Where Is Isla Holbox?

Holbox is located along the Gulf of Mexico, right off the coast of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. Specifically, it belongs to the Mexican state of Quintana Roo and lies within the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas.

This location allows it to have some of Mexico’s most beautiful beaches. In fact, along with Playa Santispac in Baha California and the beautiful beaches in Campeche, Holbox has some of my favorite stretches of sand in Mexico!

Hurricane season in Holbox 

August marks the beginning of the hurricane season in Holbox and the rest of the region. This is the worst time to visit Holbox when the island experiences rainstorms and inclement weather that can disrupt your plans.

Holbox has dirt roads, which get washed out during the rainy season, making it challenging to get around without getting covered in mud. 

Precipitation during the hurricane season is usually more intense than during May and June when rains tend to be more sporadic and happen in the afternoon.

Isla Holbox weather in April 

April is the transition month between winter and summer in Holbox. Temperatures continue to rise during this month to about 70°F to 93°F (21°C to 34°C). April is the last month before the island starts to get very hot and humid.

Isla Holbox weather in August 

The weather in Isla Holbox, Mexico during August is sticky, with humidity levels continuing to rise throughout the month.

Additionally, hurricane season officially kicks off at the end of August—which is also the hottest month of the year in Holbox, with temperatures ranging from 75°F to 93°F (24°C to 34°C).

Like the rest of the Yucatán Peninsula, Holbox has two seasons: the dry season and the wet season. 

Places to go in Holbox during the rainy season

If you visit Holbox during the rainy season when you can’t always enjoy the beach, consider going to places on the mainland like Valladolid and Merida to explore the culture of the Yucatán.

Valladolid is a designated Pueblo Mágico, famous for its cenotes and pastel-colored architecture. It’s also a gateway to Chichen Itza and you can easily combine the two activities. 

Merida is the capital of Yucatán and is known for its rich culture and history. In fact, it’s the cultural hub of the peninsula and is the second-largest city in the region after Cancun. The city boasts an ornate central plaza, several landmarks, and museums. 

If you are looking to get some authentic Mexican crafts created by local artisans, there’s no better place than La Casa De Las Artesanias de Yucatan in Merida, a large gallery-style store where you can purchase goods made by Indigenous groups from across Mexico, including Yucatán. 

Things to do in Holbox during the rainy season

See Holbox wildlife. While Loreto has whale watching, Holbox has swimming with whale sharks!

If you’re interested in seeing whale sharks or sea turtles, the best time to go to Isla Holbox is July and August, which is peak whale shark season.

This is when these gentle giants migrate to the area to feed on plankton. Adult whale sharks can reach up to 41,000 pounds and up to 33 feet in length. 

And while they are huge, swimming next to them is perfectly safe as long as you keep your distance and don’t bother them. When booking a whale shark tour, carefully read other travelers’ reviews to make sure you support an ethical company. 

While you have the highest chance of seeing whale sharks during this time of the year, there is never a guarantee. Watch out for companies that make promises or tell you that they follow whale sharks closely. Whale sharks are protected by law, and all tour operators have to maintain a safe distance. 

Similarly, sea turtle nesting season occurs from May to September, with peak nesting activity usually in June and July.

Restaurant hop. Isla Holbox is home to many delicious restaurants, some offering trendy vibes and others providing a more local experience. You can even gamify the experience by challenging yourself to find the best tacos on the island.

My personal favorite for this is Barba Negra, which serves up fish and shrimp tacos packed with filling.

Things to pack for the rainy season in Holbox

The rainy season in Holbox Island means you might need to pack some additional gear, including:

Waterproof jacket. This is a must-have in case it starts raining. I like this lightweight, packable rain jacket from 33,000ft.

Mosquito repellent. Regardless of the season, pack mosquito repellent on your trip to Holbox to avoid bites. Grand Tongo’s DEET-Free Insect Repellent Spray offers 12-hour protection and comes in TSA-friendly sizing.

Quick drying clothes. When visiting Holbox during the rainy season, bring lightweight clothes from materials that dry fast. 

Swimsuit. While the rainy season brings more precipitation to Holbox, you can still enjoy some water activities and go for a swim. Personally, I love the bathing suits and beach coverups from Aqua Eve (they actually give you full bottom coverage!).

Sunscreen. Especially as Isla Holbox is located within the Yum Balam Nature Reserve, it’s important to pack reef-friendly sunscreen for your trip — like Badger’s Mineral Difference, which holds a Protect Land + Sea Certification.

Pros & cons

The dry season in Holbox is from December through April. It’s the best time on the island when thousands of visitors arrive to enjoy the perfect sunny weather in this tropical paradise. 

Pros:

• Plenty to do. Businesses are in full swing in Holbox during the dry season, as it’s when most tour agencies, restaurants, and hotels make their money. Unlike summer months, when some places close for the season, winter is when you have the most options on the island.

Perfect weather. If you are looking for picture-perfect weather, the dry season is the best time to visit Holbox. 

• Great parties. Depending on what you are looking for, this could be a pro or con. The dry season is when most people travel to Holbox, and you can be sure that you will find some great beach parties on the island in many bars and restaurants. You can also enjoy the many Holbox beach clubs.

Cons:

High prices. The peak months in Holbox are December and January when prices are the highest. It’s a busy time for international tourism when many people visit to escape the cold weather in their home countries. 

• Crowds. Holbox can get very crowded in winter, especially during holidays like New Year and Christmas, when many domestic and international tourists come to celebrate. 

Tougher to spot wildlife. If you travel to Holbox during the high season, it could be tougher to spot wildlife, as many animals move away from busy parts of the island and go deeper into the Yum Balam Reserve. 

Places to go in Holbox during the dry season

Yum Balam Nature Reserve. One of the best places to visit in Holbox, Yum Balam is a protected area that can be visited with a guided tour from Holbox. I booked a kayaking tour of Yum Balam during my trip and had a great time paddling through the mangroves and spotting different animals like crocodiles, flamingoes, and other birds. 

Islands around Holbox. Taking a Classic 3 Island Tour is one of the most popular excursions from Holbox and includes visits to Yalahau Cenote, Punta Mosquito (Mosquito Point), and Isla Pasión (Passion Island). At certain times of the year, you might also visit Isla Pájaros (Bird Island) instead of Punta Mosquito.

Things to do in Holbox during the dry season

High season is the best time to bask in the sun on Holbox beaches, enjoy a lively atmosphere at Holbox restaurants, and take tours. Below are some of the most popular activities on Holbox during the high season:

Spot bioluminescence. Isla Holbox is one of the handful of places in Mexico where you can see bioluminescence—a natural phenomenon that occurs when plankton in the water emit light through a chemical reaction.

The easiest way to see bioluminescence is by joining a guided bioluminescent kayaking tour; but, you can also take a quick trip to Playa Punta Cocos on the west side of Holbox.

I was able to see bioluminescence on Playa Holbox at night. All you need to do is walk into the water and make movements with your hands to see the glowing plankton. 

Take a kite surfing lesson. Isla Holbox is one of the best spots for kite surfing in the Yucatán Peninsula thanks to plenty of wind and shallow waters. There are several kite surfing schools around the island where you can hire an instructor or you can book a kitesurfing lesson in advance here.

Rent a paddleboard. Early morning is the best time to paddle board around Holbox when the island has calm, glass-like waters. There are numerous places where you can rent a paddleboard or even book an aquatic adventure tour, like Kayaking Holbox.

Rent a bicycle. Biking is a popular way to get around Holbox thanks to the compact size of this island. You can rent one at places like Bikes Holbox.

Worst Time To Visit Holbox Island

The worst time to visit Isla Holbox is during September and October, which are the wettest months of the year. This is also when activities are limited and many businesses close down.

If you are looking for a more relaxed getaway, it’s a good idea to skip Holbox during major holidays like Christmas, New Year’s, and Easter when the island gets busy and there are usually loud parties and music.

If you prefer a quieter experience, consider visiting during the shoulder months of May and November when the weather is still pleasant but there are fewer tourists.

To reach Holbox Island, you can take a ferry from the town of Chiquilá, which is approximately a two-hour drive from Cancún. Chiquilá and Holbox are separated by a small channel and the boat ride between them takes about 20-30 minutes.

Another option is to take a flight from Cancun International Airport (CUN) to Holbox Airport (HOL). It’s a more expensive but much faster option that saves you hours on the road. 

Other options for getting to Chiquilá from Cancun Airport include taking an ADO Bus (which you can book on BusBud), a shared shuttle, or a private shuttle. You can also take a taxi, though this is not recommended as it’s overpriced.

When do you think is the best time to visit Holbox Island, Mexico?

Like most of those who find themselves regularly on the road, I’m obsessed with finding deals, discovering travel hacks and earning points.

Over the years I’ve discovered a number of travel booking tips, secrets and tools that allow you to find cheap flights and great deals on accommodation.

Flights

1. Use Google Flights As A One-Stop-Shop

There are so many benefits to using Google Flights to book cheap flights over other booking engines. Along with browsing flights by outbound/inbound times and number of stops, I love that you can see a map view of a region to compare prices (i.e., “flights to South America”), with the ability to filter by airline, flight duration and budget.

A fare calendar is another helpful tool allowing you to see exactly what days in a given time frame are cheapest to fly, as is a Tip bar that takes your search and shows less expensive but similar options. Once you find a flight you like, book it or save the itinerary to allow Google to monitor for price drops. 

Best of all, even though you’re on an aggregator platform, it sends you to the airline’s website to book direct, meaning you won’t miss out on your frequent flyer miles and points.

2. Set Up Fare Alerts On Airfarewatchdog

Do yourself a favor and head to Airfarewatchdog right now to sign up for their newsletter and flight alerts. If there’s a route you fly frequently or are looking to fly in the future you can sign up for fare alerts for that specific route (instead of getting general fare deals and hoping yours will be in there).

I love the personalization of their offerings, as well as the advice given on their blog. I also follow on Twitter (@airfarewatchdog) to get real-time flight deal notifications and have the free app to have access to the great features right on my phone.

3. Use AirHelp To Get Reimbursed For Flight Delays

Okay, so this hack is less focused on the actual booking, but is still part of the pre-trip experience. While rules vary by country, you can often be compensated for flight delays — a fact many fliers are unaware of.

So how can you collect? My favorite tool is AirHelp, which does the work to get you compensated for your discomfort. If they get you money they keep 25% of the claim reimbursement; if they don’t get you money, you owe them nothing.

4. Know When To Book Using Hopper

What sets this website and app apart from other flight booking platforms is its attention to industry data and use of predictive pricing, telling you exactly when to book to get amazing deals. 

Search filters allow you to set a budget, number of stops and deals ranging from “Great—only the lowest fares” to “All—even overpriced.” Their “Ways to Save” tab gives insight into what a great deal for your route looks like, travel date comparisons and when to book.

5. Enjoy Price Alerts & Flexible Deals With Skyscanner

Along with fare alerts, the main reason I absolutely love Skyscanner is the option to enter your dates and location of origin and enter “Everywhere” as the destination. From there, you’ll be shown a list in descending order of where to fly on a budget and about how much it will cost. If you’re the adventurous traveler type it’s a great way to throw some spontaneity into your trip planning.

6. Know When To Book Your Flight

According to Vice President and General Manager of fly.com, Warren Chang, Tuesdays and Wednesdays are typically the best days to search for flights because this is when airlines often release their sale fares. Moreover, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays are normally the cheapest days to fly. Often flying on the actual holiday, rather than the day before or after, can lead to better prices and smaller crowds in the airport.

Katelyn O’Shaughnessy, CEO and founder of Travefy, also added in a Yahoo! Travel article that specifically Tuesdays after 3pm six weeks out is the “magic hour” when you’ll score the best deals for both flights and hotels. Moreover, booking after midnight means a large inventory with great rates.

8. Switch Travel Dates To Avoid Cancellation Fees

Another great tip by O’Shaughnessy from the same article suggests that, if you’re past the penalty-free hotel cancellation booking window, change the date for the future. Then, call back to speak with a new person, and cancel. This tactic doesn’t always work, but it doesn’t hurt to try.

9. Bid On Hotel Rooms With Priceline

If you’re okay not knowing exactly where you’ll be staying when you book, hotel bidding sites like Priceline can be great for scoring a really, really good deal. Don’t worry too much about the mystery side of things, as the important factors — the star rating and the location — are disclosed before you hand over your credit cards digits.

10. Download HotelTonight For Last-Minute Deals

Last-minute hotel booking apps like HotelTonight can save you a bundle if you’re flexible. They basically take unsold hotels up to a week out and offer them at a discounted rate. The closer to the stay date the better deals you’ll find. I love using HotelTonight while traveling and simply clicking my location and seeing a real-time map of what’s nearby with prices. 

11. Book With Aggregators With Loyalty Programs

Not everyone is loyal to one hotel brand, which is why aggregator sites like Hotels.com and Expedia have huge inventories and give you points for booking with them. Hotels.com gives you a free night after booking 10 nights, while Expedia has Travel with Points, a free membership program where you earn points to potentially bring your booking down to $0.

12. Leave A Note On Your Reservation Form

You know that box on your reservation form asking if you have additional notes that you typically skip over to click book? Next time, write something. If you’re looking for a room with a view or something special, ask for it. Often, you’ll get these perks at no extra charge, or you can say something like “If it’s available when we check in I’d love a room with a beach view” or, if you feel awkward about outright asking for free perks, “Is there a way to get free Wi-Fi if I share something about the hotel on Twitter?”

This is also another instance where it pays to book direct. If a hotel sees you’ve booked directly with them rather than through an OTA/third party they’ll be much more likely to offer a free upgrade or amenity, whether you ask in the reservation form or at check in.

13. Become An Instagram Elite

Since 2016, we have seen a lot more hotels offering free Wi-Fi, if for nothing else than the free publicity it garners with selfie-obsessed, hashtag-loving Millennials who will likely take photos around the property and then share them on social media.

Many hotels even offer rewards points, perks and free stays to Instagram sharers, especially those with a big following. For instance, you can earn IHG One Rewards points for sharing, while the 1888 Hotel in Sydney used to offer free stays to those with over 10,000 followers. These are just a few of numerous hotels taking part in this sort of initiative.

14. Score Airline Miles With Hotel Reservations Via Rocketmiles

Who doesn’t love earning free airline points on top of their hotel stay?

Travelers can browse Rocketmiles‘ selection of properties and see in the listing not only the hotel ratings, photos and information, but up to 5,000 miles per night (or more if there’s a special promotion; I’ve even seen enough for a free one-way domestic flight) through frequent flyer programs (and OpenTable) like JetBlue True Blue, HawaiianMiles, Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan, Southwest Rapid Rewards, Virgin America Elevate and more. 

15. Become A Jetsetter Member

Jetsetter is free to join, and once you’re a member you’ll have access to hand-curated properties, often on the luxurious side, and daily deals averaging 20-30% off, though some are lower and higher, too. If you allow Jetsetter to connect with Facebook it will also personalize recommendations for you, although when you sign up it also asks you your travel preferences for this, as well.

16. Tell The Hotel About Special Occasions

Having a birthday? An anniversary? A honeymoon? Let the hotel know beforehand, as they’ll often throw in some free perks to help you celebrate and up their customer satisfaction rating.

17. Get In A Business Travel Mindset On Weekends

While business travel is often thought of as being more expensive than those of us slumming it in economy and staying in hostels, weekends often mean cheaper rates on business class flight tickets and business hotels, or hotels in a city’s financial district. Do some research.

I’ve actually used flight aggregators to compare air tickets and have seen business class tickets on one airline cheaper than economy tickets for the same route and weekend dates on another.

18. Join The Loyalty Program (And Actually Become Loyal)

This is probably the easiest thing you can start doing today if you haven’t already. Do you have an airline you frequently fly or a go-to hotel brand? Join their free rewards program. There is literally not a single reason not to do this. It’s like not taking free money, as you earn extra points for hotels you’re already staying in and flights you’re already taking.

Before I even had the Delta credit card I was a SkyMiles member, and have flown first class for free based on frequent flier status and have enjoyed numerous free flights. Moreover, I joined Kimpton Karma, and even on the bottom tier — aka just for joining before you spend any money — you could get free Wi-Fi, a $10 minibar credit, a birthday offer, dining deals and the chance to earn free nights.

You also earn points for taking part in fun on-property initiatives like their free wine hour and bike rentals. A bit unrelated, but for food I’m a fan of booking through OpenTable. Even if it’s a restaurant I know I don’t need a reservation for I’ll make one on OpenTable for the points.

These are just a few examples of thousands, maybe millions, of free programs that help you travel for free.

19. …Get A Co-Branded Credit Card

If you want to really maximize those points get the co-branded card for the brands you frequent. While there’s typically an annual fee it’s often waived the first year, and the perks and points outweigh the cost of the fee (though do the math to make sure it’s worth it for you).

There’s also often sign up bonuses, which can be worth up to a week in accommodation or even a free flight if it’s big enough. Shop around and see where your awards will be maximized.

20. Get A Credit Card That Lets You Transfer Points

A universal travel credit card that lets you transfer points to hotels and flights is great for flexibility. A few to check out: Chase Sapphire Reserve Card (here’s the credit card review; this is my personal favorite), Citi ThankYou® Premier and Amex EveryDaySM.

There are also co-branded cards that do this well, like the Starwood Preferred Guest American Express, which allows travelers to use points at hotels in 100+ countries and with 30+ partner airlines. Moreover, transferring 20,000 Starpoints to parter airlines gives you a 25% bonus.

21. Download Flash Sale Apps Like Groupon And LivingSocial

When a business hosts a deal on Groupon and LivingSocial they’re typically coaxed to offer a discount of 50%+. If you check under their getaway tabs you’ll find hotel deals and often uber discounted package travel deals that include flights. Just make sure to read the fine print before booking for blackout dates and other stipulations.

22. Know About Best Rate Guarantee

If you’re like me and like to book direct, but sometimes see cheaper prices listed on OTAs, it’s helpful to know about airline and hotel Best Rate Guarantee policies. Especially with hotels, they’ll often not only match the price listed on the OTA to get you to book direct, but may provide further discounts and perks. For example, while Best Western matches the lower rate and provides a $100 Best Western gift card, Hyatt discounts the rate by 20% extra off.

23. Browse Like A Foreigner

While I’ve never tried this trick myself, I have plenty of travel friends who have, and have scored great deals. Try browsing under a different country page and currency and compare to what pops up when you search under your own home and currency, taking conversion rates into consideration. Also make sure if you do end up booking in another currency you use a credit card that doesn’t charge fees for this (for instance, I use the Capital One Venture Card).

24. Avoid Traveling During The Tourist Season

This may be obvious, but it’s worth reminding everyone of the benefits of booking flights and hotels during shoulder or off season to save money. Just because a place isn’t crawling with tourists during certain months doesn’t mean it isn’t worth going to.

Do some research into what makes it off-season (and make sure the attractions and experiences of interest are open) and see if it’s worth it. You’ll likely end up loving the fact you’ve escaped the crowds and can have a more individual, personal trip.

25. Become A AAA Member

Not only is AAA amazing for car owners — run into any issue on the road and that paid membership will be well worth every penny — but you’ll notice when you book a flight or hotel there’s often a box to enter your AAA membership ID. Travelers typically save 5-10% on travel with this.

26. Delete Your Browser Cookies Or Switch Browsers

There’s a big debate in the travel community over whether doing this can actually save you money by showing you better prices. Why this is thought to work is that the cookies see how much you search a route—aka how in demand it is and how badly you want it—therefore increasing the price. Whether you believe it or not, it doesn’t hurt to try. Just ask Johnny Jet, who saved almost $200 by switching from Safari to Internet Explorer.

Bus travel in South America is the most budget-friendly and scenic way to get around the continent.

After spending 13 weeks navigating the long-distance bus routes through Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Chile, and Ecuador, I learned that the secret to a successful trip boils down to three things:

• flexibility with your schedule
• packing for self-sufficiency
• investing in “luxury” classes for overnight hauls (if it’s in your budget)

While it can be confusing and uncomfortable if you’re winging it, being prepared helps a lot. To help, I’m sharing essential tips to help you feel confident—and even enjoy—exploring South America by bus!

1. Don’t Book Early

Yes, you read that right. When traveling around South America it’s really easy to purchase your ticket the day you decide to depart.

When backpacking South America, plans can change quickly. You may fall in love with a city and decide to stay longer than you planned, or you might meet a group of travelers going somewhere else that sounds interesting and you want to tag along.

Give yourself room to have spontaneous adventures and wait to book your bus ticket until you’re completely sure of your next move.

2. Check The Departures Timetable When You Arrive

That being said, it’s a good idea to write down the departure timetable for the route you want as soon as you arrive at the bus station.

It’ll save you a trip back to inquire later, as well as aggravation if you realize no buses are running on the time/date you were hoping for.

6. Bring Bathroom Essentials

Even if there is a bathroom, you’ll typically need to bring your own toilet paper—which is handy to have on you whether you’re riding the bus or not.

Building on this, packing hand sanitizer and a small trash bag can also come in handy.

Personally, I also found it helpful to pack a face mask, as sometimes you may encounter some unpleasant smells, especially if you’re seated near the bathroom or you’re on a bus with a lot of winding turns (read: vomit inducing).

7. Be Prepared For Winding Roads

While not all bus routes will make you nauseous, there were a few where many passengers were puking due to the hair pin turns.

One of my craziest South American bus stories was between Cuzco and Lima in Peru, when I actually got puked on by another passenger. It was unpleasant to say the least.

Even if your bus does have a bathroom, it will be relatively simple and single use. So, be prepared to be sick in your seat if needed.

Bring a puke bag, anti-nausea tablets, and anti-nausea wrist bands or patches. You might also pack stomach settling foods like crackers, bread, and green apples.

9. Bring Snacks

Even if food is served, however, you should still bring snacks. You don’t want to be stuck on a 20-hour bus ride with a rumbling stomach.

Moreover, it’s nice to have a backup plan if you don’t like the food being served on the bus.

10. Expect Delays

Just because a bus says it will depart at 3pm doesn’t mean it will. Be on time in case it does; however, plan with the thought in mind that it will probably be delayed, or at least late in getting you to your destination.

11. Bring Entertainment

While South America is home to some of the most inspiring and diverse scenery on the planet, there’s only so long you can stare out the window and not be bored.

Download offline games on your phone, charge your iPod, bring a journal to write in, pack a book and some crossword puzzles, and try to keep yourself entertained while on board.

Another idea is to interact with the locals on board to have an added cultural experience on the bus.

Personally, I always enjoyed having a language exchange with the person sitting next to me to sharpen my Spanish skills.

12. Prepare For Extreme Climates

Not only in your South American destination, but also on the bus itself.

In my experience, buses were often extremely cold or very warm. I recommend asking the bus company what the temperature will be like, but also preparing for both just in case.

To do this, wear layers that can easily be taken on and off, and keep a scarf shawl in your backpack, which can double as a small blanket.

On that note, let’s dive into our list of tips.

1. Get Travel Insurance

Even the most careful travelers face unexpected challenges like lost luggage, flight delays, or medical emergencies. Having travel insurance gives you peace of mind knowing you’re protected no matter what happens.

Moreover, if you ever feel uncomfortable, move to a very public area—and even start chatting with someone to make it look like you’re traveling together. Doing this has saved me in potentially scary situations quite a few times.

6. Sign Up For The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program

If you’re a U.S. citizen, the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program is a free program designed to help keep travelers safe.

By entering your information into their system before you leave, the government is then better able to assist you in the event of an emergency.

You’ll also be able to subscribe to receive travel warnings and alerts about your destination(s).

It can be tempting to wander off-trail for that perfect view or photo, but it’s rarely worth the risk. Staying on marked paths not only helps preserve natural habitats but also ensures you don’t get lost and makes it easier for others to find you in an emergency.

I never hike solo—or even with a group—without AllTrails+, which lets you download offline maps so you can navigate safely even when you lose signal (which happens often in remote or forested trekking areas).

Always let someone know your planned route and estimated return time before heading out. Solo hiking preparation and navigation tools like this can make all the difference between a smooth adventure and a stressful situation.

Along with being able to ask where the nearest bathroom is, how to order food, and the proper way to greet someone, it is important to know how to ask for help.

When I was hiking by myself in Ecuador, I had a very scary experience where an angry dog ran out of nowhere and acted aggressively toward me.

Instinctively, I grabbed a large rock and held it over my head in a threatening manner, stopping the dog from approaching but not willing him to go away. I began to scream “¡Ayúdeme!” (“Help me!”) at the top of my lungs. Some nearby farmers heard me and were able to get the animal away safely.

At the very least, have Google Translate installed on your phone for easier communication with locals.

12. Invest In Pickpocket-Proof Clothing

Having valuables out in plain sight when traveling makes you a walking target. In fact, I suggest leaving anything you can’t live without at home.

That being said, there are certain valuables like money, credit cards, debit cards, and cameras that are essential when traveling.

15. Don’t Assume Your Hotel Room Is Safe

16. Try To Blend In With The Locals

Instead of making it obvious that you’re a tourist, aim to move with confidence. The goal isn’t to hide who you are, but to avoid drawing unnecessary attention or accidentally offending anyone.

Research local customs and etiquette beforehand so you understand what’s considered polite—or disrespectful—and can navigate social situations smoothly.

For instance, in Japan it’s customary to remove your shoes before entering someone’s home, while in many Middle Eastern countries it’s considered respectful to dress modestly by covering shoulders and knees.

Dressing appropriately and carrying yourself confidently will help you feel more comfortable and welcomed wherever you go.

24. Avoid Public Transportation At Night

Public transportation can be a great way to save money and travel like a local, but late at night it’s best avoided—especially if you’re unfamiliar with the area.

Empty stations and dark stops can make you more vulnerable to theft or harassment. Instead, opt for a licensed taxi, a trusted rideshare app, or pre-arranged hotel transfer. Spending a bit more for safety is always worth it.

25. Don’t Post Online In Real Time

It’s tempting to share every detail of your trip in real time, but doing so can make you an easy target. Posting geotagged photos or revealing your location before you leave can let strangers know where you are — and that you’re alone.

Instead, share highlights after you’ve moved on to the next destination. Personally, I like to share about my trips once I’m back home and have had time to sift through my footage to find the best photos and clips!

There is a difference between travel insurance and the health insurance you have in your home country.

Yes, it’s important to have health insurance if you have a permanent address somewhere; but this won’t be enough once you leave home.

For instance, most travel insurance policies do not cover things like routine medical checkups, preventative care, cancer treatment or pre-existing conditions — though note SafetyWing does offer limited coverage for acute onset of pre-existing conditions.

On the flip side, your health insurance won’t cover lost luggage, trip interruption, and trip cancellation. Actually, most only offer limited medical coverage abroad and won’t cover evacuations, either.

1. An Unplanned Outpatient Medical Procedure

For me personally, I don’t really care about insurance for lost items, even though it’s nice to have.

What Should Nomad Travel Insurance Include?

As stated above, not all travel insurance policies are created equal. Here is what you should look for as a traveler or someone diving into the digital nomad life:

• Emergency medical expenses
• Getting you back home if needed
• Trip cancellation/interruption
• Trip delays and cancellation
• Baggage
• Lost, damaged or stolen possessions
• 24/7 emergency services

What is great about SafetyWing is that it was created by digital nomads to solve problems they saw with current travel insurance policies.

They noticed that not only were some of the existing options complicated and pricey for full-time travelers, but they also didn’t allow for much freedom, requiring users to know where they would be traveling and how long for in advance.

The SafetyWing founders saw the need for a more flexible, pay-as-you-go alternative.

They also wanted to offer a solution for nomads who are no longer residents of their home country and who don’t have health insurance there anymore.

So what exactly does SafetyWing travel medical insurance get you?

Here is their policy at a glance:

Robust coverage. With SafetyWing nomad travel insurance, you’ll be covered for unexpected illness or injury. This includes hospital, doctor, and prescription drug expenses (where eligible). Additionally, you’re covered for travel delays, lost checked luggage, non-professional sports and activities, if you need new accommodation due to a natural disaster, accidental death or dismemberment. I know, not fun to think about, but important.

Note that the above is just a small sampling of what is covered. It’s important to review their policy to gain a full understanding of exactly what is or isn’t covered.

A large network. You’ll be covered in any country in the world outside of Iran, North Korea or Cuba. Additionally, you’re not covered if you hold Cuban citizenship.

$250,000 of coverage. Their deductible is very low at $250, too.

Long-term coverage. You can stay subscribed to SafetyWing long-term and don’t need to know how long for in advance. While the policy expires after one year, you can then start a new one.

One overall deductible. Instead of needing to pay a deductible for every claim, you have one low overall deductible of $250 per year.

Access to private health care providers. If you’re in a destination where the public healthcare system isn’t great, this is an important option to have.

One really unique feature:

SafetyWing includes limited coverage in your home country, too, as long as the visit isn’t for an appointment to treat an ailment that began on your trip.

So if you’re home and an accident happens, you have 30 days of at-home coverage (or 15 days in the USA) during every 90-day cycle.

SafetyWing Considerations

Here are a few things to consider before purchasing a SafetyWing plan:

There is an age limit. Travelers over the age of 69 cannot purchase a plan.

If you decide later on to visit the US, you need a new plan. Because having US coverage is a different plan altogether, you can’t add this on later. This means you’ll need to cancel and re-purchase a new plan, and your deductible will reset.

How Does Travel Insurance Work?

The easiest way to share this is to describe my most recent experience purchasing SafetyWing travel insurance for a hiking trip through Nepal.

The actual process of buying the insurance has a more modern feel in comparison to most other carriers, as you can see here:

As you can also see above, it’s possible to purchase the travel insurance for less than one month to get a pro-rated policy.

One small problem I ran into had to do with me being a New York resident.

If you live in New York, Maryland, or Washington, you can’t physically be in your home state when you purchase due to local laws.

There is an easy fix though:

Purchase when you’re not physically in the state, such as at the start of your trip, or have a friend purchase for you through your account.

As you can see in the screenshot below, it just takes clicking a button to let SafetyWing know when you’re not physically in the state at the time of purchase. Easy peasy!

Once purchased, I was covered and able to enjoy hiking through Nepal’s Annapurna Region with confidence.

Luckily, I did not run into any issues on the trip and did not need to use the insurance, but it felt good knowing I had that safety net if needed.

Actually, when hiking in Nepal most tour operators will require you to have travel insurance that includes helicopter rescue, as if you get hurt in the mountains this will be your only option. SafetyWing includes this.

The Future Of SafetyWing Insurance

The company already has a great product, though they are currently working to launch the following features:

• Maximum payment limit raised to $1 million
• No deductible
• Electronics/valuables coverage
• Extreme sports coverage (many sports are already covered when practiced casually and with the right equipment, but they will be launching a more comprehensive option to include some of the current exclusions)

Additionally, along with their current travel medical insurance product, their goal is to eventually also offer comprehensive health insurance followed by a disability plan and then a pension plan.

In that case, maybe one day full-time travelers actually won’t need to keep their at-home health insurance policies.

This would be a definite game-changer in terms of health insurance for digital nomads.

That statement is particularly true for travelers from countries that void health insurance policies for people who aren’t in their home country for a minimum required amount of time.

Finding An Affordable Travel Insurance Plan

Unlike most travel insurance companies where you need to provide a number of details before speaking with someone and getting a quote, SafetyWing works like a subscription.

That is because instead of offering 10+ plans, they offer one robust policy solution.

Flying alone for the first time?

Boarding an airplane on your own and flying to a destination solo can be a daunting experience — though it doesn’t have to be.

I still remember flying by myself for the first time. It was a flight from New York City to Sydney, Australia, and I was a nervous wreck every step of the way. In fact, I don’t think I really slept for the week leading up to the flight!

But, in the end, it was all okay. Actually, it was better than okay, as traveling solo — both in the air and on the ground — is now my preferred way to explore the world.

Now, I realize solo flying confidence takes time to develop, and that there are steps you can take to feel more assertive and to ease anxiety.

So to help those who are nervous about flying on their own, I reached out to some of my favorite travel bloggers and asked them to share their best tips for flying alone for the first time. You’ll find their advice below.

Tips For Flying Alone For The First Time

Scared of flying alone? Here are some of the best tips for travelling alone for the first time!

1. Plan your first day of travel just right

Whether it’s your first time flying internationally alone or domestically, you’ll likely have a few jitters.

Some people like to travel without a plan and others like every minute of their trip mapped out. In my opinion, if you’re flying by yourself for the first time you should plan your first day or two of travel in a way that helps you ease into things.

This involves two key elements:

• Having accommodation booked in a safe and accessible area
• Not booking too many tours or activities

Knowing that you have a safe place to stay that is easy to get to and walkable to places like eateries and cafes gives you one less thing to worry about during air travel.

Moreover, being able to get familiar with your surroundings before needing to worry about schedules and meeting points can help you adjust to this new solo travel experience.

Keep in mind, while there are a number of solo travel pros and cons, one of the major benefits of traveling alone is getting to plan your itinerary however you’d like, so take advantage of that.

2. Learn TSA-friendly techniques for curbing first time flying anxiety

If you’re scared to travel alone or have never flown solo before, I highly recommend learning a few relaxation techniques, such as:

• doing breathing exercises (like these),
• listening to meditation recordings (like these),
• watching ASMR videos (my favorite ASMRist is GentleWhispering),
• completing puzzle games (like these),
• coloring (I love this adult coloring book),
• and reciting positive affirmations (like these).

It’s also wise to understand what can trigger your anxiety about flying alone. For instance, avoiding caffeine, junk food, and fried foods can help you keep anxiety at bay since gastrointestinal issues can cause anxiety to flare up.

This also means that when cabin crew come around with snacks and drinks you should avoid caffeine and sugar.

Skipping meals can also be an anxiety trigger, so make sure you’re eating regularly and incorporating nutritious foods.

Furthermore, exercising before your flight can help you work out any nervous energy and feel more relaxed after take-off.

Finally, if you’re feel really nervous, consider a fear of flying treatment. While I haven’t tried it myself, I have a friend who used hypnotherapy to cure her flight phobia — and it worked.

3. Check in online in advance so you can save time and reduce anxiety

It’s perfectly normal to feel overwhelmed and nervous about flying alone. One of the best ways to reduce that anxiety is by doing a little preparation in advance.

One of my top first time flying tips is to check in early. It is also an easy first step you can take. Airlines typically allow travelers to check in up to 24 hours before a flight’s departure time. You can download the airline’s app and check-in that way or go directly to the airline’s website.

Checking in early is a big timesaver and a great way to avoid long lines at the airport. If you’re not checking any luggage, it even allows you to skip the lines and head directly to the security checkpoint. It also ensures your seat on the flight, so you won’t have to worry about it being given to a stand-by passenger.

Early check-in allows you to pay in advance for any bags you’re checking, select your preferred seating options, and download digital copies of your boarding passes to your phone or device.

Once you have digital copies of your boarding passes for each flight, make sure you take a screenshot of each one to save on your phone! That way, even if your Wi-Fi doesn’t work at the airport, you’ll still be able to access a copy of your pass to show to the boarding attendants.

Make note that early check-in usually cuts off an hour or two before the flight’s actual departure time. After the cut-off, you’d need to go directly to the counter.

4. Carry a notebook and jot down all the steps

When flying solo for the first time, carry a notebook and jot down all the essential information that is particularly important when traveling internationally. Ensure you know the steps for baggage drop-off, security check-in, and organizing immigration documents, for example.

Additionally, it’ll be helpful to have information on speaking to border personal/customs officers, heading to the baggage claim carousel to pick your bags, getting to your pre-paid taxi, and finding the route to the train station to connect to your final destination once you land.

Pro tip:

Noting any necessary addresses is super important. For instance, you should write down the names of your hotels, their addresses, and their phone numbers — including any emergency contact numbers. This way you don’t have to rely on your memory or your cell phone battery. Instead, everything will be available to you at your fingertips. 

Having contact information handy (and on paper) is useful when you clear immigration as sometimes due to security reasons a smartphone may not be allowed. 

Also, if you wonder what to do when flying alone, writing in your notebook can be a great activity to entertain yourself and disconnect from the flying experience.

5. Download the app of the airline you are flying with

Nervous about flying alone for the first time? It can be daunting, but if you are well-prepared then it’s a piece of cake.

One of the first things that I like to do is download the app for whatever airline I am flying with.

Delta, American, United, and Frontier all have apps that I’ve personally used before. These apps allow you to manage multiple aspects of your trip.

You can use Google Flights to find great flight deals and then book directly through the airline’s app.

Or, if you’ve already booked a flight, then you can enter your name and flight details in the app so that it stores your trip information for easy access.

The app will send you an alert once it is time to check-in 24-hours before your flight. It walks you through the check-in process step-by-step and then allows you to add your boarding pass to your phone’s wallet when it’s ready.

If you aren’t checking a bag then you won’t even have to go to the counter when you arrive at the airport! Just go straight through security.

Once you are actually at the airport, the app sends you alerts if your flight gets delayed or any other information that you might need to know.

You’ll also find airport maps — which I’ve used more times than I can count. It is very helpful if you have a tight layover so you can check where you need to go before you get off the plane.

Some apps even have a “track my bag” feature if you know your bag tag number. The features vary depending on which company you are flying with but they are all incredibly helpful.

6. Schedule your flight to arrive in the morning

Flying internationally alone for the first time can be a scary experience for many people, but one of the best things you can do is schedule your flight so that you will arrive at your destination in the morning. 

This way, you will have lots of time to relax, become familiar with the place, figure out the transportation system, and ask for help if you need it. It is not fun to navigate a foreign city after sunset, not to mention it can be dangerous. 

Plus, travel is stressful enough as it is, so why would you want to limit the time you have? Arriving when it is light out gives you extra time to explore.

Additionally, you should have a clear plan on how to get from the airport to your accommodation for the first night. Write down the address of the place and do some research beforehand so that you know what to expect.

If you will be taking public transit, then you will definitely want to know the ticket price, how to buy and activate your ticket, transit schedules, where to get on, and where to get off.

These tips are simple but effective, and they will help you to feel more confident on your next trip.

7. Alternatively, arrive during daylight hours & book a taxi if running late

My tip for flying alone for the first time is to arrange a flight that lands at your destination during daylight hours. It’s always more nerve-wracking when you arrive in a new city/country after sunset and have to navigate an unfamiliar place in the dark. 

Touching down while the sun is up always makes me feel less anxious when transiting from the airport, especially when using public transport. I also prefer to get a sense of the neighborhood around my accommodation before nightfall. 

If it isn’t possible to arrive during the day or your flight gets delayed, book a taxi with a reputable provider. You might pay more but it is worth it to put your mind at ease. If it is too expensive, you can always wait in the airport until daylight.

8. Carry the right items to avoid a security delay

Is this your first time flying solo? One of my best tips for traveling alone is to carry the right items!

Airport guidelines are very strict in regard to the allowance of different types of items carried in luggage. If you are traveling on a flight for the first time, I suggest you check the list of items allowed in your checked luggage as well as in your carry-on luggage as suggested by the Airport Authority or the airline company.

Every airline has an allowance limit for luggage. Exceeding the limit leads to paying extra charges, so I would highly recommend being aware of the limit.

Secondly, carrying the right items will not only save you money and time but will also help avoid any further delay in the security line.

For instance, once I mistakenly kept my power bank in my checked luggage. Having reached a bit late at the airport, the scanning process was done in a rush. I was called back from the flight at the end when the security personnel found it in the checked luggage. It was removed eventually, and I was allowed to board the same flight.

But my checked luggage (backpack) couldn’t be loaded on the same flight. I received the backpack only the next day. Most of the security delays are because of the carrying of wrong items in both the hand and checked baggage.

Like the weight limit, different airlines have different items that they allow. Personal items such as lighters, scissors or metals with a pointed tip, sharp objects, flammable items, probable harmful sporting goods, tools, and essentially anything that has the potential to harm another passenger are strictly prohibited. It is sometimes confusing when a few of these items are allowed in the dismantled form in the checked luggage. 

You can carry laptops and chargers, power banks, books, water bottles, clothes, medicines, cash, and a few other items without any difficulty. In a nutshell, packing the right things in the right baggage will ease the process at the airport.

9. Arrive to the airport early 

Flying alone is daunting, especially if it is your first time. While it is not physically more difficult — in fact, it’s probably less physically demanding — it is psychologically more taxing.

There is no one to remind you about your belongings or share the stress of getting lost. The worst part of it all is the unnecessary stigma of traveling alone!

That is why it is very important that you arrive early at the airport. If you need to arrive three hours in advance, plan to arrive at least 30 minutes earlier than that. Need to arrive two hours in advance? Plan to arrive 2.5 hours in advance.

Did you miss your bus to the airport? Is your boarding gate on the other side of customs? Worry not. Having that extra time will allow you to compensate for any travel mishaps or unexpected occurrences. There is nothing more stressful than running to your boarding gate and hoping it won’t shut down on you.

When you know that things can go totally wrong and you will still have enough time to get on that flight, there is less reason to stress over every little detail. So make sure you arrive (extra) early next time you have a solo flight!

10. Avoid falling asleep and stay alert

Traveling can be quite exhausting, especially if you have a very early morning flight.

When flying alone, one of the most important things to keep in mind is that you probably shouldn’t fall asleep while waiting for your flight to board. If you don’t have a flying buddy, you need to be more alert than if you did for more than one reason.

If you fall asleep, you risk potentially missing your flight if no one around you is nice enough to alert you.

Apart from that, it might not be the best idea to leave some of your expensive luggage lying around while you take a long nap. While your chances of getting anything stolen are low, it can happen.

If you must sleep, you should at least take some precautions.

For one, set an alarm so that you can make it to your terminal on time, or if you’re already at the terminal, set it up before they start calling people in.

In terms of your gear getting stolen, opting to sleep in a paid lounge is typically safer than sleeping in the terminal.

Similarly, it’s worth investing in some anti-theft gear and pickpocket-proof clothing. Whether it’s sleeping at the airport or traveling to an unknown country as a foreigner, anti-theft gear can help prevent and discourage thieves.

11. Beat jetlag by sleeping on the plane

One of the worst parts of flying comes after the plane: jet lag. There’s nothing worse than arriving in a new location only to be unable to enjoy it because you’re exhausted out of your mind.

Most first-time fliers fear jet lag, but they don’t need to. It’s totally beatable if you know how to make the most of your flight and can learn how to sleep on a plane.

The best way to beat jet lag is to mentally switch to the time zone of the place you’re going before you even get on the plane. That means that if you are going to Paris from New York, you would operate five-to-six hours ahead. It might be breakfast time where you are, but if it’s already the afternoon in Paris, you should be acting like it’s the afternoon.

A big part of sticking to this schedule is figuring out when to sleep on the plane. You don’t want to time it incorrectly or you risk being stuck on the wrong schedule.

If you are flying on an overnight red-eye flight to the destination, it can be tempting to sleep through the entire plane ride. But that’s the worst thing you can do, as you’ll arrive later in the day and then won’t be tired by bedtime.

Instead, take a few hours rest, but try to get up as though you have “slept in” in Paris. This may mean you get less sleep and could be groggy on your first day, but a bit of caffeine will cure this until you’re ready for your first full night of sleep.

It’s important to do everything you can to get onto the new schedule so you can fully enjoy your trip and not suffer through jet lag that makes the whole journey a drowsy haze.

12. Always take a portable charger for your smartphone 

If you’re used to flying with someone else, the experience of doing it alone can be quite different. Being the first time at the airport alone feels awkward too.

Now, whether you are sitting on a bus or eating in a restaurant chances are you have your phone glued to your hands, in front of you like a coat of armor. 

Taking your smartphone with you is like a shield of protection that stops you from looking — but more importantly feeling — alone. What is more, when you have your smartphone you are not alone. Instead, you are constantly connected.

And flying is no different.

Your smartphone will be your ultimate companion when traveling. It holds your e-ticket, boarding pass, credit card, confirmation emails — even your vaccination status in 2021. 

Your phone also doubles as your banking system, your camera for taking quality travel photos, and your in-flight entertainment system. It is your latest book, how you watch the latest film on the flight, or simply a device for listening to music.

In short, it is needed at more or less every stage of the flight process, save for take-off and landing, and even when it is not needed chances are you will use it anyway. 

So what would you do if the battery ran out? As the frustratingly short life of a smartphone is well-known, the chance of it lasting you a long-haul flight when in constant use before, during, and after is slim. 

To avoid getting stranded mid-flight not knowing who did it in the latest crime series you are watching and to ensure you are always able to call someone or order an Uber on landing, be sure to pack a portable charger (like these). 

A portable charger will enable you to keep your phone battery life topped up throughout your travels. They are small and compact and can fit into any hand luggage. It will be as life-saving as having your phone in the first place.

13. Pack the right gear

I just returned from a solo flight last week, and there are several tips for flying for the first time by yourself that immediately come to mind. The first tip is to begin preparing long before arriving at the airport. I always check out the weather for packing and try to plan accordingly. 

I usually have my suitcase open for several days ahead of time. Rather than pack everything at once, I use it as a “holding area” for any and everything I think I might need. I then re-check the weather and finalize what I bring the day before my flight. 

Personally, I prefer to travel with only carry-on luggage, as it’s much quicker to get through airports — but don’t be afraid to check a bag if you need it. Many airlines now have a luggage tracker on their app and you can actually verify that your luggage is on your flight. 

Now let’s chat about how to get through an airport by yourself.

In the airport, you will need to have your boarding pass and ID (license or passport) handy and easily accessible for going through security. I usually put my boarding pass on my phone and have my ID in my pocket until I am through security. Then I always put it away at the same time that I’m putting my shoes back on. 

As far as shoes go, I do not like to spend a lot of time lacing and tying, so I only wear slip-on shoes or sandals. You can wear or carry a pair of socks if your feet typically get cold.

I usually wear a light jacket through the airport. Note that layering is very helpful. Some airports are much cooler than others and you don’t always know ahead of time.  

Planning for the actual flight itself is also important when flying alone. In fact, I have several “must-haves” every trip in my purse/backpack for use during the flight:

• gum,
• an audiobook on the Kindle on my phone,
• headphones,
• snacks,
• and an extra jacket, small blanket, or a scarf shawl

Additionally, water cannot be brought through security, but you can purchase it once you are fully through and in the departure area.

Typically, flight attendants come around during the flight to provide a drink and snack, but having your own just in case is good for peace of mind.

I also make sure that I have acetaminophen, something for indigestion or nausea, and mints or cough drops. There’s nothing worse than having a coughing session mid-flight with nothing to take for it. Your fellow travelers will thank you!

Personally, I enjoy flying alone as much as I do with someone, but over the years I have found that the more time I put into planning and preparation, the more relaxed I am during the trip.

14. Pack a power bank with the right mAh

Flying alone is so much easier nowadays when everything is available to you with the tap of a finger. Consider your boarding pass, your credit card, your airport shuttle, your hotel confirmation, and your maps — which are all easily accessible from your mobile phone or tablet.

This ease of access has made traveling so much simpler and quicker, as you no longer need to worry about printing all the necessary documents and having to carry a dossier full of tickets and maps.

However, to make all these digital assets possible there is the assumption that your phone is always on and has enough battery to take you through the day. But phones don’t always have long-lasting batteries, especially if the device is not new and considering that you constantly need to use it.

Luckily, there are many workarounds that can ensure your device is always on and functioning when you need it! The easiest one is to always carry a power bank (like these) and a charging cable with you. 

A power bank can be a lifesaver, as your phone may die in the most uncomfortable situations. As a bonus, by carrying a power bank you can also charge other small devices on the go, like your camera or Bluetooth headphones.

Now, before going to buy a random power bank, you need to keep a few things in mind.

Firstly, you need to consider the mAh value. mAh stands for milliamp-hour and describes the capacity of the battery. In general, the higher the mAh, the more times it can charge your phone, but at the same time the heavier the power bank is.

Overall, you want to choose something that fits your circumstances. If you have a long flight ahead of you and then you are off for some solo traveling, choose something between 10000 to 20000 mAh (expect about three-to-six charges respectively). Otherwise, a smaller one that provides at least one full charge should suffice.

15. Carry a pen

This will be the smallest but one of the most important items you can pack when flying alone — and the easiest to forget. There is nothing worse than that sinking feeling when immigration forms and arrival cards are handed out on a flight, and you instantly realize you do not have a pen in your carry-on. 

At this point your choices are to ask someone if you can borrow their pen, or hope that the arrival hall has pens for public use.

Both options are uncomfortable and may slow you down. Then there is the added stigma of sharing personal items during these socially distant times.

So pack it first, and pack a spare just in case!

16. Download an audio book 

One of my best tips for flying alone for the first time is to plan ahead for your in-flight entertainment. To do this, I suggest downloading an audiobook to enjoy during your flight.

Plan to select and download your audiobook at least a day or two prior to your departure. Doing this ahead of time will prevent you from forgetting to download the book on your actual travel day when things are likely to be a bit hectic. 

I recommend selecting a book you’re genuinely excited to read. This way, you’ll have something to look forward to on your travel day, which can help alleviate any anxiety you might be feeling about your solo trip. 

Downloading an audiobook is also one of my best tips for first time flyers with anxiety! Audiobooks make a great choice for solo travelers because they help reduce social anxiety. In most cases, having headphones on will prevent fellow travelers from bothering you or making small talk. 

If you’re a nervous flier, audiobooks are also a great way to drown out many of the other common noises you’ll experience on airplanes such as engine noise, excessive announcements, or even crying babies. 

In addition to providing entertainment and alleviating travel anxiety, audiobooks are a great tool for learning more about your destination before you arrive. Consider selecting an audiobook about the place you’re visiting. This way you can do your travel planning while en route to your destination.

17. Dress comfortably 

Your first time traveling alone or boarding a flight solo is likely going to be mentally taxing on you — which is totally understandable! One of the best tips and tricks to combat mental fatigue is physical comfort.

In short: dress very comfortably for your first solo flight and it will help boost your overall mood throughout this new experience.

For starters, the airport security is likely going to make you take your shoes off when going through the metal detector, so opt for an easy on/off pair. These will also be convenient if you want to take your shoes off during the flight — though only do this if you’re planning to wear socks.

Speaking of socks, a nice pair will come in handy for several reasons. First, you’ll want them at security so you don’t have to have your feet on the icky carpet or cold floor, but they will also keep you comfortable on the actual flight.

As airplanes tend to be cold, along with socks you’ll want to have a sweater or hoodie in your purse or bookbag — and not packed away in the suitcase where it’s out of reach. If you have a favorite hoodie, consider bringing that one, which will keep you both warm and in good spirits.

By the way, a nice pair of stretchy, elastic leggings or yoga pants are perfect for flights. These are great because you can move around freely, and they will move with you. Sweatpants are another great option.

18. Avoid overpacking (and embarrassment)

While you’ve surely heard that it’s best to pack everything into a carry-on, if possible, you need to make sure that you can easily transport your carry-on bags. Overpacking your carry-on and personal item bag means you won’t be able to get through the airport quickly if you have to run to catch a flight.  

Additionally, you’ll have to put your carry-on in the overhead bin, which can be very tricky if you have a heavy suitcase and there is little room. You’ll want to make sure that you can lift your carry-on up over your head — by yourself — to avoid any embarrassing incidents or having to ask for help.  

Clumsily hitting your seatmate on the head with your carry-on because it’s too heavy for you to hoist into the bin is not a good way to start a flight!

19. Use a VPN for added security

Internet security is an issue of increasing prevalence. Hacking is so easy a child can do it (there’s a terrifying video somewhere out there to prove it), and public places such as airports and hotels are like shooting fish in a barrel for hackers. 

Actually, any place with public WiFi –- even if it has a password –- is dangerous; anybody who has ever used that connection can gain access to the contents of your laptop/tablet/phone if they know how.

I’m looking at you, local Starbucks!

Luckily, protecting your data and devices is an easy fix. A Virtual Private Network (VPN) creates a firewall that encrypts your traffic (browsing, emails, downloads, uploads) and allows you to surf anonymously with a different IP address.

If that all sounds a bit technical for your liking, don’t worry; installing and using a VPN is as simple as signing up, downloading the software, and clicking “Connect/Disconnect” whenever you want to toggle your VPN on and off. 

There are free and paid versions, and I’ve tried a ton of different VPN services. Now I happily pay (less than $3 dollars a month) for one of the best, NordVPN. It definitely one of the most important travel safety essentials to consider!

20. Always take an empty water bottle with you to the airport 

According to Healthline, staying hydrated is a great way to curb anxiety, so if you’re feeling jittery about your first time flying on a plane alone, water will be your friend.

It’s also worth noting on long journeys that keeping hydrated can help you cope with jet lag, which can seriously ruin an otherwise fun solo trip.

Now, I’ve lost count of how many bottles of water I’ve had confiscated at airport security over the years, which is why I recommend you always bring an empty water bottle with you when you travel. 

Or rather than throw away yet another bottle of water before passing through security, simply drink up and keep hold of that empty bottle. Then once you’re through security and in the departure lounge, you can easily refill it at a water fountain and take it on board with you. This will save you from buying expensive bottles of water at the airport and on the plane.

I forgot this piece of advice on my last trip when I was traveling on a budget airline. It ended up costing me €3 to purchase a tiny bottle!

Having a reusable water bottle will also come in extremely useful throughout your trip and save a fortune.

21. Know vital tips for flying alone as a teenage

Letting a teen fly alone may be a worrisome concept, but with some preparation and research, you can help the trip go smoothly. Airlines are ready to support you on this new adventure! 

First of all, they have unaccompanied minor policies that will help both you and your teen feel comfortable in letting them fly solo. Read the highlights of the policy ahead of time so both you and your teen know what to expect from the airline for support. 

Additionally, provide your child with a means of staying connected by choosing either a tablet, smartwatch, or phone. 

If you have avoided getting your child technology, this may be the time to give them access, even if it is only temporary. The goal is that your child knows how to get in touch with you in case of an emergency or change in schedule — such as an unexpected flight delay.  

Empower your teen by setting up a plan for unexpected issues. This could be as simple as knowing how they can contact you in case of changing schedules or an issue such as delayed flights.

22. Add a VIP experience to your flight

If the thought of flying alone for the first time makes you nervous, I recommend upgrading your trip and turning your first flight into a VIP experience!

Take control right from booking your solo flight by choosing your own seat. Yes, it will cost a little bit extra; but, you will be able to board the plane whenever suits you best while knowing exactly where you are sitting, too.

Some carriers also include a priority check-in desk with certain seats ensuring you whizz past those queues when you first arrive at the airport.

While you’re at it, why not avoid the check-in desks completely and travel carry-on only?

If it’s only a short trip you might consider only taking hand luggage that fits under the seat in front of you. This will allow you to board whenever you like without having to worry about whether or where your suitcase will fit. It also means you will have everything you need for your flight right at your feet.

Another idea:

Turn your airport waiting time into a bit of “me time” and book a VIP lounge at the airport. Enjoying drinks and snacks away from the airport chaos is always a great way to deal with any first time flying alone anxiety.

Plus, if there are any flight delays you can stay in the comfortable lounge — meaning your only worry might be the amount of cake and Champagne you have enjoyed!

23. Dress in layers for inflight comfort

Flying alone can be scary, so make sure you are as comfortable as possible when traveling. Rather than wondering if the flight is going to provide a blanket or if you’ll freeze, control the situation by dressing up in layers! 

Since flight temperatures can vary, make sure to layer up and then wear or take off layers as needed to keep you in your maximum comfort level. It can feel sweaty on a packed flight or chilly on an empty red-eye flight.

You can always stuff them in your backpack or carry-on bag if you don’t want to wear them. But keeping them handy helps when you are traveling across locations with contrasting climates.

24. Leave enough time between connections

Something I wish I had known before traveling alone for the first time was to leave time between flight connections!

Having to worry if you have enough time to catch your connecting flight or if you’ll be stranded somewhere you weren’t expecting is never fun. And if it’s your first time flying alone, you definitely don’t want this added stress.

If possible, choose layovers that are at least an hour and a half, keeping in mind that this number is a guideline and you’ll want to research how long it will take you to get from one terminal to the other.

Also consider if you’ll need to go through security again, which adds time. This is especially important if you’re flying alone for the first time internationally.

For instance, if you’re traveling the USA solo and you’re connecting from one domestic flight to another, you won’t have to go through security. However, if you’re flying from, say, the USA and connecting in London to fly to Italy, you will.

25. Know where to sit on the plane

Knowing where to sit on the plane makes a big difference when flying for the first time alone.

Not all seats offer the same flight experience. For instance, nervous fliers who hate turbulence should sit toward the front of the plane, as you’ll feel less of the bumps than if you were in back.
