It all started…

On 1st March 2009 when Orbit and Jelena Jankoviæ, full of enthusiasm, started collecting smiles. Their optimism overwhelmed citizens of Serbia, and we have all together after long and not even a little struggle managed to break the Guinness record in the number of photos with smiles. Patrols, e-mails, web site... finally we reached the magical figure of 130000 photos!

Fed Cup: Serbia in World Group A in 2010!

Serbian Fed cup team has defeated Spain, in the play off match for the World A group for 2010. The game was held on April 25 th and 26 th 2009 in Club de Tennis Lleida - Spain.
Jelena Jankovic, Ana Ivanovic, Ana Jovanovic and Aleksandra Krunic have played for the Serbian selection. They were leaded by selector Dejan Vraneš.

Day one: 1. Jelena defeated Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez - Serbia 1 : Spain 0

2. Ana Ivanovic defeated Anabel Medina Garrigues - Serbia 2 : Spain 0

The moment has come for the real stars of the tournament to start arriving in Marbella: the tennis players themselves. One of the first to arrive was Jelena Jankovic; ranked number 3 in the world, and who travelled to Malaga this morning from Miami, having changed flights in Madrid. Jankovic’s arrival at Malaga airport was the focus of major interest, and after collecting her baggage, the Serbian player headed off to Marbella in the company of her coach, Ricardo Sánchez and her brother, Marko Jankovic. The 24 year old Balkan star will be staying at Hotel Puente Romano in Marbella, just a few metres away from the Tennis Club where the tournament is taking place. On arrival, Jelena, looking tired after her long journey, explained how thrilled she is to be taking part in the tournament: “I am very happy to be in Marbella to compete in the Andalucía Tennis Experience” she said. “It is a lovely place and I can’t wait for it all to start”.

Jelena Jankovic, is Marbella's No.2 seed. By the gritty 23-year-old's usually consistent standards her season has been patchy so far, with a semifinal run at the Paris [Indoors] the best result to speak of. The switch to clay might be just the boost the two-time champion of Rome needs, but she too will need to get off to a flying start against wily Italian Francesca Schiavone.

Jelena won't play in Charleston

Jelena Jankovic won't be playing in Charlston this year. In 2007 Jelena won the tournament, and last year she played quarter-finals, falling to Zvonareva in three sets.

Not entering this tournament will cost Jelena 110 points, as she goes down on the WTA list.

Jelena to take on Venus

The match-ups for the inaugural BNP Paribas Shown in New York.
Organizers determined the draw according to the 2008 year-end rankings, with the highest ranked player taking on the fourth-highest ranked competitor, and so No.1 (Jelena) and No.4 (Venus) facing each other.

Both BNP Paribas Showdown semi-finals will be contested over one set with no-advantage scoring. The final will be played using traditional scoring, although a Super Tiebreak (first to 10 points) will take place instead of a regular third set if necessary. All three matches will take place on the same night, March 2, with play beginning at Madison Square Garden at 7.30pm.

Jelena and Venus have met nine times with Jelena leading 5:4. Their last meeting was in Doha (Sony Ericsson Championships 2008) where Jelena was beaten by Venus in three sets, 6:2, 2:6, 6:3.

According to the decision of the jury of Status magazine, Jelena Jankovic the best Serbian tennis player was pronounced for the personality of the year. On the ceremony in O3ONE gallery the awards are also consigned for the best photography and the best journalist in 2008.
In the traditional inquiry of Status magazine, in which 80 journalists and important persons took part, Jelena Jankovic was chosen.
"I am very proud that I was chosen among journalists for this complimentary title. I will strive to justify the expectations that this award means", said Jelena Jankovic.

Roger Federer should concentrate on his own career rather than criticising others, insists Serb Jelena Jankovic after being irked by the Swiss player's unflattering verdict on her No1 world ranking last year.
Last month, former men's world No1 Federer hit out at the way the WTA rankings were calculated, saying a player who has never won a grand slam should not be granted the top spot.

Jankovic reached No1 in the WTA rankings in August having never
won a major tournament. She lost her first grand slam final to American Serena Williams at last year's US Open, and the Serb has since dropped down to third in the world.

"I do not like to talk about players, I really prefer to focus on myself," said Jankovic.

She said she could not understand why Federer felt the need to hit out at women's tennis while his great rival Rafael Nadal, who took over from the Swiss as world No1 last year, was so "humble".

"Why should he even care?" said Jankovic. "I don't like putting my nose in others' business. One thing I like about Nadal is that he is such a great champion, he is so humble, always has kind words for everybody, he is a role model for everybody. Federer is a great champion, I don't want to get in a fight with him, but why does he care, I really don't understand. Why does he need to do that?"

Fed Cup: Spain hosts Serbia

Spain, who lost to Russia in the 2008 final, crashed out to the Czech Republic in the first round of this year's competition.

In the play-offs to determine which teams will participate in the elite eight-nation World Group I next year, Spain will host Serbia, who can call on former world number ones Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic.

Miguel Margets, Captain of the Spanish Fed Cup Team, said the draw was not favorable for Spain. He thinks that his team couldn't get tougher opponent, because Serbia has two top-10 players and both are former world number ones. Despite Spain will work as hard as possible to prepare well and try to overcome the obstacle named Serbia.

Serbia ready to host Japan for Fed Cup

Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic, playing together for the first time in a Fed Cup match on home soil this weekend, can propel Serbia into the world's elite, Jankovic said on Thursday.

World number three and team captain Jankovic said the World Group II tie against Japan, which is expected to attract crowds bigger than any of the top-tier matches, was an important stepping stone.

"We are a small country with a very young tennis tradition but now that we are at full strength, our objective is to reach the top level of the Fed Cup and win it," she told a news conference on Thursday.

"I will be honored to lead the team in our first Fed Cup match in Serbia and I am very excited about it.

"This time, we are playing for neither the lucrative prize money nor WTA points, we are going out there to perform for our country and the fans, who wake up in the middle of the night to watch us in grand slam events across the world."

"This really means a great deal to me, I was a very young girl the last time I played here," said 23-year old Jankovic.

World number eight Ivanovic, who has struggled on the WTA tour since winning last year's French Open, said she might have stage fright in front of what the organizers expect to be a packed Belgrade Arena with 18,000 seats.

"It is a strange feeling because I've never played a competitive match in my hometown and I am a bit nervous, but I will be more relaxed once the tie is underway," she said.

"I am overjoyed that we finally have the opportunity to play in front of our friends, families and supporters, who I expect to turn up in droves to create an electrifying atmosphere."

"Now, I need a good night's sleep to get the butterflies out of my stomach and when the tie is over, I will visit my grandparents as I haven't seen them for a long time."

Serbia has struggled in the Fed Cup with either Jankovic or Ivanovic unavailable due to injuries, fatigue or preparations for WTA tournaments.

Last year, they joined forces for the first time when Serbia advanced to World Group II from the Europe/Africa zone.

Jelena will play at Paris Open

Serbia's Jelena Jankovic has received a wildcard entry for next week's Paris Open in place of shoulder injury victim, and fellow ex-number one, Maria Sharapova, organisers said Thursday.

Jankovic will join top-ranked Australian Open champion Serena Williams and number four-ranked Russian Olympic champion Elena Dementieva at the Pierre-de-Coubertin stadium.

Sharapova underwent surgery on her right shoulder in October and the problem meant she was unable to defend her Australian Open title last month.

She slipped out of the top 10 on Monday for the first time since winning Wimbledon in July 2004 and is currently ranked 17th.

The Russian, who hasn't played since August, will also miss the Dubai event which starts on February 16.

Trio of Balkan stars ready to launch campaigns at Middle East’s premier tennis event

It wasn’t long ago that Serbian tennis hardly made a ripple on the world stage. Now a tidal wave of talent has emerged from the small but proud European nation.

The Super-Serb trio of Novak Djokovic, Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic have captured the imagination of the world, and all three will be vying for the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships title between 15th and 28th of this month.

Both Ivanovic and Jankovic have already climbed to world number one, and there is little doubt that Djokovic is set to join them in the not too distant future.

“To have so many top players from Serbia would have been unthinkable just a few short years ago,” said Colm McLoughlin, Managing Director of tournament owners and organisers Dubai Duty Free. “We are very happy to see all three of them here in Dubai, and wish them well as they do battle against a field that is second to none.”

Ivanovic made rapid progress by making her top 100 debut in 2004 after playing just four Sony Ericsson WTA Tour events and just a few months later, following Wimbledon in 2005, crashing into the world’s top 20 for the first time. Bizarrely, in that season she defeated Hungary’s Melinda Czink in the final qualifying round in Canberra before beating her again in the final to claim her first career title.

Delighting media and public alike with her ready smile and modest demeanour as well as her exciting brand of tennis, Ivanovic continued to rise up the rankings. A second title, in Montreal in 2006, was followed by three more in 2007 as she swept aside all opposition in Berlin, Los Angeles and Luxembourg. But it was on the biggest stages where Ana was now drawing attention, as she reached the 2007 final at Roland Garros and followed that up with an appearance in the Australian Open final in 2008.

Now clearly a Grand Slam champion in waiting, Ivanovic finally lifted the French Open trophy last summer with an exciting victory over Dinara Safina. That resounding triumph not only gave Ivanovic her first Grand Slam crown, but elevated her to number one in the world.

Not to be outdone and inspired by what her compatriot had achieved, Jankovic also racked up the wins and climbed the rankings to end 2008 as the world number one.

Reaching the top 100 for the first time in 2003, the next year she had won her first title and risen into the top 30. In 2005 a runner-up finish in Dubai lifted her into the top 20 for the first time. She also reached the finals of Birmingham and Seoul that year and the final of Los Angeles in 2006, before exploding into the world’s top three in 2007 with titles in Auckland, Charleston, Rome and Birmingham as well as finals across the globe in Sydney, s’Hertogenbosch, Toronto and Beijing. Add to that a Grand Slam Mixed Doubles title with Jamie Murray at Wimbledon.

But if that was good, 2008 was sensational, as she reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open and Roland Garros, reached the final in Miami, won Rome, and reached the final of the US Open before producing a stunning end to the season by winning three tournaments in three weeks, in Beijing, Stuttgart and Moscow.

That all earned the approval of Djokovic, who began last season by winning the Australian Open and ended it by lifting the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai.

He gave notice of what was to come when he finished 2005 as the youngest player ranked in the top 100, after making his Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open as a qualifier where, just three short years later, he would leave as the champion. The next year he claimed his first career title in Amersfoort, followed by a second in Metz, and he finished the season as the youngest player in the top 20. The next year ended with him as the youngest player in the top 10 as he continued his rise, with his first Masters Series titles coming in Miami and Canada together with further titles in Adelaide, Estoril and Vienna. But what really attracted the headlines was his first appearance in a Grand Slam final, at the US Open in New York.

Last season saw him cement his position as number three in the world behind Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, with finals at Queen’s Club, Cincinnati and Bangkok and titles at Indian Wells and Rome added to his wins in Melbourne and Shanghai keeping him hot on their heels.

Q. You must have been happy with that game first up.

JELENA JANKOVIC: Yes, you know, always the first matches are the toughest for me, especially I haven't played for about two months. I didn't compete. So, you know, it's nice to get going and get off to a good start.

I played well in the first set. A little bit, you know, slowed down, lost my concentration in the second. But it's all right. You know, it comes with playing matches, you know, getting the routine, and, you know, just the whole rhythm out there.

So happy to get through, and looking forward to my next round.

Q. Did you feel the benefits of your rigorous training schedule in the off‑season today? Did you feel fitter on court?

JELENA JANKOVIC: Yeah, I feel fit and ready to play. You know, conditions are quite tough out there. It's very warm. One problem that I had was my feet were burning. You know, the soles of my shoes got so hot. Probably you have seen in the changeovers I was putting my feet on ice, you know, kind of trying to cool it down.

But I don't know if the other players are having that problem, as well. But that was, you know, my main kind of a little problem out there.

Q. What can you tell me about Kirsten Flipkens, your next opponent?

JELENA JANKOVIC: I don't really know much about her. I think I played her once maybe two years ago or something like that. But I haven't seen her play lately. I will just go out there playing my game.

Q. When we speak about Belgian tennis, I guess you rather think of Kim and Justine, no?

JELENA JANKOVIC: Yes, you know, but this is the same, for example, like Serbian tennis. When you think of Serbian tennis you think of me and Ana. Maybe afterwards maybe there will be nobody coming, or maybe even players better than us.

You know, this is the way it goes. That was a great generation coming from Belgium.

Q. If I tell you she's a bit of a mix of Kim and Justine, will you trust me or not?

JELENA JANKOVIC: I don't need to trust anybody (laughter). That is the best thing to do. I don't trust anybody. I go out there and play my game and compete and fight until the last point. You know, I hope that I can do it.

Q. Do you adjust your game to your opponent?

JELENA JANKOVIC: You adjust. It's always nice to know a little bit about the opponent's game so that you know, you know, the weakness and the strength, so how you need to play tactically.

But most likely you play your game. You try to set, you know, your rhythm and try to go your way. You know, you don't want to let your opponent dictate the points and play the way they want to play. You want to go on top of them and do, for example, what I do best.

But especially playing opponents that you don't really know so well, uhm, it's a little bit difficult. But, you know, the coaches I think are there to see my opponents a little bit and see what they do, kind of just a little bit to know so that I'm ready and prepared for my next one.

Q. How do you like your new dress, apparel line? Are shoes part of it?

JELENA JANKOVIC: Yeah, you have seen the dress on the court. I think it's a nice dress. You know, I like the green. It's bright. It's a quite comfortable dress. I think it looks feminine. No, I also like my shoes.

You know, the whole outfit is kind of coordinated. I have white and green shoes. I have my little wristband, my dress. I think it looks like. I'm happy that, you know, I'm working with this new company, which is called ANTA.

This dress I haven't designed, but in the future I will be working with a designing team and I will have my own dresses and a whole range of clothes with my name on it. So it's quite cool. You know, I'm happy, really happy about it.

Q. You're the first tennis player of the rank. Are they familiar with the needs of tennis?

JELENA JANKOVIC: They are new in tennis. For me, it's an honor that they have chosen me as their first spokesperson. They want to grow in tennis, as well, worldwide. They want to have a big name. Hopefully we can go forward and succeed in that manner.

Q. They're doing your shoes right?

JELENA JANKOVIC: They're doing my shoes, everything.

Q. Can you get them to adjust the shoes because they're too hot?

JELENA JANKOVIC: I don't know. I will tell them to put some air‑conditioning in there (laughter). Especially with the technology growing and getting better, I believe in the future we will have these kind of things, too. It would be nice (laughter).

Q. Did you have this problem with other shoes?

JELENA JANKOVIC: Yes. I think every year when I come here in Melbourne, and Sydney as well, because the weather goes over 30 degrees almost to 40 degrees. The court gets so hot, you know. It's normal that the soles of the shoes will get hot, as well. Especially moving, from the friction, it gets warmer and warmer. Really it's like fire, my soles of my shoes.

I don't know what to do, how to help that. You know, ice a little bit in the changeovers. That's basically it. What can I do?

Q. Does it surprise you coming in here that Serbia has the top couple of women and that Novak is defending champion?

JELENA JANKOVIC: Why is it surprising?

Q. In terms of Serbia wasn't a powerhouse tennis nation such as the United States or Australia.

JELENA JANKOVIC: Yeah, Serbia before, you're right, didn't have tennis tradition and didn't have players in the top of the game. Now we do. Now we have established ourselves as the players who are in elite group.

You know, I'm No. 1 in the world. Ana has been No. 1, as well. Novak, he's No. 3, and he's on his way. We are doing very, very well. I hope that we can continue to have many more years. I hope that we will have more success in the future.

Q. When you think of the tradition that you are setting up for future generations, what do you hope that is to people?

JELENA JANKOVIC: I hope that in a way we can inspire and motivate younger generations to develop their game and go our way, go our paths. Just the fact thinking if Jelena or Ana or Novak have done it, they made it to the top, why can we not do it? If they have that kind of mentality, they see how we are doing. If we can motivate them, I think we have a bright future ahead in Serbian tennis.

Q. Is there any talk yet of building a national tennis center?

JELENA JANKOVIC: I don't know about that. I hope they're going to build something. It would be nice. Would be a really huge help. You know, having also highly educated coaches, you know, that have the knowledge for bringing the players to the top, traveling a lot and seeing.

Every year the game gets better and better. You're learning, so I think that's very important, too. But hopefully we will have all of this in the future.

Q. Ana and you are, on paper at least, the best combination to probably unseeded the Russians as Fed Cup champions. How tough of a team would they be to challenge?

JELENA JANKOVIC: Russia?

Q. Yes.

JELENA JANKOVIC: You know, to be honest, we are for the first time just entering the World Group. We are playing against Japan in Serbia for the first time. We never had any success in Fed Cup because we never played, you know, as the strongest team.

Me and Ana just teamed up for the first time last year. We have played against Croatia. We won that tie. Now we are going to play against Japan. So I hope that we can start playing with each other more often, and hopefully one day we can win the whole ‑ how you say ‑ competition.

Q. Do you think Russia is tough?

JELENA JANKOVIC: Yeah, I think Russia, and United States as well, they have two strong girls. Not many countries have been proud to say that they have two top‑5 players in the world. But Russia is one of them, or two top‑10 players. United States, as well, has two elite players.

You know, it will be tough if we get to play against them. But, you know, we still have to pass I don't know how many rounds before we get there.

Q. Other players describe the Aussie Open as the people's slam, the weekend slam, the happy slam.

JELENA JANKOVIC: The weekend slam, what is that (laughter)? The party slam, as well.

Q. Maybe you call it the hot feet slam. How would you characterize this tournament?

JELENA JANKOVIC: This tournament, it is true, it's one of the most relaxing Grand Slams out of the four. The people are so outgoing and relaxed. The whole atmosphere, it's not so noisy when you're around this tournament. You know, I really enjoy it. It's quite laid back, especially where I'm staying. I'm here with my family. I'm staying in an apartment. I feel like just, you know, quite peaceful.

Q. Do you feel like your spirits are higher here than at other points in the year?

JELENA JANKOVIC: Especially traveling here like 20 or 30 hours to get here, you know, you feel like you're at the end of the world. That's how I feel. I feel so far away from home. When you come here, you really want to give your best and you want to enjoy.
This is one of the countries I really like a lot. The only thing I don't like is traveling here. That is the only thing I dislike.

"She's consistent and I guess being No.1 is also about being consistent, she is very hard to beat," Mauresmo said of Jankovic.

"But at this point she hasn't won a grand slam.

"I was in that position earlier in my career and you feel that you deserve it, but definitely want to prove it by winning a grand slam."

But Mauresmo said Jankovic, who reached a grand slam final for the first time at the US Open, losing to Williams, would be helped by her youth.

"It makes it harder the longer time goes by," she said.

"For her I think she's still at the beginning, she's been No.1 for the first time last year.

"So it's still in her hands I would say and I think she will make it at some point."

Without the defending champion, organisers praying for a withdrawal-scare-free week would have blanched at the news that world No. 1 Jankovic had shortened last week's Hong Kong hit-out citing a virus. Her presence on court two yesterday morning, sweating and scowling her way through a vigorous workout, was welcomed. A teensy hint of melodrama tends to follow Jankovic, the self-styled Serbian princess who rose to the top ranking by year's end despite not winning a major and reaching only one slam final, at the US Open. There were heavy sighs aplenty in yesterday's session, often directed at her Spanish coach, Ricardo Sanchez.

"Move, move," Sanchez implored his charge. There were hints that her health might not be as rude as she would like, with Jankovic panting heavily and sinking hands to knees several times during her 15-minute window in front of the cameras. A distressed Jankovic is hardly a novel sight; her last Melbourne outing, a semi-final loss to Sharapova last January, included a medical break and a bizarre post-match rant about the painkillers she was popping and how she didn't want to end up like Heath Ledger.

Yesterday's unease may have simply been down to working hard while throwing off an annoying bug, and Sanchez seemed unconcerned about anything beyond the fitness of her backhand and forehand.

World number one Jelena Jankovic pulled out of the Hong Kong World Team Challenge with a stomach ailment on Saturday, organisers said.

The 23-year-old Serbian's Australian Open hopes hung in the balance after she was forced to withdraw from the exhibition tournament just nine days before the start of season's opening grand slam.

"I have been weak and sick for the last couple of days," Jankovic, a semi-finalist in Melbourne last year, told the crowd at Victoria Park Centre.

"I have been trying my best to get on the court but I feel slow, I have no reactions and it has been a struggle for me.

"My main goal now is to get back on court as soon as possible and get ready for the Australian. I will try and stay optimistic and hope for the best."

Jankovic had been scheduled to play China's Zheng Jie in a match between losing semi-finalists Team Europe and Team Asia Pacific when she pulled out.
