I get this annoying comment on my youtube vids a lot. Overall, I dont really care about 'true' origami. I dont even really like normal origami (the flat kind from one piece of paper). People seem to assume my channel is an origami channel since it mainly has 3D origami stuff on it.

I'm more into handicrafts, handmade things, and mainly 3D/ sculptural things. I just find that they make for better displays and gifts.

In the pic above is 2 variations of the 3D origami mini rabbit. I think the one on the left obviously looks better than the one on the right. The right ones eyes are skinny and long, and the limbs are stiff and pointy. Its made from the same pieces that the rest of the rabbit is made from. While the left one has beads glued in for eyes, and the arms and ears are cut just a tiny bit to form rounded limbs.

A lot of people get all offended or something that they feel the need to bring up that its not origami because it was cut or glued. Honestly, I don't care about 'real' origami, as this is just 'handicrafts' to me. And as an artist/ or art student, you are taught to use the right materials to give off a specific 'look' you want to portray in your work. I use whatever material I think works best to make the thing look good. In this case, bead eyes has worked the best for me in giving it the 'kawaii' look, as well as cutting a tiny bit off the edges of the ears and arms to make it rounded.

You dont NEED to cut or glue things to make this rabbit model though, as shown on the right. The right one is something people would make to utilise the materials they have, in this case, if they only have paper and nothing else, they can make it without doing extra cutting/ gluing (the limbs can stay in without glue). But if you have the other materials or want to make it look better, why not experiment and try other materials to improve the look? It's not like a lot of stuff is glued on, or that the extra stuff is necessary to make it.

Things added to 3D origami that look alright/ not too tacky:
-bead eyes
-glued on foam sheets for certain features (eyes, nose, mouth)
-bows
-model coated with varnish

So, if you want, do whatever you want on your creations. Theres no "rule" to doing these things ^_^

Haven't posted in ages. I wanted to show you guys my friends FIRST 3D origami model!! Its pretty good for the first attempt! Just wanted to show that it's not that hard, and to give some inspiration to beginners or those who are thinking of trying this.

My friend is studying culinary arts with me, so its a bit of a different area to art/ crafts. Yet even she was able to make the rabbit in a day after I briefly showed her how to fold the pieces and connect them. After uni she went and bought a $4 pad of different coloured paper, went home and showed me the pic of what she made the next day!!

I gave her a 3DO rabbit as a small birthday gift (pink one in the pic on the right) and she made the rabbit by copying the one I gave her (without watching any video tutorial). The limbs aren't exactly how I made them but its pretty close and she was able to guess how to do them. She also used playdoh for the eyes which is clever. See, you can use whatever materials you think would work for the features, dont have to follow and use 1 specific thing :-)

I always get asked for good models for beginners, so here are some newer models/ variations I've come up with which I think are quite basic/ quick to make. Here are some pics and links to tutorials:

3D origami wedding swans

Another wedding, another 3D origami gift^_^ (diagram below)

I like crafting new wedding gifts! I always start with a simple idea of 2 figures together (usually a bride & groom or swans) stuck on some platform, and end up adding little details as I go/ think of them, and they all add up to make the gift much nicer. Its the little details that count. I'll explain my process and maybe you guys can get some ideas on crafting your own wedding gifts :-) or any gift for any occasion.

So I just found out a week before about the wedding. Swans seemed to be the easiest so I went with that. The plan was to make 2 white swans with flared wings, which look more elegant (The older swans I made just had triangle shaped wings), and add some colour on the tips of the wings (blue and pink to make a 'guy & girl' swan).

Decided to add quilled flowers to the wings of the swan since they look intricate and delicate. Glued pearl beads on them too to add a 'jewellery' look. It gives it more pearly/ sparkly-ness (not that they're sparkly but the light reflects off them and it just looks more nice).

I wanted to add some gold pieces to make it look nicer/ formal, so added a piece on the beak of the swan. I didnt have time to fold much gold pieces, so I only added a little bit. Less is more ^_^ Made a big white loop for the border of the platform (which kinda acts as a 'lake' for the swans). It was looking plain so I added some gold pieces spread evenly throughout the loop, I think theres only 8, with 20 white pieces between them. It looked empty between the gold so I filled it with a bit of the pastel colours used in the swan wings. 2 light pink, 2 light peach, 2 light blue. A few coloured pieces repeated in between something plain can make it look much more nicer. You dont need much coloured pieces.

I had some 'scrap' crafts like tiny cranes and quilled flowers and glued them onto the platform. The tiny gold cranes gives it a nice touch since they match the gold pieces in the 3D origami and they just look so tiny and peaceful^_^ The quilled flowers in the 'lake' kinda look like lily pads too.

Had some scrap pink paper lying around, so used a heart shaped hole puncher on it to get some pink hearts, and glued them onto the platform. They're like leaves/petals to add to the love/ wedding theme. Also found a small origami heart in my craft scraps so glued that on too

So there you have it, plain white swans with hints of soft pastel colours and a few gold pieces here and there that make it sparkle. This simple, soft and elegant look makes a good wedding, anniversary or valentines gift, or even just a fancy table centrepiece ^_^

3D origami teddy bear variations

Here are some pics of different variations of 1 model to give you ideas on how you can alter it for different people and occasions. Eg. you can use the persons favourite colour and add different patterned paper on the inner ears and foot pads to change the look.

Suggestions

-For a baby gift, use pastel colours

-For a valentines/ anniversary gift for a girlfriend, use pink and add red on the inner ears/foot pads or patterned paper to make it more feminine

-For christmas, use red and green, and maybe use wrapping paper for the inner ears/foot pads

I like the teddy bear model a lot (Tutorial here) and think I'll try heaps more colour combinations and different variations of it. Got heaps more ideas for this one. Heres the different bears I've made so far. They'd be good for birthdays, valentines and baby gifts^_^

I'll post more pics of any new variations I make :-)

The light green one was the 2nd one I made. I forgot to make the ears from HALF sized triangles. No wonder why I had to use more pieces than usual. It took more normal sized pieces for it to curve, and was harder to fit into the head. I was also wondering why they looked like mouse ears. It looked too big for the head and I had to heep squeezing/bending to try make them smaller. Ears made from SMALLER pieces (half the size of the pieces you use to make the rest) are just easier to handle, fit into the head, and look more in proportion.

My most recent bears are the quilted ones. I wanted to make it look mix-matched and use cute, fun colours. Maybe cos all the clothes I see in shops these days use colour blocking and have asymetric/ mix matched patterns. I added polkadotted paper to the inner ears and foot pads and now the style kind of looks babiesh. I think it would suit as a baby gift? 3D origami patchwork teddy bear

Hey guys! Sorry I havent posted any vids in ages. I havent done much 3D origami in a while, and havent felt like making vids. Just had other things to do. I did make 2 3D origami models for Christmas gifts and thought I'd share it with you guys with a diagram as well. I was gonna put up a vid displaying them but finished them off last minute before the christmas function, so only had time to take a rushed/bad photo on my phone (with the bright light in the middle)

Its a variation from the teddy bear. Scroll down for the diagram and number of pieces.

I wanted to mix and match pastel colours to make a fun, patchwork inspired teddy. I also wanted to make use of the pieces I had a lot of that were ready-made and were just sitting there, and these were the colours I had a lot of. It kinda relates to patchwork how left over material is patched together^_^

Also used some scrap decorated paper (polkadot) for the foot pads and inner ears. I think adding patterned paper to fill in certain parts gives it a nice touch. You see it happening in fashion in the lining of coats, bags and shoes.

Overall it looks a bit odd because of the split face and stuff lol, but I like the colours. The yellows more light/pastel in real life than in the photo. Lighter colours look nicer for this (the patchwork) since the split face will look softer and less zombie-like. Could be a good baby gift? (just as an ornament on a shelf/room decoration etc.. too hard and pointy for a toy lol)

It might look better with different colours. I'm thinking light blue and cream. I'll try experiment more with this design

fold triangle piece from HALF the size of the rectangle you used for the rest of the body.This makes it look more proportioned/fit well. You can use normal sized pieces too (I did it once by mistake) thought it may look a bit big for the head. It may take more pieces to curve the ear and you may have to push/squeeze harder to made it fit into the head

*NOTE- If you're buying pieces from me to make this, I can only provide the normal sized pieces. You'll have to make the half sized pieces yourself (for the ears) using a similar colour of my paper, or even a different colour since having different coloured limbs looks ok as well.

3D origami crocodile/ a little story

One of my subscribers emailed and requested a 3D origami crocodile (Just to look at which she'll figure out how to make on her own). I was gonna say I didnt have time as I had uni assignments to do, but she mentioned it was for a nephew.

"This alligator or crocodile is for my nephew,6, who is a huge reptile lover, but is fighting for his life battling lung cancer. I just thought it would be nice to give him something to brighten his day."

Since I haven't done many 3D origami tutorials for ages and have been saying "I'm busy with uni" to a lot of people's requests, I thought I should do this one and make a difference to someone's day, and I did have time at that moment to make a quick small model during my 1 week holiday.

She's 13 and I thought it was mature and nice of her to think of making something for her nephew to brighten his day. I recently read a book called "The healing power of water by Masaru Emoto" and when I got this email, it felt like they linked? (You know, when you read a book and it mentions a word you don't know, or a situation, and then later that word comes up or a similar situation happens.)

In the book it mentions how positive words were stuck onto, and facing inside a bottle of water, and negative words on another (same type of water). He froze them and took a photo of the water crystals as you never get the same crystals. The one that "saw" positive words, formed pretty crystals, and the ones with negative words had half formed crystals and looked broken and ugly. Its about positive and negative vibrations and their effects. Apparently thoughts have vibrations, and when we hear positive/negative words, it gives a different effect/feeling.

What's also interesting is that humans are made up of around 60%? water and they say if words can do that to a bottle of water, imagine what it can do to us? Which explains how positive thinking works and how hurtful words/ negative self-talk can affect people. Anyway, they also tried the experiment with homemade food and takeout. The homemade food had high levels of 'hado' ( vibrations I think? yeah I think they had something to measure hado) compared to fastfood which is made in a rush/ with no care. When the person made the same homemade food but with bad thoughts (like "ugh why should I make this, I don't have time!!!"), it also had lower levels of hado. Recently my mum's friend came over and saw my mum making us lunch. She said (in diojiu) "Making food for your kids is good. They'll eat your love" which is mainly like putting effort/care into making something for someone, and they'll receive your love/ thoughtfulness.

This made me think about handmade gifts. They're special because the person made it especially for you, you can't get it anywhere else as they made it. It's one of a kind and made with love. Especially when its your favourite colour, favourite animal etc.. when someone makes you a specific thing cos they know you like it, you know they thought of you when they made it.

So I thought this person wanting to make a crocodile for her reptile-lover nephew was sweet and thoughtful. And since he's sick, a handmade gift would be the perfect thing for sending positive energy to him.

So those are some photos above, and a diagram below. I know it doesn't look that great, it's just the same structure as most of my small models, but showing the technique of how to make a mouth stick out (2 mouth pieces made separately and pushed in the head & glued). It might look more crocodile-ish with a dark green, and maybe a brighter yellow if you like. It might look good with google eyes, I dunno. And some small yellow triangles could be inserted in the middle back for the spine/spikes thing (use half the size of the normal triangles)

-The eyes are made like the ears of the 'green pig' tutorial ( at 2.14 in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMb7DwJyBsA) (sorry you have to see my thumbnails close up which were shit at the time. Was pressing too hard with my thumbs on something and they got thick & gross. Had to just wait to grow them out)

and the arms/legs are made like most of the other small models.

I'm into reading about "the secret/law of attraction", positive thinking, energy and all that stuff, and I read about how telling people your goals and stuff helps it happen. Since they're thinking about it too, then its like a combination of thoughts put out there which attracts more of the same thing ("throw something out there and it comes back to you"). If more people are thinking about it, the thought/vibration is more stronger. So I thought I'd mention the nephew in this post to add more meaning to it, rather than just uploading the pics/ diagram, so that maybe when you guys read about, it would help send positive energy to him :-)

I know I'm into all these weird theories and stuff which people are sceptic about, and I know they're exaggerated for movies and books, but I've had my experiences with positive thinking, so I know they work in little ways. All the best to that nephew and anyone else out there who's sick, or feeling down. Get well soon!^_^

Hey guys, sorry I haven't made tutorials in ages. Been busy with uni, and thought I'd have time in the holidays, but then I was given holiday assignments!

Anyway, I've uploaded some pics here to give you guys some new stuff to look at. Just thought I'd share some of my work from my last assignment, since there's some crochet in there.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

I developed an idea of a "cute soup" which I really like, and I don't think its an idea that's been done much before. It finally feels like something that's mine, more original, different to the cute animals I always make that pretty much look the similar to things that have been done before

(In the soup is a house, 2 cakes, an oreo cookie, and a cupcake)

The "Cute soup" was developed from a phrase "My favourite recipe" (We were given a list of phrases, had to pick 3, and develop artwork from them). So my idea was putting some of my favourite things (the cute/kawaii look, zakka style, homemade/ handicraft stuff) in a bowl of soup, making a recipe of favourite things, hence "My favourite recipe".

My tutors analysis of it was so much deeper lol. She said it was something that would get criticism from people because handicrafts is associated with the domestic and feminine, and considered inferior to 'high art' like painting, and that only men were artists back then, while women did crafts at home which was applied arts/ low art.

She said my work was a disruption of the art conventions and a statement that handicrafts is just as important and valid as an art form.

A class mate said it looked like an ideal soup for a kid that doesn't like eating vegetables, and just likes to eat sweet things^_^

I didnt know about crafts being inferior for being associated with the domestic and feminine. It gave me something to research and I realized there actually is more behind artwork. I used to think people bullshit about artworks and make up reasons/meanings but you can actually come up with honest issues/ideas and develop artwork from them.

I initially was gonna present it on a pedestal as a sculpture (the bowl of soup, and the plate of cute food) but the tutor suggested pinning it to the wall, which makes it more like a painting/ work of art, and makes a stronger statement.

I also developed the cute soup into a painting (yeah I know its amateur^_^ I just like the idea of it. Hope I can get better soon and develop it into a better piece of work ). The chinese bowl and soup spoon add a bit of culture into it as well.

The bubbles flying up were influenced by Alex Mcleod's work. I stitched patches of patterned fabric on them to add a crafty look to it. Its kinda like steam coming off the soup, and a smell/ aura of creativity I guess? lol. What does it look like to you? My tutor thought it was icecream scoops.

To me, the cute soup work is a compilation of: handicrafts, that zakka/ homemade style (soup seems homey/ cozy/ domestic to me, something your mum makes you when you're sick, or something you drink on a cold lazy day), a bit of asian-ness, like the bowl and soup spoon, and also the kawaii things in there (house, mushroom, bear/bunny clouds).

Doing art/design at uni has helped me explore more ideas, grow and develop my art style. I remember I started teaching crafts on youtube cos I wanted to teach how to make cool crafts, cos all the ones I saw on craft shows on TV were crappy lol. I wanted to show that crafts and handmade gifts weren't cheap and ugly. They were thoughtful, meaningful, and could actually look cool and be well-made as well, and be better than bought gifts.

After the tutor said that my work was a statement that crafts is just as valid and important, it was like she was bringing forward things at the back of my mind. When family friends saw my crafts displayed in the lounge and heard that people were ordering them, they said "does it even make that much money?!" in a jealous tone. Continuing to do crafts feels like resisting the criticism of other people.

Criticism as in the typical "art doesn't money". And from my mums 'friends' saying I was wasting my time teaching on youtube and that selling crafts doesnt make that much. Then I slowly got more successful overtime and they gave bitter looks when I got bulk orders and bigger commissions. I could tell they were jealous inside cos some of my commissions made more than their tray of bakery food. They would react by saying people are stupid to buy that (when they were selling overpriced cans of fizzy drinks. Aren't people stupid to buy that? hypcrites..).

Anyway, I feel like my work is resisting what people say about art/crafts, and its proof of me still sticking to it and doing it despite what they say. To anyone out there that has a passion, hobby, thing that they do, whether its music, writing, art, etc... that people are against for whatever reason, I hope you still continue on with it whenever you can, even on the side, and not let people take it away from you.

(The other 2 paintings of the people holding their arms up were from the phrase 'When I won'. They're just meant to be like those inspirational/ uplifting pictures. I went to those entrepreneurial 'how to be a millionaire/ how to be successful' seminars and this guy said "You have to saw it before you see it" (playing with past and present tense there)

He told a story of a guy who had plans for an amusement park (I think it was Disney land?). He drew/planned it all out, died before it was finished (His workers carried on building it), and someone said it was a shame he did't get to see it. Then his wife said no, he did see it, he saw it before all of us.

So the phrase "When I won" didn't make me think of when I won something in the past, but

when I WIN, when I get to where I want to be. With won replacing win, as if you have already won. Its like a vision of how you want to feel when you get there (I'm into the whole positive thinking/ visualization thing and 'The secret'/ "Law of attraction"- look it up if you dont know :-)

So those are some of my works from my last assignment. I hope I can get better at painting someday so I can actually get out my thoughts accurately. Those paintings of the people holding their arms out dont look as inspirational as I wanted them to be. It sucks when you have a good idea but cant accurately express it lol. Anyway, I'll add some more pics of my other assignments later.

big 3D origami bear with 3D limbs

This is the bear I made for a 21st birthday present.

I now have a video tutorial for the teddy bear! Tutorial here! BUT I havent shown how to make the ears or attach the limbs so you'll still have to look at the diagram and read the written instructions.

Heres the diagram, and extra notes/instructions on making it. Enjoy~ :-)

(diagram in blue and orange so you can see it better. Make them any colour you want)

LAST 3 ROWS of head:

row 17: [2 decreases, 2 normal] all the way around until you get to the end, there will only be space for 2 more decreases. so there will be 4 decreased pieces next to each other at the end. Start & end wherever you want. Preferably near the back of the head so you don't see the odd decreasing at the end.

row 18: Decrease all around. At the end there will only be room for 1 normal piece (going over 2 points)

row 19(last row): normal row. Each piece goes over 2 points

EARS

make a 'stick' of 20 MINI pieces. So the pieces are made from half the size of the rectangle you used to make the head. Stack the pieces into a stick and bend/curve it. Snip slits along the bottom of the pieces, underneath the curve (NOT the bump of the pieces, which are on the top)

gluing ears- I think I put an inverted piece at the bottom part of the ear, so that it sticks into the head better (didnt include that in the diagram). figure out where you want to put the ear (no specific place), find a hole in the bear head, for the top and bottom points of the ears to fit into. glue in place

GLUING AMS & LEGS

Do your best to try and match the points of the legs to the holes of the body. It wont fit perfectly. (not every point of the legs can go into a hole). Once most of the points are aligned to a hole in the body, kind of shove it in/ push it in deeper to open the holes of the body a bit.

Then take the leg out but remember how you fit it into the body/where the points go. Put PVA glue (the white glue that dries clear. There are other names too: wood glue, craft glue etc..) on the top of the legs where the points are, shove it back into the body, hold it until it dries (maybe for 30secs to a minute?)

ARMS- for the arms I just squeezed hot glue on the top part on the inside of the arm and stuck it to the body. Since its a flat panel it's easier. You can probably use PVA glue too. You may still have to hold the arm for a while for the glue to dry

New 3D origami graduation bears + diagram

I recently got a request from a friend for graduation bears with coloured hoods (to match the degrees). She'll be giving them to her graduating friends which will be a cool gift since they're personalized, compared to a bought graduation teddy (which makes handmade gifts AWESOME since you can customize them^_^).

These bears are slightly better than the old ones I made, there's no increasing on the mouth. I've made a new DIAGRAM for you guys (at the bottom of the page).

(I'll add a link to a tutorial when I make one)

-To make guy and girl bears, the girls have pink cheeks and different ears, while the guys don't have pink cheeks, and have rounded ears.

-The colours of the tassels also make them more guy-ish/ girly (pink & yellow for girls, blue for guys)

-And 2 other special requests were to make a gangsta bear and a pedobear^_^

-And again, my fav part is that the hoods match the colour of the degrees^_^ LOVE personalized gifts!

3D origami diagram~ Graduation bears

I made these for these twin sisters that were graduating (Hence there are 2 of the same Graduation bears^_^)

Heres a diagram of them. I haven't had time to draw how to make the tassel yet, (you can just google it for now) but I'll upload the tassel instructions on here when I've drawn them.

Normal sized swan & Bigger swan

PIECES
770 white pieces (+48 for the neck)
494 colored pieces (+23 for the neck)
1 black

1. Start with 9 white 'mountains' (4,3,2,1) and 9 diamonds. (as shown in the normal sized swan vid linked above)
2. Outline the diamonds 3 times
3. Add another row of diamonds
4. Outline the diamonds 1 time
5. Add another row of diamonds

CHEST:
6. 2 white outlines on 2 diamonds
7. between 2 outlines (between the mountains) make a diamond
8. Around the diamond make 1 white outline
9. Add color outline
10. And add another white outline until the last colored piece (leave it for the neck)
11. Fill out the spaces between the diamonds with white

TAIL (inverted)

NOTES:

-The measurements are there as a guide so you can draw the shapes the same size as mine, but you can make it any size. They're simple shapes to draw so you can roughly copy this, and it doesn't matter if it's a little bit different.

-You can modify it to be another animal. Change the shape and position of ears to make a monkey, bear etc...

-Cut the head &; body shapes (2 each, front & back) with a SEAM ALLOWANCE (GAP around the outline) because you will sew around and turn inside out later on.

- The shapes in the blue box (on the right side) don't need a seam allowance cos you'll sew them straight onto the plushie. There's no turning inside out or anything.

-The green lines at the neck of the head & body shapes show that you leave a gap there when sewing so you can turn it inside out later.

SMALL LIMBS FOR SMALL AMIGURUMI PLUSHIES

I've looked everywhere on how to make small limbs and I dont think anyone has come up with a way. They either had thin yarn and did a ring of 5 or 6 and crocheted normally in a circle and built up, but its still too big for my tiny size. Or they just cut out shapes of felt and sewed on.

After experimenting so many times, I came up with this way of making small limbs. So its not how you would usually make limbs for amigurumi. You have to crochet small strips and sew together

Heres a pattern of my small plushies- MINI amigurumi bear, rabbit or other animal
and how to make small limbs (later in the pattern)

You fold it up and sew together to create a thickened 'strip' for arms and legs. You make an arm and bend it to make an ear

I write my patterns a bit differently.

*You can change the stitches to 'half double crochet' if you want, thicker stiches to make a bigger plushie.

You can also use 2 strands of different yarn together (and can use different colours to create nice colour combinations!^_^) to make a bigger plush (might have to use a bigger hook).
A great way to create a different size while following the exact same pattern. This way you don't have to think up a new pattern figuring out how to make it bigger.

The plushie will look bigger or smaller depending on the thickness of the yarn. (Btw, I dont pay attention to my yarn or hook size. I use any size and then just change to a bigger hook if the yarn seems too thick for it)

Heres some new kawaii goodness for you guys to look at! ^_^

Amigurumi plushies I'm working on:

A lot of them I've started and just left there unfinished. It gets annoying cos it just creates more clutter, I feel the 'need' to finish them to kinda clean up, but then I don't have time and it gets kinda stressful. It feels kinda like a chore to finish off the project, to clean up the clutter lying around, otherwise you just put it in a bag and store it away and then forget about them.

So, advice from me: Don't keep starting new crafts when you havent finished your old projects! Lol. And dont hoard materials either, thinking you don't wanna waste it. Cos then you buy more, end up having too much and will have to use it up anyway. I use to make little plushies cos I'd make more and save yarn.
But from my experience, medium/ big plushies are easier to make. With smaller ones its harder to sew on limbs, so I leave them for later and then end up not doing it, and end up with a bunch of little unfinished plushies. So now I don't worry about making bigger ones and using up the yarn cos they're easier to make (easier to hold and stitch parts together, and you wont lose those bits either while you're making it, compared with making little plushies.) and they make better gifts! ^_^

I'll try write up patterns for them later and will upload them on here :-)

Why 3D origami is 'meaningful' to me

This question made me realize how much I appreciate 3D origami. I did give a different answer about why it's more convenient and easier for me than other crafts like amigurumi/plushies, but there's more than that about why its special to me (but was too long to write in a youtube comment, so I decided to write it on my blog).

I do get that it gets boring folding the pieces and that its too easy cos you just make a bunch of the same triangle units and can make almost anything from it. Its not 'challenging'<-which is what origami fans say to me on youtube, and ask me if I do other origami. But in case you guys don't know, I dont actually like normal flat origami, so I dont care about doing 'challenging' crafts. I like aesthetically pleasing handicrafts. Even though just liking the LOOK of something seems shallow to people, or 'basic' and not really understanding the deeper meaning/purpose etc..like doing it for the challenge, the fun of making it etc..I like good looking crafts that make nice GIFTS for people.

With flat origami its impressive that it's made from a sheet of paper, but afterwards I'm not likely to keep it or display it. I used to do it for fun when I was little, something challenging to kill boredom. But I just used scrap paper, cos I knew it wasnt something I would like enough to keep, and threw it away later. I like more 3D, sculptural stuff which are strong, solid and make better looking displays, something I'm likely to keep.

With 3D origami I've been able to give them as gifts to teachers, doctors, people that have helped me. Some of my old subscribers would know that 3D origami became more 'meaningful' to me when I gave a large green/gold peacock to a dermatologist that treated my severe eczema infection.

(DIAGRAM provided at bottom of this post)

Long story short: (well, still kinda long)
-I had infected eczema which spread to the whole face and body, the normal doctors couldnt treat it. (started with an allergic reaction to nivea moisturizer! Ruined like 3 years of my life!)
-I didnt wanna keep going to the doctors cos they didnt tell me to come back if their antibiotics and pills didnt work, so I thought they'd get sick of me coming back all the time cos they didnt know what to do about it. I thought it would heal by itself naturally if I just drank lots of water, ate healthy and got lots of sleep.
-It was on going for about 3 months. Worst pain I've ever experienced in my life. Couldnt sleep, showering was extremely painful, and at the beginning of each day my only thought was that I couldn't wait till the day was over.

-One day it got really bad at school, I went to the bathroom to dab water on my face. This girl came in. She was in some of my classes, I only taked to her a bit, didn't know her that well, but she asked me if I wanted to go to the nurse. I said no cos I didn't think the nurse could do anything about it. She just talked for a while saying like "Is this why you were away all of last week?" And then later asked a second time: "Do you want me to take you to the nurse? "
I just agreed
-After talking to the nurse, she said I couldnt go on living like that and had to see a doctor and tell her to refer me to a dermatologist.
-So I did that, but she said the health system is slow and that I'd have to wait 6 months. But later on it got bad again and the doctor just rang up the hospital so I could just go straight away.
-After seeing the dermatologist it healed up in 3 days after taking immuno suppressants. I was so grateful it finally healed, cos I've never seen skin that bad before so I didn't think it was possible to heal. (although it came back and was on & off for 3 years, that was the start of me getting proper help from the hospital.)

-That was kind of a spiritual/meaningful moment when that girl helped me, cos it all started with her taking me to the nurse, which lead to me being able to go to the hospital. She was one of those students that didn't come to school a lot so it was lucky she came to school on that day, and that she came to the bathroom at the time I was there. It was also lucky that we had study period that time, so she was free to take me to the nurse. The fact that we were there at the same place at the same time just felt like everything was happening at the right time, like how people say 'the universe works in certain ways' to help you, and everything falls into place.

If that didnt happen, I dunno what I'd be like now, cos I kept refusing to see the doctor since they kept giving me pills that didnt work. It felt like everything was hopeless and I didn't know if anyone could treat it, and then that girl just helped me unexpectedly, so it felt like being "trapped under wreckage where for months I agonized and longed to be pulled out"(<-something from Bryce Avary's blog) and then suddenly being 'rescued' and "pulled out from a sinking ship".

I gave the dermatologist a large green/gold peacock (shown above), and I also gave some small models to the girl that helped me, and the school nurse. I'm thankful for my craft skills and especially 3D origami, cos if I didn't know how to make those, I wouldnt've been able to show my thanks to the people that helped me, other than say "Thank you" which isnt really enough. A large 3D origami gift would show ones appreciation and how thankful they are, in the
hundreds and thousands of folded units in the sculpture.

I was also selling little models around my school at the time and I would never have thought of giving a big model away for free before cos I was too stingy lol. But since that time, I was really grateful that my skin healed and gave the dermatologist a large model to show my appreciation, and he was amazed by it. Since then, I've been giving away big models as gifts and it just seems more 'meaningful'.

I can't do that with other crafts. Plus, with 3D origami, its something appropriate I can give. It would be weird to give a plushie I made lol. It doesn't look as inspiring, it's just like a stuffed toy. Maybe appropriate for a birthday gift, but not like something you give a doctor for helping you. Same with normal origami. It's just a folded sheet of paper. Impressive for a while, but I can't do anything with it. That's why I like 3D origami better, it's something I can give as a gift to people, and something that they can display and keep for a long time.

I also recently got my wisdom teeth taken out, and the dentist and receptionist were really nice, so I gave them both a little 3D origami tooth when I went back to get my stitches out. The dentist was like "I'm gonna keep this on my desk forever."Then just yesterday, I was in the area, walked past the dentist and in the window I saw the 2 cute teeth models on the receptionist's desk (and its like 'Aww cute! Oh wait, I made that!). Just like a dog pees on a tree to mark its territory, or how kids scrape into desks and chairs at school "I was here" to make a mark to show they've been there, giving 3D origami models and then seeing it on display reminds me that I've been there, and gave that to them. It also shows that people keep it for a long time.

So thats why I do 3D origami. I don't care that its not challenging. I like aesthetically pleasing handicrafts cos they make great gifts. I'm constantly thinking of the next birthday or christmas gift coming up. Even if its a year early (yeah thats how prepared I am^_^), cos I want to have enough time to think up, design, and make the next gift, better than the last one I gave them.

Also through teaching on youtube, a lot of people have written me their long stories just like mine, about how its helped them. A girl visited her old teacher that helped her before. That teacher was having a bad day, about to quit her job cos of people yelling at her, and then that girl came to give her an origami bouquet of flowers to thank her for helping her years back, and it made her day. Another person gave a 3D origami koifish to a cold doctor, who then became more friendly and wanted to help, and moved an appointment for surgery to an earlier date, which saved someone losing a second leg.

3D origami is more 'inspiring'. Its like a sculpture that a lot of people might not have seen before, with thought/effort folded in every piece. Because of its intricate look and 3D structure, its more likely to make a treasured gift and be displayed somewhere where people can look at it and think of the person that gave it to them. I've given some to people and they say they get a lot of comments on it. Its a conversation piece, an inspiration sculpture that gives off this inspirational/positive 'vibe' especially if it was given to someone for a specific reason, like for helping them or something. And I don't know of any other craft form that does this.

As mentioned above, here's the diagram of the peacock that got me into giving big models as gifts. There's a Tutorial as well, a different colour version but similar pattern. Cutting ears, arms & legs: I try to cut as little as possible around the sides of the pieces to keep as much of the triangle pieces as possible. I keep the scissors close to the edge, and snip little bits off. The excess paper comes off as tiny little bits, you dont need to cut much. The edges arent even smooth-curved, but little straight blocky bits. Far away it looks curved, and close up, it still looks like its made of the triangle pieces.

Inserting ears & arms: You dont have to insert where I drew the red rectangles on the bear. Sometimes theres no exact place to put it cos it may look uneven/ not in the right place, so you have to adjust it. Just insert the arms/ears in the holes of the model where you want them to go, wherever it looks right to you. You can move them around till you find the right spot, then glue them in place.

my new design- 3D origami wedding ornament

This is what Ive been working on for the last week for someones upcoming wedding. Took 3 days to make(1st time making it/modifying it as I went along, so it took longer) (already had pieces made- I make pieces before I make anything and store them until I need them)

Features:

-Chinese bride and groom in a wedding basket/love boat looking thing

has the chinese wedding symbol 'double happiness' on the back.

-Fades from bottom to top, pink to peach with cute polkadots throughout it to blend it as well as polkadots along the handle

-Corrugated cardboard base

-Ribbon heart strung in the middle from the handle, down to the base

-Ribbon rose at the top

Some mistakes actually improved it. I started from the peach bit, found that the bowl was too short so the bride and groom covered the letters. Had to make the bowl taller, so I started again with light pink, and made it fade to peach to connect the one I originally made to make it taller.

So I think the fading from pink to peach, and polkadots looks nice, and I wouldn't've thought of it if I hadnt made the bowl too short

I've been working on some new 3D origami models, and finally finsihed some good ones last night: (boy and girl strawberry heads, bride and groom- havent done the brides head yet, rabbit and panda suit, sweet bunny with carrot )

I'm also working on a 3D origami house! still needa do the roof. And I've modified the dragon boat, it looked too big, now its got 3 triangles in the middle of the body instead of 4, and the back and tail isnt exactly the same as the head, people thought was a 2 headed dragon and thought I forgot to add eyes on the other end, so I've made the tail smaller/different to the head
