Students take to streets in support of Palestinian victims
Srinagar, Nov 21: Massive anti-Israel protests rocked the City Wednesday as students from various educational institutions including Kashmir University, Valley’s highest chair of learning and the Government Medical College (GMC) came out in support of the Palestinian people who have fallen prey to the recent onslaught by the Zionist forces, which left hundreds dead, wounded and homeless. At KU Carrying banners and placards, scores of university students poured in near Allama Iqbal library and marched through the campus shouting slogans against Israel and its allies. “Palestine does not need UN or West, it needs another Salah Ud Din,” read a banner while another one read “Khilafat is the solution”. “Israel is the illegitimate child of the west and receives full support for its terrorist acts against the Palestinians,” the students shouted. “Hamas is an elected government and attacking its officials amounts to terrorism and war,” they added. Another student said their bond with Palestinians was based on “Islamic brotherhood” and that the “pain, war and peace of Muslims world over is one.” The students shouted slogans like “Teri Pati Meri Pati Gaza Pati Gaza Pati” and “Gaza se Rishta Kya La Illaha Illal Lah.” The protests concluded with funeral prayers in absentia for the over 140 people killed in Gaza in the past week of Isreali shelling. At GMC SrinagaNAGAr The GMC Srinagar students held rallies in support of Palestine and demanded immediate halt to Israeli aggression in Gaza. Students waving Palestinian flags and raising voice in support of Gaza people carried placards reading ‘Save Palestine, Freedom to Palestine’ and ‘Is killing of an 11-year old boy justified.” They also bashed the Arab monarchs for being silent on the issue. “It’s irony that the Muslims are being brutally murdered by shameless Israelis, while the Arab countries which are supposed to represent the Muslims are acting as mute spectators. Infact they have become stooges of US and its allies,” said a first year student of GMC. At least 105 people have died in the Gaza Strip in past six days of violence, Hamas officials say, as Israeli forces continue their bombardment.

Srinagar, Nov 19: A three-day national level seminar on faunal diversity began at the University of Kashmir on Monday. The seminar titled “Faunal diversity: challenges and opportunities” is organized by the varsity’s Department of Zoology in collaboration with the Indian Science Congress Association. The Minister for Higher Education Abdul Gani Malik inaugurated the seminar, which is being attended by experts from various states of India. Speaking on the occasion, Malik said that human population explosion and the decline in wildlife fauna and flora is a global problem and rapid technological development made by man has resulted in irreparable loss to wildlife. “India is no exception to this,” he said, adding that many animals are at present in the list of endangered species. He said several steps have been taken for conservation of wildlife–plants and animals—which includes framing and implementation of laws, increase in protected area network, creation of national parks, sanctuaries, biosphere reserves, captive breeding. “But in spite of all this, wildlife continues to suffer and therefore a lot requires to be done,” the Minister said. He said that under such conditions scientific research on environment ecology and management assumes significance for the formulation of strategies and comprehensive management for conservation of wildlife and faunal diversity. KU’s Dean Academic Affairs Prof AM Shah described the seminar theme as relevant and innovative. Giving an overview of changing economic scenario of the country from 1991 onwards, he said that it is through innovative research only that our students and scholars can be part of the development process. KU Registrar Prof Zafar Reshi called for establishment of a bio-diversity Board in the State “to safeguard the rich biodiversity of the state.” He spelled out the urgent need for creating a work force for the documentation of biodiversity in India. Earlier Prof Ghulam Mustafa Shah, Seminar President and Dean Faculty of Biological Sciences, said that loss of biodiversity is a great concern for the State. He said the need of the hour is to continue with research to address all challenges confronting the biodiversity. General Secretary ISCA Dr Vijay Laxmi Saxena said the organization is meant to advance and promote the cause of science in India. “The present collaboration is bound to benefit all of us in finding ways and means to safeguard our rich bio diversity,” she said. Prof M Nayyar Azim, Head, Department of Zoology presented vote of thanks while Iram Khursheed, Research Scholar, conducted proceedings of the seminar. Others who were present on the occasion include Dr BM Arora, President Association of Indian Zoo and Wildlife Veterinaries; Prof MK Jyoti, Convener, ISCA; Prof DC Goutum from HP University, Shimla; Prof K K Sharma from Jammu University.

‘We’re Not Liars; Our Demands Are Genuine’

Rajouri, Nov 19: The deadlock between the students of Engineering and Technology College of the Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU) here sees no end, with students continuing to boycott their classes for the fifth straight day Monday. A meeting to ‘sort out all issues’ today failed to reach consensus, thus aggravating the situation on the campus. The students are demanding supplementary examination for which they had approached the varsity administration. “We got no response from the authorities,” the protesting students told Greater Kashmir, adding, “With the result, we were forced to go on indefinite strike.” The students are on strike from past Thursday. The students are also demanding ‘greater transparency’ in examinations and campus recruitments and placements. According to sources, the student-administration tussle intensified with a statement by the varsity Registrar Rashid Choudhary who had stated that the students were “lying” with regard to their demands. The students flayed the statement, saying “it doesn’t behoove the top official of University to make such comments, especially to call the students as liars.” Meanwhile, the students continued to boycott the classes today and held protest demonstration. They raised slogans against the University authorities, accusing them of failing to address their genuine grievances. Sources said the varsity administration today held a meeting with the protesting students. The meeting, however, failed to reach a consensus in the wake of a walkout staged by the students following “non-serious attitude of officials to address their problems.” “Unless our demands are not fulfilled, we will continue with our strike,” they said.
