Even though we may have to overcome some obstacles, or many obstacles, life is good. Sometimes those obstacles are doubt and fear – but if they can be pushed off and/or overcome……the road to happiness can be a clear one.

One of the biggest obstacles we have had to face was to make the decision to move from the NY/NJ area where my husband lived his entire life and I lived for 15 years so that I could be closer to my family in Minnesota. We had talked about it for years and although he wasn’t crazy about the idea of leaving his own family or his friends, who are closer to him than many families are, he agreed to do it because it was always my dream to move “home” again.

So, what we did was put our house on the market and said that we would move once the house sold. We listed it at a really high price thinking we could have 6 months to a year until we would have to think about moving. Well, that was at the height of the real estate boom and BOOM really did happen for us – the house sold in two weeks.

My husband’s plan of delaying the move obviously hadn’t worked. But we did have one other hurdle in that he didn’t have a job in Minnesota. Since I was self-employed, I could keep doing that, but we ended up moving without him having a job. But, since we had a bunch of extra money from the sale of the house, we bought a second property to renovate and re-sell and that would be his moneymaking project until a job came around.

Well, the next couple of years were rough. As you know, the housing boom was followed by the housing bust and the economic slow down. He didn’t find another job. The house we bought and sunk repair money into had a contract for deed fall through with bad buyers who damaged the property. On top of all that, he hated Minnesota. It didn’t help that I dragged him from the big city to a small town. It also didn’t help that he’s Latino and the county we moved to is about 97% white.

But…..we stuck it out. We found renters – very GOOD renters – for the second house. He found a job – a great job that he LOVES! We bought a third house in a bit larger town closer to the metropolitan area. He has made friends and actually is turning into a bit of a Minnesotan. And I’m close to my family and even get to take care of my nephew several days a week. It was worth the wait. We’re both happy and looking forward to a bright future and a good life.

Super Easy Play Dough Recipe - Flour, Salt, Oil & Water

There are a LOT of play dough recipes out there and we have tried a bunch of them. This one is very easy to do and uses things you most likely have in your kitchen already.

1 cup flour
1 cup salt
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup water
optional: food coloring

Mix together the flour, salt and oil. If using food coloring, put a few drops into the water. Add the water to the mixture until it binds together (you may need slightly less or more). Knead the dough until it is smooth and easy to work with. When done playing, store in a ziptop bag or plastic storage container.
