We are excited to announce that our hotel investment event portfolio has been acquired by Northstar Travel Group.

This acquisition was completed in collaboration with BHN’s partners, including the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA). BHN produces 10 hospitality investment events and conferences around the world, including Los Angeles, Miami, Hong Kong, Singapore, London and Mumbai. This partnership makes events the largest segment of Northstar’s multi-platform solutions and adds a new level of expertise and resources to BHN’s growing event portfolio.

Jim Burba commented, “Finding the right strategic and cultural partner that offered new capabilities over a range of areas – event management, digital media and database marketing, to name a few – was very important as we continue to scale our business and offer greater educational and marketing offerings to the global hotel investment community. I have known the leadership team of Northstar for many years including Tom Kemp, Alicia Evanko and Bob Sullivan and we are very excited to be working with Northstar.”

Jim Burba, founder and president, and Bob Hayes, VP of Burba Hotel Network, and their entire team will continue to run the BHN events working with Northstar Travel Group. Northstar, the leading information, event, marketing solutions and technology provider to the global travel and meetings industry will be able to leverage its databases, relationships, media properties and domain expertise to help grow the BHN event portfolio.

BHN’s global portfolio of events include: the Americas Lodging Investment Summit (ALIS) in Los Angeles; ALIS Law in Los Angeles; ALIS Summer Update; Alternative Ownership Conference Asia Pacific (AOCAP) in Singapore; Caribbean Hotel & Resort Investment Summit (CHRIS) in Miami; Hotel Investment Conference Asia Pacific (HICAP) in Hong Kong; HICAP UPDATE in Singapore; Hotel Investment Forum India (HIFI) in Mumbai; Hotel Opportunities Latin America (HOLA) conference in Miami; and Hotel Investment Conference Europe (Hot.E) in London. As part of this acquisition, Northstar and AHLA have entered into a long-term partnership agreement to co-produce the ALIS Group of Events in the US.

“We are thrilled to add the Burba hospitality events to our growing portfolio of global events serving the travel and hospitality industries,” said Tom Kemp, chairman and CEO of Northstar Travel Group. “We have known Jim Burba and Bob Hayes for many years and we believe that the combination of BHN and Northstar is a great strategic and cultural fit with our company. BHN has a substantial event portfolio and this will be the largest acquisition in Northstar’s history. With the addition of BHN, events now become the largest segment of Northstar’s multi-platform solutions serving the global travel industry.”

Houlihan Lokey represented BHN and its partners in the transaction. Paul Hastings LLP provided legal advice to BHN, Eckert Seamans Cherin & Mellott LLC provided legal advice to AHLA. Macquarie Capital provided financing for Northstar, and Jones Day served as legal advisor to Northstar.

Take a look at our Partners for Life interview for Palm Springs Life

In our interview with Greg Archer, we talk about some of the principles and thoughts that went into our new book Smart Partners. Do you need or do you want a partner? Do you know the difference? How do you pick the perfect partner, and what is the key ingredient in a successful and thriving partnership? Here are some answers.

You’ve been in relationship for 25 years. What are one or two things that have made your personal relationship unique?

Jim Burba: I think it is the openness and willingness of each of us to grow and adapt to various situations. Things change in relationships, and many times a partnership doesn’t survive the change. Bob and I talk all of the time about what is working and what isn’t so that we can make adjustments and keep the business and our marriage strong and going in the right direction.

Picking the perfect partner, which you address, is a grand topic. Can you share more about this?

Bob Hayes: Picking a partner, whether it is in business or in life, is about finding someone who shares common beliefs, attitudes, interests, goals, and life philosophy. That means you have to get to know someone before you can commit to really partnering with them. And you have to have a really good sense of who you are, too. You need to really know yourself first before you can expect someone else to get to know you.

Thank you Business Info Guide for the profile of our book Smart Partners.

What is your book about?

Smart Partners outlines the methods and thinking we’ve used to achieve financial success while also keeping our personal partnership alive and interesting. Drawing on our unique experiences both personally and professionally, we present principles for building, sustaining, and growing not merely serviceable relationships in business and life, but true partnerships.

What inspired you to write your book?

Most people want partners in their personal lives, and many businesses start with some form of partnership structure. Yet so many personal and professional partnerships disintegrate, sometimes quickly. That’s one reason why our own partnership seems so amazing, even miraculous, to people who know us. “How do you do it?” they constantly ask. “How have you spent so many years living and working together 24/7 without killing each other?” We began to think about how we have managed to stay together so long, and then we started writing our thoughts down on paper.

How did you come to do what you’re doing today?

Our company, Burba Hotel Network, has been producing conferences for the hotel investment industry for more than 16 years. Jim has been working in hospitality for his entire 30+ year career. He was also helping UCLA organize real estate conferences through their extension program. At some point, we decided to form a company that produced events that would be set up to give back to the hotel industry. And that’s what we did. Our events have contributed more than USD$15 million to humanitarian causes and education programs, research, and scholarships for hospitality students. We like giving back to the communities in which we live and work.

Can you describe a typical day in your life?

We don’t have a really typical day. Since we produce ten annual events around the world, there is always someone coming or going to places such as London, Singapore, or Mumbai. When we are working on events at home in the U.S., a typical day involves recruiting speakers, sponsors, and delegates for our conferences and working out venue logistics.

After the telecast, we were invited to attend the Governors Ball, held in the Los Angeles Convention Center. Thousands attended the very glitzy and glamorous dinner. It was fun watching the Award winners carry their Emmys to the back of the room to have them engraved.

To kick things off we contributed some stories to Success Magazine about the key to a successful partnership. Take a look at our first story.

We should know what it takes to create and maintain a successful partnership in business and in life. We have been life partners for over 26 years and business partners for more than 16 years.

What do we think is key? Well, the first step is knowing who you are, what you like and don’t like, and what you can and can’t do. As we say, we always starts with me. When people ask how we’ve managed to stay together as partners in business and in life for so long without killing each other, we jokingly reply that martinis help (and they absolutely do!). But a more serious answer is that we learned who we were early on, accepted who we are, and made the most of it.

The first review of our book Smart Partners is in from Publishers Weekly.

About Smart Partners, Publishers Weekly writes, “This chatty, friendly how-to guide is a cheerful read for budding entrepreneurs looking for inspiration,” and “Using stories from their own work, they discuss the importance of attaining self-knowledge and self-understanding, how to choose a partner carefully, building a romantic relationship, treating people with kindness, building strong communication and negotiation skills, and always relying—first and foremost—on a strong sense of integrity.”

We wrote Smart Partners in response to the many questions we receive about “how do you guys live and work together 24/7 and not kill each other?” Our book talks about how we make our business and personal partnership work. We hope to inspire people with our story of how success can be achieved through the use of our “partnership principles.”

Smart Partners is available for pre-orders now on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
