A Lake District hotel is creating a special room to provide inspiration for modern-day Wordsworths.

Waterhead, which is located on the shore of Windermere – England’s largest lake, wants to encourage a new generation of poets to write beautiful verse about the area.

The Lake District’s spectacular landscape has provided inspiration for a wealth of famous poets, such as William Wordsworth, Samuel Coleridge and Robert Southey as well as writers such as Beatrix Potter, Arthur Ransome, Thomas de Quincey and John Ruskin. Wordsworth lived just a few miles away from Waterhead at Dove Cottage and then Rydal Mount.

English Lakes Hotels Resorts and Venues, which owns Waterhead, has put together some of the ingredients they hope will help aspiring writers get their creative juices flowing.

The Poets’ Room contains a writers’ desk from which wordsmiths can enjoy spectacular vistas over the waters of Windermere and the fells beyond.

The views include Loughrigg Fell where Wordsworth often walked in search of inspiration. He described the tarn that can be found part way up the fell as ’round clear and bright as heaven’ and nicknamed it ‘Diana’s Looking-glass’.

An ink pen and paper is on hand to help people get into the writing mood, or they can make use of a traditional typewriter, as well as having the option to plug in a laptop to the high speed internet access.

An iPod docking station will be available so people can bring along their perfect mood music.

The room will also contain valuable reference material such as books of famous poetry, a dictionary and thesaurus as well as the guidebook to the area which Wordsworth himself wrote so the writer can visit some of the region’s many picturesque locations to provide food for thought. The books include the journals of William Wordsworth’s sister Dorothy, recounting many of the walks that inspired her brother’s famous poetry.

Mark Needham, manager of Waterhead, said: “The spectacular scenery of the Lake District has inspired some of our greatest writers and poets in the past. We would really like to see that tradition continue into the future and have created a room which we hope will help aspiring poets and writers’ creativity.

“We would love to see the kind of work people are able to produce in the room and it would be fantastic if someone was able to create a modern poem about the Lake District to rival Wordsworth’s ‘Daffodils’.”

Guests who stay in the Poetry Room will get free entry to Dove Cottage as well as getting access to the Jerwood Centre Reading Room which contains the Wordsworth Trust’s collection of manuscripts and first editions (TBC). The Reading Room is usually only open to researchers by prior appointment.

Anyone who stays in the Poetry Room can submit their best poem for Waterhead’s Lake District Poetry Competition. The winning poem will be framed and hung in the hotel and the winner will also get a free weekend’s stay at any of the hotels run by English Lakes Hotels Resorts and Venues.

The Poet’s Room will be available from 5th March 2012 and the competition will run until 31st October 2012.

The Waterhead Boutique Hotel and Dining is the Lake District’s only four-star town house hotel near Ambleside on the shores of Windermere.

In Ethiopia the intriguing histories of Gondar, Lalibela and Bahir Dar provide a fascinating interlude. Continuing to Botswana you can enjoy Chobe National Park and the famous waterways where huge herds of elephant, buffalo and hippo congregate.

Greece tourism is currently hostage to financial and political uncertainties. Should this be the case? The answer is an emphatic ‘No’ because despite all appearances to the contrary, nothing, absolutely nothing, should disturb one’s holiday in a country that is still one of the world’s most desirable tourist destinations. See www.skyros.com.

Take, for example, the beautiful island of Skyros where Skyros Holidays are based. Regardless of whatever may be happening in Athens or anywhere else, Skyros island remains as beautiful, tranquil and welcoming as ever. The sky is still blue, the sea azure, the landscape gorgeous, the nights full of the scent of jasmine and wild sage, the locals friendly, the food delicious and, as Seferis the poet says, the nymphs are still around to gather your cares and hang them on trees and the cupids and satyrs are still there singing and playing. They all care nothing about deficits, cuts, taxation or unemployment!

Although Athens might be, at present, experiencing difficulties, the current turmoil is unlikely to continue. And even if it does, the impact for tourism will be minimal. Frequent strikes, even a general strike, will leave the airports unaffected as the trade unions have a policy not to disrupt the tourist trade. There is no need to worry about public transport on a Skyros holiday as the company, just like many other tour operators, transport their guests by private coach.

Perhaps there are concerns about an overnight stay in Athens? Here Skyros Holidays have ensured full peace of mind with their transfer hotel, The Metropolitan, being located far from the city centre on the coastline. The ferry to Skyros island is privately owned and therefore not subject to strike action. All-in-all, Skyros Holidays has ensured that their guests continue to enjoy a well-deserved, relaxing and inspiring holiday this year in Greece.

So, dear travel writer, give Greece a chance and encourage your readers to visit the country fearlessly for their holidays, and let us provide Greece with some of the relative relief that its travel industry so desperately needs. Your doing so, acting in other words in solidarity with a country that goes through her most testing times, will, by the way, be very much appreciated by the Greeks.

‘We are all Greeks now’ is the banner under which thousands of people demonstrated recently in more than twenty European and American cities. Join this movement. Be a Greek for a while and help the Greeks get through one of the worst phases of their history.
