Six months ago I started working with a very expensive business coach.

15 years ago I could barely make art, let alone money.

If you would have told me 5 years ago that I would be living in the middle of Europe, supporting other artists, making more money than I ever have, traveling, waking up every day totally lit up by my life and living my Creative Calling I would have told you to Shut the eff Up.

And then secretly yearned for it.

I would never have admitted that I wanted these things, and a beautiful studio, and nice clothes, and to travel first class. Never.

I was too busy thinking that playing small was more virtuous.

Thinking that my only mission in life was to be an artist and suffer.

Really. Of course I wouldn’t have said it in that way because I wasn’t even aware that I had taken an unconscious vow to live that way.

Heck, a year ago I couldn’t have wrote this email. I would have been too worried that you’d think I was selfish or shallow.

I believed that I had to suffer.

I was too busy painting and slaying inner dragons to worry about making money. I thought I was happy, and somehow more virtuous for playing small—for not wanting much.

But the truth is that I’ve always known I was here to do big things, and you want to know what else I know?—that you are here to do big things too.

Everyday I watch, and connect with other artists who are struggling to believe that they have value; struggling to believe that they could ever quit their shitty day job and find the time and energy to make their art—brilliant, amazing talented artists who are still buying into this belief that it has to be hard, that we have to starve, that they can’t live the life that they’ve always dreamt of.

It doesn’t break my heart so much as it pisses me off.

Whoever taught us this must have been scared sh!tless of how much power we really have.

Because this pisses me off, and has for a very long time, I’m doing something about it, which is exactly what I want you to do.

I want you to get mad, throw sh!t if you have to and wake up to the fact that the life you’re living now is not the one that you’re meant to live.

I want you to decide that it’s time to believe in yourself, to stop playing small, to step into your greatness and wow the world with what you have to offer.

Yes I’m an artist, but I’m also part cheerleader and part ass-kicker because I believe in you and your miraculous vision and also, because I KNOW THAT THE MYTH OF THE STARVING ARTIST IS COMPLETE AND UTTER B.S.

You might not know it, you might not see it, but I promise you that it is. I, and everyone else who chooses to write their own story knows it.

It’s time for you to get the tools you need to create a life you love.

It’s time for you to: Make your art. Claim your Calling. Monetize your Mission.

Make art and make money.

You know how they say that the way you do anything is the way you do everything?

Imagine how different your life would be if you knew you could make art and money?

Just last week an artist-client told me that she would really like to join my program and was “hoping” that the universe would bring funds.

To which I said, “Make it happen, lady. Make it happen. It’s time.”

She then proceeded to take that fire that I lit under her ass, had a sale of her paintings, sold 4, received 2 commissions and told me 8 days later that she was ready to sign up.

Like that.

That is how you make art and make money.

It’s taken me 15 years of being an artist and a lifetime of not realizing that ‘I create my reality’ to get this.

Another artist-client is manifesting the career of her dreams left and right, and money, and international opportunities, one step at a time using these same principles:

Know what you desire. Raise your vibration. Say yes. Get inspired. Take inspired action.

This is not about waiting and wishing, this is about saying, “Hell yes I am!”

I have something big and precious to tell you today. I have an announcement to make.

Part of me wants to stand on a hilltop and just scream it and tell you flat out, but like all big and precious things, it’s best if we start with a story.

When I was a little girl I wanted to be three things: a teacher, a diver and a pilot. I never actually wanted to be an artist until I realized, much later, that I had to make art.

I spent years trying to figure out just what I was here to do. I went to art school, then taught English in Korea and stopped making art for a while when I was there. But something was missing. For as much as I loved teaching, I was drawn back to the art making. Always the art.

I kept getting the internal message that art had to be at the center of my life.

So I put it there and did everything I could to be an artist. Eventually I enrolled in an obscure and life-changing program called Transformative Art.

While I was there, one of my professors asked me what I would do after grad school—”Would I go on to teach?” When I told him that I never wanted to teach someone how to paint. He said, “Well what else is there for you to do?”

I didn’t know how prophetic that sentence would be, but then again, most things he said were.

What else is there for you to do?

See the problem was that I thought I had to be one thing. Either a teacher. Or an artist. Or a healer. And for as simple as it might sound, I couldn’t figure out how to bring all of my gifts together and share that with the world.

I knew that I was here to do big things. I made amazing things happen, but my sense of self was in the shitter.

Like all good stories, there was a defining moment.

It involved a total nervous breakdown, and a deep, deep, dark night of the soul. We’re talking—can’t keep my shit together—at all—dark night of the soul that lasted for nearly a year.

What I didn’t realize then was that this was the catalyst for the most important thing I would ever do, and the very thing that I’m sharing with you today.

I did something simple, yet utterly profound.

I said yes, once and for all, to living the life and being the artist that I was here to be. I decided that from that moment forward I would not take No for an answer. I would not pretend that there was anything else for me to do other than fully, and wholeheartedly put my art at the center. I would not wait for permission, or the right conditions, or anything else to come along and tell me that I was finally ready.

I said yes, to my desires, to my vision, to my Creative Calling.

And that’s when it all started to shift . . .

That’s when the beginning of what I have to share with you today—the culmination of my heart, my ability to see the genius in others, my passion for the creative process, my belief that Art is an Act of Becoming—that’s when all of it started to shift into something miraculous . . .

After 15 years of making my art, following my calling, saying yes to myself, I’ve given birth to something that I couldn’t be more honoured and proud to share with you all.

And do you want to know why? Because I know that it can do the very same thing for you that it did for me.

Learn how to productively listen to your Inner Critic.

I was talking to my dear friend and colleague Alice Aird this morning, preparing for our Free Inner Critic Training Call on Wednesday night and wouldn’t you know it—we had to apply the very medicine we’re about to teach!

Most of this past weekend I was full on grappling with one of my Inner Voices—the one that berates me for not doing more all. the. time . . .

Yeah, her. She was definitely calling, but I didn’t want to listen.

Listening to the Inner Critic has the power to transform everything.

Naturally, Alice reminded me of the very exercise that we’re going to be sharing with you all on Wednesday. Before I even had a chance to do it, the part of me that was screaming so loudly started to settle down.

Why? Because these Parts of ourselves that scream so loudly want what we all want—some genuine, compassionate, “what do you have to say”, air-time.

Once I stopped wishing her away, I saw how much wisdom she held.

Your Inner Critic is not to be banished, silenced, or wished-away. There is a way to come into right relationship with this part of yourself that just wants some attention.

This is the very thing that we’ll be showing you on the call:

Like a child crying out for attention, our Inner Critics also need some attention.

It was so bad that there were years when I stopped painting altogether.

It wasn’t until I learned what my dear friend and colleague Alice Aird and I are about to share with you that my relationship to my art, and my Inner Critic changed forever.

I had no idea back then, that the Inner Critic held the key to my most authentic art.

How to listen when Your Creative Calling won’t stop calling.

I was walking to the studio this morning and started to feel uneasy. The inner shit talk was kicking in. This time it had to do with my outfit. “What were you thinking?, You look ridiculous, blah, blah, blah…”

Now, if this would have happened 5 years ago I would have spent the morning in a tailspin or turned around, gone home and changed.

But I didn’t.

Instead I did what I’ve come to discover is the very thing that art making is for.

We make art to move towards wholeness.

We make art to transform that thing that we’ve dismissed and left out in the cold into something else.

Something more whole.

Something more cohesive.

Something that speaks our truths and inspires others to speak theirs.

Instead of panicking and changing I tapped into what was there.

I asked questions. I examined the feelings and let myself be really curious.

And do you know what I started to feel?Inspired and in my skin.

Not because of what I was wearing, not because my external appearance had changed, but because my relationship to it changed.

Art making has the power to do this.

If there is one thing that art making has taught me it’s that our most authentic work lies in letting the discomfort come out to play.

Not long after, when my pencil finally hit the canvas, I allowed those feeling of discomfort to be whatever they were. I let my experience be fodder and fuel for the process.

I became the being who knows how to work with whatever is arising and use it as grist for the creative mill.

I became artist.

Becoming Artist // Making your most authentic art.

So often we don’t get there because we spend all of our time resisting what we’d rather not feel.

We’re afraid to bring our full selves to the table and so our art, like our experience of ourselves, can’t reflect back the totality of who we are.

Letting your full self come out to play is the recipe for making the art that truly feels like your own. That’s a tweetable!

Becoming Artist // Art is an Act of Becoming

I was in the middle of painting yesterday when a new awareness came flooding in and I knew that I had to share it.

It has everything to do with why we want to make our art so badly, and why we do so many things to make that seem impossible.

It has everything to do with who you are here to become and why art making is at the heart of that.

Am I really an artist?

If you’re reading this you’ve surely thought before, “What’s wrong with me?” “Why can’t art making be easier?” and “Am I really an artist???”

What I’m about to share will hopefully give you permission to honour the magnitude of why art making is so central to who you are, and why it’s often a source of so much discomfort.

Avoiding what we most desire.

It was Monday morning – my time to paint. The water was in the paint bucket, the music was playing, and I started to paint. I was doing exactly what I wanted to be doing.

But within minutes I was squirming. Squirming, avoiding, and definitely not being fully present.

This behavior jumped out at me more than usual because lately there’s been a strong pull to paint more and go deeper – to give myself permission to indulge more fully in the pleasure that painting brings.

And that my friends, is where the connection lay!

I saw that my squirming was an attempt to actually avoid having more of this pleasure in my life! On the one hand this sounds silly, and on the other hand it is utterly and profoundly true.

For most of us, the thought of expanding into what we most desire, in any way, and becoming the people we most long to be, scares the pants off us.

And so we do something quite normal – we avoid it.

Does this mean that I’m not an artist?

I used to think that I wasn’t really an artist because of this. I used to envy people who could go to their studios and tell tales of their experiences of “time seeming to stop” and “blissful states of consciousness.”

I used to long for art making to be that kind of escape.

But the truth is that it never has been. While the moments of pleasure have expanded, and the ease of art making has multiplied exponentially over the years, there will always be moments when it brings me to my knees and asks me to go to the next level.

We are not here to use art as an escape, but in fact, to bring us face to face with who it is that we are here to become.
That’s a tweetable!

And because of this, we come face to face with everything that is standing in the way of our becoming.

Which is why it’s sometimes so painfully painful.

And why we avoid it.

And why we would at times prefer to run away.

It’s not because you’re NOT an artist, but because you’re the kind of artist who is using art to become more aware, awake, whole, alive and conscious.

Art, for you, for us, is an act of becoming. It is the force that brings all of your unhealed baggage, past trauma, tendencies to avoid, fears – all of it, right to the surface so that you can become the artist and the glorious being that you are here to be.

Art is the force that will usher you into the life that you are most meant to live, which means that you’re going to have to own up to, and heal all the things that stand in the way of that.

You’re perfectly normal as far as I’m concerned, and profoundly brave.

This is the very territory that we must enter in order to become the artists and leaders that help others to do the same.
