Speaker Biography ~
Sheryl Bouer, is a United States Postal Inspector assigned to the Atlanta Division of the United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) in Atlanta, GA. She is a sworn federal law enforcement agent and authorized criminal investigator in any criminal matter involving the integrity and security of the U.S. Postal Service. She is responsible for protecting the Postal Service and securing the nations mail system. She performs investigative and security - related duties to ensure that the U.S. Postal system remains safe and can be trusted by the public.
As a Postal Inspector, Inspector Bouer is required to carry a firearm, make arrests, provide testimony, serve subpoenas, execute search warrants, prepare comprehensive reports, conduct extensive investigations, pursue and restrain suspects, and protect themselves and others from imminent danger.

For the last two years, Inspector Bouer has been assigned to the Mail Fraud Team which investigates violations of Title 18, United States Code (USC), Section 1341, Mail Fraud; Title 18, USC, Section 1343 Wire Fraud and Title 18, USC, Section 1344, Bank Fraud. Prior to investigating mail fraud cases, Inspector Bouer investigated child exploitation cases. She has approximately seven years' experience with the USPIS enforcing federal laws as they relate to the United States Mail. Prior to becoming a U.S. Postal Inspector, she was a Police Officer with the City of Atlanta for five years.

Erin Wolf, is the Managing Partner of SuiteTrack, a firm dedicated to helping companies develop and accelerate the advancement of their female professionals. SuiteTrack’s programs include workshops, executive coaching and case studies designed to develop women’s leadership competencies.

With more than 25 years of work experience, Erin has a diverse background in strategic consulting, change management, organizational development and leadership, investment banking and finance. During her career, she has worked for leading firms such as Bain & Company, Goldman Sachs, Accenture and Salomon Brothers Inc. She was also Chief Strategy Officer and a member of the executive team of two nationally-recognized companies, ChoicePoint Inc and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Most recently, prior to founding SuiteTrack, Erin was a Managing Director with Alvarez and Marsal, one of the country’s largest restructuring firms, where she drove business development and content delivery in the Southeast region.

Erin currently is currently the Chair of Girls on the Run of Atlanta and sits on the Boards of Trustees of The Atlanta Girls School, Homrich Berg Investment Advisors and the Harvard Business School Club of Atlanta. A former nationally ranked tennis player and scholarship athlete, Erin received her BA Magna Cum Laude in Economics and Spanish from Duke University and her MBA from Harvard.

Elizabeth A. Price, Esq., is the Professional Personnel Partner of Alston & Bird. From 1986 until 2008, she was a trial attorney at Alston & Bird. Liz served as trial, regional and national coordinating counsel in major national products liability matters.

Liz is a past president of the Atlanta Bar Association, was a member of the board of governors of the State Bar of Georgia and is on the executive committee of the Atlanta Bar Foundation. Liz is the current chair of the Southeast Region of the Anti-Defamation League and serves on ADL’s National Commission. She is on the board of the NALP Foundation, the Metropolitan Bar Caucus of the American Bar Association and the Trial Attorneys of America. Ginger Emas has been a freelance writer since 1987 when she left her editor’s job at IBM in Charlotte, N.C., to move to Atlanta. Speaker Biography

Dr. Edna Levy is the Brill Director of Jewish Education at the Lisa F. Brill Institute of Jewish Learning at the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta. Edna has been a teacher at the internationally acclaimed Melton Mini-School for 8 years, and teaches Melton classes at various locations around town, including the Temple, B’nai Torah, Temple Sinai and the Epstein School. She has also served as the Jewish educator at URJ Camp Coleman and Camp Barney Meditz at the MJCCA.

Edna holds a Ph.D in Political Science from the University of California-Irvine, and wrote her doctoral thesis “Gender and Militarism in Israeli Culture” Raised in Canada, Edna and her husband Jacob Schreiber have been wandering professional Jews, living in Rochester NY, Jerusalem and California before settling in Atlanta. They are the proud and busy parents of three Epstein-schooled children, Gavri, Maya and Simi.

Speaker Biography

Described as a “lawyer’s lawyer” and recognized by the American College of Trial Lawyers as one of the top trial attorneys in the nation, Roy E. Barnes knew from a young age what profession he wanted to pursue. His love of law and his commitment to serving others have never wavered.

A lifelong resident of Cobb County, Georgia, Roy Barnes received his undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia and graduated with honors from the Lumpkin School of Law at UGA in 1972. Upon graduation, he went to work as a prosecutor in the Cobb County District Attorney’s office, where he stayed until opening his first law firm in 1975.

For over 30 years, Barnes has tried civil and criminal cases throughout Georgia and in neighboring states including a successful class action lawsuit against Fleet Finance that received national recognition in the early 1990s. His practice has concentrated primarily on civil litigation, where he has developed an expertise in consumer class action cases, medical malpractice matters, products liability law, general tort matters and commercial litigation.

Barnes has appeared in more than 150 cases in the state and federal appellate courts. Barnes has been a public servant nearly as long as he has been a lawyer. At age 26, he was elected the youngest member of the Georgia State Senate. He went on to serve a total of eight terms and was a member of the Appropriations, Rules and Transportation committees. In addition, he was Chairman of the Select Committee on Constitutional Revision, which rewrote the state’s constitution as well as Chairman of the powerful Judiciary Committee. He also served as a floor leader to Governor Joe Frank Harris from 1983 to 1989. After an unsuccessful bid for the Governor’s Office in 1990, Barnes was elected to the State House of Representatives, where he served for six years and was Vice Chairman of the Judiciary Committee and Chair of the Subcommittee on General Law.

In 1998, Barnes was elected to serve as the 80th Governor of the State of Georgia. During his term, he concentrated on education reform, health care reform, and remedies for urban growth and sprawl. He created the Georgia Cancer Coalition and served as Chair of the Southern Regional Education Board, the Southern Governor’s Association, and the Education Commission of the States. He was defeated for reelection in large part because of his efforts to change the Georgia flag, a political decision for which he was honored with the 2003 John F. Kennedy Library Foundation Profiles in Courage Award.From the day he was elected governor, Roy Barnes knew he would return to the practice of law, which he has done through the establishment of The Barnes Law Group.

Beth Schapiro is president of The Schapiro Group, a data-driven strategic consulting firm serving private sector, public sector, membership organization, and nonprofit clients throughout the United States. The Schapiro Group serves clients in the areas of communications and workforce performance.

Known for her research prowess and strategic acumen, Beth is a nationally recognized expert on strategy and public affairs. With over 30 years of experience in the field, her work has influenced policy on a range of issues at the federal, state and local levels. She has also developed campaign strategy for successful candidates for all levels of office throughout the Southeast.

Beth has written on research and strategy and is called on for commentary by FOX, CNN, USA Today, The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Roll Call, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and Southern Political Report. She has also served as a trainer at strategy workshops conducted by the Yale Campaign School for Women, Southern Women in Public Service, Human Rights Campaign, League of Women Voters, and other organizations throughout the United States.

Beth is a member of the American Political Science Association. She holds a B.S. in Education from the University of Maryland, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science from Emory University. An active community volunteer, she is a graduate of both Leadership Atlanta and the Regional Leadership Institute, former president of the Cool Girls board and Women Business Owners of Atlanta, and a former board member of numerous nonprofit organizations.

Speaker Biography

Magistrate Judge Gerrilyn G. Brill was sworn in by the United States District Court, Northern District of Georgia, as a United States Magistrate Judge on January 20, 1995. She now serves as Chief Magistrate Judge for the Northern District of Georgia. From 1975 until 1978, she was employed in the private practice of law. From 1978 until the time of her appointment to the bench, Judge Brill served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Georgia. From March 1991, she served as First Assistant to the United States Attorney. She was appointed Interim United States Attorney in November 1993 and served in that position for three months.

Magistrate Judge Brill received her undergraduate degree in Economics in 1972 from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and she earned her Juris Doctorate degree in 1975 with distinction from Emory University School of Law. Magistrate Judge Brill has taught and presented papers at numerous conferences, workshops, and seminars, including those sponsored by the Federal Judicial Center. She served on the editorial board of the Federal Courts Law Review and is the author of "Instructing the Jury in an Employment Law Case" published in that journal at http://www.fclr.org./ Judge Brill currently serves on the Magistrate Judges Education Committee of the Federal Judicial Center.

We were in the Atlanta Jewish Times again. Suzi Brozman included a cute snippet in her "On the Town" feature about member Stacy Tenenbaum, who used to write wonderful food articles for the Jewish Times, and the JPWN cocktail party at Silk Restaurant in midtown. Peggy Parks is an international image consultant and founder of The Parks Image Group, Inc. in Atlanta, Georgia. Custom corporate workshops on professional business attire and etiquette, private one-on-one consulting that features a personal and individually crafted image plan and wardrobe planning and selection form the core services Peggy’s company provides.

Before launching her business in 2003, Peggy spent more than twenty years in international business working in human resources, financial planning and management roles with companies that included Sea-Land Service, Hitachi and ISFA Invest. A graduate of the London Image Institute and a member of the Association of Image Consultants International, Peggy currently serves on the executive board of the Association of Image Consultants International (AICI) Atlanta chapter. She is also an active member of the Atlanta Women’s Network (AWN), Atlanta Women in Business (AWB) and is a sponsor of the Georgia Association of Women Lawyers (GAWL).

Cathey Steinberg Luncheon Event Recap

We really enjoyed having Cathey as a speaker. She told us stories about Georgia politics we could not believe. Did you know that in 1981 a woman could not vote in Georgia unless her husband was a registered voter??? Unreal. She also talked about having integrity and being in politics. We are greatful for her coming to speak to us and also for her services in the Georgia Legislature. Our state and the state of our lives is better because of Cathey's actions on behalf of women (and others).

Over the past several months, we have been thinking of different ways to keep our web site updated. Our web site was hopelessy out-of-date, which caused a ton of confusion. Finally, after hearing our January speaker, Toby Bloomberg, discuss blogging and new media, we had a eureka moment and decided to set up a blog attached to our events page that we can update from work, home and even our cell phones.

Expect to see our posts to this blog on upcoming events. This way you can register early for events and keep track of any venue or date changes. We are also going to use the blog in place of our newsletters, but still keep all of our features like Person, Place or Thing and the Jewish Professional Featured Woman.

What do you have to do to receive our posts? Well, you can do nothing and just receive an email from us when we have something important to share, just like you receive emails from us now. Speaker Biography

Cathey W. Steinberg has served as an advocate on behalf of consumers and families for more than 25 years as Georgia’s first independent Consumers’ Insurance Advocate, a business owner of an advocacy training and strategic planning company, a state legislator, and as Executive Director of a non-profit serving troubled youth.

Steinberg served from July 1999 through March 2003 as Georgia’s first Consumers’ Insurance Advocate, whose primary responsibility was to protect and promote consumers’ interests on insurance matters. Based on her long-standing reputation as a consumer and family advocate, in July 1999, Governor Barnes appointed Steinberg to this important position as an independent voice for Georgians on insurance issues. During her tenure, this office became nationally recognized and Steinberg was appointed a Consumer Representative with the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

Steinberg previously spent a total of 14 years in the state legislature. She served in the House of Representatives from 1977 to 1989 and in the Senate from 1991 to 1993. In 1992, she ran for the United States Congress and won the Democratic nomination but lost the general election by less than a one-percentage point margin.

As a state legislator, Steinberg was involved in issues concerning families and health care as well as energy and the environment. She was instrumental in the passage of legislation regarding victims’ compensation, child support, family medical leave, and the State Commission on Family Violence. She served on the House Rules Committee and, in the Senate, chaired the Human Development Subcommittee of the Appropriations Committee and the Aging and Human Ecology Subcommittee of the Youth, Aging, and Human Ecology Committee. She also served on the Senate Judiciary and Ethics Committees.

Additional legislative achievements include a landmark law to regulate land use by requiring impact studies before re-zonings (the Steinberg Act), the Nursing Home Residents’ Bill of Rights, the Georgia Child Care Council, under-age drinking laws, and tax relief for senior citizens.

After her congressional race, she developed and was managing partner of Ahead of the Curve, a public policy consulting and advocacy training firm she founded. During her eight-year tenure, Steinberg worked with several advocacy groups on a wide range of issues such as teen pregnancy prevention and issues important to people with disabilities and their families, such as accessible housing, community-based services, and employment.

Steinberg has served on the advisory boards of the Atlanta Business Chronicle and the Atlanta Lung Association. She was a member of the Executive Committee of the United Way’s Community and Government Relations Division, the Council on Elder Abuse, and the Governor’s Statewide DUI Task Force and Leadership Atlanta. She is a current member of the Carter Center Board of Councilors and the International Women’s Forum.

Steinberg has received numerous awards, including a Legislator of the Year award from the Georgia Council on Aging, an honorary life membership in the Georgia Parent Teacher Association, and a Certificate of Appreciation for her legislative efforts against child abuse and drunk driving. In the June/July 2000 edition of Business to Business Magazine, Steinberg was identified as a “Diva”, one of Atlanta’s most dynamic women. Similarly, in 2001, Steinberg was recognized by the Atlanta Business Chronicle as one of Atlanta’s 100 most influential citizens and by Georgia Trend Magazine as one of the 100 Most Influential Georgians of the Year.

Steinberg received a bachelor’s degree from Carnegie-Mellon University and earned her master’s degree in guidance and counseling from the University of Pittsburgh.

From September 05 through September 07, Steinberg served as the Executive Director of the Juvenile Justice Fund, a non-profit dedicated to addressing the needs of troubled youth from the Fulton County Juvenile Court and other community resources. Focusing on difficult problems that most agencies do not address, such as sexual exploitation of children and serious family dysfunction, the Juvenile Justice Fund has a seven-year record of delivering innovative, effective interventions for youth and children who come to a juvenile court.

Steinberg is currently enjoying her family (3 grandchildren), and traveling. She is consulting and doing project work as needed.
