The club offers a drag hunt, which means then foxhounds follow a scented trait. There are no rifles, no foxes involved in the hunt. But the beauty of tradition still dictates this wonderful day out. If you get a chance you should go spectate.

A portrait of Canadian painter Rebecca Brewer, in her studio in...

A portrait of Canadian painter Rebecca Brewer, in her studio in Vancouver. Never became famous but music was always his heart and soul. When he was young he was in the army back in the UK. And during a protest march a young woman said to him, “You’re on the wrong side of history.” Then the protestors put up a banner with a symbol he didn’t recognize. It would become famous as the symbol for peace.

I photographed Kevin Head, manager of Kroma Artist’s Acrylics...

I photographed Kevin Head, manager of Kroma Artist’s Acrylics for the Globe and Mail in December. This is the greatest gift that photojournalism has given me and I’m so grateful that Jessica Dawson shared her time with me.

I photographed Jessica for a story by USA Today about the stigma surrounding mental health titled The Cost of Not Caring. Jessica was diagnosed with schizophrenia at age 22, but her parents and doctor hid this from her for four years. She recently participated in Stand Up For Mental Health, a program that teaches people with mental illness to speak out though comedy.

It was a tough assignment. She was extremely nervous about this, and so was I. But as soon as both admitted this, I felt that finally the defensive guards were dropped and we enjoyed a great conversation about our lives as kids and tv shows we watched.

Thanks Jessica and I hope to see you on stage one day.

A great friend of mine, Marcus, and I decided to meet in New Orleans this past month. He had a conference in Houston and I, well I have cheap flights from NYC available to me. But it was far far away from Bourbon Street, in a light industrial area bar, and near closing time when I found this scene. A quick snap, and then back to catching up with my good friend.

Work USA.

Work USA.

They call him Numbers. Steve Daniel is responsible for keeping...

They call him Numbers. Steve Daniel is responsible for keeping track and verifying statistics for the CFL, photographed in his home for Maclean’s Magazine.

One of the outs from an assignment for the Globe about the Ride...

One of the outs from an assignment for the Globe about the Ride To Conquer Cancer in Vancouver, BC. But then, with hit after hit, the jokes and smear campaigns came out. And I now regretfully admit, I took part in the jokes.

January 21, 2012 - While listening to Jermaine Jackson being interviewed and speaking about his brother Michael, I felt like an ass. To have someone in the same room as you describe how hurtful the allegations and jokes were, really hit me hard.

The Shoot: Jermaine was incredibly soft-spoken and almost seemed shy and timid upon meeting me. But as soon as the video camera started rolling, or when he heard the click of the shutter, his smile beamed and he opened right up.

The Technical Stuff: The one light used was a Interfit Super Cool Lite 655 2-Light Kit (1320 watts of constant lighting) since that was what I used for the video portion of the gig (yes, video). The photos with the mirror and outside were with ambient light. The camera was a Nikon D3S.

This story is about a town that knew it was dying. Their school was about to be shut down because of low enrollment. They’ve seen it happen to other small Alberta towns like theirs - Lose the School and the town is lost.

So with the help of funding from RADF, they started an elite hockey school for girls. This increased the enrollment they needed by adding 30 high-school aged girls to their town school.

But it took the whole town to work together to make it happen. Families opend their homes (before a residence was built) to billet the new girls. 80-year-old grandmothers helped paint the new residence, small businesses donated furniture, everyone chipped in.

All of a sudden, the town had a future again. Families could have a future together in their beloved town. The Doenz family, who worked the same farm land for over 100-years could stay together in Warner. They had a son who had married a school teacher. Because of the school staying open she was able to work in Warner.

An ex-NHL player was given a chance to share his love of the game.

A senior towns-person was given a meaningful job as the den-mother.

And young Canadian girls had a chance to pursue their dreams as hockey players and make life-long friends and a connection to a small Alberta town.

So, I’ve been picking up a few architectural and developers as clients lately. Tip - if you want to get great landscapes or photos of structures, say goodnight to having a regular sleeping schedule. And don’t try to take on these assignments during Solstice especially in places like Edmonton when the sun rises at 5am and sets at 10:21 pm.

Coyote Hunters of Alberta

Just wanted to share a photo from an ongoing project on coyote and wolf hunters in Alberta, Canada.

Salman Rushdie is neither tall nor short. He is not rude nor over polite. My time with him was short, but enough. We talked about great places to eat (he suggested a great Indian place in the Flatiron district) and why my male friends wanted me to ask him about the women in his life. We talked about writers we admired and how great ones will always keep publishing relevant works. And we took some photos in between while we walked the streets.

My friends always inquire what someone is like. Was she an inspiration to be around? Was he an asshole like in TV? We all get that gut feeling and the first impression. But it’s hard to judge someone in such a short period of time. The snapshot I take might last 1/250th of a second. But after, if the photo is interesting enough we can dissect and examine it for however long we want. Our impressions of a person might then be confirmed or denied. But I wonder if this is fair? Which is why as a photographer you need to be honest with your viewers.

The Technical Stuff: I used a Nikon D3S and a Nikon D700 for this shoot. The D3S had a 14-24mm lens and the D700 with a 50 1.4 lens. All shot with available light. When shooting available light I’ll try to find contrasty scenes so that the shadows can play another part in the composition. The 50 1.4 lens is great for blowing out (out of focus) the backgrounds while the 14-24mm lens allows for much more detail and wider compositions.

Thanks again for reading.
