Blue abalone shell, wow this pieces is just stunning! the blue is, well so blue with shades of pink and purple. Then you have the darker blue lines and puddles which remind me of the sand at low tide. I thought little white freshwater pearls would be perfect with this glorious piece of ‘shell artwork’ all mixed up with some shiny silver!

I bought this kyanite ‘slice’ because it looks so beautiful, I wasn’t really sure what I was going to do with it! I decided to set it in silver but it was a truly awkward shape so i added some keshi pearls to the setting. It looked pretty good so I then had to decide what next to do. I thought a double strand of silver chain,keshi pearl,apatite and faceted black onyx would look good but it needed something else? 12 strands of silver chain,apatite,keshi pearl,faceted black onyx and really gorgeous black opals, all handing from the pendant of the necklace, did I mention that it became a necklace?

This necklace is so summery, it has three mother of pearl stones,one moonstone and one labradorite stone hand set in silver. I recently attended the Bead and Button show in Milwaukee, WI. I learned the technique of Keum Boo.

Keum Boo is an ancient technique which fuses 24k gold to fine silver. It is an ancient Korean gilding technique. Pure precious metals like gold and silver have similar anatomic structures and, therefore, can be bonded.

The fine silver or sterling silver which has been depleted creating a layer of fine silver, must be heated up to 500-700 degrees fahrenheit for the gold to create a bond. Then you burnish the gold to the silver to create a complete bond.

The piece in the picture was oxidized to allow for even more contrast but it is equally as pretty without the oxidation.

Keum boo is a great way to add value and depth to your silver pieces.

Beautiful Bracelet with Pearls Pearls & more Pearls

I love freshwater pearls and these days the possibilities are endless with freshwater pearls! You can get them in any shape or color. My favorite shape is keshi, which look kinda like fruity pebbles. Lately I have been making bracelets that involve a lot of pearls. I pick a color, then vary the shades and shapes to make a charm-like bracelet. I hand string freshwater pearls with swarovski crystals onto antique copper and brass headpins and wrap em up tight! Then I painstakingly open and close chain links and indivually add one pearl at a time. I try to throw in a glass or gemstone briolette here and there.

To finish it off I add a toggle clasp. This clasp here is an antique coppper flower toggle clasp that I import for Istanbal, Turkey! To veiw more pics of this bracelet head over to my etsy store at GeishaCreations.etsy.com

I recently have been getting more and more into semi-precious stones. While browsing a little shop downtown Spokane, I cam across a stone I had never used before, Kyanite. It is instantly my new favorite. It is iridescent like labradorite, but in a vibrant pale blue color. I have been searching the web for wholesale Kyanite ever since! I used long teardrops to make these beautiful earrings. A simple wire-wrap job and sterling silver earring wires complete the look. Sometimes when you have a piece of stone so pretty, simplicity is best!

With the last post of Gemstone Each Month Series (GEMS) – May, we would writing on how to care for Emerald Jewelry and Gemstone. Do use these tips in general too, to keep your jewelry last long. Also showcasing a very beautiful Emerald Brooch kept at Museum of Natural History, Washington.

Continuing with Emerald Jewelry care tips, here we go :-

Emeralds are generally found without fissures and surface cracks, so it’s common for them to have been oiled, waxed or filled with resin.
Though they have a good hardness, but due to inclusions and fissures they can easily break or chip on impact. So you should wear the emerald jewelry carefully. Also you can keep emerald in your jewelry surrounded with harder gemstones like diamond to avoid direct impact.
Every 2-3 years, you can give it to an experienced jeweler to re-oil your emerald, which would keep make it look good longer.
Clean emerald jewelry with a soft, dry cloth only. Avoid exposing emerald to harsh chemicals.
Store your Emerald Jewelry in a dry place, preferably away from sunlight. Also don’t store them in the same compartments of bags as diamonds and sapphires to prevent scratches to the emeralds.
