Jewelry Camp Scholarship

Application deadline is April 30, 2012.

Centereach, NY, November 7, 2011— Antique Jewelry & Art Conference, “Jewelry Camp,” Directors Edward/Sandy Lewand invite all interested to apply for the Romero-Weber Jewelry Camp Scholarship.

Named for the late Christie Romero and Barry Weber, the scholarship honors the pair’s countless, longstanding contributions to the jewelry industry and provides the recipient with the cost of tuition for the Antique Jewelry & Art Conference, “Jewelry Camp,” that will be held July 27-29, 2012, at the Renaissance Westchester Hotel in White Plains, New York.

“All of us in the jewelry community were greatly saddened by the loss of Christie Romero to cancer in late 2009,” said Jewelry Camp Director Sandy Lewand. “In tribute to Christie, Barry Weber of Edith Weber Jewelry had the idea to establish a Christie Romero Scholarship Fund for Jewelry Camp. Yet, just one year later, Barry, too, succumbed to the disease. To carry on Christie’s and Barry’s remarkable legacies, Edward and I will continue to offer this memorial scholarship, which we have renamed the Romero-Weber Jewelry Camp Scholarship Fund.”

Applicants for the 2012 Romero-Weber Jewelry Camp Scholarship must compose a brief essay or email that explains why he or she should be selected to receive the award. All applications should be sent to jewelrycamp@me.com no later than April 30, 2012. The award recipient will be announced in May to allow ample time to make arrangements to attend the conference. While the scholarship covers Jewelry Camp tuition, the costs of lodging, travel, and food remain the responsibility of the recipient.

Title: Associate Appraiser

I.                   Job Summary:

The primary purpose of the Associate Appraiser is to provide support in the operational activities of the Estate Jewelry department for retail sales support, auction reporting, purchasing and sales, special client services and estate jewelry sourcing.

II.                Key Duties, Responsibilities, and Accountabilities: (in order of importance)

Retail Services Support
·         Provide Retail Replacement Valuations for all new purchases as requested by the global retail salon network.
·         Produce Updated Retail Replacement and Estate valuations as priced by the Manger of Estate Jewelry.

Auction Purchasing and Sales
·         Produce reports for diamonds, colored gemstones and Harry Winston jewelry offered at the International Auction Houses.
·         Distribute auction market data to relevant parties with Harry Winston, Inc.
·         Assist in identifying diamonds, colored gemstones and Harry Winston jewelry for potential purchase.

Special Client Services
·         Assist with providing special services such as authentication or historical information to the trade and private clients.
·         Respond to web, telephone and walk-in client inquiries.

Estate Jewelry
·         Assist with purchasing and sourcing estate jewelry from private clients and the trade.
·         Track and report on items purchased by the department.
·         Organize and maintain archive stock cards, job books, vintage catalogues and advertisements.
·         Utilize archived information for the purposes of authentication and/or manufacturing.
·         Assist in the preparations of Harry Winston and Estate Jewelry lectures and presentations.

III.             Key Job Relationships:
·         Internal: The candidate will report directly to the Manager of Estate Jewelry.
·         Internal: The candidate will work closely with the global salon staff, merchandise planning, gem acquisition and merchandise fulfillment.
·         External: The candidate will work with private clients and the jewelry trade.

IV.             Job Qualifications:
·         Graduate Gemologist required.
·         College degree preferred.
·         1-2 years of luxury retail experience, jewelry preferred.
·         Strong administrative skills, particularly writing skills.
·         Committed to client service and sales executive support.
·         Proficiency in Excel, Word, PowerPoint and other standard Windows based programs as well as diverse general knowledge in utilizing computer functions.

I. Job Summary:

To centralize, organize, classify, code and manage the Harry Winston archives. The first goal will be to implement a system that will make the various archives completely searchable through digital media. Once implemented the Archivist will be responsible for maintaining the archives and inputting new information, as well as using the system to provide output to help achieve Corporate goals.   Concurrent with organizing the Harry Winston archives, the Archivist will be responsible for conducting research and providing any other assistance necessary toward the publication of the Harry Winston brand book to be published in 2012.

The archives consist of:

·         Retail Replacement Valuations

·         Invoices

·         Job Books

o   Job Books contain renderings or copied images of jewelry that was actually produced and contain all component information, date of manufacture and stock number

o   Job Books contain the component and total cost of each piece and its tag price

·         Stock Books

o   Stock Books contain the job number and all of the information included in the Job Book (except an image) along with from whom the components or the piece was purchased, the date of manufacture, date of sale, purchasers last name and invoice number

o   Stock Books contain rough diamond purchases and a detailed listing of each diamond cut from the rough

·         Stock Cards

Position: Manager-Diamond Operations
Department: Gemstone Acquisition
Reporting to: Director, Gemstone Purchasing

About the Position:
The primary purpose of the Manager Diamond Operations is to ensure the smooth and continuous flow of output from the Diamond team.
The secondary purpose of this position is to function as the liaison for the diamond group on supplier payment, inventory control and Merchandising issues, both Planning and Fulfillment.
The third purpose is to assist the Manager of Gemstone Purchasing in pricing and vendor relationship issues, as warranted.

Key Duties and Accountabilities:
·         Ensuring the smooth flow of output from the diamond team; ensuring that supplier and other departments within the organization are being serviced at an appropriate level and resolving any issues that arise in the course of day-to-day operations.

·         Generating and ensuring the accuracy of the Buy List for distribution to the diamond division.

·         Applying center stones, melee and side stones physically and systematically to the orders generated by the Merchandise Fulfillment group.

·         Ensuring the orders written by Merchandise Fulfillment are accurate with regards to stone sizes and counts and that the proper lead times are utilized when the orders are written.

·         Effectively Managing the Administration team including but not limited to; hiring and training of staff, scheduling, performance reviews and issues, timely deliveries of work orders into production and in ensuring the smooth flow of all daily activities of the group.

·         Ensuring that the diamond team is fulfilling work orders on a timely basis. This is to be accomplished by frequent reviews of the pending work bags to ensure that the work is being completed on or ahead of schedule, that the proper priorities are being met, re-assigning work bags to ensure a continuous flow of merchandise into production and notifying Merchandise Planning and Fulfillment on a timely basis, on job bags that will be delayed in Sourcing.

·         Ensuring accurate inventory counts on the loose lot inventory and reconciling the inventory at the end of each month.

·         Assisting the Manager of Gemstone Purchasing in generating TAG price calculations, pricing estimates and supplier relationship issues, as warranted.

Please note that if you wish to attend either of these classes it is suggested that you bring a loupe (if you do not have a loupe Kassoy will have them along with many other tools).

Upon entering either of these four classes or any other of the classes that requires the handling of Jewelry, you will not be allowed to exit until the end of the class for security purposes.

PHASE I

We will start with 20 trays, a single piece of jewelry per tray covered with numbered piece of paper, 1 thru 20.

Each person will receive a number 1 thru 20, you will then have 10 seconds to uncover one piece at a time you may look at them with a loop but, NO TOUCHING.
You will then recover the item with the numbered paper and write down NO MORE THAN 3 WORDS. Everyone will then shift to the right and we will repeat this process 20 times.

We will then have an open discussion with PowerPoint of pictures only using the 3 words you have each chosen to write down for each piece.

PHASE II

In this phase the process is repeated with a twist. You are now in front of the tray that has your number (the piece is covered). This time you will have 60 seconds to uncover and examine the piece with a loop then cover the item you then have 30 seconds to write down information about the piece. Move to the right and repeat this process 20 times.

PHASE III

PowerPoint discussion on what you should have picked up on each piece with full text.

Our January event was a great success, bringing Tom Burstein, the Vice President of Harry Winston Sales and Nicolas Luchsinger, Vice President of Van Cleef & Arpels to lecture on one stage. This was Tom’s idea and a great one as it turned out. Even though we have brought you both of these gentlemen before, this was really the first time to hear and see both great houses on one stage. To be able to see side by side the beauty of each and the differences, why they shared so many famous and great clients and why. How each house had it’s own style and feel for each occasion and how each client at different time chose each of these two fine houses to create a wonder for them and all to see.

Our other speakers included Donna Bilak whose talk was of the highest caliber and will be of the same standard this summer as she opens Jewelry Camp on July 15, 2011 with her informative lecture on, Flora Bejeweled: Horticulture, Jewelry and the Victorian Language of Flowers.

Ulysses Dietz again gave a marvelous talk on, Objects of Desire, 500 years of Jewelry and this summer he will talk about his first love of Silver.

1910: THE TWILIGHT OF THE EDWARDIAN ERA

In 1902 Albert Edward, Price of Wales, was crowned Edward, King and Emperor of Britain and the Empire, and the beautiful Princess Alexandra, his Queen. The sobriety of the Victorian years was replaced by the extravagant, fun loving decade known as the “Edwardian Era”, dating from 1901 to 1910. In fact, the Edwardian style began circa 1890 and ended circa 1915. Edward VII was a dandy; his Queen epitomized the elegance, gentility and femininity that defined the period, and the jewelry.

Edwardian style was heavily influenced by the 18th century, the period with which the Edwardians had most in common. In reaction to the heavy 19th century sprays, jewelry of 1910 was made to look razor thin, as delicate as fine lace. The commercial use of platinum, which began in Paris in about 1903 and in England three years later, enabled jewelers to use a minimum of this very strong but malleable metal to hold a stone in place, and revolutionized the jewelry of the decade, and the burgeoning century. A profusion of openwork bow knots and ribbons, festoons of floral garlands and intricately saw-pierced rococo designs proliferated, set with European-cut diamonds and large Oriental pearls considered equal in value to the diamonds.

Tightly corseted “S shape” gowns were fashionable, and beautiful silks and lace, created an elegant “all white” look when combined with platinum set diamonds, and pearls. Popular gemstones included Montana sapphires, pale opals, demantoid garnets, and amethyst were most evident. New stones included kunzite and morganite, named for gemologist George Kunz and financier J.P. Morgan.

To the Edwardians, more was better! As in ancient times, emphasis was on the upper torso. Bodices glittered with crescents, stars, and corsage ornaments, worn simultaneously. A “dog collar”, comprised of a diamond-set plaque and up to16 strands of small pearls, was the most popular jewel, ubiquitous because the Queen wore one to hide a throat scar. Long chains interspaced with pearls or diamonds, called sautoires were added, as were multiple strands of various length pearl necklaces. A pendant could be added to the end of the sautoire, and a wide variety of designs included floral baskets, pearl fringes, and “upside down” pendants that resembled handkerchiefs. Other styles included the lavaliere and the “negligee” necklace or brooch which featured two pendants of uneven length. Earrings were comprised of large oval pearl drops often suspended from a row of diamond collets. And by the King’s command, it was de rigueur for ladies of society to wear a tiara; diamond necklaces were supplied with the appropriate findings for conversion.

Upper crust American society had been marrying impoverished members of European royalty, in exchange for titles since the successful marriage in 1860 of Jenny Jerome to Lord Randolph Churchill. Many such marriages followed, including Consuelo Vanderbilt to the Duke of Marlboro. Fabulous jewels were worn in regal abundance in America and abroad.

The arrival in Paris in 1910 had brought an explosion of flamboyant color. Exotic costumes designed by Leon Bakst, dances choreographed by Diaghilev, and the music of Rimsky-Korsakov and Igor Stravinsky radically changed what jewelry and the world would look like, and trumpeted a visual fanfare for the end of an era that will not be seen again in our lifetime.

All of us in the jewelry community were greatly saddened by the loss of Christie Romero in late 2009. Rather than making a donation to the American Cancer Society, Barry Weber of Edith Weber Jewelry had the idea to establish a Christie Romero Scholarship Fund for Jewelry Camp. Who could have imagined that one year later the jewelry industry would lose another beloved faculty member. As most of you know we lost Barry Weber late 2010 to this horrible disease. Edward and I would like to continue the scholarship that Barry established a short time ago but feel it is only fitting to rename the scholarship to the Romero-Weber Jewelry Camp Scholarship Fund.

Applicants for the 2011 scholarship should composes a brief essay or email explaining why they should be selected to attend.

Martha M. Banks

Martha M. Banks, 61, died at home on Wednesday. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael J. Banks. Martha was a five-year breast cancer survivor.

Born in Scranton, on Aug. 23, 1949, daughter of the late Robert J. and Martha Ferber McGregor, she was a 1967 graduate of Abington Heights High School. During high school, she excelled in gymnastics and field hockey and was a repeat diving champion on the YWCA swim team. She was a 1971 graduate of Ithaca College, where after competing in national and international diving competitions, she capped a distinguished athletic career by becoming New York state collegiate women's diving champion of 1971. Martha co-founded the Jewelry Room in Clarks Summit in 1976 with Michael J. Banks and operated it with him until his death in 2007. She then continued the business with the assistance of her stepson, David Banks.

The Jewelry Room was founded to specialize in fine gold and silver jewelry, genuine stones and antique/estate jewelry, with a strong emphasis on personal service. Martha continued her jewelry studies with classes and seminars at specialized educators in the jewelry trade, among them the Gemological Institute of America and Stewart's International School for Jewelers. She also attended mineral and gem shows throughout the United States and summer jewelry conferences. New York City's trade jewelry neighborhoods and high-end stores provided her with a continual learning experience for 35 years.

Martha also was a jewelry educator, sharing her enthusiasm and expertise by speaking at clubs and meetings.

She died peacefully, surrounded by her family. The family deeply appreciates the compassionate care provided by Hospice of the Sacred Heart and by our devoted home caregivers.

She is survived by two sisters, Heather McGregor, New York; and Anne M. Fries and husband, Richard, Michigan; a brother, Robert R. and wife, Virginia D., Scranton; four nieces, Grace, Margaret, Virginia E. and Mary Martha McGregor; four nephews, Timothy and Daniel Fries and Robert S. and William McGregor; four stepchildren, Kimberly B. Gahl and husband, Peter, California; Michael Banks and wife, Jennifer, California; David Banks and wife, Kimberly, Lake Winola; and Jason Banks and fiancée, Vanessa, California; and seven stepgrandchildren, Hannah, Maxwell, Brittany, Molly and Mia Banks and Lily and Peter Gahl.

The family will receive friends at the family home, 511 Colburn Ave., Clarks Summit, today from 4 to 6 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Abington Community Library, 1200 W. Grove St., South Abington Twp., PA 18411; or First Presbyterian Church of Clarks Summit, 300 School St., Clarks Summit, PA 18411.

Mr. Edward Lewand

Mr. Edward Lewand is a recognized authority in the area of jewelry appraisal and consultation, a renown achieved through an extensive background of both training and experience. Mr. Lewand attained his Graduate Gemologist diploma from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in 1979 and has since embarked on a career in the industry spanning more than 30 years. His credentials include work as an appraiser, educator, consultant, gemstone and estate buyer, and expert witness. He is an Accredited Senior Appraiser with the American Society of Appraisers (ASA), a Certified Appraiser with the Appraisers Association of America (AAA), and a licensed insurance broker in New York State. Mr. Lewand has lectured and taught on jewelry and appraisal at organizations including universities, trade groups, appraisal associations, and insurance companies. He presently offers independent appraisal and consultation services for private and trade clients and serves as Director of the Antique Jewelry and Art Conference (“Jewelry Camp”).

Mr. Lewand’s presentation will explore the information and competencies required for success both in buying and in selling antique and estate jewelry. As regards buying, the discussion will progress from the micro, i.e., identifying and authenticating period pieces through details in workmanship, to the macro, i.e., determining appropriate prices to pay in light of broader market and economic considerations. With respect to selling, the focus will center on developing a successful business model, which again will incorporate micro and macro insofar as relates to pricing and marketing.
