Announcing the New JKI TortoiseSVN Tool for LabVIEW

http://forums.jkisoft.com/index.php?showtopic=1111&view=findpost&p=2460

You don't have to look very hard to find JKI Engineers raving about how TortoiseSVN (TSVN) is our software version control system of choice. It's a critical part of our workflow, and we couldn't imagine living without it. However, using TSVN requires leaving LabVIEW and going to the Windows Explorer for every operation. We like to do our work inside LabVIEW.

That's why we're excited to announce the new JKI TortoiseSVN Tool for LabVIEW.

The JKI TortoiseSVN Tool for LabVIEW is a new JKI product that puts the power of TortoiseSVN into your LabVIEW Tools menu.

The JKI TortoiseSVN Tool for LabVIEW in use

TortoiseSVN, Without the Shell

The JKI TortoiseSVN Tool for LabVIEW adds a new TortoiseSVN submenu to the Tools menu in LabVIEW. To invoke a given TortoiseSVN operation on the current VI, just select the command you want from the menu.

"But," you may be saying to yourself, "it's already easy to use TortoiseSVN from the Windows Explorer! Why do I need to integrate it with LabVIEW?" That's a good question. The JKI TSVN Tool solves a few significant problems that you may be so used to working around, you don't notice them anymore!

No more searching for a VI's location on disk. To use TSVN in the Windows Explorer, you have to know where a given VI in LabVIEW's memory lives on disk. This requires you to stop thinking about your code, switch to Windows Explorer, find the window your VI lives in (or worse, open a new window & navigate to the right folder), and locate your VI. With the JKI TSVN Tool, all you have to do is go to the Tools menu in the VI window you've already got open, select Commit… and then get back to work.

No more manually syncing VIs after TSVN modifies them. Some TSVN operations can affect VIs that LabVIEW already has in memory. For example, if you perform an SVN Update or Revert on a file on disk, you have to remember to also revert the file in LabVIEW. At the very least, this is an annoying distraction. But it can be downright painful if you forget to do it and discover an SVN Conflict (or worse, a corrupted VI) when you commit your code later! The JKI TSVN Tool takes care of this for you. When you do an SVN operation on a VI from the TSVN Tool menu, it automatically makes sure that your VI in memory is synchronized to the VI file on disk.

It's just easier. Mental context-switching is a productivity killer. The JKI TSVN Tool for LabVIEW eliminates a lot of mini-context switches and helps you stay focused on solving the problems at hand.

There are other benefits to using the JKI TortoiseSVN Tool for LabVIEW, as well. For example, if you want to see a VI's SVN Log, simply go to Tools–>TortoiseSVN–>Show Log … This will allow you to see the commit history of your VI, in just a couple clicks, whenever you need it. We've identified the SVN functions we use most often, and made them accessible from within your LabVIEW environment.

You can try the JKI TortoiseSVN Tool for LabVIEW for free. So feel free to try it out and improve your LabVIEW and TortoiseSVN workflows today!

Watch a quick video:

View the full article

Announcing the JKI Right-Click Framework for LabVIEW

http://forums.jkisoft.com/index.php?showtopic=1101&view=findpost&p=2434

JKI is excited to announce the upcoming release of the JKI Right-Click Framework for LabVIEW in the JKI Labs. This amazing tool allows you to create new features in LabVIEW and use new features created by other developers. It does this using the power of LabVIEW Scripting (using LabVIEW to programmatically edit LabVIEW code).

How it Works

The JKI RCF manages plug-ins (we call these “right-click plug-ins”). Each plug-in adds right-click menu options for different types of Block Diagram and Front Panel objects (functions, structures, controls, etc) in LabVIEW. When the user chooses one of the right-click menu options, the JKI RCF passes the LabVIEW object references into the plug-in associated with the context menu, and the plug-in performs its operations on those objects.

How to Use It

To use the JKI RCF, simply:

1) Select one or more LabVIEW functions, structures, controls, etc., on the Front Panel or Block Diagram of a VI.

2) Activate the JKI Right-Click Framework by pressing the configurable ”hot key.”

3) Right-click on the selected objects and choose the operation you want to execute. The JKI RCF knows what type of object(s) you have selected, and automatically shows you the plugins that can operate on the current selection.

This video shows the JKI RCF in action:

How to Extend It

The JKI RCF will come with several useful plug-ins pre-installed. But its open architecture will also allow you to create your own plug-ins that can be shared with other users.

How to Get It

We’re working hard to get the JKI Right-Click Framework ready for release. Stay tuned, because it’s coming soon to the VI Package Network. That means that when it arrives, you’ll be able to install it in just a few clicks, using VI Package Manager!

History of the JKI Right-Click Framework

For years, JKI has been using LabVIEW’s under-the-hood Scripting capabilities to create software engineering and development tools for the LabVIEW environment. One of the challenges that our team faced was making our tools easily accessible to the developer, at the time they were needed. The solution was the right-click menu and, circa LabVIEW 8.0, the JKI Right-Click Framework was born. Since then, it has remained an internal tool at JKI, due to the uncertainty about whether public use of LabVIEW’s scripting features would ever be officially condoned by NI.

In December 2008, we noticed a post on Darren Nattinger’s blog, describing exactly what we’d already built. So we showed the JKI RCF to Darren (who is on the LabVIEW R&D team) and then to others at NI. The consensus was that the JKI Right-Click Framework should be released to the public, along with LabVIEW Scripting and other LabVIEW APIs, so that LabVIEW developers could work together to create new features that make LabVIEW better and help people solve common programming challenges.

We’re very proud that the JKI Right-Click Framework has played a role in demonstrating to NI the enormous potential of LabVIEW Scripting in the LabVIEW Community, and we’re thankful that NI has worked hard to bring LabVIEW Scripting support to the public in the NI Labs. We think the JKI Right-Click framework and LabVIEW Scripting make up a powerful combination that will allow LabVIEW users to create and share all kinds of innovative features and tools in LabVIEW.

View the full article

In the last couple weeks, we have received several support inquiries from people who can’t get VIPM to connect to LabVIEW 8.6.1 (immediately after upgrading from 8.6).

In each case the user’s “VI Server: Exported VIs” settings (in the Tools>>Options dialog) had been changed, somehow.

This setting should have a value of “*” set to “Allow access”, as shown below:

We’ve created a special FAQ entry for this issue, here:

After upgrading to LabVIEW 8.6.1, why can’t VIPM connect to LabVIEW?

We’re not really sure why this is happening and it doesn’t seem to happen to everyone — it appears to be something in the LabVIEW 8.6.1 installer. We’ll keep looking into it.

Meanwhile, if you’re having trouble getting VIPM to work with LabVIEW 8.6.1, please let us know in our forums.

View the full article
