The last day of summer camp was one of the best days of summer camp. Our young folks lived up to every expectation I had, and they outperformed beyond that, too. This week included sleight of hand, swords, hiding in public spaces, and today: rescuing a damsel (or two) in distress.

Training was awesome this morning. We went through the first few kata of the Gyokko Ryu Chu Ryaku no Maki  by doing the original of each, followed by any recorded variations. I already love Gyokko Ryu: it's a very strong martial arts lineage, with powerful, dynamic movements, and covers a huge variety of problems to overcome, all with unarmed techniques.

The elaborate way I think of it is, in the large Venn diagram of self-defense and martial arts, there are large  places where they overlap, but there's an even larger space where they don't.
