When Jesus told a parable, He surely desired His hearers to respond by repenting and coming to Him. In today’s Gospel passage, Jesus told a parable which convicted people of their sin (Mk 12:1ff). However, the response of the Jewish leaders to the parable of the tenants was: “They left Him and went off” (Mk 12:12). Jesus’ hearers understood exactly what He was saying to them. Sadly, they chose to reject both Jesus and His message.

The Lord has long been sending you messengers to deliver His Word (see Mk 12:2-6). He keeps talking of your sin, not to condemn and punish you, but in order to save you (see Jn 3:17; Rm 8:1). He speaks as a Good Shepherd Who longs to rescue you from destruction. He sends the Holy Spirit to convict you of sin (Jn 16:8).

The Church begins each Mass the same way, by inviting us to repent of our sin. How will we respond when the Lord convicts us of our sin? Will we leave Him and go away? (Mk 12:12) Or will we leave sin behind and run to Jesus?

Prayer: Father, I lay my pride, will, heart, soul, and mind at the foot of Jesus’ cross. Give me only Your love and Your grace in return.

Promise: “Happy the man who fears the Lord, who greatly delights in His commands.” —Ps 112:1

இன்றைய உவமையில் வரும் பணியாளர் முதல் வகையான ஆளுமையைப் பெறுகின்றார். அதுதான் அவரை இன்னும் அதிகமான ஆசைக்கு இழுத்துச் செல்கின்றது. சிந்தித்து பார்த்தோமென்றால் தோட்டத்தின் உரிமையை பெறக்கூடிய ஆளுமையாக மாறிவிடுகிறது. திராட்சைத் தோட்டம் இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களைக் குறிக்கிறது. இதன் உரிமையாளர் இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களை அழைத்துக் கட்டிக் காத்த யாவே கடவுள் தான். தோட்ட தொழிலாளர்கள் இஸ்ரயேல் என்னும் தோட்டத்தைப் பராமரித்த யூத அதிகாரிகள் அல்லது குத்தகைகாரர்கள். தோட்டத்தை ஆய்வு செய்யவும் வழிநடத்தவும் அதனுடைய பலன்களைப் பெறவும் தோட்ட உரிமையாளரால் அனுப்பப்பட்ட பணியாளர்கள் தான் கடவுள் இஸ்ரயேல் மக்களிடையே அனுப்பிய இறைவாக்கினர்கள். இறுதியில் அனுப்பப்பட்ட இறைவாக்கினர் தான் இயேசு கிறிஸ்து. இந்த உவமை தங்களை பற்றியதே என்று யூதர்கள் புரிந்து கொண்டனர். இவர்கள் இயேசுவுக்கு எதிராக தீட்டிக் கொண்டிருந்த திட்டங்களை அறிந்து தம் மரணம் நெருங்கி விட்டது என்கிற கருத்தில் தான் இயேசு இதனை கூறினார்.

நம்முடைய ஆளுமை அன்பை மையப்படுத்துகிறதா? அல்லது அதிகாரத்தை மையப்படுத்துகிறதா? சிந்திப்போம்.

At the first Christian Pentecost, the Holy Spirit dealt in a magnificent way with tongues. First, the Spirit appeared in the form of “tongues as of fire” (Acts 2:3). The apostles yielded their formerly silent tongues to speak in both native and foreign languages, proclaiming the prophetic Word of God (Acts 2:4ff). Their hearers used their tongues to repent and ask how to be saved (Acts 2:37).

Once the Spirit has your tongue, the battle begins. Satan accuses you of being foolish (Acts 2:13) and enflames any fears you may have. The world attempts to intimidate and silence you. This is what the apostles experienced once the Spirit took over their tongues. Nevertheless, the apostles yielded to the inspiration of the Spirit, not to the attacks of Satan and the world.

When we yield our tongues to the Spirit, the pressure to stifle the Holy Spirit and hold our tongues is so fierce that the Lord personally assures us: “Do not be afraid. Go on speaking, and do not be silenced, for I am with you” (Acts 18:9).

Today is the first day of the Pentecost Novena, nine days of prayer to prepare to receive the Holy Spirit in fullness at Pentecost. Give the Lord your mind, heart, soul, and tongue. Ask the Lord to teach you “what to say and how to speak” (Jn 12:49). Allow the Holy Spirit to control your speech in both your native tongue and in the spiritual gift of tongues.

PRAYER: Father, I ask You in Jesus’ name to prepare my heart to be a worthy dwelling place for the Holy Spirit.

தீமைக்கு எதிரான போராட்டம் சாதாரணமானது அல்ல. இன்றைக்கு நம்மில் எத்தனையோ பேர் மக்கள் நலனுக்காக தங்களது ஆடம்பர வாழ்வைத்துறந்து, நீதிக்காக குரல் கொடுத்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள். அதிகாரவர்க்கம் மக்களைச் சிந்திக்க விடாது, அவர்களை அடக்குமுறையால் தாக்கிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறது. ஆனாலும், அவர்கள் தொடர்ந்து போராடிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறார்கள். இறைவன் அவர்களுக்கு துணைநிற்க வேண்டுமென்று நாம் மன்றாடுவோம்.

Several decades ago, I began my computer programming career. During my first month on the job, so much new information came my way that I left work each day with a headache from information overload. I learned much each day. However, my boss had a great deal more to teach me, and I couldn’t bear it yet. Likewise, schools separate students into twelve grades. High-school subjects are not taught to first-graders; they aren’t mentally ready for that yet.

Besides being mentally unable to bear information, people may not be emotionally ready for certain information. For example, Jesus had just told His apostles He would be leaving them. He could see they were grieving His departure (Jn 16:5-6) and realized that they couldn’t bear any further revelations (Jn 16:12).

Finally, we may not be ready spiritually to bear God’s revelation. If we live in sin, our spiritual hearing is blocked and our hearts too hardened to receive what Jesus wants to tell us (see e. g. Mk 4:15ff). Like the Corinthians, we may be immature Christians not yet committed to growing in discipleship. Though we should be able to bear solid teaching by now, the Lord has to feed us spiritual milk, for we are still infants in Christ living at the level of the flesh (1 Cor 3:1-3).

God insists upon repentance (Acts 17:30). Repent of all sin and of any stifling of the Holy Spirit (1 Thes 5:19). Abide in God’s Word (Jn 8:31) and in Holy Mass. Bear the Good News. Bear great fruit for Jesus.
