On YouTube, there’s a video of a guy playing “Let It Be” by the Beatles on piano. He’s got like 12,000 views on it. It’s not bad, but it’s not even in the right key! So, I posted a comment to that effect, and someone wrote back that I was being nitpicky (??) and that not many people can sing in the range of the original key. So, I had to back up my statement with a video performance of me playing and singing the song in the original key. It’s on guitar because it was the most handy at the time. Anyone that knows me will know that I admire Brian Wilson’s songwriting the most. His song, “Girl Don’t Tell Me” is truly one of his finest works. Plus, his brother Carl sings an amazing lead vocal that I can only hope to emulate in my version. I think my Laptop Session version of this song actually sounds a lot like the original because it was done with acoustics. “But,” you say, “many songs are done with just acoustics!” Well, Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys really used piano as their driving instrument, plus Al Jardine and Carl Wilson took the rhythm and lead guitars (respectively) on electrics almost all the time. Of course, I’m talking about the early records when the Boys recorded the instruments themselves. After a while, Brian and the others decided to have studio musicians come in, which allowed Brian to experiment more while the others were on tour. But, enough of the Beach Boys history for the time being. This song is really a favorite of mine and I know a certain group of people are going to go, “Oh, wow!” when they see I did a version of this forgotten song! Talk about obscure- here’s a song from the Beach Boys “Wild Honey” album. It’s called “Country Air”. I love the Boys’ harmonies on this song, but this take kinda gives it that down-home “country” feel to it. I’ve always loved the dark sounding piano they used in this song, but, of course, I’ll take it on guitar. If I had a better sounding keyboard, I’d use that. For all these videos so far, I’ve used my classical-stringed guitar that I bought in Sicily. I don’t know why, but it’s fun to play. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this song, and maybe next one will be a little more “known”. But, if you have ANY Beatles, Beach Boys, Moody Blues, or Byrds songs you’d like me to do, I DEFINITELY will! Here's a neat one because of the collaborative effort on the original. This song, Wishing You Were Here, written by the great Peter Cetera, is one of my favorite Chicago songs. I love many of their other songs as well, and you'll be hearing them in the coming weeks! But, this one has to be one of Cetera's best. I mean, he got bandmate James Panko (I believe) to sing lead on the verses with a real raspy voice, then the Beach Boys (well, Carl Wilson, Al Jardine, and Dennis Wilson, anyway) come in with the rest of Chicago and sing those great harmonies on the "Wishing You Were Here" part. Plus, Cetera even sings a great lead on the middle 8! I've been playing this song since I learned to play a G minor chord, and thanks to my brother for buying me a Chicago music book! It's definitely come in handy... Anyway, this is definitely one of those "check it off the list" songs for me, because I've always wanted to pay homage to this tune. I saw a YouTube video of him playing this on Letterman in 1988, and hearing the overproduced "80s" sound made me want to give it the Laptop Sessions treatment, as I did with Brian's song "I'm So Lonely" (from the Beach Boys 1985 album). No, this isn't one of Brian's greatest songs, but I think a lot of people write it off because its production, and not necessarily because of the quality of the song. This one's going out to Peter (aka thebeachboys here on YouTube). This is one of my favorites and I thought no one else really ever paid any attention to it. "Somewhere Near Japan", written by Mike Love and Terry Melcher, is one of the only saving graces on the 1988 EP/album "Still Cruisin". Carl Wilson, Al Jardine, Mike Love, and Bruce Johnston are all featured on lead at some point in the song (ala "Add Some Music") and I think that always added to my enjoyment of the song. This is one of those "let's hear how it sounds stripped-down" versions. The late-80s production might have turned some people off to this tune, but I think it stands up great on it own! Check http://fusco-moore.com for more details! Anyway, this song, “Never Comes the Day”, is a Moody Blues tune from “On the Threshold of a Dream” that I absolutely love. Plus, it works great with two people. Justin Hayward (who wrote this song) has a great way of writing a nice, slow song…then busting out to a faster section of the song. Despite the fact that “Threshold” is one of my favorite Moodies albums, this tune always stood out to me because of the way Hayward sings the line, “If only you knew what’s inside of me now…” I hope you enjoy my first duet here on the Laptop Sessions! Chris Moore and I did this version of the classic Beatles tune “And I Love Her”. I think having two people perform the song (even though there’s only one vocal) really helps because it allowed me to play the solo and the little guitar riff at the beginning and end. I love this tune, it’s fun to sing, and really shows how great the Beatles were, even at the beginning of their popularity. Kennedy. This video is fulfilling a request I received in my first week of doing the Laptop Sessions. I waited until now because I knew I had to get this one right. I had to practice the chords (not too easy, and this is my own interpretation- I didn’t even use a book), plus get the intricate tune correct. There’s so many subtleties to this tune and NO ONE was writing pop music like this in 1963. Talk about ahead of their time. I hope you enjoy this and stay for MANY more to come. I wrote this song at least five or six years ago, probably more. I could never play it right on the piano, so when I learned guitar, I switched the main instrument. By the way, did you notice we now have www.laptopsessions.com? Give it a look! "Marie" has always been one of my favorite Chris Moore songs. You can hear Chris' recorded versions of this tune on his website at http://chris-moore.com. Every time we play this in concert (which has been MANY times), I always look forward to it. Of course, this version is without the dueling harmonica and guitar solos, but I think the song stands up on its own (the mantra of the Laptop Sessions). Chris always thought of this song as an experiment for him because he had never really written a love song before quite like this. Truly, when he wrote it, he didn't even have any real inspiration. But, Chris is a professional writer and this song shows that he didn't need a real "Marie" to show he could feel this way. In concert I've previously done a very slow version of this song. But for the Laptop Sessions version, I wanted to keep it true to the original- the one I heard in the background on Chris' car CD player that really started it all. I originally got into the band after hearing their song “Brian Wilson” (see my band’s YouTube videos: Masters of the Universe http://youtube.com/watch?v=u0rBfLk70vU) I have every album from BNL, know every word to every song–a real fanatic. I think Steven Page is the best song writer of my generation, even though he is about 15 years older than me. This song starts off their album “Maroon”, one of my favorites from them that I played about 100 times in a row. This song is much more “electric” on the album, but I think it stands up well as an acoustic because of the lyrical content. I've always loved the way the Beach Boys did this tune, so I'm doing it in the key they sang it in. Like I've mentioned before, Christmas music just makes me excited about this time of year, and this tune always kind of sets that mood for me. It's an interesting song because there's really no pattern. It's just like one long musical sentence. That makes it pretty difficult to play, but now that I've got the hang of it, I'll be able to play it every year. It's been a while, but now that the planning is finally done for our annual Christmas/New Year's party, I'll be back doing more sessions more often! So, today, I'm actually putting four new videos online, as these were salvaged from my last laptop's hard drive before it died. Props to me, though, because I uploaded these to my web space before the hard drive crashed! :-) This song is a famous one from Chris Moore's favorite artist, Bob Dylan. If you listen to Dylan's Greatest Hits/Best Of compilations, you'll notice that this song stands out from the rest because of, dare I say it, his good voice! For the album "Nashville Skyline" (one of my favorites), he decided to try a new style of singing and playing. Chris and I put a new spin on this song with a guitar solo, and I hope everyone likes what we've done with it, especially because it took about 34 takes! The hard drive just crashed out of nowhere with no chance to recover my files. So, I got a new (bigger) hard drive and I hope everything will run smoothly from now on. This song goes out as a request. “The Lonely Sea” by the Beach Boys is a great early tune that doesn’t get much credit because it wasn’t a single. But, Beach Boys fans know (and love) this song. I think it’s a good one to do solo because even though the Boys had background “oohs”, this was a Brian Wilson song through and through. A great chord progression goes along with this song- simple, but powerful. I hope everyone’s been enjoying the Laptop Sessions and will continue to tune in every day for more! MoU did a great version in concert last year, so we wanted to reprise that with this live acoustic version in Fusco-Moore Studios. A somber Laptop Session today, as I pay tribute to Dan Fogelberg, who wrote one of the best songs of all time in “Same Old Lang Syne”. No matter what generation you’re from, I’m sure you can relate to this song. Meeting up with someone from your past that evokes such strong memories is one of those experiences that just seems like part of life. Of course, Dan wrote many other great songs, but his passing makes the song even more poignant now. The one funny thing is that I was planning on doing this video the day BEFORE he died anyway because it’s always been one of my favorite Christmas-time songs. Instead, I make it a tribute. This song, originally made famous by the supergroup Band-Aid, has been a favorite of mine since I was little. I got 4/5 of MoU together and we did this tune in Fusco-Moore Studios a couple days ago. We had a lot of fun with it- a bit too much fun, considering the subject matter of the song. Please note that we don’t take the subject of starvation in third-world countries lightly- we just had a lot of fun getting together and singing Christmas songs! Gene Clark, the writer of this song, wrote MANY great songs over his career, and you’ll be hearing a lot of them on the Laptop Sessions in the months to come. But, this song is just PERFECT to me, and here’s why: It’s got everything I love in a song. It’s got a great guitar sound (courtesy of Roger (Jim) McGuinn), a cool riff, great words, chorus harmonies, and a killer jangly guitar solo. I love everything about this tune and hopefully I’ve done this song justice. I’ll be the first to admit that most of the Moodies songs aren’t exactly “rockers”, but when they do come out with one, it’s AWESOME. “Story In Your Eyes”, “Ride My Seesaw”, and “I’m Just A Singer in a Rock’n'Roll Band” come to mind. This tune, “It’s Up To You”, has a great riff, classic Justin Hayward introspective lyrics, and just a great melody. Of course, this is an acoustic version with help from Chris Moore, but I think we get the point across pretty nicely! Ah, modesty… Anyway- hope you enjoy it! Tonight, I give you one of the Beach Boys’ greatest and most famous songs, “Surfer Girl”! Of course, the Boys’ version has those great harmonies, but imagine this version as if Brian Wilson was the only one singing. Plus, it’s fun to sing the harmony parts while listening back to it. I love the chords- those old-fashioned chords that rock music just doesn’t have anymore. It was fun to learn and Chris and I have been playing this for months. Actually, I love playing this on Chris’ Fender electric, but I think it translates well on the nylon strings. Today, I'm doing one of my songs from an album I made back in late 2003 called "That's All...". I couldn't stop listening to this song (yes, I listen to my own music quite a bit- I think I should be making music I actually like listening to!) so I decided to make it my first non-Christmas original here on the Laptop Sessions. I like the way the verse isn't very "standard". I don't exactly know what prompted my creation of it, but it's always stuck out as both unique and meaningful. Problem is that I don't really remember the meaning, either! Actually, I can take a pretty educated guess: Basically, the song says, "I gave you everything. You could've had anything. But when I ask for a little something in return, you tell me I'm greedy and hold it against me." I must've felt this way, as most people do in a relationship at one time or another.
