Leon Washington appears willing to stage a training-camp holdout if the Jets don’t offer him a “fair market deal,” as the multi-threat running back puts it. The way we hear it, much of the problem is that Washington wants to be paid as one of the league’s elite backs, whereas the Jets believe a backup doesn’t merit that type of money, regardless of how dangerous he is with the ball.

As the Jets prepare for the rigors of another training camp soon, one position on the team that new coach Rex Ryan seems excited about is the offensive line. “I think the strength of our football team is probably our offensive line,” Ryan said to the Jets official site, “and that’s a great thing to begin right there — four former first-round picks in the line, two Pro Bowlers and a couple of near-misses. I think that’s a great way to start.”

The line will be a key, as it will keep either new QB Mark Sanchez or veteran Kellen Clemens upright, and also can open holes for whatever back is carrying the ball that day for the Jets. Another key to the line is coach Bill Callahan, who Ryan praised as “one of the premier offensive line coaches in the National Football League.”

The line of D’Brickashaw Ferguson, Alan Faneca, Nick Mangold, Brandon Moore and Damien Woody appears well on their way to being one of the five best in the NFL this season. “They’re all focused professionals who want to get better,” Callahan said.

I’m working hard for real right now, getting ready for two-a-days. The last couple of days I’ve done beach workouts with Jamal Lewis, Takeo Spikes and a couple other guys with a trainer down here in Miami.

It’s rough when you do everything in the sand. We do 40-yard sprints, backpedals, 100-yard sprints, reaction drills. Most days I’m working out twice, running in the morning and lifting in the afternoon, then switching it up. As a receiver it’s important to lift a lot with your legs to keep them strong, keep your speed and stamina up late in the game. I also bench to build upper-body strength so when a DB presses you at the line you can get him off.

But this past Wednesday was my birthday so I’ve also been having some fun. I flew down here to catch up with my family. Nobody gave me any presents though. LOL

New York Jets DE/OLB Calvin Pace has been suspended without pay for the team’s first four regular-season games of 2009 for violating the NFL policy on performance enhancing substances, the league announced on Thursday.

Pace’s suspension begins on Saturday, September 5. He is eligible to return to the Jets’ active roster on Monday, October 5 following the team’s October 4 game against the New Orleans Saints. Pace is eligible to participate in all preseason practices and games.

Pace, who signed a six-year, $42 million deal with the Jets back in March of 2008, will lose four game checks totaling $176,470 (four-seventeenths of his base salary). Pace’s base salary for 2009 is just $750,000, but a league source said he carries a salary cap number over $7 million.

“This is a situation that resulted from an over-the-counter dietary supplement that contained a substance that I did not know violated the League’s policy. I am responsible for what I put into my body and I should have paid closer attention to the League’s guidelines. I regret that this has happened and apologize to my teammates, the entire Jets organization as well as the fans. Hopefully, this does not distract from our ultimate goal of winning the Super Bowl,” Pace said in reaction to his four-game suspension.

Pace, who turns 29 in October, was originally selected in the first round of the 2003 draft by the Arizona Cardinals. He was a major disappointment for the Cardinals until the final season of his rookie deal when he played mostly outside linebacker. His breakout season in 2007 yielded him the huge free agent contract detailed above from the Jets.

With Pace out four games, pressure will be on second-year DE/OLB Vernon Gholston to make a strong contribution especially early in the season. Unfortunately, the former 2008 first-round pick only participated in roughly 16 percent of the defensive snaps last season and posted just 13 combined tackles along with zero sacks.
