style="font-family: verdana;">Welcome to Jerry’s Story. This is Steve Sherlock. I am the first of the 6 children Gerald and Rita Sherlock brought into this world.

This podcast episode shares some original oral history recorded in August of 1983 by Helen Geoffroy and made available by her son Eric. Helen was one of the younger sisters of Rita. Rita was the oldest of 10.

Helen apparently visited Rita with Mémère and recorded this conversation. Patty is also a part of the discussion.

Mémère (Ernestine Joyal) was the mother of both Rita and Helene. Some of the more relevant ones can be shared here. Others will be shared in other ways with family.

Re-read the comments that my brother Mike made at Dad's service. Well done. Timely then and still a good reflection now. John C. Jones.

Over the years while shooting the breeze and having a coffee with Jerry he would often talk about "Jonesie".

Jerry related that he was a cowboy from what he believed was Colorado. Jones it appears, enlisted in Colorado. I learned of the enlistment Point, coming from USMC and 4th MARDIV sites.

Turns out his hometown was in Burwell, Nebraska.

I discovered this fact early yesterday morning while searching again. It has been on my mind for some time now to still discover if Jones had any relatives. There must have been someone out there.

In early 2009 I was able to find out for Jerry that Jones had died of his wounds and was buried at Sea after Iwo Jima.

Pvt. Jones name was placed on the wall of the Missing at Honolulu, HI at the end of WWII.

I was able to relate this to Jerry. We were coming back from Saturday afternoon lunch with Ernie Delmonico and he thanked me for finding out the information.

He always said that he wanted to try and find his family to let them know that Jones was not alone when he was wounded. Jerry took him to the beachhead to be evacuated.

There is more to that story, as some of us know.

Time and circumstances never allowed for Jerry to connect with the relatives of John C. Jones.

So while searching again I found a casualty list and got his hometown and mothers name.

I was then able to find his brother Clyde Jones. He had quite a resume. Clyde Jones passed away in 2015.

A bit more digging ad I was able to reach out to his daughter, Cheri Jones and connect to her.

I have given her some information and the link to Jerry's Story.

So in some small way there is closure in letting The Jones Family know Pvt. John C. Jones was not alone at Iwo Jima.

"No one gets left on the field."
Quote from Sgt. Emond F. Malloy USMC.

RIP: Angela M. The day Jerry landed on Iwo Jima as a young Marine and was fortunate to walk off later in March when the battle was truly won.

February 19, 2012 ... The day Jerry left us to rejoin Rita and other members of his family and friends.

February 19, 2020 ... no pun intended but hindsight is really 2020 - hard to believe that it has been eight years .. The time has come to share these two stories that Dad wouldn’t initially let me publish.

So let’s set the scene for this segment of my conversation with Dad. I was recording with him, outdoor in Smithfield, RI on Sunday, July 29, 2007.

For part of this recording session, I had some clarifications that I wanted to make on some of the stories covered thus far. One of the clarifications sparked a couple of stories he had not told ‘the kids’ (meaning my brothers and sisters).

As I processed the files for publication, Dad had me hold off on these two stories as his grandchildren were too young. Time has marched on. Dad has left us now going on 7 years and the youngest of the grandchildren is now over 21. I see no reason why we can share the stories now. I believe Dad would approve.

As time permits, I’ll continue to refresh Jerry’s Story but these were the only two stories that had been held back per his request.

Without further ado, here is my conversation with Jerry in 2007 when he reveals two stories he had not previously shared.

https://www.hipcast.com/podcast/Hm54TQ7X

More on the differences between the K and C ration from wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K-ration

The opening and closing piano clip is from Shady Dave
The passing of Jerry deeply affected the Sherlock Clan. However his other boys in the Marine Corps Family were heart broken as well.

Ed Malloy and Jerry Sherlock became fast friends.
At the final episode of HBO's The Pacific, The Malloy's hosted the screening and Ellie Malloy provided a somewhat sugar free dessert for Jerry.

In 2014 Ed Malloy was diagnosed with a rare form of Liver Cancer and given only months to live.

Ed and I spoke of Jerry during those first few weeks of the diagnosis. Ed refused to quit.
Something that no Marine has ever done.

Ed fought and went for advanced treatments and programs.
The Cancer Center at Rhode Hospital where Jerry had received treatments had developed a fund Called Rising Above Cancer.
A Road Race was held in Warwick City Park every year. Runners could form teams.
The Malloy Strong Team was developed.

Eventually it would become the largest Team at every race. A kelly Green Shirt with the words Malloy Strong on the front. NEVER GIVE UP on the back.

Ed's courage, strength and character bonded people who would never have connected.
Over $250,000.00 has been raised and the Cancer Center renamed the the program The Malloy Strong Rising above Cancer Fund.
It is used to assist people going through cancer treatments.

Sadly Ed passed away on October 31,2019. He was promoted to Sergeant at Rhode Island Hospital the morning before he died.
Sgt. Edmond F. Malloy, PPD/USMCR was buried with Military Honors by his brothers from the USMC.
Many of us all spoke after the funeral at the RI Veterans Cemetery. We all agreed that Ed was met by PFC Jerry Sherlock and would be dining with other famous Marines at the Birthday Dinner at Tun Tavern by St. Peter's Gate.

Ed Malloy is on Jerry's right shoulder. Steve Cileli on the left.

Semper Fi To Ed Malloy, Jerry Sherlock and Jack Mainor.

Happy Birthday Marines!

(Stepping back to share the post from Feb 19, 2013)

One: 68 years ago, the Marines landed on Iwo Jima. Among them Jerry charged ashore as part of the 1st Joint Assault Signal Company in the 4th Division. He was lucky to walk off the island when it was all over. When asked about his time there, most of the time he said: "the real heroes did not come home."

Two: 67 years after he had landed and was lucky to walk off the island, Jerry took his last walk from us. I still think there was something about that connection.

Deep in the archives, there are recordings of Jerry talking of his life. I was fortunate to capture from his earliest memory up to the beginning of the 1950's. Unfortunately, I did not get more than that. His health problems started intervening. A couple of times when we did sit to record turned out to be TIA incidents where we rushed off to the hospital. I got a little gun shy after those incidents.

What we have we can listen to again and again. And treasure for the guidance and example he did set!

-----------

This is a brief recording where Jerry recalls his earliest memory and how there were two "Henry's".

Time: 4 minutes, 8 seconds
Sherlock (nee Brown), 63, of Deer Park, passed away on August 6, 2018. The daughter of the late Earl L. and Yvette Brown, Lisa was the loving wife of Bob Sherlock for 37 years; beloved mother of Will (Kristen) Sherlock and Meghan (Florentino) Sherlock Salazar; sister of Earl (Kathleen) Brown, Alan Brown, Julie (Bruce) Rioux and Eugene Brown; aunt and cousin of many.

Born and raised in Fort Kent, Maine, Lisa received her BA in speech pathology from the University of Maine. After marrying Bob, she moved with him around the U.S. before settling in the Barrington area in 1995. She worked at Barrington High School as a tech/media specialist and before that as a special services aide.

Lisa would want to be remembered for bringing joy to those around her. She loved to get people laughing with her. She was a doer and orchestrator with smarts, energy, creativity, and organizational skills. She loved being a mom and was great at it. From little childhood scrapes to her kids’ biggest moments, she was always there, loving her family more than anything. She also held a tender place in her big heart for the kids of the Barrington area, encouraging and guiding the pre-teens and teenagers she met at school and in the community.

Visitation for Lisa will be held on Thursday, August 9, from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at Davenport Family Funeral Home and Crematory, 149 W. Main St. (Lake-Cook Rd.), Barrington, IL. On Friday, August 10, visitation will continue at 9:00am until the time of her Mass at 10:00am at Saint Anne Catholic Community, 120 N. Ela St., Barrington.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sweetser, www.sweetser.org/makeagift.php. Interment will take place at a later date in Fort Kent, Maine.

Updated: the grave side service is scheduled for Saturday, August 18 at 11:00 AM

St. Louis Cemetery is on E Main St, Fort Kent, ME 04743. Assuming that you drove to FK on Maine Route 11, continue until Rt. 11 ends at Main St. (U.S. Route 1) in downtown Fort Kent. Turn right onto Main St. and continue east and northeast for + / - a mile. It’ll be up a hill, on the left. It is just before the Northern Maine Medical Center.
Merry Christmas to the Sherlock Clan.

Joanie found this in her Dad's papers. It was the actual menu from MCRD PISC

(Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, SC)

Not sure on the travel of this menu. Did it got to the Pacific with Jerry? Did he send it home.

Well either way it was a perfect condition.

Merry Christmas

The Marine Corps Birthday has come and gone.

Ed Malloy who organized the Task Force to produce the Honored event for Marines young and old was taken ill.

Two years ago Ed was conducting a motorcycle escort with the Providence Police and was struck by a vehicle.

Unknown to him a lesson developed as a result and grew. When the President of the United States made an official visit to Providence Ed was in the forefront of this event. In between, he was making final checks for the Marine Corps Dinner.

While enroute with POTUS from TF Green Airport, the lesion burst while leading the motorcade to Providence. Ed was bleeding internally. Unknown to anyone. Ed completed the mission with the President. Upon arrival to the Omni Hotel, Ed collapsed and was rushed to RI Hospital. He underwent Emergency surgery to stop the bleeding

Ed missed the Marine Corps Birthday Dinner for the first time.

He underwent surgery last week to repair the damage. He is in Rhode Island Hospital recuperating.

Ed had a special relationship with Jerry Sherlock. Jerry was held in awe by Ed and other Marines.
Jerry was their Senior Marine. A Marine of WWII and combat survivor of Iwo Jima.

We here wish Ed Malloy, his wife Ellie and their children the very best.

Please keep Ed in your prayers when you have a moment.
