Wins During The Pandemic

I was, like many people, affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. During the pandemic, the whole world seemed to slow down during the years 2020 and 2021. The movement of people was restricted by various degrees throughout that period.

Wins during the pandemic.

Throughout the pandemic, I stayed sharp as a Performing Juggler while nationwide restrictions were imposed for health and safety in Singapore. From 2020 to 2022, I won prizes in TikTok video challenges organised by the following companies. I performed Juggling Acts in those TikTok videos.

It was only in the second quarter of 2022 that Singapore began to remove nationwide restrictions on the movement of people.

TikTok Challenge Accepted

I participated in a TikTok video contest in October 2021. Did I win anything? Yes, I won a Virgin Active gym club membership.

I won with my Juggling performance in the TikTok video contest. It's a very nice prize! I'm thankful for it during this period – there's a pandemic going on that's affected many people's livelihoods including mine. I reckon that a one-year Virgin Active membership is around SGD2,500.00.

So what did I do in order to win? A few things were required. The main thing that I did was to Juggle While Doing A Pistol Squat. A pistol squat is a particular type of exercise.

Juggling Show Rehearsal

This video is a recording of one of my rehearsals in July 2021. I rehearsed one of my juggling acts.

My outdoor rehearsal is useful for me. For one thing, there's more space outside. I also need to be able to focus on my performance while other things are going on around me. Moreover, it's warm and humid in Singapore — it's a tropical country — which means that I get to build up my "heat endurance". This is helpful because during my actual show, it can get quite warm under my hat and costume.

My TikTok video won a prize

In May 2021, I took part in a McDonald's TikTok challenge.

I won these vouchers!!

In this video, I show you all the details, including my TikTok video entry. The last day of the challenge was 13th May 2021.

In the McDonald's TikTok video challenge, participants had to record a video of themselves doing a "duet" with the original McDonald's TikTok video. In the TikTok app, there is a special feature that allows users to "duet" with other users. This Video Duet is done within the TikTok platform.

In my video entry, I juggled 5 balls and did a power finish – I caught 4 balls in my hands and caught the last ball with my foot.

I won a prize in the contest! The prize is SGD 200.00 worth of McDonald's gift certificates. I'm delighted that my video won me a prize. It took some effort and it was worth it. Yes, it goes without saying that "I'm lovin' it"!

Fire Juggler Video

In current times, we hardly see Fire Juggling taking place in any public space. However, we can always watch it online. Here's a video of me as a Fire Juggler.

Shall we dance? With fire?

The video below shows my rehearsal as a Fire Juggler. During my rehearsal, I ran through several Fire Juggling sequences. My final routine for the show can be seen in the later part of the video.

Notice how the wind blows the flames during my rehearsal. This is why Fire Jugglers have to keep the fire torches at a safe distance from their hair.

Those were the days! Back then, Fire Juggling could quite readily be performed at various venues. Nowadays, the authorities are very strict with respect to fire safety rules and regulations. This is mostly why I would like this video of me as a Fire Juggler to be archived here, on YouTube. I hope that you'll find something interesting in my video.

Juggling is sometimes associated with Multitasking. To multitask is to perform more than one task at the same time. For example, talking on the phone while pouring a drink.

The challenge is to maintain one's focus on either task. So what does that look like?

Juggling Classes for Everyone

People of all ages have taken my Juggling Lessons over the years. This isn't surprising because the benefits of juggling — improved hand-eye coordination, improved reflexes, it's wholesome fun, and so on — are there for everyone to reap.

What's surprising might be the reasons people have for wanting to learn to Juggle. Read the list of 14 reasons that I've compiled below.

Why Learn to Juggle?

Here are some reasons that my students have shared with me. I've paraphrased them for ease of reading:

My pupils need to understand, through Juggling, what it means to persevere.
My child needs to improve his/her concentration.
My child needs to improve throwing and catching skills for his/her sport.
My child needs to improve his/her reflexes and spatial awareness.
I want to demonstrate to my team at work that if I can learn something new, so can they.
I want to challenge myself and learn something that seems impossible to do.
My boss at work suggested that I stretch myself to think out-of-the-box by learning to juggle.
I need a fun and stimulating activity as an ice-breaker during my work seminar.
I've always wanted to learn to juggle since young but never had the opportunity to accomplish it.
I want to learn to juggle because I had read about juggling and how it's good for the brain.
I'm going to act in a play and my character needs to juggle.
We want to inspire our colleagues in our company that we can achieve the impossible if we commit to it – and juggling looks like a fun way to demonstrate this.
I'm getting older and I want to tune up my reflexes.
Learning to juggle is on my bucket list.

Fire Show

When the time is right, my Fire Show is suitable for a private party such as a Garden Party or Poolside Party. It's certainly doable during a festive celebration on a lawn. It's worth noting that Safe Distancing rules (implemented during the Covid-19 pandemic) will also enhance the fire safety measures that are taken during my performance.

Keep Your Eye on the Ball

I've written previously about why, when you juggle, you don't need to look at your hands while Juggling.

It's nice to be able to do that kind of thing even in daily life - for example, tossing your bunch of house keys up and catching it.

Try it? Stand up and hold a small bunch of keys in one hand. Tilt your head (chin up) and look upwards. Keep your head tilted up throughout.

Without looking at your hand, toss the bunch of keys straight up. Make the toss such that the bunch of keys reaches its peak about 50cm above your head.

Keep your head tilted up and sight the bunch of keys as it reaches the peak and starts to fall. Now catch the bunch of keys with the same hand that made the toss. You should be able to both toss and catch the bunch of keys without having to look directly at your hand.

So that's one of the ways that demonstrate how Juggling actually works. This principle (keeping your eye on the object when it's at the peak of the toss) leads to many possibilities in Juggling.

For example, you can toss one object up into the air. While you keep your eyes on that object, your hands could be doing something else with other objects. Or your whole body could be doing something else.

Put a Spin on it

As a Juggler, one of the moves that I like to do is the 360° Spin. This is what happens - while juggling some objects, toss one of them (or toss all the objects) upwards into the air. While the objects are in the air, spin around quickly and catch the falling objects.

This move, also known as the Flash Pirouette, requires that the juggler do a lot of things correctly. One of these things is to be able to quickly spot the objects in mid-air before catching them.

How to Juggle

Now that you've watched my videos, how about learning how to juggle?

Juggling is very fun and it's also a great way to exercise your body and your mind at the same time. Juggling can be done indoors and outdoors. I do both.

I like to practise outdoors regularly because it's an easy way for me to get some sunshine to increase my Vitamin D level naturally. It's also spacious where I juggle - the space outside allows me to do things that I can't (or shouldn't) do when I'm indoors at home.

Tenet Challenge

"Tenet" is a movie that's currently playing in cinemas around the world. The cinematic blockbuster is directed by Christopher Nolan, whose other movies include Inception, Interstellar, Dunkirk, and the Dark Knight trilogy.

Tenet features time-bending sequences that are woven into the cerebral and physical elements of the story. This is one of the movie trailers.

Christopher Nolan has a signature style of movie storytelling using the concept of Time. We can make a reference to an early movie (2000) by Nolan, "Memento", which revealed the story in a reverse chronological sequence. Memento is a highly acclaimed movie and it was a breakthrough for Nolan.

In recent weeks, Warner Bros (the movie studio) launched an online challenge tied to the release of the Tenet movie. I took up the fun (and safe) challenge with this video.

I thought it would be visually interesting to apply a time-reversal effect (similar to those seen in Tenet) on my video, such that my video shows what I did from back to front. It was also fun to synchronise the video with a segment of the movie trailer soundtrack. Turn up the speaker volume and watch it:

Hooray! I can finally write a post about money. In this post, I share 3 concepts about what you can do with your money. Over the past few months, (no) thanks to both the Covid-19 virus outbreak and the declining economy, I've had plenty of time to explore these concepts. The videos in this post show different ways of handling money.

No, I'm not a financial advisor. As you might already know, I'm an entertainer and performer of Juggling. I've juggled many kinds of objects, even money. I've been blogging for years about juggling but I've never done one about "money".

It's now the time for this post about money. I invite you to take a different look at how to handle money.

Coins

The type of coins that I used in the videos.

Just in case you weren't already aware, coins can be juggled (just like balls and other objects) even though they are very small. However, tiny and lightweight coins can be a little tricky to juggle. You would need to put in extra effort to sight them as the tiny coins are tossed into the air. You would also need to carefully control your movements in response to the weight of the tiny coins.

Now, this post is focussed on - interesting moves and tricks that you can do with coins. In this post, I won't be showing the regular cascade juggling pattern. Instead, I will show 3 rather unusual tricks that help to illustrate 3 concepts.

Skill is involved, just as it is in regular juggling. Since the tricks are skill-based, you would be using your hands. In the beginning, it would seem difficult or impossible to do these moves. Continual practice, however, will make the moves easier to do.

These are the 3 concepts that I'd like to share with you:

Be as quick as lightning
Leverage on your own physical structure
Keep your eyes on the targets

Be as quick as lightning

"The hand is quicker than the eye" goes an old saying. Actually, that isn't always the case. But when it comes to doing tricks with coins, it's important to execute the key moves without hesitation.

In the following video, I perform an illusion:

Here's a snippet of how someone responded to it. I was very happy to receive this message. It meant that I had moved quickly enough to make the illusion work as I had intended.

Be as quick as lightning.

Leverage on your own physical structure

There's another saying, "Know it like the back of your hand". It means to be very familiar with something in the same way that one is familiar with the back of one's own hand.

How about being familiar with your own wrist? Take a look at your wrist and observe what happens when you snap your fingers. The tendons and ligaments of the wrist move when you snap your fingers.

Here's a snappy little trick with a small coin - I make a coin flip over with a snap of my fingers:

I find this little trick to be amusing and strangely satisfying to do. It's best to try it with a small coin. It takes quite a while to locate the best spot, on your own wrist, to place the coin. It's important to position the coin at that sweet spot so that every finger-snap "generates enough power" to flip the coin.

Keep your eyes on the targets

This particular trick requires more physical effort than the other tricks above. This trick is also a demonstration of all the 3 concepts outlined in this post. Take a look at the following video in which I catch 3 coins with one hand:

It happens quickly. Watch the video to the end because there are slow-motion replays. Watch the video again and this time, observe my eyes. Where do I look when I'm performing the trick? I keep my eyes on the coins. If I were to lose sight of the coins, I wouldn't be able to catch them.

You may also wish to try out the third trick but with only 1 or 2 coins for a start. Repeated viewing of the videos might help you learn.
