called the tornado “the worst tornado in the history of the world.”

There have been storms where more lives were lost, but in terms of size, strength and duration of the twister, the Moore, Oklahoma, tornado definitely qualifies as one of the worst.

As I watched the television news reports of the devastation wrought by the twister, I felt so heartbroken for the victims. In 40 minutes, the tornado had devastated life for those who lived in Moore. Nothing again would ever be the same.

I've been through a flood which was devastating to me, yet when it was over, at least we still had the frame of our house to guide us in our rebuilding. Moore residents have nothing but piles of rubble.

The epic storm I described was a spiritual storm. The Oklahoma storm was a terrifyingly physical storm ... but there will be spiritual consequences. Will people seek God for comfort? Or will they blame Him?

I watched several interviews of survivors and also Oklahoma officials. Nearly all of them mentioned prayers. Funny how in times of trouble, people mention prayer. (Of course, they don't mention Jesus; still, I'm glad their minds do focus on prayer.)

During that storm, it would have been more than natural to fear. We are, after all, human beings. Our mortality is never more evident than during a physical crisis. When the storm was over, I pray that many gave God thanks for His protection.

Last week, I wrote, "Until the call on our lives is accomplished, no storm can overtake us, no matter how epic its proportions." I still believe that. I know some died, but I know many were spared. Spared for a purpose, I believe.

Join me in praying that Oklahomans will seek God for wisdom in rebuilding their lives. May a move of God's Holy Spirit minister in Moore like never before. It wouldn't be the first time He brought something beautiful out of ashes.

For those whose lives ended yesterday, I'm praying their families find comfort only He can give. I can write no words of wisdom here except to point people to God when tragedy strikes.

After all, He knows how it feels to lose a child.

He heals the brokenhearted And binds up their wounds. Psalm 147:3

Daybook-05.20.13

FOR TODAY, MONDAY, MAY 20th

Outside my window... overcast and warm, 76°

I am thinking...about my new daily schedule. Today begins week 3 of exercising continuously every morning before work. The first week I did the Walk Away the Pounds video one mile walk. The second week, I did the one mile walk while doing the weights. This week, I'm doing the two mile. Let me just say the two mile is more intense!

I am thankful...for grace. How I need it!

In the kitchen... broiled pork steak

I am wearing... black dress with turquoise shrug

I am creating... new work habits. I've already shared the exercise part of my new schedule. I'm also working from home on my second job each evening instead of working all day Saturday. This is my second week of working from home and it seems to be going well.

I am going... to a picnic Saturday.

I am reading... book three of the Secrets of Crittenden County series, "Found," by Shelley Shepard Gray.

I am hoping...to have time to plant my containers on my porch soon.

I am looking forward to... Memorial Day ... another day off!

So true... I thought my life would turn out a certain way, and it was way the other direction ... at least, so far! Who knows what my life will be like by the end of my earthly journey?

One of my favorite things...using binders to organize various things. I especially love binders with a clear pocket where you can use colored paper to make a pretty cover.

A few plans for the rest of the week: sticking with my new schedule ... and hopefully put up winter clothes and find my capris!

Sing A New Song

I'm the reluctant worship leader at my church. It's not that I don't want to worship, I love worship, it's just that I don't feel qualified and I wish God would send someone else to do it.

Since He hasn't, yet, then I find that songs are on my mind. All. The. Time.

I'm always wondering what song would be a good song to open with, and which song is good for closing? Which more-contemporary-song can I introduce to our used-to-hymn-singing crowd?

Oh, there is much to think about.

I personally think we need to be singing all the time, and the songs that flow up out of your spirit are the best ones.

When I'm feeling happy there is often a song on my lips. Maybe not even a spiritual song - sometimes it might just be a happy song. "The Hills are Alive with the Sound of Music," can often be heard around my house just as much as "Love is a Many-Splendored Thing."

When I feel the presence of God, often the song "He Touched Me," is on my mind.

Hey, there's even days when a little "Don't Worry, Be Happy," can be heard on my lips!

Another beautiful week draws to a close, and it is time to reflect on the highlights of my days.

1. On Saturday, the first person in our families to hold a Master's degree, our daughter, Elissa, graduated from SIU at Carbondale. We are very proud of her, not only for her hard work in education, but also for her persistence and dedication to going after the things in life that she wants. Best of all? She loves Jesus, which is the main thing I want for all my daughters.

2. The next day was that favorite of all days, Mother's Day. I remember the years before my children were born when I struggled with infertility. Then, Mother's Day was something to be avoided at all costs. But now, no matter what happens, each second Sunday in May, I can celebrate the three gifts God gave me, my daughters. This year we celebrated at Red Lobster. We hadn't been there in a while and really enjoyed it. It seems like all our friends had the same idea; it was like old home week in the lobby, greeting everyone.

Usually, I say that if you want to see old friends, just hang around Wal-Mart, you're bound to see someone you know!

3. Maybe I should write about this next week, after 21 days of establishing a new habit, but I'm excited now. I have re-done my daily schedule to fit in exercising before work each morning, and doing a lot of my work for my second job at home in the evenings in order to have more of my Saturdays free. Today marks the second consecutive week that I've went by my schedule every day. No excuses! (I've never consistently exercised for two weeks straight in my life.)

4. Today, my knock-out rose bush started blooming. I didn't have time to count the flowers or take a photo but my estimate is that there are 8 roses. I'm noticing roses blooming all around me in my part of the world. Love the color!

5. I'm looking forward to tomorrow... It will be a full day, starting with our first yard-saling trip of the season, then worship team practice, followed by a road trip with our friends, Glenda and Wayne. It's sure to make the list of favorites on next week's Friday's Fave Five.

I Can't Believe She Did That!

Ah, T-ball! Oh, the memories! T-ball is a wonderful way to start kids out participating in organized sports.

It's also way fun to watch. Because T-ballers have no idea what they are doing.

We have three daughters and each of them participated in T-ball first and then girls' softball for several years afterwards.

My younger girls started at 4 because my husband coached the team. Let me tell you, 4-year olds have no concept of the game and they really just want to talk with their friends and play in the dirt.

When our daughter, Janae, first started playing, she would hit the ball but then run very slowly to first base. She wasn't confident her ball was not a foul so she'd look at everyone as she ran to see if they told her to go back to the batter's box. Of course, she would get out every time because she ran so slow, even though she often hit the ball hard enough to make several bases.

One day, when I was being the "dug-out mom," I told her, "Look, Janae, I want you to hit that ball and then run as fast as you can all the way home and don't stop for anything."

I forgot to tell her to stop if she got out.

Obediently, she stepped up and hit the ball with a good smack and took off running. She made it to first base and then headed toward second. The second baseman scooped up the ball and ran up and tagged Janae. She was out.

Except she kept running. She ran on to second, then third base, home plate, and on in to the dug-out. People were calling to her, "Stop, stop, you're out," but she kept running. By the time she ran into my arms in the dug-out, she was crying, and I was laughing so hard, tears were in my eyes also.

That's okay, baby. It was Mama's fault.

Malia also started T-ball at age 4. After going to the games to watch her sisters play, she had a general idea of how the game was played. She had also learned that year how to do a cartwheel and was dying to show off her ability..

One day, she got a home run! As she was circling the bases, she decided she would cap off the home-run experience with a cartwheel after she crossed home plate. I think she may have started her cartwheel too soon because instead of doing a cartwheel, she did a head stand -- right on home plate.

Oh, I wish I had a picture - it was so funny. Somehow, she spun around on her helmet with her cleats waving wildly in the air. Everyone held their breath to see if she would fall. I don't know how she did it but the next moment she was on her feet, racing into the dug-out.

Of course, we've never let her forget her "headstand of victory!"

Sigh... I miss T-ball!

Epic Storm

Have you ever had an epic storm hit your life? One that wrecked your life and changed everything?

I sure have.

At first the storm started out slowly. There were rumbles of thunder that preceded the storm - warning signs that I should have known what was coming. The signs of mental illness.

The signs of bipolar disorder.

I used to tell everyone that overnight my husband became a different person when he became ill with bipolar. In reality, there had always been warning signals

Bipolar means two poles - the manic side of the person and the depressed side of the person. The first thirty years of my husband's life, he was on the manic side. Oh, at first, nothing drastic. He had an overabundance of energy and he could exist on few hours of sleep. He got things done! He was very hyper and talkative, funny and amusing.

Then stresses came: a move from one state to another, then moving back home, a job change, the birth of our daughter.

One day the storm hit with a fury. The trigger was my husband's job - a job he didn't like and didn't feel confident in doing. He fell into a deep clinical depression and could not work.

Medications were given. They didn't work well. There were times of hospitalization. Finally, the storm upgraded into a typhoon, and in 1999, he was hospitalized again. This time, he was diagnosed bipolar, and his doctor bluntly stated, "Your husband will never work again."

A hurricane could not have been more devastating. That day everything changed. I was now the family breadwinner and life for our little family would never be the same.

I know a lot of you have experienced a storm hitting your life and nothing afterwards was the same as before.

When Paul was headed to Rome to stand trial before Caesar, he experienced a storm. The KJV calls it a tempestuous head wind, a Euroclydon. Some versions call it a northeaster. It is a storm like a typhoon or a tornado with a deadly whirling of wind.

Everyone on board Paul's ship began lightening the load, praying and fasting. Finally on the 14th day of the storm, Paul stood up and told his shipmates that God had sent an angel to assure him that he would stand before Caesar. What's more, God granted that none who sailed with Paul would perish.

In the midst of the storm, God ministered to Paul and gave him hope. He was reassured the call on his life would continue and he would fulfill what God had ordained for him to accomplish.

You and I can have that same hope. Until the call on our lives is accomplished, no storm can overtake us, no matter how epic its proportions.

When the storm ends, you'll find yourself, load-lightened, heading in a different direction than you ever thought you'd travel. But if you put your hand in His, you can be sure He will go with you.

I am wearing... black jeans and an animal print top my daughter gave me for Mother's Day.

I am creating... a work schedule to free my Saturday afternoons up

I am reading... "The Search" by Shelley Shepard Gray, book 2 of her The Secrets of Crittenden County serires.

I am looking forward to... an afternoon road trip on Saturday with friends.

I am learning ... that if you want to stir up controversy, just post that you believe in complementarianism ...

Around the house... some flowers need to be planted! The containers are ready, but I've not had time to go buy any flowers ...

Comfort Fuel

COMFORT

When I think of the word comfort, two things come to mind: comfort food and God.

Ah, comfort food, how I love it! Macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes and gravy, meatloaf, chicken and dumplings, pot roast, fried chicken ... I think most comfort foods are creamy, fragrant and substantial. Food that sticks to your ribs and keeps you going.

Fuel for your body.

Then I think of how the Bible says God comforts us in all our afflictions. (See 2 Cor. 1:3-4) I wonder if He comforts our spirit like food comforts our bellies - filling us with good things and sticking with us for the long haul.

Fuel for your spirit to keep on keeping on, no matter what the circumstances around us may be speaking to us..

Road Trippin'

My hubby and I love Saturday afternoon long drives, or what I like to refer to as "road trips." Since I work six days a week, I have to work really hard to be done early enough in the day to have time to hit the road, but it's worth it.

It's my belief that there are scenic views and great places to visit not far from home. So often, people travel for miles to come to an event or view an attraction that those who live in the area never see. I'm determined to see as much of my area as possible.

My favorite places to go are places near water. There is nothing more calming than sitting lakeside or along the banks of a river and just contemplating the beauty of God's creation.

I've seen some gorgeous scenery, and incidentally, taken some of my favorite photographs while taking a long drive:

I could go on and on. I haven't even shown you yet the photos of flowers, hills and trees I have taken on my various road trips. There is so much beautiful scenery that God has created. It would do you good to get out there and explore the world around you.

I can't begin to count all the ways our little road trips have benefited us: relaxed and relieved stress, gave us time for uninterrupted conversation, gave us some "unplugged" social media time, inspired me and gave me creative ideas, and a new appreciation for the wonders that are right outside our door.

I firmly believe if we all took more road trips, we'd be less stressed.

The best part of a road trip? Getting a new appreciation and anticipation for when your vehicle heads into the driveway of home. Nothing makes the heart grow fonder (of home) than a little absence!

I can't wait to get on the road again!

A Waking Miracle

Do you ever fall asleep in church?

Sometimes, during sermons and such, I get sleepy. It's not really the fault of the speaker. I am just always doing something, so when I sit down and there is nothing to write, read or look up, I start to yawn.

If I ever start yawning, it is really hard to stop. The next thing I know, I'll start nodding off.

I will jerk awake, open my eyes as wide as possible, shift in my seat, and try to think of something, anything, to keep myself awake. I'll chew gum or pop a mint into my mouth.

Talk about torture! I am wired for sleep, and once my body is going into sleep mode, it is rough to try to delay it.

I'm glad I have a nice comfortable place to ~~sleep~~ sit in church. What if I had to sit in the window sill?

Once a fellow named Eutychus, was listening to the Apostle Paul. It must

have been crowded in the upper room where Paul was preaching because the young man made the choice of sitting in the window.

Maybe he was sitting there, hoping for a cool breeze to keep him awake.

Paul was really long winded that night. He was planning to leave the next day, so he just kept talking until midnight. The longer Paul preached, the more Eutychus fell into a deep sleep. (Some scholars feel the tenses used in the words in this passage portray a struggle to keep awake for Eutychus.)

If I fell out asleep in church, I would hit a nice carpeted floor. It would be embarrassing, and probably no one would let me forget it, but I'd be all right.

Eutychus drifted into a deep sleep and fell to his death out the window. A window on the third floor!

Paul went downstairs and fell upon him hugging him. Then he said, "Don't fret, he is alive!"

Talk about something that will. Wake. You. Up! They were so energized by this turn of events, they went back upstairs, celebrated the Lord's Supper (how appropriate after someone has been brought back to life!) and then talked till daylight. Paul and his fellow travelers headed on their way, and the young man and his church family went home comforted that all had turned out so well.

I bet they talked about that night during many a church fellowship to come!

What is the point in this story? I think there are two things to take note of in this account.

One is that the very first thing we should do when tragedy befalls us is to pray. Reach the throne room of heaven as quickly as possible.

The second is that the Word promises us that the things Jesus did - and greater! - we would be able to do by the power of the Holy Spirit. Paul just proved it in this passage. Jesus brought back someone from the dead. So did Paul. If the Holy Spirit leads, so could someone today!

FOR TODAY

Outside my window... 56° and overcast.

I am thinking... about Pastor's sermon yesterday, The Famous One. In Mark chapter one, Jesus healed a man with an unclean spirit, and his fame was spread abroad Galilee. Seriously, there has never been, nor will there ever be, a more famous one than Jesus. After all, we even divide time with the year of His birth.

His name has power; in fact, today people are so afraid of hearing the mere mention of His name, they try to erase His name from any public arena. So, unbelievers must know it is powerful, too.

I am thankful...for the wonderful place I grew up and all the lovely memories I have.

In the kitchen... pinto beans and cornbread ... yum!

I am wearing... black pinstripe pants, teal sparkly tank top, black shrug

I am reading... "The Yellow Packard," by Ace Collins. Riveting!

I am looking forward to... my next day off, Memorial Day. Hope it doesn't rain!

One of my favorite things...penny candy - or nowadays it is a nickle or dime apiece. When we went to Branson, we went to a Woolworth Dime Store that was a lot like the Woolworth's I used to go to as a kid. They had an assortment of candies that brought back memories. Of course, I had to have a few of them. (See the picture below.)

FFF - 05.03.13

I'm back! I missed participating in last week's Friday's Fave Five because I was on a little road trip with my hubby and our best friends, Wayne and Glenda.

What a wonderful time!

Eating out every day, staying in a luxurious condo, shopping and going to shows to be entertained, laughing like crazy - it's a good thing that the trip was only three days. I experienced withdrawal when I had to go back to work! Why, oh, why was I not born a millionaire? Sigh ...

1. Our first night in Branson, we went to see Joseph, a play based on the life of Joseph from the bible. It was very good and I highly recommend it. The play was presented at the gorgeous Sight and Sound Theater.

3. Saturday was a wonderful day of shopping, eating, and laughing. We went to the Pierce Arrow show and I laughed until I cried! (I think everyone would get a kick out of that show.) By then, we were in a silly state of mind. We began to discuss country stars and their songs (Did you know George Jones died that day?). I decided to give my rendition of "Oh, Lord, It's Hard to be Humble," made famous by Mac Davis.

I tell you, Branson is my new favorite place.

4. Our trip ended on Sunday with a stop in Mansfield, MO, to see the home of Laura Ingalls Wilder. I was so excited to be there. I have a ton of pictures but today will just share these:

The Day JFK Died

I remember the day JFK was shot.

I was 7 years old. I was sitting at my desk in my second grade class at Lincoln Elementary in Elgin, IL, when all of a sudden the loud speaker came on. Right in the middle of class, our principal gave us the news:

"We are sad to inform you that our President has been shot and has died. Our school will be closed the rest of today in honor of our President's passing."

I remember that everyone looked at each other with wide eyes. Our teacher told us to go on home and we silently put on our coats and left. There was no talking or chattering - we were as quiet as if we were in church.

Our little school was a neighborhood school, so there were no buses and we all walked. I ran the two blocks home as fast as I could and burst through the door into the living room. My dad and granny (who both worked the night shift) were home and sitting there with their eyes glued to the television as the latest reports were being broadcast. I started to say something and dad raised his finger to his lips and said "Ssh," so I sat quietly and watched the news with them.

The next couple of days was spent around the television. I had never been so involved in a news story. I'm sure there had been lots of other times that there were gripping news stories - like the Bay of Pigs invasion and elections and such - but this was the first story that caught a little girl's interest.

I learned all about the President, Jackie, Caroline and John-John. I heard about the President's father and mother, his sisters and brothers, and the Kennedy fortune.

I heard about JFK's most famous quote:

My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country. John F. Kennedy

I was quite taken with all that I observed about him and for years I would consider myself a Democrat in his honor. (As an adult, I became a Republican, but that is a story for another day.)

The most touching moment of all was when the news showed little John-John saluting his father's casket. Awww!

Since that day, there have been many riveting news stories: 911, Princess Diana's death, Oklahoma City bombing, Sandy Hook and the Boston Marathon bombing stick out in my memory. But the one I remember most is the news story that touched my life: the assassination of my President.

Speak Up!

I'm not a bold person.

For many years, I let the fear of what others think keep me a prisoner. I was too shy to break those bonds and freely speak up.

Lately, I've been writing that coming into your fifties is wonderful because you have finally shook off those fears and are willing to be who you are. Who cares if people don't like what you say?

It's a free country ... isn't it?

Paul didn't have the luxury of free speech. People took exception to what he had to say. In fact, they hated his message so much, they tried to beat the messenger to death. Sometimes, he got put into prison for his speeches.

But that didn't happen at Corinth.

Acts 18:9-10
Now the Lord spoke to Paul in the night by a vision, “Do not be afraid, but speak, and do not keep silent; for I am with you, and no one will attack you to hurt you; for I have many people in this city.”

Paul kept on preaching and won Gentiles and even the Jewish leader of the synagogue to Christ. The other Jews tried to imprison him but the authorities didn't want to mess with religious cases and threw it out of court.

Paul had favor and had no reason to fear. The Lord said no one would attack him to hurt him. When God tells you that you can depend on it.

Am I saying that if you preach Jesus you will never suffer harm? No. We all know that we live in a sinful world that mistreats Christ-followers. But if God says you won't be harmed, you won't.

I was thinking about this and remembered my pastor's wife, Ellen Hart, who sang the song, I'll Tell the World that I'm a Christian, back in the day when I was a teenager: I looked for the song on YouTube and found this sweet little a capella version:

What about you? Are you afraid to speak up and tell the world you are a Christian? Do you think we have reason to fear identifying with Christ?

How about speaking up when you believe God is directing you to do something unpopular? Something you believe is biblical but the Christian community doesn't see it the same way you do? Knowing that sometimes the family of God wounds its own?

What then?

In the end, what matters most is fulfilling what Christ has called you to do. If He asks you to share a controversial message, be it among pagans or fellow pilgrims, you must speak up. It will be like a "fire shut up in your bones" until you do!

I am thankful... for my trip to Branson - I had a marvelous time.

In the kitchen... I have no idea what will be made in the kitchen today ...

I am creating... container gardens.

I am going... home after work each day this week - no meetings! (Well, except for church on Wednesday, of course.)

I am looking forward to... getting flowers to fill up my planters on my porch.

A Disaster That Became A Gift

Sometimes what looks like a terrible thing ends up being a good thing - a gift, if you will - that ends up making life better.

Such was the strange gift of Spring of 2011.

We live between two rivers, and that spring brought us a deluge of water - the Mississippi was above flood stage, the Ohio River was above flood stage and the heavens opened up and gave us a soaking like you wouldn't believe. We ended up with a flooded house.

Now, you wouldn't call a flooded house a gift. It sure didn't look like one. Flood water inside your home makes everything look terrible. We came back to retrieve our things and the trash cans had been overturned and garbage floated through the house.

It was a mess!

The flood forced us to make some decisions. For years, we were stymied by indecision regarding should we remodel the house or just try to sell it as is? Did we want to stay in our little town or did we want to move up the road to the town where I worked? It was easier to just put off making any kind of decision and just stay as we were.

But now, clearly something had to be done. We set to work to remodel the house. So many people came and helped us with the remodel! And so we discovered the gift of friendship and neighbors willing to help us.

We discovered that we were stronger than we believed. When we were so tired or discouraged that we didn't think we could do another thing, somehow the energy and the will to go on was found.

In the end, the house that had been so damaged looked so much better and more modern than it had ever looked before.

The greatest miracle was that God had blessed us in such a way that when the remodel was done, everything was paid for and we had no debt.

A side benefit to the flood was that living away from home during the remodel meant that my husband joined the worship team and became a regular attender on Sunday nights - something I had been hoping would happen. He had gotten into the habit of not going with me to church when he first became ill with bipolar disorder. When you have no home, there is not much to do. He decided to start coming and got involved with the worship team and has been going ever since.

I count that as one of the greatest gifts I could receive.

So you see, a natural disaster can turn out to be a gift - a strange gift, perhaps, but still a blessing.

Lame Thoughts from a Worshiper

My kids think I'm "lame."

I took some ribbing lately when I posted some limericks I wrote. Really? It's lame to write limericks - especially if you're not Irish?

You know the great thing about being in my fifties? I've learned not to care when I look or act a little "less than." In other words, I don't care if people realize I'm not perfect.

I embrace my lameness.

I especially embrace the fact that I might look lame to those who observe me as a Christ-follower. I want to be known as a worshiper.

Worship should be a part of everything we do. I'm reminded of the famous 17th century monk, Bro. Lawrence, who practiced the presence of God during his daily chores - even worshiping while peeling potatoes!

Paul says this is my reasonable acts of worship:

I appeal to you therefore, brethren, and beg of you in view of [all] the mercies of God, to make a decisive dedication of your bodies [presenting all your members and faculties] as a living sacrifice, holy (devoted, consecrated) and well pleasing to God, which is your reasonable (rational, intelligent) service and spiritual worship. (Romans 12:1 AMP)

After all, the One who gave His all for me should receive nothing less than my all.

It's reasonable for me to talk to Him all day long and seek guidance in every decision I make.

It's reasonable for me to notice in every day life the gifts He has given me and give Him thanks for each one.

It's reasonable for me to remember the world is watching my witness and taking note of every step I take. I don't want to do anything that would reflect badly on my Lord.

If everyone knows I am a Christ-follower and then sees me slack on the job, or hears me gripe, complain or gossip, I've just tarnished my witness.

It's okay if people think I'm lame, I just don't want them to think I'm a bad witness for Christ.

Outside my window...cool sunshine. It was 47° when I first got up.

I am thinking...of the beautiful world God made. So much beauty to savor!

I am thankful... for the changing of the seasons. There is much that is good about each one - even winter!

In the kitchen...comfort food: homemade hamburger helper

I am wearing... black tank dress with animal print jacket. I'm wearing sandals but not sure that it was a wise choice.

I am creating...blogposts ... I'm always thinking about new ones.

I am going... to Branson on Friday.

I am looking forward to...Branson. 4 more days!

Around the house...at least I put the Easter centerpiece away ... I feel good about that.

It's another lovely, albeit chilly, Friday here on the Journey.

Time to reflect on the good things the past week has brought.

1. The big news of the week is that our daughter, Elissa, is buying her first house! Her offer was accepted and now the dreaming stage is becoming a reality. If all goes well, the paperwork should be done by the time school is out and then her work is cut out for her (and Jim). I am planning to serve in an advisory position! There will be lots of painting and decorating going on ...

2. Sunday night brought us a time of sweet fellowship in the Holy Spirit at church. I love times like that, and need it so desperately, especially in times of bombings and explosions in our world. Without the comfort of the Holy Spirit it would be easy to be filled with fear and gloom.

3. Spring has been playing with us, teasing us with days of sunshine, then retreating back to frosty mornings and windy rainy days. Hubby and I have been planning a couple container gardens and will be purchasing another knock-out rose bush, this time in pink. I couldn't wait, so I got some hanging baskets of pansies. I love pansies.

Jump for Joy

JUMP

As a little girl, I was always filled with enthusiasm. If something good happened, I would jump

up and down and clap my hands for joy.

I don't know when I quit doing that ... but let's face it, you don't see adults jump for joy.

But why not?

Shouldn't we still have enthusiasm for life? Especially those of us who are Christians, shouldn't we be filled to overflowing with the joy of the Lord that sometimes we can't help but give a little "hop" of praise?

There used to be a guy who would come down to the altar to pray during the worship service at one of my previous churches. He would get so overcome with praising God, he would begin to jump with his arms raised up in the air, looking for all the world like a human pogo stick.

The more I think about it, the more I think I should be willing to do the same. Jumping for Jesus seems like the least I could do to express my joy in what He has done for me.

Home: My Favorite Place on Earth

My favorite place to be is home. It has been said that home is the place where they have to take you in! Home to me is a haven and a sanctuary of peace. Coming home is the highlight of the
day. (And everyone always seems glad to see me come!)

In honor of my love for home, I have written a few limericks. I was inspired by Mare, writer of Adventures in the Ballpark, after reading her limerick post. I have no desire to write a poem, but limericks seemed like something fun to try.

My first limerick is a sentimental one, entitled, Haven

I’ve made my little house a home

From it I never want to roam

It’s cozy and warm

Filled with love and charm

A haven of rest is my home

My next limerick was written using my sister-in-law, Cora, for inspiration. She uses the word, "chill," a lot.

Chill

Coming home to me is a thrill

Oh, I never can get my fill

I walk through the door

Kick shoes to the floor

Relax in my chair and just chill

I love using the words aroma and fragrance! The imagery of those words just spell home to me. I give you:

Home is Just a Thought Away

Everyone who knows me, knows that I am a lover of home. A meeting canceled? I'm filled with delight to just stay home. An unexpected snow day? Great! Another opportunity to chill at my place. Love it!

Wouldn't it be great if we could be like Dorothy from the movie "Wizard of Oz," and click our heels together and be instantly home?

When something bothers me at work, click. click. I'm home.

When stuck in traffic, click,click.

When I'm in line at Wal-Mart behind a person with a bazillion coupons who also wants to comparison shop with 5 sale papers from other retailers, and on the next aisle over is a family that has a screaming crying kid who. Will. Not. Stop. Crying... Click, click.

Well, you get the idea.

In a way we can instantly transport ourselves home, because home is just a thought away. I can visualize my home and see myself there anytime I want. No, it doesn't get me out of the situation, but it does calm me down.

Sometimes, after hearing news like the bombings at the Boston Marathon, or the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary, I desperately want to go Home. I want to be able to click my heels and instantly arrive at my heavenly home where there is no more death, dying or even crying.

I may not be able to click my heels and go Home, but I can fix my thoughts on Home.

Colossians 3:1-2 New Living Translation:
Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand.Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth.

Instead of dwelling on the horrible things happening in this world, think about the grace God has extended. Think about His love. Think about His promises.

When asked "what is this world coming to?" be ready with an answer. It's coming to the most exciting time ever, the end of the Age. The time when Christ comes to take His people Home. Don't you want to be ready to go?
They say Home is where the heart is. I think Home is where your thoughts dwell. Think about the things of heaven. Think about Home.

FOR TODAY, MONDAY, APRIL 15

Outside my window...62° and overcast.

I am thinking... about asking God each day, "Who do you want me to encourage today?"

I am thankful...for a move of the Holy Spirit in our church last night and the reassurance that God inhabits the praises of His people.

In the kitchen...roast, potatoes and carrots in the crockpot.

I am wearing...gray pants, aqua top.

I am creating...a new stream-lined format for the bulletin at my full-time church. So far, the comments have been good.

I am going...to Branson in 11 days!

I am looking forward to...a ladies' meeting I'm going to on Friday featuring Rhonda Hinson Sullivan.

Around the house... some dusting needs to be done ... but, hey! there's pansies on my front porch! I feel good about that.

I am pondering... the message Pastor preached on John chapter 5. I like what he said, "The Lord of Mercy came to the House of Mercy (Bethesda). (quote by Travis Schroeder)

Ah, sweet Friday has made her way around again!

Again, this week on the Journey has been relatively quiet, but as noted previously, there is a beauty to quiet ordinary days. A time to rest and reflect.

A time to count 5 highlights (or more) of my week and be appreciative:

1. One of the things I love about Fridays is the chance to wear jeans! I started to say it's Casual Friday, but seriously, I never dress casually. I wear jeans, yes, but always a dressy top, jewelry ... the whole bit. I hate it when I go to the bank and their Casual Friday attire looks like they are ready to clean out the garage. Come on, people! Have you never heard of dark wash denim?

But, I digress from my point: Fridays are special because I get to wear my jeans.

2. Spring like weather - it got into the eighties twice this week! Okay, it's back to 46° today, but at least we had glimpses of warm weather.

I've got flower - fever. Must. Plant. Some. Soon.

3. I read a great blog post from Lisa Bevere, who asks the question, "What is in your life that the enemy wants to arrest? Here is the link: There is a Warrant Out for your Arrest.

4. Quote of the week:

Oh, that we might extend grace to all who live with us. (Well, really, we should extend grace to everyone ...)

5. I enjoyed getting several posts written this week. My hubby asked me the other night, "Don't you get tired of writing all the time?" Ummm... no, I don't! My favorite post to write was Blind Faith. Sometimes, "Your miracle might just be waiting for you to be obedient."
