At a recent corporate event held at the seaside, I conducted a juggling workshop for the directors, managers and staff of a multinational corporation. At this retreat, they were treated to a range of beach activities, including juggling.

Everyone certainly got "sun-kissed" while juggling on the sand! Here are some photos of the beautiful beach.

Fire and its hold on us

Fire intrigues many. You see it in people's eyes and facial expressions as they gaze at the flames of a brightly burning fire.

As a juggler who performs with fire, I am similarly intrigued by fire.

Perhaps fire fascinates people because it is a natural element; people are also fascinated by moving water such as waterfalls and fountains.

Perhaps there is something primal about fire. Perhaps there is something that resonates deep within us when we are in the presence of fire; after all, fire was what our "human ancestors" used for heating, lighting, and cooking at least 400,000 years ago.

Hearts stay warm as it rains

It's been raining at the nighttime Singapore River Market (outside the Central mall) where I've been juggling over the weekends. When it rains, the stall owners have to close their tent stalls to keep their wares dry. That doesn't stop people from coming though.

Good thing about this outdoor riverside market is that there is a heart-shaped decorative piece located nearby in the sheltered atrium of the Central mall. No matter what the weather is, people and their friends or lovers gravitate towards this decoration for photos.

Night Juggling by the Singapore River

There's an outdoor bazaar going on now on the bank of the Singapore River.

The Central Singapore River Market is located just outside the Central mall and is open in the evenings on 3 weekends in March 2012 (on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays only). This year's bazaar opened yesterday, 9th March, and ends on 25th March.

I'll be performing there on 8 of the 9 evenings from 7pm - 8pm.

Grabbing the attention of Venture Investors at Demo Asia

At Demo Asia 2012, the situation in the Matrix auditorium could be called, as one backstage crew described it, "Startup's Got Traction" (a witty spin on the title of the show America's Got Talent).

I was there to juggle! Here's a photo I took when I was waiting backstage before my turn.

Demo Asia on 1 March 2012 saw startup companies get onstage to showcase their emerging technologies and pitch their innovative ideas in 6 minutes in front of a judges' panel and an audience comprising investors, business executives and technology professionals.

Needless to say, all these companies were competing for their attention!

So there I was, to juggle on cue and bring to life a key benefit of a new and innovative technology product for videoconferencing, and also to catch the attention of the judges and audience. May the startup company I did the juggling for achieve their goals for demonstrating their innovation at Demo Asia 2012!

The Science of Fire Safety

The news article shown below caught my eye this morning, especially since I perform with fire. The article reports a revolutionary way to extinguish fires with "a hand-held electrode, or wand".

As a performing juggler, I juggle, manipulate, and occasionally "breathe" fire. I began performing with fire since 1999 and I understand the risks involved. Working and performing with fire is a serious piece of business. So it is fitting for me to remind readers to pay heed to both the well-worn cliche, "Do not try this at home" (or anywhere for that matter) and the other oft-heard warning, "Don't play with fire".

The article explains how scientists understand that fire puts people "at risk" and so have been researching how to extinguish fires more efficiently. Their research in an Instant Fire Suppression programme culminated in a working prototype hand-held wand to extinguish small gas fires. The wand demonstrates a new technology: the application of electromagnetic and acoustic waves to put out the flames. It was named by TIME Magazine as one of the 50 best inventions of 2011.

This research is fascinating because it shows that there might be (in the future) a much neater way of putting out fires without the use of fire extinguishers or fire hydrants or other conventional methods of extinguishing fires.

Pop Superstar plays the Diabolo

I came across a fan video of Jay Chou playing the diabolo during a pop concert. Jay Chou is a pop superstar from Taiwan with a large following in Asia. Here's the video clip on YouTube:

However, I have yet to come across a music celebrity who has done toss juggling (tossing and catching of at least three objects using the hands alone) onstage during a concert. Should you, dear readers of this blog, have come across that, I would be delighted to hear from you about it.

Changing lives in war-torn Afghanistan

This article about the Afghan Mobile Mini Circus for Children was printed in The Straits Times on 26 January 2012. This non-profit organisation "helps children develop their creativity and confidence through the performing arts" such as "juggling, unicycling and stilt walking, as well as singing, dancing, puppetry and skits with educational content". Additionally the children are equipped with "practical skills to navigate life" in war-torn Afghanistan.

In 2002, after the oppressive Taleban regime had fallen, the founders of the circus had set out to "bring (back) laughter to the children in Afghanistan". Prior to its fall, the Taleban regime had "banned music, singing and other forms of artistic expression in Afghanistan for decades".

Juggled at Grand Opening of Restaurant

This newly launched art gallery and restaurant looks like it will take both art-lovers and restaurant-goers to higher planes of enjoyment. When I was there to juggle at the grand opening of the establishment, I saw its rooms filled with artworks for the enjoyment of diners. Surely dining there would be a sensorial delight!

Outdoor Juggling at Wave House

Wow, what a party! This company beach party at Wave House on Siloso Beach had 2,500 people in attendance.

There were lots of things happening both onstage and offstage. My part was to perform with Light-effects and Fire amongst the guests who seem to have come from many different countries.

A couple of nights ago I performed at Movida where the club was reserved for a corporate party. At the party, I juggled and manipulated eye-catching and stunning light patterns in space while the party-goers mingled and unwound after their workday.

Proprioception is the key

Someone asked me a very interesting question today, when I was conducting a juggling workshop.

The question had to do with why a juggler keeps looking up while juggling many objects (such as balls or clubs). The objects being juggled move up and down in the air, but the juggler maintains his visual focus upwards.

The answer, which would surprise most people, is: proprioception.

I have actually gone a step further - Juggling Blind (absolutely no looking). In the following video, I used a bucket that is opaque. This is a real feat that is achieved through practice and it is not an "illusion". Watch the video here:

Angelina Jolie knows how to throw a Children's Party

Angelina Jolie sure knows how to keep her children happy with a garden party! One of Hollywood's biggest movie stars, Angelina Jolie has six children and they are currently residing in London while daddy Brad Pitt is on set filming a movie just outside of the city.

So what happened at the party?

As reported by Us Weekly : "All of the kids were in the garden to play and she surprised them with a local group of children's entertainers," a source tells Us Weekly of the sunny day. "Think juggling, game organising, races, that type of thing."

It's all up in the air

As I lay on the ground this afternoon doing post-run stretches of the glutes, I noticed the sky. Wow, I thought, what a clear blue sky we have.

This photo was taken as I lay on the outdoor wood deck of the Community Club in my neighbourhood. It's quite a nice spot on which to do floor stretching exercises.

I bought a new pair of shoes for performing in. This is the Nike Zoom Alpha Trainer shown in the photos below. I hope this type of trainers continues to be made and sold; I am very particular about the features of the footwear I use. Previously I used this pair of shoes. This new pair fits a lot better.

Singapore celebrated her 46th year of independence on 9th August 2011. The main National Day celebration (the National Day Parade 2011) was held on The Float @ Marina Bay. At that venue, spectators watched the parade while enjoying a visual treat in the form of the spectacular Singapore skyline along the Marina Bay.

On this same significant date were other events and parties to observe the occasion. I was at one such celebratory event held at Clifford Square, which is also located by the Marina Bay. At this event, I put on a stage show for an audience comprised of employees and their families.

Clifford Square is right next to the historic Clifford Pier that is a key feature in the story of how Singapore came to be. Find out more about Clifford Square through the photo below. (Click on image for source.)

Waiting in the wings

Here's a shot I took while waiting for my turn on stage at a dinner function earlier this evening.

It's always a good thing to arrive early and get ready ahead of time. It's also a good thing to improvise when the situation calls for it. For example, this venue had a low ceiling with several glitter balls hung directly over centre-stage which meant making some adaptation to the show.

The Kite Festival Singapore 2011 has kicked off. This year, kite flying events and activities take place at several venues around Singapore.

From 29th to 31st July 2011, I will be juggling at the festival while kite flying experts demonstrate their kite flying skills at the Indoor Flying Fiesta held at the ION Orchard shopping mall.

Previously, at the inaugural Kite Festival Singapore in 2009, I had conducted juggling workshops for festival goers.

Here's a lovely book to read to your young children (photos below). This book has a delightful concept, great artwork and a pleasing layout.

While you're reading it to them, perhaps you could remind them how special you are. Oh yes, it helps if you can juggle too!
