Cartier Emerald-Cut Diamond Engagement Ring

Akin to the style of Hollywood, Grace Kelly’s engagement ring was a classic beauty. However, she went through two engagement rings. The first was a diamond and ruby eternity band. But, Prince Rainier III felt it didn’t suit her. He then presented her with an emerald-cut diamond bordered with two baguettes and weighed just over 10 carats.

Cartier Three-Strand Diamond Necklace

This was one of many engagement gifts from Prince Rainier III. Since Grace would not be inheriting a grand collection of jewels, he took it upon himself to begin building her collection. According to various reports, this diamond necklace  (pictured with the Bains de Mer Tiara below) weighs anywhere from 58 to 64 carats.

Cartier Bains de Mer Tiara

Princess Grace was known for her decadent hair decor. A wedding gift to Grace from the Société des Bains de Mer, the tiara was made by Cartier and featured three detachable brooches. Twinkling gemstones under perfect lining is what’s made us swoon over glass cases for decades. But, following suit of a “greener” and more natural generation, “raw” or “mineral” jewelry is what many are showing off these days.

Let’s be honest with ourselves – we love our jewelry because it sparkles and dazzles, decorating our hands, wrists and necklines in the best way possible. 

But, pollutants and lotions can leave our pieces looking less than fabulous. Luckily, there are some kitchen essentials that can leave jewelry looking as though it’s fresh out of the case.

Baking Soda & Water

NOTE: Silver should not soak, as that will only speed up the tarnishing process.

Soap & Seltzer Water

Give your gold a good cleaning by letting it bathe in a mixture of dish soap and seltzer water. The combination will clear debris that can get trapped on the underside of a piece of jewelry. For a deeper scrub, take an unused toothbrush and gently run over the item to break up anymore stubborn grime.

Vodka

You don't need to spend a lot of money on vodka that will clean you're jewelry. The cheap stuff will do!

Window Cleaner 

Precious stones and metals are things most of us admire, but for many it’s hard to even tell what’s real and what’s not. And with more jeweler options than your typical Kay or Jared nowadays, it’s more likely to get caught wearing something less than brilliant.

So, how can you ensure that you’re getting the best of the best? Here are some questions to ask before buying:

How is the quality?

When it comes to jewelry, a lot of the time, you can judge a book by its cover. If the stones are cloudy or have minimal brilliance (brightness) to them, there’s a possibility they’re not real. Also, check the links and prongs. If the links in a bracelet or necklace are pinching and the prongs don’t seem to be flush to what they’re holding, you may be out of luck. This should only be your first assessment though, as some fake jewelry could fool a trained eye at first glance.

Is there a hallmark?

No, we’re not looking for your run-of-the-mill card store. Instead, we’re looking for something much more precious – precious metals, to be exact.

The United States may not have an official hallmarking system, but if you’re buying from other countries or antiques, a hallmark is an official mark stamped onto a piece of platinum, gold, silver or sometimes palladium. This is to show that it is in fact legitimate.

In the States though, you will find a mark of the precious metal percentage – 14k (58.3% gold), 18k (75% gold), PT950 (95% platinum), 925 (sterling silver). This can be replicated in fakes, and is sometimes stamped onto gold plated jewelry, so don’t let it be your deciding factor.

Is it magnetic?

This is another super simple test to start you in the right direction when on the hunt for real silver or gold. Neither are magnetic, so if you hold a magnet and it reacts, it’s not what you’re looking for. However, this is just the first step, as not all fake jewelry is made with magnetic material.

Are there any flaws?

Believe it not, you’re wanting to find a few flaws in your jewelry. These “flaws”, known as inclusions to gemologists and jewelers, are little irregularities within a stone and are typically caused by environmental factors.

But don’t worry – inclusions don’t ruin your stone. Inclusions can add personality and intrigue to what is already a completely unique piece. In fact, stones with inclusions in them are sometimes valued higher.

Take amber – a resin that sometimes traps insects – for example. Overall, if you’re looking at a piece of jewelry that is seemingly flawless, you may want to take a closer look.

Does it pass the bite test?

So, you’ve gone away on a cruise, and a nice gentleman in Cozumel wants to sell you some pearls. Different from gemstones, you have less to go on when getting an idea of a pearl’s quality. The quickest and easiest way to know if a pearl is authentic is to bite it. Yes, bite it.

All you need to do is hold it with the tips of your fingers and run it across your teeth. A real pearl will be a little gritty.

What does a gemologist say?

It’s as easy as running to the mall and asking someone to take a closer look.

Make sure you’re asking a certified gemologist for their input, as many sales associates at even the largest jewelry chains have little real knowledge of gems and jewelry.

There’s been one too many times that I’ve been misinformed by a jewelry store sales associate. Typically written appraisals cost $100-$200, but most gemologists are happy to give you their verbal acknowledgements for free, and many of them will go on for hours happily about gems.

1. Put them on last and take them off first

Pearls are a natural gem and are very porous. This means that they absorb the oils and chemicals that contact them on your body. Hairspray and perfume are not good for your pearls either! If you follow this first rule when getting ready, your pearls will thank you. Make your pearls the last piece of jewelry you put on and the first thing you take off. Even limiting the wear time just a little bit can help pearls last for a lifetime.

2. Only use cleaners specifically for pearls

At the end of every wear, you should gently wipe off your pearls to remove any oils from your body. When wanting a deeper clean, you need to be extremely cautious about what goes on them. Acidic ingredients like vinegar, baking soda and window cleaner are way too harsh for this organic gemstone.

Instead wipe down with distilled water – as tap may carry too many chemicals – or a cleaner specific for pearls that can be recommended by your jeweler. Also, never let your pearls soak. Eventually, this can break down the outer layers of the gem and leave it looking anything but pristine.

3. Only use soft cloths when cleaning

In the same way that pearls are sensitive to chemicals, their surfaces are also sensitive to aggravation. When wiping down your pearls, use a soft cloth like microfiber or simply a cotton pad, to avoid scratching their beautiful nacre coating.

4. Store them separate from other jewelry

Obviously, pearls are delicate, and there is a decent amount of protocol to follow when wearing them. But, what about when you take them off? After gently wiping them down with a soft, slightly moistened cloth, store them separately from your other jewelry.

Hard gemstones and metals are able to scratch your pearls if they come in contact, so it’s best to lay your pearls out in a different compartment. When traveling, be sure to store them in a silk or velvet pouch.

But, no matter what, don’t be afraid to wear your pearls! They are a stunning creation of nature and deserve to be shown off. Just be sure to show them some TLC when you get home. 

And, truthfully, it speaks to our culture. In an era where self expression is of the utmost importance, jewelry has followed suit with each metal tone speaking to a different facets of the person who wears them. 

While yellow gold speaks to the more traditional, it can be transformed to be regal and elegant or authentic and earthy. Lighter metals, like silver and white gold, speak to the modern minimalist who wants something timeless. And lastly, fashion pieces made of feminine tones like rose gold and copper are suited for the non-traditional who sometimes want to make a statement, no matter how simple or bold.

So, how can you start mixing your metals?

Pick your piece. Rings, bracelets and necklaces are easily stackable. You can add as many as you want and together the different colors and variations make for a fun, personalized visual.

Begin with your base. Choose a metal that is your absolute favorite and begin building with a timeless piece.

Add some flair. Maybe you’re going for the minimalist look, with your base being a simple white gold diamond band. Stack a smaller, rose gold band on top of it for a nice bit of frosting and a subtle contrast.

Give it some contrast. If you’ve stayed conservative, now is the time to add something out of left field. Bring in some yellow gold for warmth. You can even find something with a little texture – maybe a soft wave in the brand, or braided.

Keep building. You can always take off pieces when there are too many, and you can always swap. Eventually you’ll find a combination that suits your lifestyle, personality and has a nice balance to it. If you create a jewelry collection in which every piece is interchangeable and stackable, you can create many different looks with just a few pieces of jewelry.

Just remember: In fashion, there are a lot of rules, but rules are meant to be broken! So, don’t discriminate and have fun mixing and matching your metals.

We spent 4 hours on the phone with different insurance companies to find out all the information that you should know when it comes to insuring your jewelry, so you don't have to! You're welcome.

Tip #1: Use

"Standalone Jewelry Insurance," rather than adding your engagement ring to your homeowner's insurance.  Why you ask? Filing a single claim on your insurance means that your monthly payment is going to skyrocket. In the event that you happen to lose your engagement ring AND your water heater breaks, having two claims basically means you're "uninsurable," according to multiple companies we've talked to.                            

Further, many homeowner's insurance policies only cover your jewelry in the event of a robbery. Standalone jewelry insurance will cover your jewelry for almost any case, including "mysterious disappearances." 

Tip #2: DON'T wait to insure your jewelry. Insurance is inexpensive. Here are a few examples of the breakdown of costs for full coverage insurance on your jewelry. $10k value = $10/month; $20k value = $21/month; $25k value = $27/month

Tip #3: Get a jewelry appraisal, and make sure to update it every 5 years. A certified gemologist can appraise your jewelry for about $100-$200, depending on the item. (If you are in Orange County, The Jewel Princess currently offers appraisals at a special rate of $50! We also offer onsite services so you never need to part from your beloved jewelry). Having an up-to-date appraisal will ensure that if anything does happen to your jewelry, you will be able to replace it with no out-of-pocket costs, woohoo!  An appraisal will have detailed information and photos of your jewelry that your store receipt often will not have--this is crucial information to insurance companies.

Although some insurance companies have the option for an "inflation rider" to account for inflation of goods over time, it is to your benefit to get your items reappraised to know their true value instead of an estimation. With this inflation rider comes a rise in your premium over time, so if the value didn't actually go up, you're paying a higher premium for nothing! A quick and easy appraisal can save you money in the long run, and many places offer discounts for doing multiple appraisals, or just appraisal "updates."

Tip #4: You can insure as much or as little of your appraised value as you want! You have options. If your grandmother's diamond necklace was appraised for $20,000, you can choose to insure it for $8,000. That means that your monthly premiums will be lower, and also that if you do happen to lose it, the insurance company will cut you a check for $8,000. If for some reason you have not heeded our first tip to get standalone jewelry insurance, you will need a jewelry appraisal to protect your jewelry through your homeowner's insurance. Most companies will cover items with a value of up to $3,000 to $5,000 without a formal appraisal being submitted. If you are expecting anything over that value (check with your specific company what that limit is for you, as it varies) to be covered, you NEED to submit an appraisal ASAP. It is as easy as emailing over a picture of it. 

You can also opt for different deductible options which can raise or lower your premiums. Most people opt for a $0 deductible, but you can also opt for $500, to lower your rate (although our research has shown it's not by much).

Tip #5: Take care of your jewelry! Having insurance does not mean it is indestructible. Jewelry insurance does NOT cover wear and tear over time. If you happened to crack your big stone in two for some reason, there is room for insurance to come in. However, insurance will not cover fixing the chips and scratches accumulated over time on your jewelry. 

Tip #6: Safety precautions mean premium discounts! Having a large safe or an alarm system can reduce your premium costs, since there is less risk involved from the insurer's perspective. Ask your insurer what other things might reduce your premiums, it never hurts to ask!

Their premium rates are based upon two factors: value of the item and your zip code. That means that filing any claims(e.g. for prior theft) will not raise you premium, woot woo! For $10,000 coverage at 0$ deductible, their annual premium is $150, to be paid upfront (for a SoCal zip code).

FROM THE EDITOR: My favorite style is what I like to call "Minimalist Treasures." I love to compose all of my outfits out of a few simple items, worn different ways, with different pieces of jewelry. It follows the logic of minimalist fashion, but rather than spending money on clothing which has a short shelf-life, I spend my money on a few pieces of REAL jewelry. It's amazing how much a simple accessory can add to your style, and it's great knowing jewelry holds its value,  so if I ever DO get sick of it, I can sell it or trade it in for a new piece
