So I’ve been feeling so much hope for the music industry as a whole lately because of the rising quality of the music that is being released by both major label and independent artists. A lot of you may be out there listening to the radio and thinking “Really?” Here’s the thing…

STOP LISTENING TO THE RADIO!!

People as a whole want to hear good music. This cannot be denied. The problems is 13 year old’s as a whole just want to be a part of whatever they are told is cool, and teenagers spend money on music..err.. teenagers spend their parents’ money on music.

Just because someone tells you that you should like something doesn’t mean you should, but it also doesn’t mean you shouldn’t. The problem with the radio is that they are beating you over the head with what you “should” like so persistently, that if you’re not a 13 year old, you’re probably going to stop liking it just out of spite… I know that’s what happens to me anyway.

So turn your radio off. Get on the internet, get out to shows, and decide what is good for yourself. That way, when you run across a killer song like Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep,” you won’t have already heard it 300 times in the last week! This song has been number one on the charts for ages, and deservedly so, but how many times have I heard it on the radio?… twice.. maybe three times. Not because they’re not beating a dead horse, but because my radio is off.

A little love for Beyonce

So I didn’t watch American Idol this year partly because I don’t have a lot of time for TV, and partly because American Idol makes my wife’s palms sweat… but anyway, we accidentally tuned in for the Idol finale a couple weeks ago. Here I am thinking that we’re tuning in to watch a nearly irrelevant contest show breathing it’s dying breath, and bam… we’re hit in the face with act after act of popular music’s top talent blowing it up on the stage.

I must say I was impressed, encouraged, and even inspired. For me, the highlight of a seriously killer lineup of music was Beyonce’s introduction of her new single, 1+1 (One Plus One), from the new album, 4: proof that just because an artist is mainstream doesn’t mean that they aren’t the genuine article.

As my Beyonce moment happened to coincide with the launching of hgmusicmedia.com’s “Live From Higher Ground,” I decided to pull out a little Beyonce for you all. I hope you enjoy!

Earl Thomas is on fire!

The Jesse Johnson Trio’s show opening up for Earl Thomas at KPRI’s Green Flash Concert Series was a great time. We had fun playing our mellow, “acoustic” set. Because of the expectation of bad weather, we were forced to move the whole thing from the outdoor patio, right on the ocean, to insde Birch Aquarium. With beautiful views of the sunset and Pacific Ocean through the aquarium’s floor to ceiling windows, and the positive energy of a crowd ready to rock with Earl Thomas, it didn’t much matter.

None of us had seen Earl perform before this event, though after hearing his music, we were ready for a good show. Still, Earl Thomas and The Blues Ambassadors exceed all possible expectations when it comes to putting on a live show… I’ve never seen a singer who can rival Earl’s energy, conviction, power, and commitment to the music. Truly amazing stuff. If you haven’t already, be sure to check out Earl’s music, and we’ll see you at the next show…

Once again, Cathryn Beeks comes through big for The Jesse Johnson Trio. A few weeks ago, just before our big opening for Earl Thomas (also booked by Cathryn), we got the chance to play with some killer talent that we hadn’t had the chance to come across before. Cathryn is starting “Listen Local Sundays” over at House of Blues, where she is hand picking a line up of bands who fit into a given genre… our night was “Soul Night.”

We got the chance to play a killer show to an audience that was prepared to hear our specific brand of tunes, and with some awesome acts. First, The Jesse Johnson Trio rocked it out with a show that really felt good, in a venue that we love to play at. Next, Tori Roze and The Hot Mess blew it out of the park. Last, all the way from Reno, Jelly Bread layed down the funk.

Thanks to the support of Cathryn Beeks of Listen Local San Diego, and KPRI’s “Homegrown Hour,” The Jesse Johnson Trio has been selected to open for Earl Thomas and The Blues Ambassadors @ KPRI’s “Green Flash Concert Series” on May 18th! Earl Thomas is an incredible soul singer and a world renowned song writer, having had his songs recorded by the likes of Etta James and Screamin Jay Hawkins.

The “Green Flash Concert Series” is held outdoors along the Pacific Ocean at Birch Aquarium. We are honored to receive this awesome opportunity to perform with a truly great band. Tickets are available for $25/person by contacting the ticket hotline directly at 858.534.4109

The JJTrio will be performing an “acoustic” set, with mellow guitars, upright and electric basses, and Elias playing various types of “acoustic” percusson. This show will sell out, so get your tickets ahead of time!
