KIEV — Four young women naked from the waist up barged into a Ukrainian polling station on Sunday and held a rowdy protest just before a candidate in the country’s presidential election cast his ballot there.

The women, members of a small feminist group called Femen known for staging eye-catching protests, were hustled out of the Kiev polling station by security guards before Viktor Yanukovich showed up to vote, AFP journalists saw.

“Enough raping our democracy!” shouted the protesters, who held signs with slogans such as “Help! Rape!” and wore nothing except for jeans and strips of green electrical tape over their nipples.

The women told reporters they were protesting against “the end of democracy” in Ukraine and not specifically against Yanukovich or in favour of his rival, Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

They were detained and charged with violating the law on public protests, an administrative offence punishable with a fine, said Volodymyr Mayevski, chief of the security department of Ukraine’s interior ministry.

“Since the activists had not applied for permission for the protest and were interfering with the work of the election commission, they were detained and taken to a police station in the capital,” Mayevski said in a statement.

The protest came after a bitter election campaign in which many Ukrainians voiced frustration at both candidates, amid deep disillusionment with the country’s protracted political stalemate and economic crisis.

Femen, whose members are mostly university students, drew international attention last summer by holding a protest against Ukraine’s sex tourism trade where activists picketed in central Kiev wearing bras and panties.

A Sarnia man who bruised his spouse from head to toe during a cocaine-fueled evening that ended with the naked couple struggling on a neighbour’s lawn was sentenced to house arrest in Sarnia court.

The 40-year-old man had previously pled guilty to assault causing bodily harm Oct. 1, 2007, but was also convicted of forcible confinement following a Superior Court trial.

A publication ban imposed to protect the spouse’s identity prevents his identification.

The bruises on the woman’s face, legs, back and arms were so severe she couldn’t look at herself in a mirror, she told the court during a trial last November.

“He went ballistic on me,” she said.

At one point during the four-hour confrontation, she hit him with a beer bottle, which left a bleeding gash on his head.

“He suffered very serious injuries,” said defence lawyer David Stoesser, who argued the man was defending himself.

Justice John Desotti concluded the woman, who is about seven inches shorter and 25 pounds lighter than her husband, had too many bruises for him to claim self-defence.

The couple admitted using cocaine that evening. He also drank beer but testified neither substance affected his actions.

The confrontation took place in several rooms of their Sarnia home, including the kitchen, where the couple faced each other holding knives. At another point they were in a jacuzzi together.

The confrontation began after the husband exchanged intimate photos of themselves with another couple. The man from the other couple wanted to come to their home.

The woman had become involved in sexual activity with the other man when the couple previously visited the Sarnia pair.

She asked for a divorce, which he rejected, along with her suggestion of an open marriage in which they both could date other people.

He suggested bringing other couples into the relationship.

The relationship was very rocky in the fall of 2007 because she was involved with other men and incommunicative, the man said during the November trial.

The husband’s concern about her infidelity let to the confrontation, said Stoesser. It ended when she bolted naked from the home with her husband chasing her.

“I was frantic,” she said.

The neighbour testified he heard shouting and saw the couple, which he vaguely knew, on his front lawn. The man had pinned her to the ground.

He told the neighbour that everything was fine, but the neighbour called 911.

The woman got loose and darted into the house.

“She was shaking so bad she could hardly breathe,” the neighbour testified.

The husband realizes the relationship is now finished, said Stoesser.

In addition to house arrest, he was placed on a two-year probation term.

“It is time for you to move forward,” Desotti said.

Tampa, Florida — News of the arrest of a 6th grade geography teacher spread fast among the student body of Farnell Middle School.

Eighth grader Kathleen Newell says she found out on Facebook.

“It’s a surprise,” she said.

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 39-year-old Tammy Clinton at the school on Thursday, accusing her of not only forcing a 14-year-old student to touch her breasts and fondling his buttocks, but twice enticing him to leave the campus with her so they could commit a sexual act. The most recent attempt was the day of the arrest, deputies said. She bonded out of jail early Friday morning.

“They didn’t believe it because they said she was really friendly, that she was their favorite teacher,” Kathleen Newell said of her friends’ reaction to the arrest.

Her mom, Luisa Newell, chimed in, “That’s the thing, sometimes teachers can be so friendly. You just don’t know how far they can go.”

This is the 1st time I heard of Nick Snider.

Nick Snider, who Forbes magazine named the world’s fifth most successful male model in 2008, has been charged with three misdemeanors, including offering multiple law enforcement officials oral sex in exchange for release, The Smoking Gun reports.

The intoxicated 21-year-old was arrested on Monday morning for causing a disturbance at a friend’s house in Batesville, Arkansas. Snider, however, was having none of it.

According to an Independence County Sheriff’s Department report, Snider told the approaching officers “I am a very famous model.” Then as he was being driven to the county jail in a patrol car, he told one of the deputies “If you stop I’ll suck your dick and balls if you let me go.” Then Snider “also harassed the booking Jailer with similar sexual comments,” which got him an additional charge of attempting to illegally influence a public servant.

Turkish police have recovered the body of a 16-year-old girl they say was buried alive by relatives in an “honour” killing carried out as punishment for talking to boys.

The girl, who has been identified only by the initials MM, was found in a sitting position with her hands tied, in a two-metre hole dug under a chicken pen outside her home in Kahta, in the south-eastern province of Adiyaman.

Police made the discovery in December after a tip-off from an informant, the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet reported on its website.
