Misleading Gemstone Names
Read jewelry ads and you'll see descriptive terms tacked-on to the names of gemstones, like Oriental emerald (it's really a green sapphire), American ruby (a garnet) and Australian jade (treated quartz).
Sometimes extra terms do describe the source or type of gem that's being advertised, but many are deceptive, and some sellers hope you won't notice that they replace what you think is a more expensive gem with either a look-alike gem that's less expensive or components made from glass and other materials.

There are hundreds and hundreds of examples of misleading gemstone names. Here are some of the most common.

Diamond Impostors
German diamond: quartz

Herkimer diamond: double-terminated quartz

Bohemian Diamond: quartz
Most of the stones advertised with diamond in the name, but with a qualifying term in front of the word, are quartz.

Emerald Impostors
African emerald: green fluorite

Bohemian emerald: green fluorspar

Broghton emerald: green glass

Chatham emerald: synthetic emerald

Cape emerald: Prehnite

Gilson emerald: synthetic emerald

Emeraldine: chalcedony that's dyed green

True sapphire is sometimes called descriptive names, like Kashmir sapphire, which is a deep blue version of the gem, but most of today's sellers use the stone's color as a descriptive label.

Amazonite and chrysocolla are two gemstones that resemble turquoise and are sometimes confused with it.

The jewelry made from "impostor" gems might be just what you're looking for, so don't hesitate to buy it, but do some homework before you make a purchase so that you understand exactly what you are buying.

Poetically described as 'exhibiting the color of seawater parted by the bow of a sailing ship', and symbolizing 'eternal youth and happiness' since ancient times, aquamarine is a variety of beryl family of minerals, of which emerald is also a member.

High quality aquamarine is almost entirely free of inclusions, and exhibits wonderful shine. Iron is the substance, which gives aquamarine its enchanting color, a color that ranges from an almost indiscernible pale blue to a strong sea-blue. Some aquamarines have a light, greenish shimmer which is also a typical feature of this translucent azure gemstone, but it is the pure, clear blue that continues to epitomize the aquamarine, because it brings out so well the immaculate transparency and magnificent shine of this coveted gemstone.
The various color nuances of aquamarine have been given melodious names: The rare, intense blue aquamarines from the Santa Maria de Itabira mine in Brazil, for example, are called 'Santa Maria'. Similar nuances come from a few gemstone mines in Africa, particularly Mozambique. To help distinguish them from the Brazilian ones, these aquamarines have been given the name 'Santa Maria Africana'.

According to legend, aquamarine originated in the treasure chest of fabulous mermaids, and was regarded as the sailors' lucky stone in ancient times. Ancient sailors traveled with aquamarine crystals, believing that it would ensure a safe voyage, and guarantee a safe return; they often slept with the stones under their pillow to ensure sound sleep.

The name of aquamarine is derived from the Latin words 'aqua' (water) and 'mare' (sea). It is believed that its strengths are developed more positively when it is placed in water and bathed in sunlight. However, according to the old traditions, wearing aquamarine per se promises a happy marriage and bestows joy and wealth upon its wearer.
The tender blue color of aquamarine arouses feelings of sympathy, trust, harmony, and friendship, feelings that prove their worth in lasting relationships. The blue of aquamarine is considered a divine, eternal color, because it is the color of the sky and the color of water with its life-giving force.

There is hardly any other gemstone in modern jewelry design which is refined in such a variety of ways as aquamarine. Whether fashioned as a clear, transparent gem in the classical step cut, or creatively cut in a more modern design, it is always alluringly beautiful and can produce the most fascinating creations. Kate Hudson pulled off one of the best jewelry looks on last evening's SAG red carpet by turning her Cartier diamond sautoir spotlight necklace around so that it drapeed along the open back of her Emilio Pucci gown. Kate was one of many celebrities who chose white metal/white diamond jewelry for the event.

Tina Fey's earrings were from Neil Lane's new Renaissance collection, and fashioned from a mix of moonstone, brown diamonds, yellow diamonds and white diamonds, all set in platinum. Patricia Arquette chose colorful jewelry, too -- her huge yellow gold chandelier earrings were set with emeralds.

Large pendant-drop earrings made a splash on the ears of Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Julie Bowen, Holly Hunter and many other celebrities. Joan Allen gets the nod for the most unusual jewelry on the red carpet, with a striking Native American-like waterfall necklace.

Hilary Swank's intricate diamond necklace ushered in a new century at the Academy Awards ceremonies. The next year, most celebrities arrived wearing the standard fare of large diamonds and platinum, but two, Juliette Binoche and Ashley Judd, pulled off a successful flapper look.
The 9-11 terror attacks were just a few months in the past when the 2002 Oscars were presented, and most stars wore subdued jewelry as a way of showing respect for the victims. Jada Pinkett Smith's jewelry is an excellent example of the understated elegance we saw that year.

Large earrings in every style imaginable were popular in 2003 and 2004, and by 2005 showy jewelry of all sorts had returned.

ON THE MORNING OF NOVEMBER 4th, ABC's "GOOD MORNING AMERICA" RAN AN EXPOSÉ ON SALES OF UNDISCLOSED "COMPOSITE" (GLASS-FILLED) RUBY, CHARGING WIDESPREAD FRAUD. Many in the jewelry industry believe that the network's investigative methods are as scandalous as its findings. Just what did and didn't ABC prove; and did it go overboard in its tactics and conclusions?

Nobody disagrees with ABC that there are sales of ruby in American jewelry outlets that owe their looks to glass filling. No one disagrees that some of these sales of what is now called "composite" ruby are deceptive because shoppers are never told this critical fact. Indeed, nearly two years ago, gem dealer groups even issued global alerts about this material and demanded that gem labs develop specific nomenclature for this material and flag it as treated on lab identification and grading reports. As proof, we are re-printing our story from that time about this material called "X-Gems: The Rise of the Mutant Mineral," published in January 2008 and preceded by an email bulletin to all subscribers.

Where many in the trade find fault with ABC is over its tactics and conclusions. First, the network never mentioned the trade's own warnings about this ruby and attempts to prevent fraudulent sales of it. The trade was made to look implicitly guilty of indifference and neglect. Second, the network only found deceptive sales at three Macy's stores and in no others. Do sales by one firm in one market constitute proof of rampant rip-off nationwide and in all types of jewelry stores? Did ABC shop high-end stores where one would be less likely to find low-grade ruby? You be the judge. On our website we link to ABC's "Good Morning America" video. Jewelry Trends on the 2009 MTV VMA Red Carpet

It's unfortunate that this year's MTV Video Music Awards will be remembered by the scene Kanye West created when he rushed onto the stage and grabbed the microphone from Taylor Swift's hands before she could give her acceptance speech for Best Female Video, ranting that Beyonce should have won.

Had he remained in his seat (handcuffs could be a good look for the next awards ceremony he attends) Kanye would have heard the announcement for Beyonce's Video of the Year award, where the class-act star shared the stage with Swift, giving her the speech-time that Kanye took away.

Bling-bling earrings were the primary jewelry theme of the night, not unusual for an MTV awards show, but simple pendants and other necklaces were popular, too. The award for most unusual attire probably goes to Lady Gaga

Chicago native Jennifer Hudson entered the national spotlight in 2004 as a 23-year-old contestant on the 3rd season of Fox's American Idol.

After Idol, Jennifer audition for (and won) the role of Effie in the movie Dreamgirls. She received an Academy Award for her performance (plus a Golden Globe, BAFTA, SAG and Broadcast Film Critic's Association Awards).

In 2008, Jennifer's mother, Darnell Donnerson, and brother Jason were found murdered in her mother's Chicago home. Sadly, the body of her sister's son, 7-year old Julian King, was found three days later. Police charged William Balfour with the murders.

You'll see the multi-talented Jennifer in concert and on the screen in a variety of roles. Her first child, David Daniel Otunga Jr. (named for his father), was born in September, 2009.

Jewelry Trends at London Fashion Week - Spring/Summer 2010

You'll see two general categories of jewelry at any Fashion Week -- on the catwalk and on spectators (often celebrities) in the front row of popular shows. Styles are nearly always diverse, but both groups can be a good indicator of current and upcoming jewelry trends.

Cross pendants were a common theme at London Fashion Week, with cross styles varying from traditional to contemporary. Chunky necklaces, wide bracelets and large cocktail rings continued to be popular.

Michelle Obama's jewelry often includes the same pieces you might see on your best friend, and if you like Michelle's style, it isn't difficult to duplicate. Start with her signature necklaces, a small dog tag that reads "Hope," often combined with a tiny peace symbol necklace. And when she's feeling bold, watch out for those strands of oversize faux pearls.

Michelle's gold and diamond election night earrings were a departure from the (diamond?) studs she usually wears -- perfect attire for a celebration.

Piaget Limelight watch collection will bring you in the center of all attention. This one is as dazzling as its predecessors. Each piece showcases the brand’s dual mastery of both baute horlogerie and haute joallerie. Created in Piaget’s Geneva jewelry atelier, this fashionable collection has been made in 18 carat white gold.

We especially liked the Haute Joaileries Limelight watch (with reference no.G0A29084) for its dress in 537 duamonds that total to 40 carats. The Piaget 690P quartz movement powers this one. Besides this beauty, we are told that there are three other “secret” watches. And true to their claim, we haven’t got any specs on these yet.

Coming back to the pieces we liked. Do check out the Limelight Exceptions Piece (reference no.G0A34135) that can be doubled up as a bracelet by concealing its dial under a set of diamonds. A very exuberant piece, this one has a floral design with two leaves made of diamonds as decoration. There are many other designs too.

One country that has repeatedly been in news during the recession is India. Well, it had to be being the least affected by the economic hard times. Maybe it’s the good financial planning or special blessings from the many gods that reside here. Just so you know, Indians are known to spare nothing when it comes to pleasing their favorite God. And the one most popular is Lord Ganesha, indeed.
It is a common sight in India to see jewelers making and selling idols of gods made in gold and other precious stones. And now the famous diamond company Orra too joins the bandwagon but with a difference. Orra has given shape to Lord Ganesha a from 512 carat diamond.
This spectacular piece has been put for show in Pune. A very rare piece of jewel, the diamond used to make this idol was found in one of the Orra African factories by a foreigner. Apparently, the traveler was quite taken by the natural resemblance of the diamond to that of the Indian God. This idol is also being celebrated as the biggest Ganesh idol ever made from diamond. No word on pricing yet.

Hong Kong Show says diamond demand has not dwindled

The September Hong Kong Jewellery & Gems Show received an overall response that was not too disappointing. It happened that loose stone exhibitors were satisfied with the results, semi precious stones and precious stones like emerald and sapphires received average response. Diamonds of 0.50 pointers to 3carats were in fairly good demand, but the bigger size and top quality diamonds were low in demand, despite price being soft by the end of the show. The Show was a novel experience much more for its dual venue and separate exhibition timing according to the product categories. It kicked off with the loose gems and diamond category exhibition, at the AWE and culminated with the jewellery exhibition at the Convention Centre.

The intra-exhibitor trading segment felt the pinch of venue separation at the show. Business for jewellery at the Convention Centre turned out average, although footfalls were much less when compared to the previous September Hong Kong Jewellery & Gems Shows. There was a lot of hope and excitement built with the biggest participations. While the Antwerp Pavillion and IDI, at AWE were strategically located, the Indian Pavillion both at the AWE and Convention did not get good visibility. Infact, India is amongst those Asian markets considered strong to boost the gem and jewellery trade, so the inappropriate location did dampen moods of the exhibitors. Overall the show has been one of an average response, but thankfully diamonds have continued to shine.

Jewelry Trends on the 2009 MTV VMA Red Carpet

It's unfortunate that this year's MTV Video Music Awards will be remembered by the scene Kanye West created when he rushed onto the stage and grabbed the microphone from Taylor Swift's hands before she could give her acceptance speech for Best Female Video, ranting that Beyonce should have won.

Had he remained in his seat (handcuffs could be a good look for the next awards ceremony he attends) Kanye would have heard the announcement for Beyonce's Video of the Year award, where the class-act star shared the stage with Swift, giving her the speech-time that Kanye took away.

Bling-bling earrings were the primary jewelry theme of the night, not unusual for an MTV awards show, but simple pendants and other necklaces were popular, too. The award for most unusual attire probably goes to Lady Gaga
