Author Rae Z. Ryans and AimeeKay from AimeeKay's Reviews are co-hosting Readers for Retts Awareness! The event was created to help spread the word about Rett's Syndrome and give people a chance to meet the girls suffering from this awful disease and their families. Now, onto the details of the event: Currently they are seeking authors, bloggers, Rett families, and small businesses to help us spread the word about Rett Syndrome. They are looking for people interested in opportunities to host families, hold interviews, and spread the word about this disease affecting families and their daughters. Some quick facts about Rett Syndrome:
—Debilitating neurological (movement) disorder that predominantly affects females. (Boys generally die from it because of the genetics involved)
—Baby girls are born "normal" but begin to lose acquired skills between the ages of 1-3 years old.
—Caused by a single gene mutation that leads to underproduction of an important brain protein.
—The leading genetic cause of severe impairment in girls - most cannot speak, walk or use their hands.
—Despite their physical disabilities, girls with Rett Syndrome are believed to be functioning mentally at a much higher level than previously thought.
—As prevalent as Cystic Fibrosis, ALS and Huntington's.
—Another little girl is born with Rett Syndrome every 90 minutes.
—Rett Syndrome is a potentially REVERSIBLE disorder. Research has proven once protein levels are back to normal levels, symptoms subside.

Inferno Park is a standalone book, not a series.

I'm also deep into writing a new book, which I hope to release before Halloween. This one involves ghosts and seems like a lot of fun so far.

EXCERPT

Blue-skinned rusalki grappled Dindi under the churning surface of the river. She could feel their claws dig into her arms. Their riverweed-like hair entangled her legs when she tried to kick back to the surface. She only managed to gulp a few breaths of air before they pulled her under again.

She hadn't appreciated how fast and deep the river was. On her second gasp for air, she saw that the current was already dragging her out of sight of the screaming girls on the bank. A whirlpool of froth and fae roiled between two large rocks in the middle of the river. The rusalka and her sisters tugged Dindi toward it. Other water fae joined the rusalki. Long snouted pookas, turtle-like kappas and hairy-armed gwyllions all swam around her, leading her to the whirlpool, where even more fae swirled in the whitewater.

"Join our circle, Dindi!" the fae voices gurgled under the water. "Dance with us forever!"

"No!" She kicked and swam and stole another gasp for air before they snagged her again. There were so many of them now, all pulling her down, all singing to the tune of the rushing river. She tried to shout, "Dispel!" but swallowed water instead. Her head hit a rock, disorienting her. She sank, this time sure she wouldn't be coming up again.

"Dispel!" It was a man's voice.

Strong arms encircled her and lifted her until her arms and head broke the surface. Her rescuer swam with her toward the shore. He overpowered the current, he shrugged aside the hands of the water faeries stroking his hair and arms. When he reached the shallows, he scooped Dindi into his arms and carried her the rest of the way to the grassy bank. He set her down gently.

She coughed out some water while he supported her back.

"Better?" he asked.

She nodded. He was young--only a few years older than she. The aura of confidence and competence he radiated made him seem older. Without knowing quite why, she was certain he was a Tavaedi.

"Good." He had a gorgeous smile. A wisp of his dark bangs dangled over one eye. He brushed his dripping hair back over his head.

Dindi's hand touched skin--he was not wearing any shirt. Both of them were sopping wet. On him, that meant trickles of water coursed over a bedrock of muscle. As for her, the thin white wrap clung transparently to her body like a wet leaf. She blushed.

"It might have been easier to swim if you had let go of that," he teased. He touched her hand, which was closed around something. "What were you holding onto so tightly that it mattered more than drowning?"

Take the Nomad Bus Tour!

(This post is a part of the IndieSummer event put together by Rachel from Parajunkee and Lori from Contagious Reads.)

For the Indie Summer tour, each author is writing about a different city. The natural choice for me was New Haven, Connecticut, because much of Nomadis set there, and I did a lot of research about the city while writing the book.

The main character, Raven, travels back in time five decades to assassinate a future dictator when he is still a very young man. She tracks him to New Haven, and things do not go as planned.

If reading Nomad inspires you to visit New Haven, you might want to buy a ticket on the Nomad New Haven Tour Bus to see the sights mentioned in the book! Since the tour bus is imaginary, we’ll say it’s awesome. It’s one of those London double-deckers, with a nightclub on the first level and an open-air cafe on the second. It’s a really cool bus. Here are some of the stops along the way, which your tour guide will describe over the P.A. as you dance and drink your way around town.

New Haven Green: The first “scenic” spot Raven encounters on her trip back to 2013, the Green is an original piece of the New Haven settlement and dates back to 1638. Now a grassy park with three cute little churches, the green was the town’s graveyard for more than a century. Thousands of bodies are buried under the park, though the headstones have long since been removed.

Yale University: Have you ever wondered what it would look like if early twentieth century Americans decided to build a village of Gothic castles with high walls, dark spires, and gargoyles? Thanks to Yale, you don’t have to wonder any longer! The main schools are several stories high, with lovely sharp towers, and give off the sense that you could, just possibly, walk into a medieval royal banquet and get yourself tortured.

Grove Street Cemetery: If you’re still wondering about those missing headstones from the Green, here they are, lined up in rows inside the high, dark walls of Grove Street Cemetery. Full of obelisks and sculptures, the cemetery’s most interesting feature is probably the high front gate, done in ancient Egyptian style, engraved with the words “The Dead Shall Be Raised.”

Kroon Hall: Part of Yale’s School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, Kroon Hall is not a medieval castle but a building designed with the most advance methods of minimizing its ecological impact. Build with recycled materials, shaped with temperate regulation in mind, and topped with solar collectors, the building also recycles runoff and ground water in a pond filtered by aquatic plants to provide gray water. Raven inadvertently causes a disaster here. I was fascinated to read about the building’s design.

Book Trader Cafe: This cafe sells used hardcovers at very low prices, so it sounds like a place to visit on any trip to New Haven. Raven ducks in here to avoid police and ends up purchasing a copy of Slaughterhouse-Five.

In a scene deleted from the manuscript but not from the author’s heart, Raven eats dinner at a dive seafood restaurant by the wharf, with oysters, clams, and other freshly-caught, expertly prepared New England delicacies. This is where our imaginary tour bus will now stop for lunch.

Whether you’re interested in history, architecture, fine seafood, or just looking for today's city clue for the Indie Summer event, the answer is the same: New Haven!

Tons of blogs helped out with the Nomad cover reveal on Monday, but in case you missed it, here it is:

By the age of nineteen, Raven has spent most of her life in the sprawling slums of America, fighting as a rebel against the dictatorship. When the rebellion steals an experimental time-travel device, she travels back five decades to the year 2013. Her plan: assassinate the future dictator when he is still young and vulnerable, long before he comes to power. She must move fast to reshape history, because agents from her own time are on her trail, ready to execute her on sight.

OK, obviously I'm a bad blogger. You can tell by how my last post was like two months ago and has almost 80 spam comments, the blog equivalent of weeds and a sure sign of neglect. In this, my blog looks a bit like my front lawn, sadly.

Anyway, I've been mostly taking care of my son (who just turned 2!) and writing when I can. Happily, I'm wrapping about a new book that will come out next month!

The novel is called Nomad and is the story of a young woman who travels back in time fifty years, to 2013, to try and prevent a dystopian future. The cover reveal will be Monday, June 24, on tons of book blogs (thanks to all the bloggers who are helping out!). (If you have a blog and want to participate, the cover reveal sign-up is at http://eepurl.com/AACi5.) It's another lovely cover by Claudia at Phatpuppy Art.

Nomad will be released on Friday, July 26.

I'll have some guest blogs and giveaways around then! I'm definitely planning a special giveaway for my Facebook page, among other things.
