I’m sure we’ve all heard this one before: “take back that thing you said earlier, then I’ll give you what you want.” It’s easy to accept such a peace offering when you do regret that thing you said earlier. But what if you don’t? What if, despite everything, you still stand by those words? Do you tell the other person exactly what they want to hear, just to get that thing you want?

I vowed I would never do that again, after I picked up Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People. I never made through to the end of book, since every word of it made me cringe. Horrible! I do think the author is spot on in his assertion that more people will appear to like you if you consistently tell everybody what they want to hear. I also believe that such insincere manipulation of others is very, very wrong. In my view, you don’t win friends… you have to earn them. I choose to earn my friendships without resorting to manipulation.

Of course, the downside is that some times I do not get what I want, because I will not take back that thing I said earlier. I think that’s a small price to pay.

I’ve always wondered what would come first: music or the girlfriend. Since the latter has long been absent from my life, it was impossible to know. Now that I have a girlfriend, however, there is no doubt about it: music doesn’t even come close! Crazy as I am about making music, I’m just that much crazier for my girlfriend. She adds stuff to my life that music simply can’t touch. Of course, I wouldn’t be complete without either of them…

If you decide what you want (instead of letting someone else decide for you) perhaps you could choose the things that would actually bring you and your loved ones the satisfaction you can live with.

Since I ditched cable TV and most other forms of push advertising a couple of years ago, I’ve become pretty adept at deciding what I want all by myself. I do still buy into the occasional hype, but I’m usually fully aware and perfectly happy with buying into that particular hype. You?

If you’re a musician, focus on music.

My song Good Night Mary has been nominated for Best Lyric in the 2009 Just Plain Folks Awards!
