C300 Thoughts

I've been looking into the new Canon c300 and while for it's price it lacks some features like a 10-bit colorspace and 1080p at 60 frames. The lowlight capabilities are very impressive. The 4:2:2 colorspace is better than the current crop of DSLR's but you also have to pay $15,000 to get one of these camera's which makes it tough to justify when you can buy a 60d, 7d, or 5dmk2 all for under $3,000.

The only thing that makes me want to purchase the c300 is the amazing lowlight capabilities, video noise looks more like film, and the size of the camera is still quite small.

Indie Feature

I haven't updated this site for sometime now, mostly because I haven't been focused fully on cinematography alone. I recently jumped into producing/writing/directing my first feature film titled Skate Proof. I financed it completely from my own personal credit card and was able to get a production grant for lighting and sound equipment from the NB Film co-op.

The film was shot on my own Canon 7d kit with Nikon Ai lenses which has been my go to setup ever since I first got the camera.

There's loads of new large sensor camera's out there on the market now so I'm eventually going to have to look into upgrading from the 7d to something like the new Red Scarlet or Canon C300 or but I'll wait for the price to come down just a bit before I take the leap. Skateboard Montage

I'm currently travelling back and forth between Montreal and Fredericton doing some video work, and while I was back in Fredericton for the holidays I got a chance to make a skateboard montage about a friend's private skatepark that he has for the winter, which he basically uses to keep his skateboarding skills sharp before he leaves to go allover the world to skate.

I'm also working on a new TNB commercial for they're upcoming show titled "Hockey Dreams" which will be the 4th commercial I've worked on with them, and it's always a pleasure to collaborate with the talented people at tnb.

Here's a teaser for a short film called "The Editor" directed by Jillian Acreman and I'll be the Director of Photography. The film hasn't been shot yet but we were shooting some still photos for promotional material for the film and figured since we were shooting on the 7d which does stills and video that we may as well shoot some footage to put together a little teaser for the film. Production for the film starts in early June.

Last fall I shot a short film for a friend Will Beatty, and the short film was the first thing I had ever shot on the Canon 7D which had a few learning curves at first but we figured it out. But when I got to watch the footage back that's when I knew the potential of the SLR camera's for filmmaking. Here's a little teaser from the short film.

NAB 2010

This year at NAB(National Association of Broadcasters) conference all the rage is around HDSLR's, I've heard that almost every booth have these cameras setup with each companies support systems or something related to the HDSLR's. Below is a video of the pioneer who did the first short film with an slr Vincent Laforet at NAB.

Also Litepanels have come up with some cool new products including a 250w fresnel which uses an LED light and outputs the same brightness as a 2k Tungsten fresnel.

There's been a lot of talk online amongst cinematographers about HDSLR's lately and the big one would be Zeiss's announcement about releasing a Cine style lens that is exactly like any other 35mm pl mount lens, only they're EF mount so they will fit on any Canon Slr's. Also the season finale episode of the TV show House was completely shot on a Canon 5dmk2 SLR. And below is a short film shot by Shane Hurlbut ASC.

I just wrapped up shooting a feature film in New Brunswick called "The Night" which is a thriller/horror genre film about a young boy who was teased during his childhood and dissapears one night while on camping trip and comes back to haunt the town. We shot the film on a Canon 7D and had a T2i as a B camera which was a great experience because we were able to get some really interesting angles that we could not have gotten with any other camera. Once the trailer for the film is online I will post it up here.

The photo below is of the camera team and from left is myself cinematographer, in the middle is Chris Giles the 1st AC/B-camera operator and on the right is the 2nd AC Phil Angers.

Boxface pt 2

This past weekend I just wrapped up shooting the Short film Boxface although there is still one scene left to shoot, which will be done next month but 95% of the film is shot so the editing begins. This was the first film I shot on the 7D camera and I was very impressed with how the footage looks and would recommend using dslr's for shooting films to anyone who can't afford to spend money on a RED camera or want to have a smaller/more portable camera package to free up your camera angles/moves, and have similar results to the RED.

Boxface

I'm currently in production on a short film titled "Boxface" where I'm serving as the Producer/Director of Photography. The film is about a character who struggles in life with an anxiety/depression disorder and to represent his illness in the film he wears a box on his head, the short is written by Joel M Thompson and he's also a Director/Producer on the film.

Canon and Vimeo.com teamed up to do a contest for filmmakers shooting on dslr's, and there are some well known DP's judging the contest such as Russell Carpenter, Shane Hurlbut, Rodney Charters and more.
It's an interesting contest because there's different parts that filmmakers do films for. The first part was shot by Vincent Laforet and ended with a case in a warehouse, so the objective was to start your 4 minute short with the end image of the case in a warehouse from part 1.

Unfortunately this video was only open to US residents so I wasn't able to get a team together and enter. Below is one of the 5 finalist films that I voted for.

Here's one my more recent inspirations for cinematography from a scene in the film "The Assassination of Jesse James" which was shot by Roger Deakins. The whole movie is beautifully shot and Roger's realistic lighting style add's a lot to the movie.

TNB Commercial

I recently worked on a TNB commercial for their upcoming theater play titled "Skin Flick" by Norm Foster. The commercial was interesting because it had to feel like a film at start then pull out to reveal that it's actually a play. The commercial will be on TV in early March and there will also be an online version which I will post when it's up.

Numbers BTS

It's interesting to see a big show like "Numbers" use the 7d for insert and pick up shots. It shows how much the DSLR technology is revolutionizing the film/TV industry and like the DP in the video says it allows the camera's to be more mobile and intimate.

Machotaildrop

I recently saw a trailer for an independent film called Machotaildrop and was really intrigued because it's not your typical movie about skateboard culture, it actually looks very unique and from what I can see from the trailer has a really good style. I think the style of this film reminds me a bit of Wes Anderson and Spike Jonze put together.

Canon's Rebel

Well it looks like Canon's announcement was another DSLR that can shoot 1080 24p video. The camera is the rebel T2i and costs $800 for the body only, when compared to the 7d it's quite amazing that they're able to have full hd come from this camera. The only thing I'm wondering is it only has a single digic processor vs the 7d which has a dual digic processor so will there be more compression in the footage because of the single processor?. I guess we'll have to wait and see for video samples.

Canon did say they've adapted a file based recording codec that's mpeg-2 HD with a color space of 4:2:2 for their new prosumer video camera line that hasn't been released yet. I just hope they finally cram the aps-c sensor in one of the video cameras other wise it won't be enough to make people switch over from shooting on dslr's.

Looks like Canon's going to be announcing something on Monday, there's speculation that it's either a new camera or a new movie projector. They also released a plugin for final cut pro so the 7d/5d/1d footage can now be transcoded in final cut.
