Buenos Aires High Performance / Concurso de Arquitectura para estudiantes

Propuesta:

El objetivo principal del presente concurso es desarrollar el edificio principal de un centro de tecnificación deportiva de futbol (BAAR – Buenos Aires Alto Rendimiento) dentro de las inmediaciones del parque Julio A. Roca aprovechando la preexistencia de una serie de campos de fútbol.

Para aquellos deportistas que lo deseen y cumplan con el perfil el BAAR se convertirá en su nueva casa durante una gran parte del año. Allí vivirán, estudiarán y entrenarán, compartirán experiencias con otros jóvenes como ellos y serán supervisados por los mejores profesionales que puedan asegurarles un desarrollo sostenible de sus facultades y los puedan guiar por el duro camino que hay que recorrer hasta llegar a convertirse en un deportista de élite.

And Happy Spring. The ground's finally thawing in Tohoku, and kids are taking pride and slide (tackles) in recovered public spaces. As you draw up plans for a Spring weekend, we've got 5 things you may want to to work into your agenda.

PROJECT UPDATES

Africa: Football for Hope
On the move: Cape Verde Design Fellow Ana Reis just relocated to Tarrafal, site of Football for Hope Center #16 is located. The center host, Delta Cultura Cabo Verde, focuses on using soccer and art to create a safe space for socioeconomically disadvantaged young people. Also, after long months of tendering and negotiations, construction has started at our project site in QwaQwa! DF George Kinuthia is overseeing foundation construction; the Center is slated to open in early September.

NIKE Gamechangers

New York's Coleman Oval Skatepark recently closed to the public for a dramatic upgrade. Builder and design collaborator California Skateparks has been hard at work and construction has gotten off to a good start. Coming up next…concrete comes to the Manhattan Bridge skatepark!

The Design Package for Gamechangers New Delhi has been compiled and shared with Architecture for Humanity HQ and community partner Magic Bus for their comments; the construction agreement will soon be signed between Magic Bus & Contractor and work is expected to finish within two months.
While the design for the Rio Floods Disaster Recovery is moving forward, the media has started to show interest in the disaster recovery project that is happening in Petrópolis - a reporter visited our site and asked for images of the project to be published in Rio's most important newspaper!

Japan: Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami Rebuilding

The Ohya Green Sports Park Signage project celebrated its opening workshop/ceremony. The beautiful signage by Mr. Higashi welcomes the visitors to the field, and Eisuke Nakanishi, a former Japanese national team member of the 1998 World Cup, attended as a special guest. We're resuming phase two of the Akahama Covered Alley project, and the Kitakami "We Are One" team is taking measurements on-site, and final design approval is imminent.

Haiti: Rebuilding Center

The Villa Rosa planning team has submitted their Priority One Design Package, and the rebuilding center has signed on Collège Coeur Immacule de Marie (CIM) in downtown Port-au-Prince as the latest school rebuilding project. Schematic design for the all-girls school is under way.

OPEN ARCHITECTURE CHALLENGE

510 teams, 71 countries, 1 goal. Registration closed for [UN]RESTRICTED ACCESS on May 1. Registrants hail from across the globe in our most nationally-diverse competition yet, and are working busily to get their designs online before June 1. Teams are following Facebook and Twitter feeds for meantime announcements such as Renzo Piano Building Workshop's late addition to the jury. Good luck, teams, in your remaining two weeks.

CHAPTER UPDATES

A Tribute to Suzanne Monaco
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of one of our chapter members, Suzanne Monaco. Some of you may have heard the news releases issued earlier: Suzanne was the victim of a traffic accident in San Francisco on May 6.
Suzanne was an active and much appreciated member of our chapter network community. She was currently participating on various chapter projects as well as the chapter’s steering committee. Her energy and creativity was an inspiration to many around her. Her fellow chapter members came to admire Suzanne’s commitment to share her talent and expertise for the greater good of the San Francisco community. She shall be greatly missed.

We invite all chapter members planning to attend this year's AIA Convention Design Expo in Washington DC to stop by the Architecture for Humanity booth at the Walter E. Washington convention center from Thursday May 17th through Saturday May 19th. Drop by Booth #363 and meet our staff and Washington DC chapter members! And if you are based in our nation's capital city and want to get involved, the chapter is seeking volunteers for several new projects.
The Sioux Falls chapter, one of our Chapter Micro Grant recipient last year, has officially obtained a building permit for the Prototype Garden Shelter after a long haul with zoning and site issues. Excavation will start imminently and construction is estimated to be completed by June 1st. Check out the final drawings and follow the construction phases.
The Seattle chapter is starting the design phase of the revitalization of the city's South Park neighborhood. The neighborhood, deeply affected by the closure of a nearby bridge, is seeking to improve pedestrian traffic and shopping experience for the community.
The New York City chapter is holding a kick-off meeting for the Coleman Oval Skate Park. If you're interested in public urban design and pop-up art, this project may be for you.
Our Athens chapter has been solicited to create a temporary public space in the courtyard of the National Theater of Greece. The space, staged to hold a series of performances and events, will be open through May 20th and is a great example of urban space design using recycled materials.
After a hiatus, the San Francisco chapter is gearing up for a full plate of exciting projects. The chapter will be holding an open-door meeting on May 23rd at 6:30pm at our HQ office. If you are interested in participating in several public space projects, a design competition for the Fillmore area, the StudentsRebuild program, or help with our architects-led AIA disaster response partnership, you'll want to attend this meeting.

La especulación que se ha llevado a cabo en los últimos años en Andalucía, con el valor del suelo y la vivienda, ha tenido consecuencias nefastas a nivel medioambiental, económico y social. Se ha depredado y segregado el territorio, se han multiplicado desproporcionadamente los precios, y amplios sectores de la población han quedado en riesgo de exclusión social, al no poder acceder de ninguna manera a la vivienda, o han visto mermada su calidad de vida al tener que destinar casi la totalidad de su salario al pago de las cuotas hipotecarias.
Frente a esta situación, las experiencias nacionales e internacionales de cooperativas de viviendas en cesión de uso establecen, a través de la propiedad colectiva, un sistema de acceso a la vivienda, (junto con otros espacios y servicios complementarios, compartidos por el grupo y en general abiertos al barrio) desvinculado de manera permanente del ánimo de lucro.
Este modelo, basado en la cultura comunitaria y en la gestión democrática, se presenta como una alternativa de acceso a la vivienda en Andalucía que garantice, también para las generaciones futuras, una vivienda asequible y comprometida con el medio ambiente y la sociedad.
La asociación universitaria Arquitectura y Compromiso Social organiza este año su XX Seminario, con el interés de provocar el debate público y la reflexión conjunta sobre este tema de actualidad, proponiéndonos contribuir a la difusión y promoción del modelo de cooperativas de viviendas en cesión de uso y disfrute, como una alternativa de acceso a la vivienda en Andalucía.

Domenig estudió Arquitectura en Graz entre 1953 y 1959. Tras acabar los estudios, Graz se convirtió en su principal centro de influencia, dando clases en la Universidad Técnica de Graz y realizando numerosas construcciones en dicha ciudad.

Desde 1963 y hasta 1973, trabajó conjuntamente con Eilfried Huth. Con posterioridad trabajó por su cuenta, exceptuando algunas colaboraciones con Hermann Eisenköck.

Su estilo se encuentra establecido en la postmodernidad. Algunos de sus trabajos dan la impresión de ser obras completas de arte, como por ejemplo su Opus mágnum, das Steinhaus en Steindorf.

Robots voladores escanean modelos en 3D de edificios históricos

Científicos de la Universidad de Granada han puesto en marcha un sistema que permite escanear modelos en 3D de edificios históricos mediante el uso de vehículos aéreos no tripulados (UAV, por sus siglas en inglés). Este proyecto unifica tres tecnologías que ya se emplean en la actualidad: los dispositivos UAV, las técnicas de reconstrucción 3D a partir de fotografías y la representación virtual de modelos.

Un equipo de la Universidad de Granada ha desarrollado un sistema que permite escanear modelos en 3D de edificios históricos mediante el uso de vehículos aéreos no tripulados (UAV). "El objetivo de este proyecto es poder obtener un modelo 3D de una fachada de un edificio histórico (por ejemplo, una catedral) de forma automática, con la mínima intervención humana posible y con un coste inferior a las alternativas disponibles en la actualidad (los escáneres 3D)", explican sus responsables.

Hasta la fecha, los vehículos aéreos no tripulados se aplican en numerosos campos de investigación, debido a su capacidad para moverse rápidamente sobre cualquier tipo de terreno irregular, sortear grandes obstáculos, y proveer información de múltiples sensores, permitiendo variar dinámicamente la posición y distancia de captación de los datos .

Sin andamios ni grúas

Aunque la autonomía de estos dispositivos es limitada, pueden bajar de las alturas para que un operario cambie la batería (operación que requiere sólo unos segundos), permitiendo a los UAV reanudar la tarea instantáneamente y de forma automática. De este modo, es posible realizar el escaneo en un tiempo récord, y se elimina la necesidad de utilizar elementos auxiliares tales como andamios o grúas.

Por su parte, las tecnologías de digitalización 3D permiten, a partir de distintas fuentes de información (sensores de distancia, cámaras estereoscópicas, múltiples imágenes geo-posicionadas tomadas desde diferentes ángulos, etc.) reconstruir modelos 3D de cualquier objeto real con una elevada precisión. Y las técnicas de realidad virtual permiten actualmente representar modelos tridimensionales con alta calidad (similar a lo que vemos en las películas 3D en los cines).

Las aplicaciones inmediatas son evidentes, ya que es posible tener un dispositivo autónomo que en cuestión de minutos puede obtener escaneadas fachadas con la misma o mayor precisión que un muy buen escáner 3D, ya que el dispositivo se podría acercar a unos pocos centímetros del edificio para capturar hasta los más pequeños y ocultos detalles sin necesidad de grúas u otros artificios.

Este proyecto se centra en la digitalización de fachadas y se plantea como un paso previo para demostrar la aplicabilidad de esta tecnología a la digitalización de cualquier volumen arquitectónico: edificios, construcciones, obra civil y monumentos. Todos estos elementos tienen en común que la mayor parte de la digitalización se realiza en parámetros verticales, y en zonas localizadas del espacio.

Financiación del CEI BioTic

En este proyecto participan distintos grupos de investigación de la Universidad de Granada: el Grupo de Modelos de Decisión y Optimización (MODO) y el Grupo de investigación en Informática Gráfica (GIIG); el Laboratorio de Realidad Virtual de la UGR, además de personal de la Universidad de Málaga y las empresas Intelligenia Dynamics y Virtum Graphics, ambas spin-off de la Universidad de Granada y agregadas del Campus de Excelencia Internacional (CEI) BioTic. No en vano, el CEI financiará este proyecto de investigación.

Además, el proyecto cuenta con la colaboración del Patronato de la Alhambra y el Generalife y CETURSA Sierra Nevada S. A., empresa participada mayoritariamente por la Consejería de Turismo, Comercio y Deporte de la Junta de Andalucía.

El triunfo de las ciudades Edward Glaeser

Edward Glaeser es profesor de Economía en Harvard, donde
también dirige el Taubman Center for State and Local
Government. Está especializado en el estudio de la economía de
las ciudades y ha escrito numerosos artículos sobre el crecimiento
urbano, los problemas de segregación o delincuencia y el mercado
inmobiliario. Colabora habitualmente con medios como The New York Sun y
The Boston Globe.

El mayor invento de la
especie humana

La relación entre el hombre y la ciudad se ha basado siempre en el
intercambio: el hombre creó la ciudad y ésta ha humanizado al
hombre. El triunfo de las ciudades parte de esta idea para hacer
un elogio de la metrópoli y de su potencial civilizador. El ser
humano es social por naturaleza y donde mejor ejerce esa sociabilidad es
en el núcleo urbano. Edward Glaeser, uno de los más reconocidos
expertos internacionales en Economía Urbana, traza un nuevo camino
que evidencia el triunfo de la ciudad por todo el mundo. Lo hace
reflexionando sobre lo que fueron y son Atenas, Florencia, Londres, París,
Tokio o Nueva York. Resalta contundentes datos estadísticos: 243
millones de estadounidenses se concentran en ciudades que representan
el 3 por ciento del espacio del país; Tokio y sus alrededores acogen a 36
millones de personas, Bombay a 12… La conclusión es obvia: el ser humano
prefiere vivir en la ciudad.

Glaeser se dedica con pasión al estudio de la dinámica de las
ciudades y, al hilo de ese gran tema central, trata la historia de la cultura,
de la economía, la tecnología, la ecología e incluso de la psicología. Las
ciudades, dice el autor, han sido motores de innovación desde la Atenas
clásica. Lo fue Florencia en el Renacimiento y Birmingham en la
Revolución Industrial. Es una realidad cada vez más evidente que la
densidad urbana ofrece el camino más corto para pasar de la miseria a la
prosperidad, de la inactividad al absoluto desarrollo. El autor rompe los
mitos que eclipsan la idea de progreso: la ciudad es el mayor invento de la
especie humana. Como bien enuncia el subtítulo: nuestra mejor creación
nos hace más ricos, más inteligentes, más ecológicos, más sanos y más
felices. Y sus logros benefician al mundo entero.

Gandhi, que dijo que la verdadera India estaba en sus aldeas, no
estaba tan en lo cierto. El desarrollo de la India, como el de todos los
países, depende casi por completo de sus ciudades y de sus núcleos
urbanos. Se da, a lo largo y ancho del mundo, una correlación casi
perfecta entre urbanización y prosperidad: la satisfacción existencial
aumenta en proporción al porcentaje de población que vive en ellas.

La pobreza

«La verdad central que hay detrás del éxito de la civilización y el
motivo primordial por el que existen las ciudades es la fuerza que
emana de la colaboración humana». Las ciudades son su gente,
no sus edificios; están hechas de carne y no de hormigón.

Incluso lo que parece una deficiencia, como puede ocurrir con la
pobreza en el caso de las ciudades, no lo es necesariamente. Éstas no
empobrecen a la gente, sino que atraen a los más necesitados.
Glaeser da la vuelta a los tópicos más enquistados: los pobres que
viven en ellas son una prueba de sus virtudes ¾más o menos visibles¾,
no de sus defectos. Una manera de comprender correctamente este
fenómeno es partiendo de la base de que la pobreza urbana no se debe
comparar con la riqueza urbana sino con la miseria rural.

Es preocupante, pues,
cuando una urbe no tiene pobreza
suficiente: ¿por qué no logra
atraer a los menos afortunados?
«En Londres hay muchos
banqueros porque es un buen sitio
para ser banquero. En ciudades
como Río de Janeiro hay muchos
pobres porque son sitios
relativamente buenos para ser
pobre». Pero las condiciones no
son en todos los lugares iguales: la
pobreza de Río no tiene comparación con la del nordeste rural de Brasil.
Hay barrios bajos que sirven a menudo de trampolines hacia la
prosperidad de clase media mientras que hay otros que no cumplen
funciones de desarrollo. Cuanto más alejados estén del núcleo, geográfica
y funcionalmente, menos posibilidades de progreso económico tienen.

Tecnología y ecología

El transporte siempre ha determinado la configuración de las
ciudades: en la antigüedad, no tan lejana, gozaban de un centro
determinado normalmente por su puerto o la estación de
ferrocarril. Cada vez más, las urbes se reestructuran en función
de su avance automovilístico: la modernidad hace que se extiendan hacia
el horizonte. Así, por ejemplo, la Norteamérica urbana del siglo XX no
pertenece tanto al rascacielos como al automóvil y a su capacidad de
rápida prolongación y fluidez. Éste hace viable un estilo de vida opulento
que inevitablemente tiene unos altos costes medioambientales.
Igualmente conlleva la paradoja de que cada mejora modifica las
costumbres de los usuarios, de modo que se anula el avance. Un ejemplo
claro son los gobiernos que invierten en un mayor número de carreteras o
carriles en las localidades que, en vez de traer comodidad y seguridad, lo
que promueven es una invitación a un mayor número de coches y de
tránsito.

Se demuestra asimismo que los ecologistas partidarios de la vida
en las afueras se equivocan. Las verdaderas aliadas del medio ambiente
son las ciudades, no las zonas periféricas. Los amantes de la naturaleza
que viven rodeados de árboles y hierba consumen mucha más energía que
los que viven en la urbe. Menos de un tercio de los neoyorquinos va al
trabajo en coche, frente al 86 por ciento de los estadounidenses que viven
en zonas residenciales.

Auge y decadencia

Los ejemplos que analiza Glaeser para dar cuenta del fenómeno
del auge significativo en las ciudades se refieren a países que
están dejando de ser tercermundistas para convertirse en
naciones emergentes. Es el caso de Bangalore y sus triunfadoras
empresas de tecnología de la información. El empresario de software se
ha sumado al campesino famélico y al brahmán con conciencia de casta en
la lista de estereotipos indios. Hoy, Bangalore es un punto de transmisión
de ideas; como lo fueron las ciudades que acogieron imprentas en los
siglos XV y XVI.

Las ciudades siempre han sido la forma más efectiva de
transmisión del saber entre civilizaciones. Una vez dentro, las sinergias
son constantes: una idea inteligente engendra necesariamente otra en un
proceso de adaptación constante a la era de la información.

Esta evolución se remonta a la Florencia del Renacimiento, con la idea de la perspectiva,
y se sigue desarrollando en el Nueva York de finales del siglo XX con
fenómenos relacionados como la capacidad de cuantificar la relación entre
riesgo y rentabilidad en las operaciones financieras.
Como bien sabemos, Brasil, China e India van a enriquecerse
mucho en los próximos años desempeñarán un papel clave. El capital se
creará en los núcleos urbanos que estén más ligados al resto del mundo,
no en las áreas rurales aisladas. Serán, pues, las ciudades y no las granjas
las que promoverán y proyectarán soluciones para los países que están en
vías de desarrollo.

Pero, de la misma manera que experimentan apogeos, también
decaen. Detroit, que perdió más de la mitad de su población en la segunda
mitad del siglo XX, es un buen ejemplo. La causa de su decadencia fue el
monocultivo industrial (automovilístico) que la caracterizó durante las
primeras décadas del siglo. La diversidad de producción fue más
favorable al desarrollo que la especialización en una sola empresa.
Además de sofocar la diversidad y la competencia imprescindibles para
estimular el crecimiento, Detroit nunca invirtió en las instituciones
educativas que sí permitieron a otras ciudades más diversificadas, como
Boston, Nueva York o Milán, resurgir de sus cenizas. Además, la
respuesta política a la decadencia de la ciudad no hizo sino empeorar las
cosas: los altos impuestos locales sobre la renta animaron a los
ciudadanos más ricos y a las empresas a marcharse de esa ciudad.
El autor recorre el pasado y extrapola las claves que convienen a la
ciudad, desde lo más global a lo más concreto: una cadena de montaje es
una idea destructora de conocimientos. Así como las tecnologías de la
información parecen multiplicar los beneficios de la inteligencia —
individual y colectiva—, las máquinas reducen la necesidad de ingenio
humano y producen el efecto contrario. Los trabajadores del sector del
automóvil fueron muy productivos sin necesidad de ser diestros en su
materia. Las grandes fábricas de automóviles se convirtieron en sinónimo
de estancamiento y marcadamente antitéticas a las virtudes urbanas de la
competencia y la comunicación. Otra clave que desvela el autor es que
edificar no es un remedio. Es una consecuencia del éxito, no su causa, por
lo tanto se convierte en una insensatez construir de más en una ciudad en
decadencia.

Lacras y placeres

Las ciudades son positivas para los inmigrantes y los inmigrantes son
beneficiosos para las ciudades. La familia Kennedy es un caso
paradigmático: Boston sacó a la luz los talentos de Patrick Kennedy de un
modo que la Irlanda rural, su ciudad originaria, no habría podido. No hay
que juzgar a las zonas geográficas por su pobreza, sino por su historial a la
hora de impulsar a sus ciudadanos más pobres para ascender en la escala
social. Sin embargo, el éxodo de minorías cualificadas ha convertido a los
guetos en lugares peores para los hijos de los que se quedan atrás. En este
sentido, las políticas públicas de asistencia a los menos favorecidos
pueden provocar una acumulación masiva de escasez.

La densidad permite la propagación de ideas, pero también de
enfermedades y delincuencia. Las ciudades necesitan gobiernos enérgicos
y competentes que garanticen higiene, seguridad y circulación fluida. La
delincuencia significa, en muchos casos, que los pobres se roban entre
ellos, por lo que no necesariamente se delinque hacia los más favorecidos.
Las ciudades son propensas al delito porque los que acuden a ellas llevan
consigo los problemas sociales propios de su condición y porque
presentan una densa concentración de víctimas potenciales: «es duro
ganarse la vida como ladrón en una carretera rural aislada». «Las
ciudades aumentan la influencia de los individuos (tanto para lo bueno
como para lo malo) y puesto que las opciones y los talentos de estos son
imprevisibles, fenómenos urbanos como las oleadas delictivas también son
difíciles de comprender».

En el otro extremo, los placeres urbanos contribuyen al éxito de
una ciudad. Lo dijo Samuel Johnson: «cuando un hombre está
cansado de Londres, está cansado de la vida, pues Londres tiene
todo lo que la vida puede brindar». El Nueva York del siglo XXI
es un lugar de esparcimiento para gente adinerada. Y, tanto para
lo bueno como para lo malo, hace mucho tiempo que las
ciudades vienen emancipando a la gente de las convenciones
sociales.

Construir o preservar.
El caso de París

El deseo de conservar el París histórico ha contribuido a
convertirla en una boutique sólo para acomodados. Cuando una
ciudad pone demasiadas trabas a la construcción, como es su
caso, corre el riesgo de estancarse y de que los precios
aumenten sin cesar. Es importante, pues, proteger la belleza urbana, pero
las ciudades no deben permanecer embalsamadas: uno de sus grandes
activos es la capacidad de crecimiento.

Glaeser subraya constantemente la idea de que las ciudades
sesustentan gracias a la comunicación entre sus habitantes. Hay ciertos
edificios, como los rascacielos, que facilitan esas interacciones. «Las
ciudades caras no construyen mucho y las ciudades que construyen
mucho no son caras». El crecimiento ayuda a que las más prósperas sigan
siéndolo y a que el precio del suelo permanezca asequible. Las limitaciones
de altura y la conservación del patrimonio histórico tienen un precio ya
que las áreas protegidas son más caras y más excluyentes, mientras que
los rascacielos son beneficiosos: «a esas alturas los costes bajan mucho».
La altura ya era barata en el XIX por la falta de ascensores, por eso los
artistas bohemios vivían en buhardillas con magníficas vistas.

«Hace un siglo, las perspectivas de desarrollo urbano eran
completamente distintas. París fue construida de arriba abajo. El
emperador tenía una visión, y su burócrata-barón la hizo realidad.
La línea del horizonte de Nueva York fue el producto de las
iniciativas independientes de miles de constructores relativamente
libres de trabas dispuestos a construir todo aquello que el
mercado pudiera soportar.

Nueva York era una jam session caótica pero espléndida en la que
unos músicos magníficos apenas prestaban atención a lo que
sucedía a su alrededor; París era una sinfonía meticulosamente
compuesta. El caos neoyorquino era más dinámico, pero el orden
parisino generaba edificios más seguros. En 1900, los incendios
eran mucho más frecuentes en las ciudades estadounidenses que
en Europa. En la actualidad es difícil sostener que nuevos
rascacielos podrían modificar de algún modo la gloria fundamental
de Nueva York. Ahora bien, en París los adversarios del cambio
disponen de un argumento mejor».

El Barón Haussmann, quiso despejar la maraña de callejuelas en las que
se cobijaban los revolucionarios y cuya estrechez les facilitaba la
colocación de barricadas sustituyéndolas por grandes avenidas que,
además de adornar, permitían el paso de la caballería y la artillería. «Si la
meta de la arquitectura es hacer feliz a la gente que la vive, la obra de
Haussmann tuvo un éxito clamoroso […] después de él, París se convirtió
en sinónimo de belleza urbana». La Défense, su barrio financiero de las
afueras, intenta ahora equilibrar la conservación y el crecimiento
segregando los rascacielos. Permite que la ciudad crezca mientras el
casco viejo permanece inmaculado. Pero el distrito no puede suplir la
ausencia de nuevas construcciones en el centro, donde, ahora, no puede
vivir la clase media debido a los elevados precios. En todo caso, la capital
de Francia es un caso extremo: su belleza justifica su excepcionalidad. Sin
embargo, la norma debe ser que complejos como La Défense se configuren
más cerca del centro.

Lo dicho anteriormente se puede comprobar también en la India,
concretamente en Bombay. En países en vías de desarrollo, los problemas
que causa la limitación de la altura son ciertamente graves. Perjudican a
la metrópolis más que contribuyen al progreso. La miseria, en
circunstancias como las del subcontinente, supone la muerte y por ello la
planificación territorial puede ser cuestión primaria. «Los fracasos
públicos de Bombay son tan notorios como sus éxitos privados. […] Las
limitaciones de altura no hacen sino obligar a la gente a hacinarse en
barriadas miserables e ilegales en lugar de en bloques de pisos legales. […]
La magia de las ciudades procede de sus habitantes, pero esos habitantes
tienen que estar bien servidos por el ladrillo y la argamasa que les
rodean». La altura es la mejor forma de garantizar que los precios sigan
siendo asequibles y el nivel de vida alto.

Contra la administración municipal, lo que él llama el
«imperialismo burocrático», el autor propone tres reglas sencillas para
defender a los motores económicos del planeta. 1) Un sistema sencillo
de tasas: «Si las construcciones de gran altura generan costes al
bloquear la luz o las vistas, entonces esos costes deberían calcularse
razonablemente y cobrarse de forma apropiada al constructor». 2) Una
bien definida limitación a la conservación de las ciudades: «Convertir
en parte del patrimonio una obra maestra como el edificio Flatiron o la
antigua estación de Penn es sensato; conservar enormes cantidades de
edificios de ladrillo vitrificado de posguerra es absurdo». 3) Poder de
cada barrio individual para proteger su carácter distintivo: «Quizá la
gente de ciertas manzanas quiera excluir la presencia de bares en ellas,
y los de otras todo lo contrario. En lugar de regular los barrios de
arriba abajo y hasta el último detalle, tendría más sentido permitir que
estos diseñen, dentro de unos límites razonables, sus propias normas
en lo que se refiere a los estilos de construcción y las costumbres,
normas que solo se adoptarían si las aprueba una proporción muy
grande de sus habitantes».

Urbanizaciones periféricas

l automóvil, el transporte propio de la segunda mitad del siglo
XX, ha generado el efecto de la dispersión urbana, fomentada
además por las políticas públicas. En su origen, los vehículos
suelen atravesar tres fases: descubrimiento tecnológico, nueva
red de transporte para dar impulso al avance y el posterior
desplazamiento de la gente y las empresas. En este sentido y en el caso
concreto del automóvil se dieron primero las cadenas de montaje, luego
las autopistas y como consecuencia el traslado a zonas periféricas. Todas
estas innovaciones requerían cierta actividad peatonal como el
desplazamiento a pie a la estación de tren o a la parada del autobús; con el
coche cambió la dinámica radicalmente. La raíz de la expansión
territorial, en su sentido más pernicioso, no está en la cultura sino en los
automóviles.

Otro elemento clave es la propiedad. Su fomento es,
paradójicamente, una práctica que va en contra del equilibrio social. La
gran mayoría de los que viven en pisos en Estados Unidos alquilan las
viviendas; mientras que los que habitan residencias unifamiliares son
dueños. Cuando el gobierno anima a sus ciudadanos a comprar los
domicilios, les está empujando a abandonar la ciudad. La dispersión
urbana acarrea costes. La conclusión recurrente de Glaeser es que es
mejor y más ventajoso para el planeta y su sociedad que ésta viva en
núcleos densos construidos en torno al ascensor antes que en áreas de
expansión descontrolada construidas en torno al automóvil.

La ciudad, la jungla de asfalto, es más ecológica que el campo. Todo
el que esté preocupado por el calentamiento global debería tener presente
que la densidad de la vida urbana es una variable clave para hallar la
solución del posible cambio climático. Lo que aumenta la contaminación
es el consumo de combustible en los kilómetros recorridos, no la eficiencia
de los automóviles. Es evidente que los habitantes de las grandes ciudades
conducen menos que los de las áreas residenciales. Por su densidad, al
estar concentrada, Nueva York es, por ejemplo, una de las ciudades más
verdes de Estados Unidos. «Sospecho que a largo plazo el romance del
siglo XX con la vida en los barrios residenciales nos parecerá más una
aberración que una pauta».

El autor analiza

fomentó los edificios altos
y el transporte de masas,
que el ecologismo rural y
tradicional del príncipe
Carlos de Inglaterra. Las personas que viven en el medio rural no se
comportan ya como campesinos del siglo XV; de hecho consumen
demasiada gasolina y electricidad.
Pero la batalla más importante en este asunto se librará en los
próximos años en India y China, más que en Estados Unidos. Para
convencer a sus habitantes de que sean razonables en su consumo habrá
que dar ejemplo e imponer normas. El autor propone una tasa por
consumo de carbono como único medio para que la gente consuma menos
gasolina. Si el futuro tiene que ser «verde», entonces tendrá que ser más
urbano. La metáfora es paradójica pero real: no hay nada más verde que el asfalto.

Éxitos y fracasos

En el caso de las ciudades del mundo, los fracasos son semejantes y los
éxitos muy distintos (aunque con algo en común: atraen a personas
inteligentes y les permiten colaborar entre ellas). Los caminos a la
prosperidad pueden seguir el modelo de Tokio (centro político de un país
próspero y centralizado, con una inmensa aglomeración de actividad
política, económica y ociosa; una suerte de combinación de Washington y
Nueva York). También hay que mirar hacia Hong Kong y Singapur, cuyas
instituciones políticas atrajeron, y atraen, al capital humano, ofreciendo a
las empresas un gobierno mejor que el de los Estados vecinos, un sector
público muy competente. En las ciudades más pobres del mundo, la
prosperidad suele ser consecuencia de instituciones políticas decentes e
inversiones en educación. Un ejemplo típico de éxito por la inversión en
educación es la ciudad de Boston.

Edward Glaeser concluye el libro reiterando su elogio de la
ciudad: «La especie humana es profundamente social. Del mismo
modo que las colonias de hormigas consiguen hacer cosas que
están muy por encima de las capacidades de un insecto aislado,
las ciudades son capaces de hacer cosas que están muy por
encima de las capacidades de un ser humano aislado. Las
ciudades facilitan la colaboración, sobre todo en lo referente a la
producción conjunta del conocimiento, la creación más
importante de la humanidad […] Las ciudades hacen más fácil
observar, escuchar y aprender. Dado que la característica
fundamental de la humanidad es nuestra capacidad de aprender
de los demás, las ciudades nos humanizan más […] Comunicarse
por el ciberespacio nunca será lo mismo; nuestra especie aprende
sobre todo de las claves auditivas, visuales y olfativas que emiten
nuestros congéneres».

Y pone un nuevo, y en este caso último, ejemplo: la Viena del XVIII, en la
que Haydn comunica sus ideas sinfónicas a Mozart y a Beethoven. Esas
cadenas de innovación artística se parecen mucho a otras más prosaicas,
como la que une a los bonos basura con las adquisiciones de empresas
mediante emisiones de deuda y los valores con respaldo hipotecario.

5th IABR: Making City

Opening 5th IABR: Making City: Thursday 19 April 2012 at the Netherlands Architecture Institute.

The 5th IABR: Making City explores the making of tomorrow’s city and the new alliances between designers, politicians and other stakeholders. The world is urbanizing at a rapid rate and this presents us with a huge political, social, economic and ecological challenge. These challenges become manifest in our cities, and it is therefore in cities where we have to build new alliances and find the answers and the solutions. The city can be the bridge to a better future, but only if it is better planned, designed and managed than it is at present.

Making City explores future urban scenarios and, in the process, puts design first. 33 projects from over 25 global cities - ranging from New York, Paris, São Paulo, Istanbul and Delhi to Rotterdam, The Hague, Groningen and Almere - will be presented in the main exhibition Making City at the NAI in Rotterdam from 20 April to 12 August 2012. In addition, four other exhibitions will take place in Rotterdam: I / We / You Make Rotterdam on and around the Test Site Rotterdam (the Schieblock and its immediate surroundings, the Rotterdam Central District and Mini Mall area); the travelling exhibition Making Douala 2007-2013 at the Schieblock; Smart Cities - Parallel Cases 2 at the NAI; and the exhibition Design as Politics at Mini Mall organized by Delft University of Technology.

Making Almere will take place in the city of Almere while later in the year Making City exhibitions will open in Istanbul and São Paulo. The program of the 5th IABR also includes an Urban Summit and a series of conferences, debates and lectures.

Un artículo polémico sobre mobile learning

El inicio de el debate del foro se efectúa con un enlace -muy crítico con el m-learning- de Iñigo Babot fallecido recientemente:

Últimamente se publican una gran cantidad de notas sobre el futuro del mLearning. Algunas de ellas, podemos verlas en medios tan diferentes y sumamente interesantes como America Learning Media, otra más de América Learning Media, AEFOL o el buen post de Aníbal de la Torre.

Yo mismo he hablado de ello, dos veces, en la primera publicación (ver notas en ambos links).

Una vez más, la tecnología debe estar al servicio del aprendizaje y no al revés. Hay que usar el canal mejor (sea eLearning, presencial, mLearning, podcast, etc.), bien pensado, para los contenidos que se pretende enseñar (factuales, conceptuales, procedimentales o actitudinales), los objetivos de aprendizaje, los objetivos corporativos, sin olvidar, por supuesto, los objetivos económico financieros. Y ya está. Eso hacemos y recomendamos a todos nuestros clientes de Plan Director de Formación Corporativa, proyectos, estrategia, análisis de necesidades, etc.

El mLearning será una tecnología importante y crecerá, no cabe duda, integrada en una oferta Blended. Como todas. Y si pretendemos estudiar todo en movimiento, no iremos bien porque no se puede.

En nuestra consultora, acabamos de realizar un profundo informe para una compañía global de telecomunicaciones, en el que se han tratado todos los aspectos, sectores y sub – sectores de la enseñanza virtual y la Web 2.0 (redes sociales, blogs, plataformas colaborativas y el llamado social learning, en general). En esta investigación, hemos consultado a 71 expertos de 4 continentes, realizado focus groups en Europa, Estados Unidos y África, así como compilado información de numerosos equipos de research de universidades mundialmente conocidas.

Con todos estos datos, hemos realizado un gran informe confidencial (pues ha sido contratado en exclusiva por este cliente).

¿Qué nos contaron todos estos 71 gurús, acerca del mLearning? Muy poquito, la verdad: mucho ruido y pocas nueces. No pretendo molestar a ningún lector interesado en vivir de este tema: simplemente me limito a relatar lo que nos han explicado primeras figuras mundiales en estas materias.
El resumen es que el mLearning en smartphones irá creciendo poco a poco, pero hoy se utiliza aún muy escasamente (por supuesto, los teléfonos inteligentes se usan muchísimo y su introducción crece exponencialmente pero no para estudiar, sino para hablar, navegar o consultar información muy breve y factual), mientras que el mLearning en tablets, gracias al gran formato de estos, es tan asimilable al eLearning y tan indisociable de él que, en numerosos estudios, se cita conjuntamente con el término ‘e/mLearning’.

Metodológicamente y desde un punto de vista riguroso, el mLearning es también muy similar al eLearning. Es un hermano menor, con menos funcionalidades, pero se nutre tanto de la enseñanza virtual para PC, que a veces no pueden diferenciarse.

En primer lugar mi mas sentido homenaje póstumo a Iñigo. Me gustaría unirme plenamente a la idea que toda restricción tecnológica es mala, me refiero a ello cuando el software o plataforma se efectúa de manera única o con un soporte obligado. Hoy en día y dado la magnitud de herramientas no solo de autor sino propiamente audiovisuales que nos habitúan a su uso en función de las múltiples circunstancias del autor u usuario, seria contraproducente marcar diferencias para exponer o formar a otros.

Por otra parte, también de acuerdo en que llamar de manera exclusiva eLearning o mLearning, incluso blenden learning es un todo, universal que no se puede detraer de la realidad. Habrá personas que les será mas útil el mLearning porque un postcast les será útil mientras viajan en el tren de cercanías todos los días hacia su trabajo. A otros hacer un test o leer un pdf necesariamente lo tendrán que hacer en su PC, por su propia selección de comodidad, necesidad, interés preferente o gusto. A mi modo de ver estamos fragmentando en exceso y ello origina una cierta incertidumbre.
La selección de los soportes debe ser de acuerdo a los contenidos y la inversión efectuada. Muchas veces un breve vídeo explicativo puede dar lugar a mas reflexiones que una animación que ha costado un porcentaje importante del presupuesto. Quizás la idea es fragmentar y aplicar la diversidad al objeto de que el usuario no caiga en la monotonía, pero querer sustituir una clase presencial por un simple vídeo o un pdf (ladrillo tal y como define Iñigo las infinitas paginaciones de teorías y mas teorías) es hartamente antipedagógico.

Otra cuestión seria analizar cuando es absolutamente necesaria esa presencia y para que materias es irrenunciable.

Estudie varios cursos de arquitectura en una universidad publica siendo ya un "chavalito" adulto (45 años) y pensé en las barreras de tiempo, espacio y economía de medios para gente que nos interesaba estas materias y no podíamos tener el rigor de estar atento a mil datos e intercambio de información como se daba de manera espontanea entre los miembros de una clase. Lo cierto y verdad es que la información dispersa sobre un curso de arquitectura difícilmente se podría traducir en un curso online ya que esta fragmentada hasta la saciedad y hay una especie de interés porque el estudiante busque y se informe.

Esta fragmentación e inconcreción hace que la iniciativa auto formativa en un % corresponda al estudiante y es por eso que subir a una plataforma la pedagogía de clases de arquitectura es muy trabajoso y según algunos poco pedagógico, ya que ejecución y diseño de un proyecto trata de unir partes fragmentadas y de ahí el interés en su practica. Con el riesgo arto frecuente de convertir al alumnos en un muñeco roto.

Investigando en otras metodologías pedagógicas existen modelos que son ampliamente asumibles y que aquí en España son descartables en base a que nuestro modelo es irrenunciable, es el propio, por ejemplo de Canadá o EEUU , para personas que obstan por trabajar mientras estudian, que se basa en el blended learning y el ejercicio profesional en practicas en un despacho de un arquitecto. Es un modelo triple, por un lado la constante formación online, por otra la presencial a través de work-shops y la propia practica real en un despacho.

El modelo aunque pueda parecer revolucionario, es el mismo que se produce en el sector de la arquitectura en España pero de manera extraoficial y piramidal. Es decir, a los estudiantes se les hace trabajar en estudios a precio de saldo y sin regulación especifica, aprovechando los patrones de los jóvenes estudiantes en sus mejores años mas productivos y mas creativos a precios de semi esclavitud, después el soporte de la escuelas de arquitectura, que se asemejan a la cultura heredada de los cuarteles, hace que los estudiantes no puedan atender la pedagogía de las clases y se tienda a crear un hartazgo, por la materias reiterativas, improductivas o retoricas; finalmente la parte presencial -a no ser que hayas tenido mucha suerte- se produce entre un profesor con falta de vocación que se siente igualmente "puteado" por el sueldo de risa que le pagan por dar esa clase.

El caldo de cultivo en este ejemplo esta servido para provocar un circulo vicioso, si a esto le unimos que la única forma de ser punta de lanza social (para ser intermediario entre el conocimiento y el usuario) para el aprendiz es investigando. Para ello hace falta inversión y que la mayoría de los presupuestos se hacen para llegar a conclusiones vanas en equipos que no provocan el mas mínimo interés nacional ni internacional (hay excepciones), entonces nos daremos cuenta de que los mecanismos siguen sin funcionar...y la única salida sería la educación privada por fracaso de la publica....

Ya hay una iniciativa de la U. Nebrija para implantar el Grado de Arquitectura en blended learning, algo que hasta hace poco y de modo genérico se consideraba imposible. Creo que es un buen laboratorio para investigar los cambios que se avecinan y las posibilidades amplias en un sector considerado limitado hasta hace poco.

Ha sido un momento difícil para la profesión. Los proyectos han quedado en suspenso, los despidos han sido implacables y la industria estancada nos puso a todos en el borde. Dejando a un lado los datos te darás cuenta de que, independientemente de la economía, trabajamos en la industria que sigue siendo admirado en todo el mundo. Extrañamente, admirado por casi todos, menos por las mismas personas que la crean. Este Día de San Valentín es el momento para nosotros para volver a enamorarse.

Deja el café por un momento y pasar unos minutos recordándose a sí mismo porqué te gusta la arquitectura y, si te sientes tan atrevido, que el mundo lo sepa. Podría tratarse de un edificio en el que trabajé, un cliente que te hizo pensar de manera diferente o una comunidad que ha ayudado a transformar. Podría ser el trabajo de un compañero practicante o tal vez un gran espacio que te inspiró para convertirte en la persona que eres hoy.

Yo lo sabía cuando tenía seis años de edad. Cuando era niño solía deambular por los confines sombríos del sur de Londres, de vez en cuando abandonaba la escuela para descubrir las bien pensadas estructuras y espacios públicos que dieron vida a una comunidad. Una década más tarde, mientras que trabajaba en mi primera empresa, me enamoré con el proceso y los obstáculos enormes que tardaba en convertir un sueño a la realidad. En los últimos años noventa mi carrera dio un giro a la izquierda y en los últimos trece años he sido parte de un movimiento centrado en la participación de los conocimientos y la experiencia de la industria para las comunidades menos favorecidas. Todos los días se llegan a verme arquitectos, ingenieros y constructores que trabajamos juntos en la configuración del entorno para el mejoramiento de los demás. A pesar de que algunos en nuestra profesión, dicen que no es trabajo fácil, pero es fácil saber porqué mis arquitectos le encanta la arquitectura. Ellos lo ven todos los días y gracias a ellos, igual que yo.

En la profesión de la arquitectura muy pocos de nosotros llega a perforar el cielo con nuestras creaciones, o la oportunidad de galvanizar a la comunidad después de la tragedia o la lucha. La mayoría trabaja en los lugares en los que viven y pasan la mayor parte de nuestras carreras tratando de dar forma a ese ambiente. Nos importa un bledo pulgadas y más sobre el impacto. Un verdadero profesional saben cuando han hecho un gran trabajo y sigue a comprometerse a nuevos niveles de logro. En las raras ocasiones se llega a ser parte de un edificio que despierta el deseo y la admiración en los corazones y las mentes de nuestros semejantes. Esa es la esencia del arquitecto.
Así que hoy, hay que dar un paso atrás para darse cuenta lo que es el trabajo increíble que tenemos. Un arquitecto no es un artista, sino un optimismo realista. Trabajar con un número diverso de partes interesadas, el arquitecto necesita los extractos, la preocupación, y los sueños, para crear una solución bonita pero tangible que sea amada por los usuarios y la comunidad en general. Nuestro trabajo tiene la capacidad para llevar a cabo vidas de miles de millones, y en lugar de cínicamente la lucha contra uno con el otro para el 1% permite trabajar juntos para restaurar el orgullo de la profesión y encontrar formas de llevar un gran diseño para los siete millones de personas en todo ese tiempo para grandes espacios para vivir, trabajar y jugar.

It has been a tough time for the profession. Projects have been put on hold, layoffs have been unrelenting and a stagnant industry has put us all on edge. Putting aside the data you’ll realize that regardless of the economy we work in the one industry that continues to be admired the world over. Strangely, admired by almost everyone except by the very people that create it. This Valentine’s Day it is time for us to fall in love again.

Put down the coffee for a moment and spend minutes reminding yourself why you love architecture and, if you feel so bold, let the world know. It could be a building you worked on, a client who made you think differently or a community you’ve helped to transform. It could be the work of a fellow practitioner or perhaps a great space that inspired you to become the person you are today.

I knew when I was six years old. As a kid I used to wander off from the bleak concrete confines of South London, even occasionally ditch school to discover well thought out structures and public spaces that brought life to a community. A decade later while interning for my first firm, I became enamored with the process and the huge hurdles it took to turn a dream to reality. In the late Nineties my career took a left turn and for the past thirteen years I’ve been part of a movement focused on engaging the expertise and experience of the industry for those less fortunate and in communities similar to the one I was brought up in. Every day I get to see architects, engineers and builders working together shaping the environment for the betterment of others. Despite what some in our profession say it is not easy work but it is easy to tell why my architects love architecture. They see it every day and thanks to them, so do I.

In the profession of architecture very few of us get to pierce the skies with our creations or get the opportunity to galvanize a community after tragedy or strife. The majority work in the places we live and spend the better part of our careers trying to shape that environment. We care less about inches and more about impact. A true professional know when they have done a great job and continues to push themselves to new levels of achievement. On the rare occasion we get to be apart of a building that stirs desire and wonderment in the hearts and minds of our fellow man. That is the essence of the architect.

So today, take a step back to realize what an incredible job we have. An architect is not an artist but an optimistic realist. Working with a diverse number of stakeholders, the architect extracts need, concern, and dreams, to create a beautiful yet tangible solution that is loved by the users and the community at large. Our work has the ability to effect the lives of billions and rather than cynically fighting with each other for the 1% lets work together to restore the pride of the profession and find ways to bring great design for the seven billion people that long for great spaces to live, work and play.

For the next 4 months we are running an “I Love Architecture” Campaign and I hope you can join us. My name is Cameron and I love architecture.

13th Architecture Biennale from 29 August to 25 November 2012

The President of the Biennale di Venezia, Paolo Baratta, accompanied by the Director of the 13th International Architecture Exhibition, David Chipperfield, met today at Ca’ Giustinian with the representatives of the 41 Countries participating in the 13th Exhibition, which will take place from 29 August to 25 November 2012 at the Giardini and at the Arsenale (Preview on 27 and 28 August 2012) and in various other venues in Venice. The meeting was attended for the first time by the representatives of Kosovo, Kuwait and Peru.

The title chosen by David Chipperfield for the 13th International Architecture Exhibition is: Common Ground.
“I want this Biennale to celebrate a vital, interconnected architectural culture, and pose questions about the intellectual and physical territories that it shares. In the methods of selection of participants, my Biennale will encourage the collaboration and dialogue that I believe is at the heart of architecture, and the title will also serve as a metaphor for architecture's field of activity.
I am interested in the things that architects share in common, from the conditions of the practice of architecture to the influences, collaborations, histories and affinities that frame and contextualise our work. I want to take the opportunity of the Biennale to reinforce our understanding of architectural culture, and to emphasise the philosophical and practical continuities that define it.
The title ‘Common Ground’ also has a strong connotation of the ground between buildings, the spaces of the city. I want projects in the Biennale to look seriously at the meanings of the spaces made by buildings: the political, social, and public realms of which architecture is a part. I do not want to lose the subject of architecture in a morass of sociological, psychological or artistic speculation, but to try to develop the understanding of the distinct contribution that architecture can make in defining the common ground of the city.

This theme is a deliberate act of resistance towards the image of architecture propagated in much of today's media of projects springing fully formed from the minds of individual talents. I wish to promote the fact that architecture is internally connected, intellectually and practically, sharing common concerns, influences and intentions.

My method of selecting architects will reinforce the theme by making collaboration and dialogue fundamental to the Biennale. We will invite contributors to make a proposals for exhibits or installations but also ask them to propose others they want to collaborate with. In this way, the initial selection by the curatorial team is complemented by a further series of relationships initiated by selected architects.

The proposed dialogues will hopefully cross boundaries of age, style, geography and discipline. They also might identify the critical roles of other parts of architectural culture: the media, research institutions, schools, publishers, galleries, foundations and so on. The results, I hope, will use every available medium to tell stories about the common ground of the profession, and of the city.
My intention is to make neither an exclusive selection of projects on the basis of prejudice and taste, nor an uncritically inclusive exhibition. We wish to give the participants an opportunity to explain work within the wider context of architectural practice, not only as a demonstration of their own talent, but also to unite us in defining our ambitions and responsibilities.”

“By appointing Kazuyo Sejima we brought the Exhibition back into the hands of an architect – President Paolo Baratta has said – and we are now so lucky to have David Chipperfield with us. The Biennale exhibitions in recent years had broadened the representation of architecture by emphasizing its connections with a series of big social, urban, environmental and political ‘issues’. So it appeared useful to turn to an architect who demonstrates great interest in architecture as a discipline and raises questions about the elements of which it is composed, about the objectives it pursues, about the constraints that affect it, about the tools that it uses to shape places, spaces, buildings. The next Architecture Exhibition will be characterized by the emphasis on a series of relationships that connect great architects and younger generations that refer to them. This Exhibition will represent a major opportunity to bring both the general public and the world of architecture up to date. This is also why it has already begun to organize the program involving Universities from all around the world, titled Biennale Sessions, successfully tested during the last edition of the Exhibition.”
The 13th International Architecture Exhibition of the Biennale di Venezia will also present, as is traditional, the National Participations with their own exhibitions in the Pavilions at the Giardini and at the Arsenale, and in the historic city centre of Venice.
This edition will also include selected Collateral Events, presented by international entities and institutions, which will present their exhibitions and initiatives in Venice concurrently with the 13th Exhibition.

Tras la Arquitectura: El hombre de al lado en Tramallol Coop

Ayer fuimos invitados en el ciclo “Tras la Arquitectura” que organiza el arquitecto Dario Mateo en la Nave Tramallol a ver la película El Hombre de al lado (2009) de Mariano Cohn y Gastón Duprat. En este espacio se reúnen en forma de trabajo en cooworking un grupo de profesionales, artesanos, diseñadores y creativos en Sevilla. Entre ellos hay arquitectos, diseñadores, cocineros, encuadernadores y un largo etc.

Mi debilidad por la películas Argentinas me viene de mis tiempos en el año 97 en Buenos Aires y siempre pensé que el cine que allí se fragua es enormemente creativo y si se quiere con un ratio calidad-presupuesto inmejorable.

El hombre de al lado narra un conflicto entre vecinos que parece no tener fin. Una simple pared medianera puede dividir dos mundos, dos maneras de vestir, de comer, de vivir. De un lado Leonardo (Rafael Spregelburd), fino y prestigioso diseñador que vive en una casa realizada por Le Corbusier. Del otro lado Víctor (Daniel Aráoz), vendedor de coches usados, vulgar, rústico y avasallador. Víctor decide hacer una ventana para tener más luz, y ahí empieza el problema: cada uno toma conciencia de la existencia del otro.

Esta sencilla premisa, cuyo significado es más que evidente, da pie a un interesante estudio de las diferencias entre dos personalidades muy marcadas y de cómo una insignificancia puede trastocar la vida de algunas personas, acostumbradas a tenerlo todo, hasta el punto de no permitirles continuar con normalidad con su existencia. Una crítica contra el autoaislamiento, el elitismo y el inmovilismo se deja ver sin disimulos a través de esta película, tan minimalista como la decoración que su protagonista propugna, que es más una situación que una historia.

Dario nos remitió un texto muy interesante con el objeto de centrar el debate posterior: La casa bella, estética, identidad, poder y distorsión de metas en la vivienda social. Del libro de Victor Saul Pelli.

En “La casa bella” se exhiben las relaciones entre estética, identidad y poder en torno a la vivienda de interés social. Se afirma el derecho del habitante a ser partícipe directo de la definición de su vivienda, incluyendo la definición estética. Se plantea superar el rol del arquitecto diseñador de firma o para la fotografía de la obra, por uno en que la relación personalizada y horizontal con el habitante enriquezcan el resultado final del trabajo, avanzando en la construcción de equidad en las decisiones sobre calidad de la vivienda, incluyendo en este caso, las expresiones estéticas.

Este libro es un conjunto de trabajos desarrollados desde los años 90, sobre ideas que son clave para encarar el problema habitacional de los sectores en situación de pobreza estructural, con las características con que se presenta en Argentina desde aproximadamente mediados del siglo XX.
¿Hasta qué punto la noción convencional de vivienda es adecuada para internarse en el problema? Está muy lejos de ser un juego intelectual, más bien se trata de intentar ver las ideas clave con rasgos más auténticos y fiables. Complementariamente, una convicción bien arraigada fue llevando a incorporar los criterios que conceden espacios jerarquizados a los habitantes, en todos los pasos de la gestión de solución de sus necesidades; en este caso las habitacionales.
Esta obra, lejos de plantearse como una aproximación imparcial, es una exploración desde una toma de posición sobre el papel que juega la producción del hábitat en la construcción o en la reconstrucción de la relación entre los que carecen de vivienda adecuada y la sociedad en su conjunto. Desde esta posición, el abordaje del problema habitacional se desplaza desde la idea convencional de "provisión de casas", e incluso desde la más amplia de "provisión de vivienda", hacia la idea de generación de acciones y de obras que conduzcan a una inserción armónica, incluyente y equitativa de la gente en la ciudad y en el conjunto social. Este libro intenta ser un aporte en esa dirección.

ACFX Conference 2012 International Summit – Architecture Corporate Foresight Conference

MEGACITIES | URBAN ENVIRONMENT

Lectures by Assaf Biderman on the subject of the development and spread of megacities, by Dr. Wolfgang Keßling, who explores the climatic aspects, techniques and geographical environments of contemporary building, and by Jürgen Mayer H., winner of the Audi Urban Future Awards, will offer answers to these questions.

TREND RESEARCH
What will the architectural trends of the future look like? Which materials will be implemented? Will I be able to operate my computer telepathically - or maybe even use apps to market my products more successfully? Such questions will be answered by Lidewij Edelkoort (among others), a world renown trend researcher. Li Edelkoort produces trend books which - boasting forecasts for two years – are used as design tools by strategists, designers and those responsible for marketing international brands. In addition, Sebastian Raßmann from Trendone will be showing how brands can be communicated to consumers at lightning speed using various channels. Robert Miles Kemp, president of Variate Labs, will present examples of his interactive architecture and show just how futuristic his daily routine already is.

START UPS
Networks are the key to success. Frederike Vos demonstrates just this with ‘The Hub’, an office concept which she co-developed and which is already to be found on every continent in a total of 28 cities: the world as a workplace. And then there’s Florian Gschwandtner, who will be presenting his fitness platform ‘runtastic’ and the potential of an app: how to motivate his platform users to actively shape and improve his own product. Gschwandtner tells us how it’s done.

FUTURE WORKING & LIVING
The final block will be headed by experts who grapple with the homes, life and work of the future.
These include Bjarke Ingels, who gets to grips with the evolution of architecture with methods, processes and tools, and Dr. Alexander Rieck from the Fraunhofer Institute, who has not only developed the hotel room of the future, but who also regards the working world of the 21st century as a hot topic. Desde ArchMedium nos remiten la siguiente convocatoria de concurso de arquitectura para su difusión.

ArchMedium es un proyecto dedicado a la organización de concursos para estudiantes que cuenta con la colaboración de la Universidad Politécnica de Catalunya y la Escola técnica superior d’ arquitectura de Barcelona ETSAB.

INTRODUCCIÓN
La contaminación es un problema que afecta a todos los países del mundo, pero sobre todo a las grandes metrópolis a raíz de la gran concentración de vehículos de combustión en áreas relativamente reducidas. Brasil es sin lugar a dudas uno de los principales países emergentes de principios del s.XXI, y cuenta con un ambicioso plan de desarrollo que le permitirá seguir creciendo de forma sostenible y ecológica.
La transformación de Río ya ha comenzado y la ciudad se prepara para recibir millones de personas a raíz de los eventos deportivos más grandes del mundo, el mundial de futbol de 2014 y los juegos olímpicos de Río 2016.

EMPLAZAMIENTO
El solar elegido para el desarrollo de este proyecto se ubica en un punto privilegiado de Ipanema, uno de los barrios más representativos y vanguardistas de Río de Janeiro. Famoso por sus playas y su paseo marítimo, es uno de los barrios más adelantados de Río y con la clara voluntad de apostar por el desarrollo sostenible. En este contexto, la inserción de los vehículos eléctricos y la creación de la nueva red de recarga cuenta con mayores posibilidades de aceptación y éxito de las que tendría en cualquier otro barrio de la ciudad.
El stcRIO se ubica en una posición estratégica en Ipanema, entre la playa y la plaza Gral Osorio. La plaza es el punto de llegada a Ipanema desde el centro (L1) y el inicio de la linea de metro que llegará a la zona olímpica de Barra de Tijuca (L4). El stcRIO actúa como punto de quiebre entre el centro y la nueva parte sur de la ciudad: RÍO2016.

PROPUESTA
stcRIO propone una fuerte apuesta de la ciudad con la introducción de vehículos eléctricos, convirtiéndolos en el medio de transporte estándar para sus habitantes y educándolos indirectamente en materia de sostenibilidad.
La apuesta irá encabezada por la creación de la infraestructura necesaria para extender una red de puntos de recarga para vehículos eléctricos (o electrolineras)por su área metropolitana. El stcRIO será un centro de operaciones para esta nueva infraestructura desde donde se controlará el estado y funcionamiento de toda la red.
El objetivo global de esta nueva apuesta no es sólo el de renovar y actualizar el parque automotor, sino algo mucho más ambicioso como es lograr la integración total de la red de recarga con las demás redes de transporte público de la ciudad, creando una red de transporte eficiente y dinámica que permita a los usuaríos desplazarse de un barrío a otro de la ciudad de forma rápida, segura y eficaz, haciendo uso de los distintos medios a su disposición.

La convocatoria es pública y está abierta a todos los estudiantes de grado y postgrado, así como a jóvenes profesionales con 5 años de experiencia o menos, tanto de Arquitectura como de ramas relacionadas; Ingeniería, Urbanismo, Diseño, etc. que puedan acreditar mediante algún documento oficial (matricula, carnet de estudiante, título etc.) que el día en que da comienzo el concurso cumplen con las condiciones previamente mencionadas.

David Chipperfield curator de la XIII Bienal de Venecia 2012

Según han adelantado algunas publicaciones inglesas de fuentes solventes como The Guardian, David Chipperfield será el próximo director de la XIII Bienal de Venecia del 2012. Se trata del primer ingles que dirige esta muestra en su sección oficial.

David Chipperfield, arquitecto británico, nacido en Londres en 1953.

Estudió arquitectura en la Architectural Association School of Architecture de Londres, licenciándose en 1977. En el período 1978-1984 trabajó con arquitectos como Douglas Stephen, Richard Rogers o Norman Foster, estableciendo su propio estudio David Chipperfield Architects en 1984. Tiene oficinas principales en Londres, Berlín y Milán y una oficina de representación en Shanghái.

Su arquitectura suele englobarse dentro de la corriente estilística conocida como minimalismo. Ha desarrollado su labor en edificación y urbanismo, así como en diseño de muebles e interiores. Ha sido ganador de diversos premios, entre ellos ha obtenido varias veces el premio "RIBA" (Royal Institute for British Arquitects) por diferentes obras, destacando museos, galerías de arte, bibliotecas, casas privadas, hoteles u oficinas.

En 1999, David Chipperfield fue galardonado con la Medalla de Oro Heinrich Tessenow, lo que fue seguido por una exposición de su obra junto con la del Tessenow-Stipendiat de 1998, el arquitecto español Andrés Jaque.

En 2000 fue uno de los arquitectos que representaron a Gran Bretaña en la Bienal de Arquitectura de Venecia. En 2003 fue elegido Miembro Honorario de la Academia de Arte y Diseño de Florencia. En 2004 fue nombrado Comendador de la Orden del Imperio Británico (CBE) por los servicios prestados a la arquitectura.

También ha sido profesor de diseño en diferentes escuelas de arquitectura del Reino Unido y profesor invitado en varias universidades extranjeras europeas y estadounidenses.

Chipperfield fue el único arquitecto británico seleccionado para diseñar la Tate Modern. Diseñó y consiguió el Premio RIBA en la categoría de Arquitectura para el Ocio y las Artes para su Museo Fluvial y del Remo de Henley-on-Thames, una de sus obras más apreciadas, donde utilizó revestimientos de roble, hormigón y cristal.

En Japón ha proyectado la sede de la corporación Matsumoto, en Okayama, el Museo Gotoh de Tokio o la sede de Toyota Auto, en Kioto (Premio Andrea Palladio de 1993).

En Alemania, diseñó el Plan general de viviendas de Maselakekanal en Berlín (ganador del concurso de 1994), el Museo de Literatura Moderna (2002-2006) en Marbach am Neckar (Premio Stirling 2007), el edificio de oficinas Kaiserstrasse de Düsseldorf, la Galería Hinter dem Giesshaus 1, en Berlin o el Neues Museum, también en Berlín, que se inauguró en octubre de 2009.

En España ha proyectado Casa de vacaciones (1996-2002) en Corrubedo, la Ciudad de la Justicia de Barcelona (2002-2009), Viviendas en Villanueva y Geltrú y Hospitalet de Llobregat, Remodelación del Paseo del Óvalo (2001-2003) en Teruel (Premio Europeo al Espacio Urbano Público), Viviendas sociales en Villaverde (2000-2005) en Madrid, Pabellón Copa de América (2005-2006) en Valencia, Palacio de Congresos de Vigo, Diseño de la planta tercera del Hotel Puerta América (2003-2005) en Madrid y en desarrollo desde 2007 el Centro de Exposiciones y Congresos de Aranjuez.

En Estados Unidos, en 2005, completó el Figge Art Museum en Davenport, Iowa, la Biblioteca Pública Central en Des Moines, Iowa, encargada en 2001 o el Hotel Bryant Park y la Lever House, en Nueva York. Los proyectos actuales incluyen la ampliación del Museo de Anchorage en Anchorage, Alaska.

En Italia, Cementerio de San Michele en Venecia (1998), Ciudad de las Culturas de Ansaldo en Milán (2000), Palacio de Justicia de Salerno y en Portugal están en desarrollo cuatro villas junto al lago en Bom Sucesso Design Resort, Portugal.

WAF Awards Day Two Category Winners Announced at World Architecture Festival Awards 2011

Four completed buildings and nine future projects, celebrating designs still on the drawing board, from around the world have today been announced as winners on the second day of the World Architectural Festival (WAF) Awards 2011.

The presentation of the WAF Awards is taking place during the largest global celebration of architecture - the World Architecture Festival, which is being held in Barcelona (CCIB) this week.

Speaking at the WAF Awards 2011 Paul Finch, WAF Programme Director, said: “The World Architecture Festival is the world's largest, live, truly inclusive and interactive global architectural awards programme. Attracting entries from internationally renowned practices to small local architects, the stellar quality of this year’s designs demonstrates their commitment to designing the world’s most exciting buildings. This year we’ve attracted more entries than ever before, with more than 700 submissions from 66 different countries. Our congratulations go to the winners for truly accomplished projects.”

All the WAF Award category winners will go head to head on Friday 4th November as they present their projects and compete for the highest accolades in global architecture, which will be decided by a 'super-jury'¹ of some of the world's most influential architectural and urban designers, led by the distinguished Michael Sorkin. They will cast their votes to decide the World Building of the Year 2011, Structural Project of the Year 2011 and Future Project of the Year 2011.

World Shopping Building of the Year

Decameron, Sao Paulo, Brazil, Studio MK27, Brazil

The showroom of the Decameron furniture store is located on a rented site in the furniture commercial alley in São Paulo. To make the quick and economic construction viable, the architect, worked with the premise of a light occupation combined with industrial elements, which could easily be assembled.

World Display Building of the Year

Norwegian Wild Reindeer Centre Pavilion,Hjerkinn, Norway, Snøhetta, Norway

The Norwegian Wild Reindeer Centre Pavilion is located at Hjerkinn on the outskirts of Dovrefjell National Park, which rises 1200 metres above sea level and is home to Europe’s last wild reindeer herds and is the natural habitat for many rare plants and animals. The 90m² building, which features a rigid outer shell and an organic inner core is open to the public and serves as an observation pavilion for the Wild Reindeer Foundation educational programmes.

World Health Building of the Year

Rehabilitation Centre Groot Klimmendaal,Arnhem, Netherlands, Architectenbureau Koen van Velsen, Netherlands

In the undulating forest landscape around Arnhem in the eastern part of the Netherlands, revalidation centre ‘Groot Klimmendaal’ can be found standing as a quiet deer in between trees. From a small footprint, the building gradually fans out towards the top and cantilevers out over the surrounding terrain. The care concept is based on the idea that a positive and stimulating environment increases the well-being of patients and has a beneficial effect on their revalidation process. The design ambition was not to create a centre with the appearance of a health building but a building as a part of its surroundings and the community.

World Housing Building of the Year

8 House,Copenhagen, Denmark, Bjarke Ingels Group, Denmark

With spectacular views towards the Copenhagen Canal and over Kalvebod Fælled’s protected open spaces, 8 House will not only be offering residences to people in all of life’s stages as well as office spaces to the city’s business and trade - it will also serve as a house that allows people to cycle all the way from the ground floor to the top, moving alongside townhouses with gardens winding through an urban perimeter block.

Future Project of the Year – Commercial

Wadi Rum Resort, Jordan, Oppenheim Architecture + Design, USA

A unique luxury accommodation where desert sand meets desert stone, engaging with the landscape with nominal impact and primal elegance. The boundaries between man-made and nature, interior and exterior are deliberately blurred to establish maximum impact.

Future Project of the Year - Competition Entries

Glacier Discovery Walk, Alberta, Canada, Sturgess Architecture, Canada.

The Glacier Discovery Walk is envisioned as an extension of the fractal landscape that defines the Columbia Icefields in Canada’s Jasper National Park. Located along the edge of this dramatic escarpment, the project weaves a continuous thread of experience through united geometric and material forms. This sinuous experience defines the Discovery Walk not only as a singular destination, but as a catalyst and gateway that empowers guests to immerse themselves in the untouched natural environment.

Future Project of the Year – Experimental

The Tower of Nests, Shanghai, China, Kjellgren Kaminsky Architecture AB

Located in down town Shanghai, it is designed to be co-inhabited by humans and animals. Its outer skin is composed of natural materials to allow birds and bees to inhabit, yet providing a community space.

Future Project of the Year – Education

Women’s Opportunity Center,Kayonza, Rwanda, Sharon Davis Design, USA

On a two-hectare site in Rwanda, the most densely populated country in Africa, the Women’s Opportunity Center is a change-making campus that empowers one small community and, in turn, reframes the way we as architects engage the world.

Future Project of the Year – Cultural

Zhang Da Qian Museum,Neijang, China, Miralles Tagliabue EMBT, Spain

On April 2010, Excellence group invited EMBT to design Zhang Da Qian's museum in Neijang city, a purpose built museum to exhibit the work of the legendary Chinese painter in his home town. The design philosophy behind the museum would be to integrate the cultural essence of east and west and to express the past and the future and relate to the painter’s friendship with Picasso.

Future Project of the Year – Residential

Wafra Living, Kuwait, AGi Architects, Kuwait

The design for the “Wafra Living” complex, consists of a high rise building set back from the street and an L-shaped building defining the street edge, conceived to maximize privacy within the community, whilst providing ample natural light and usable indoor and outdoor common spaces. Cuts have been made in the front building in order to provide better views for the lower floor apartments in the back tower.

Future Project of the Year – Masterplanning

West Kowloon Cultural District Conceptual Plan,Hong Kong, Rocco Design Architects Ltd, Hong Kong

The proposed Conceptual Plan for the West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD) aspires to evoke a social energy conducive to the spirit of exploration and discovery, hence the essence for long-term sustainable cultural development for Hong Kong. The programmatic disposition of the master plan is structured on a 3-layer organization: green terrain (south), city link (north) and a cultural zone (centre) for the arts. Overlaid onto its framework is an urban street-grid. The Conceptual Plane aim is to offer a low carbon sustainable community.

Hanimaadaoo International Airport, Maldives, Integrated Design Associates Limited, Hong Kong

The new airport, designated as the country’s second international gateway, is located on an island with very limited land mass for an international airport of this size. With airfield infrastructure consuming nearly all the available land our concept of a “floating terminal” has been selected by the Government for its innovative, exciting and eco-friendly approach. The proposed terminal is built entirely on stilts over water without reclamation to preserve the existing environment and the natural coastline. With blue sea, white sandy beach as backdrop the new airport aims to provide passengers with a unique and memorable travel experience.

Binh Chanh Pediatric Hospital,Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, VK, 2050 A+P, Nhat My, Belgium

The Centre presents a welcoming and open environment, offering a natural habitat for care whilst still allowing plenty of opportunity for other activities. The double-height ground floor at entrance level facilitates the rehabilitation process with a sports and fitness facility including a swimming pool, and also a restaurant and theatre. As well as patients, family members and members of the local community (schools, theatre groups etc) are invited to use these facilities on a regular basis. The meandering facade of the building allows the forest inside the building.

Future Project of the Year – Landscape

Shoreline Walk, Beirut, Lebanon, Gustafson Porter, UK

The ‘Shoreline Walk’ is a sequence of connected spaces which form part of the reconstruction of the Beirut city centre. The project demonstrates Beirut’s character and resolve. It guides and reveals Beirut’s history and forms a connective spine to the city. A continuous white limestone line marks the ground and a wide pedestrian promenade. It features four areas to pause and reflect on pre-war city and forgotten memories.

World Display Building of the Year

Norwegian Wild Reindeer Centre Pavilion,Hjerkinn, Norway, Snøhetta, Norway

The Norwegian Wild Reindeer Centre Pavilion is located at Hjerkinn on the outskirts of Dovrefjell National Park, overlooking the Snøhetta mountain massif.
The 90m2 building is open to the public and serves as an observation pavilion for the Wild Reindeer Foundation educational programmes. A 1,5km nature path brings visitors to this spectacular site, 1200 meters above sea level.
Dovrefjell is a mountain range that forms a barrier between the norther and southern parts of Norway. It is home to Europe’s last wild reindeer herds and is the natural habitat for many rare plants and animals. Among the unique wildlife at Dovrefjell, the Musk Oxen herds are probably the main attractions for visitors. A long history filled with travellers, hunting traditions, mining, and military activities has left its mark on this land. In addition to the natural and cultural landscape, the Dovre mountain range also holds significant importance in the Norwegian consciousness. National legends, myths, poetry (Ibsen), music (Grieg), and pilgrimages celebrate the mystic and eternal qualities of this powerful place. The founding fathers of the Norwegian constitution are ”agreed and faithful, until the fall of Dovre!”
This unique natural, cultural and mythical landscape has formed the basis of the architectural idea. The building design is based on a rigid outer shell and an organic inner core. Reminiscent of rock or ice eroded by wind and running water, the south facing exterior wall and the interior create a protected and warm gathering place, while still preserving the visitor’s view of the spectacular natural panorama.
Considerable emphasis is put on the quality and durability of the materials to withstand the harsh climate. The rectangular frame is made in raw steel resembling the iron ore found in the local bedrock. Over time the rusted colour blends with the natural colours in the sourrounding mountains.
The simple form and use of natural materials reference local building traditions.
However, advanced technologies have been utilized both in the design and the fabrication process. Using 3D computer models to drive the milling machines, Norwegian shipbuilders in Hardangerfjord have created the organic forms from 10 inch square pine beams. The wood was then assembled in a traditional way using only wood pegs as fasteners. The exterior wall was then treated with pine tar while the interior wood has been oiled.
The pavilion is a robust yet nuanced building that gives visitors an opportunity to reflect and contemplate this vast and rich landscape.

WAF Awards Day Two Category Winners Announced at World Architecture Festival Awards 2011

The presentation of the WAF Awards is taking place during the largest global celebration of architecture - the World Architecture Festival, which is being held in Barcelona (CCIB) this week.

The WAF Awards day two winners are as follows:

World Shopping Building of the Year

Decameron, Sao Paulo, Brazil, Studio MK27, Brazil

The space was constructed through a mixed solution, with maritime transport containers and a specifically designed structure. Despite the spatial limitation imposed by the pre-determined dimension of the containers, the piece has impressive structural attributes that makes piling them possible. Two stories of containers form tunnels where products are displayed side by side.
The ample span, necessary to show furniture in relation with each other, is constructed by a metallic structure. This space is closed, in front and in back, by double-height metal casements with alveolar polycarbonate. At the back of the lot, there is a patio filled with trees and a pebbled-ground. When both doors are simultaneously opened, the whole store becomes integrated with its urban context. At rush stressful hours, by opening only the back doors, the store becomes self-absorbed, ruled by the presence of the inner-garden.

On the back of the site is the office, closed by a glass wall that enables the designers to take part on the sales life. Two edges of the design process in contact through the inner patio as other opposing strengths also meet at this small project: The intensity of the urban life and a small nature retreat, the power of the containers and the lightness of the metallic structure and finally, the linearity of the tunnels and the cubic volume.

Much to report on this month as we held a ground-breaking ceremony for another school in Haiti and launched a long-awaited consumer awareness campaign there. We've started new projects in our Football for Hope program and Nike GAMECHANGERS, and we're moving forward with the Tohoku Rebuilding Program in the areas affected by the Japanese earthquake and tsunami.
This month we're making a few big announcements - one is the start of the 2011 Open Architecture Challenge: [un]restricted access: from military space to civic space. The upcoming challenge asks designers to develop imaginative and revolutionary ideas for re-purposing abandoned, closed or decommissioned military sites and structures around the world. Stay tuned for more on that. And in other big news, Architecture for Humanity will relaunch Worldchanging by merging the site with the Open Architecture Network. The result will be a robust center for applied innovation and sustainable development.

Haiti: Building A Strong Future
Bati Byen Launches!
After months of development, the program that will assist training, financing and economic sufficiency for Haitian businesses is ready for the Big Time. Adding to the hoopla this week, Bati Byen billboards have been sighted around Port-au-Prince.
Building Analysis with MIT
This fall, the School of Architecture at MIT will be conducting a series of laboratory tests on the schools we're designing and building in Haiti as part of the Building Technology Laboratory. The focus is on the classroom buildings at Bon Berger Pele, Home of Knowledge and Santo and will feed directly into real world design and construction.
Groundbreaking at Academie Timoun
At a very joyous (and well-attended!) groundbreaking ceremony for the Haiti Partners' Children's Academy in Bawonsya, architect and Design Fellow Kate Evarts surveyed the scene: "I think that if I went to school here I'd spend all day looking out the doors and dreaming of what I could be when I grew up," Kate said.

We are really pleased and excited to announce the opening of the Lesotho Football For Hope Centre. There was an official ceremony by the centre host. We are moving on to the Phase III of the Football For Hope program with the start of 7 new projects.

Chapter News

We're holding our 2nd annual Chapter Forum on October 22, in conjunction with Design Like You Give a Damn: LIVE! This event, free to all registered chapter members, will be another terrific opportunity for chapter members to connect and hold interactive discussions on chapter operations. We'll have workshops on project selections and fund raising from 9am-noon at the Center for Architecture in the heart of Soho, NYC. Register today.
Congratulations to our Atlanta chapter, recipient of the September Micro Grant for their Oasis project. The project provides design solution for the long standing shortage of public transportation amenities in the Atlanta area.
The Auckland chapter just launched its Open Ideas Design Competition to address the rebuilding of a Christchurch school campus. Registration deadline is November 14. And our very own CEO (Chief Eternal Optimist) Cameron Sinclair recently finished his tour as 2011 International Architect in Residence through a New Zealand public lecture.
Chicago chapter's project Fresh Moves was featured on CNN recently.
Our Denver chapter is working with the Disability Development Foundation, Crutches for Africa, Boulder Kisumu Sister City to get a new project off the ground for the Joyland Special School (primary & secondary) in Kisumu, Kenya.
Our San Francisco chapter has been finalizing design development for their 1 Burrows project, which seeks to transform a neglected section of Burrows street in San Bruno into a multi-use public gathering space.

On the occasion of the 7th FESTIVAL OF THE LIVELY ARCHITECTURES in MONTPELLIER,
Champ Libre association sends a call for applications to realize 10 interventions.
The Festival is at the heart of Montpellier city; it will take place in the city centre more specifically in the
courtyards of certain town house. At the same time it will be proposed a path to the visitors, kind of
architectural discovery of the city heart.
So, Montpellier’s FAV objective is on one hand, to open to inhabitants, during the festival these
symbolic places and on the other hand - thanks to creators teams intervention which will present a
specific work to every place - to reveal an intimate relationship between contemporary architecture,
installation and patrimonial site.

1 FESTIVAL PRESENTATION
The Lively Architectures
The Lively Architecture Festival wish answer to evolution of architectural practice which, joining all the
domains related to its culture, does not any more hesitate to assert itself in its realizations. The Lively
Architectures are short-lived and evolutionary by nature; they are every time punctual, registered in a
short temporality and thoughts for a specific place.
Such an increased reality, they add, transform, reveal a forgotten space because they are invisible or
in the contrary too much seen. Respectful of environment, they transfigure it in an inhabited
environment where the past, the present to see even the future make only one. The Lively
architectures create an environment where the imagination of each takes place. So, they have the
sense of humor, as much as the humility. When we would like to freeze the architecture in the mirror of the big History and the Patrimony, the Lively Architectures prefer for their part, the privilege of the
custom in the law of the author. They are copy left in their attitude and are sincerely delighted at any
free and constructive reappropriation.

Refusing the unchanging, during the festival they questionize our usual environment. Addressing to a
wide public, they proud a sensory adventure, offer a moved glance. They position them self as a
revelator. The Lively architectures are object of desire, envy and simply wish to find the sense of the
pleasure of the place, the city, to offer the sensitive and the tactile, to reposition the Man in the heart of
the architecture.

For this 7th edition of the Festival of the Lively Architectures in Montpellier, chosen places are in
adequacy with this historic city. One of its wealth is the presence in the heart of the city of numerous
town houses. Today, Montpellier has got more than seventy. Number of these privates town houses
and inner courtyards, are not open to the public. So, festival objective is double. On one hand open to
the inhabitants these symbolic sites, make them discover hidden places from their own city. On the
other hand, thanks to the intervention of the teams of creators presenting a specific work to every
place, it is a question of revealing an intimate relationship between contemporary architecture and
patrimonial site.

In their history the courtyards , half-private and half public spaces, have had very diverse functions as
place of representation, distribution welcome ,but today the courtyard remain anused. Divested of any
function, they appear as simple spaces crossed to join a private place. Forgotten, because
inaccessible, or forgotten because inappropriate, these courtyard disappear little by little from a
common knowledge, even from a collective imagination. They become real forgotten spaces and
nevertheless possess an appropriate specificity, playing between shadow and light, offering a
possibility of glorifying these places with few things. So, the contemporary architecture by game will
reveal and will wake up sleepy sites.

Theme of the Festival 2012: Surprise
Festival of the lively Architectures 2012
"SURPRISE” n.f. Action by which we surprise. Defend oneself from the surprise of senses, from the
surprises of self-esteem. It also means Amazement, state of mind which is struck by something
unexpected. I do not recover my surprise. Experience a sweet surprise. Arrange to someone a
pleasant surprise. Go from surprise to surprise. It specially says about a Gift, an unexpected pleasure.
To surprise someone.

Definition of the French Academy, 8th Edition
The surprise call to mind the plurality's notion. Plurality of senses, situations, mainly plurality of
people. To make the surprise exist, it has to be several people or two at least, one for offer and the
other to receive. So the surprise proposes an action staging by a desire to share and a will of opening
toward somewhere, a stranger who astonishes or delights us.

In 2012, the lively architectures will be real surprises supporting this necessary interaction,
transforming a patrimonial architecture, motionless, static and unchanged to a dynamic space, fluid,
ephemeral, evolutionary and creative space. That’s their role, to open up new space and new
sensations, to allow forgotten places to reappear, also offering a sharing and pleasure space in the
same time. So the patrimonial case won’t only be the receiver and the contemporary one, the supplier.

The surprise will be mutual, giving and receiving both. The surprise will be definitely at the heart of the
lively architectures’ new edition, which still has to astonish more and more spectators this year.
Surprise them by the pleasure of discovery wonder places and situations. The unexpected will take
place in order to occur a sweet experience to everyone.
Through this town path, everyone would go from surprises to surprises.

3 MODALITY SELECTION
Team selection on file: applications files have to reach at the latest on December 15th, 2010 at
midnight, French time (GMT+1 / date of emission of mail being valid.)

Thank you for specifying in the title of the e-mail “2012 FAV applications Montpellier”, and not to send
too heavy files (maximum 10 Mo by application).
A file presenting in detail theme and technical constraints connected to the conception of an
intervention (ground, exhibition, visitors, proposition of setting-up presence…) will be sent to the
selected candidates. The results of the selection will be announced in the course of January.

5 FOR THE 10 TEAM SELECTED
The Festival will take place from 13th to 17th June 2012.
Delivery deadline of the projects is fixed in January 15th, 2012.
A 1 000, 00-€ TTC subsidy will be assigned to each of 10 realized projects.
A work of the 7th edition presenting the realizations will be published at the end of the year 2011.

À l’occasion du 7ème FESTIVAL DES ARCHITECTURES VIVES à MONTPELLIER, l’association
Champ Libre lance un appel à candidatures pour réaliser 10 interventions.
Le Festival s’inscrit au coeur de la ville de Montpellier; il se déroulera dans l’Ecusson et plus
spécifiquement dans les cours intérieures de certains hôtels particuliers. Par-là même, il sera proposé un parcours aux visiteurs, sorte de découverte architecturale au coeur de la ville.
Ainsi, l’objectif du FAV de Montpellier est d’une part, d’ouvrir aux habitants, le temps du festival, ces
lieux emblématiques et d’autre part - grâce à l’intervention des équipes de créateurs qui présenteront
une oeuvre spécifique à chaque lieu - de révéler une relation intime entre une architecture
contemporaine, une installation et un site patrimonial.

Des Architectures Vives
Le Festival des Architecture Vives souhaite répondre à l’évolution de la pratique architecturale qui,
intégrant tous les domaines connexes à sa culture, n'hésite plus à s'affirmer dans ses réalisations. Les Architectures Vives sont éphémères et évolutives par nature, elles sont chaque fois ponctuelles,
inscrites dans une courte temporalité et pensées pour un lieu spécifique.

Telle une réalité augmenté, elles s’ajoutent, transforment, révèlent un espace oublié car invisible ou
au contraire trop vu. Respectueuses d’un milieu d’inscription, elles le transfigurent en un
environnement habité où le passé, le présent voire même le futur ne font qu’un. Les architectures
Vives créent un environnement où l’imaginaire de chacun prend place. Ainsi, elles ont le sens de
l'humour, autant que de l'humilité. Quand on voudrait figer l'architecture dans le miroir de la grande
Histoire et du Patrimoine, les Architectures Vives préfèrent pour leur part la prérogative de l'usage au
droit de l'auteur. Elles sont « copyleft » dans leur attitude et se réjouissent sincèrement de toute
réappropriation libre et constructive.

Refusant l'immuable, le temps du festival, elles questionnent notre environnement quotidien.
S'adressant à un large public, elles proposent une aventure sensitive, offrent un regard décalé. Elles
se positionnent comme un révélateur. Les Architectures Vives sont objet de désir, d'envie et
souhaitent simplement retrouver le sens du plaisir du lieu, de la ville, offrir du sensible et du tactile,
repositionner l’Homme au coeur de l’architecture.

Pour cette 7ème édition du Festival des Architectures Vives à Montpellier, les lieux choisis sont en
adéquation avec cette ville historique. Une de ses richesses est la présence dans le coeur de la ville
de nombreux hôtels particuliers. Aujourd'hui, Montpellier en compte plus de soixante-dix. Nombre de
ces hôtels et cours intérieures privés ne sont pas accessibles au public. Ainsi, l'objectif de ce festival
est double. D'une part ouvrir aux habitants ces sites emblématiques, leur faire découvrir les lieux
cachés de leur propre ville. D'autre part, grâce à l'intervention des équipes de créateurs présentant
une oeuvre spécifique à chaque lieu, il s'agit de révéler une relation intime entre une architecture
contemporaine et un site patrimonial.

Dans leur histoire, les cours, espaces semi-publics semi-privés, se sont vues attribuer des fonctions
très diverses entre lieu de représentation, d’accueil de distribution, mais aujourd’hui ces cours restent
inhabitées. Dénuées de toute fonction, elles se présentent comme de simples espaces traversés pour rejoindre un lieu privé. Oubliées, car inaccessibles, ou oubliées car inappropriées, ces cours
disparaissent petit à petit d’une connaissance commune, voire d’un imaginaire collectif. Elles
deviennent de véritables espaces oubliés et pourtant possèdent une spécificité propre, jouant entre
ombre et lumière, offrant une possibilité de magnifier ces lieux par peu de chose. Ainsi, l’architecture
contemporaine par jeu révèlera et réveillera des sites endormis.

2 THEMATIQUE DU FAV 2012 - 7ème Edition à Montpellier
Thème du Festival 2012 : SURPRISE

« SUPRISE ». n. f. Action par laquelle on surprend. Se défendre de la surprise des sens, des
surprises de l’amour-propre. Il signifie aussi Etonnement, état de l’esprit qui est frappé par quelque
chose d’inattendu. Je ne reviens pas de ma surprise. Eprouver une douce surprise. Ménager à
quelqu’un une surprise agréable. Aller de surprise en surprise. Il se dit spécialement d’un Cadeau,
d’un plaisir inattendu. Faire une surprise à quelqu’un.

Définition de l’Académie Française, 8ème édition
La Surprise évoque la pluralité. Pluralité de sens, pluralité de situations, mais surtout pluralité de
personnes. Pour que la surprise existe, il faut être à plusieurs et à minima deux, un pour offrir et un
pour recevoir. La Surprise propose ainsi une action mise en oeuvre par un désir de partage et une
volonté d’ouverture vers un ailleurs, un inconnu qui nous surprend et nous enjoue. Les Architectures
Vives seront en 2012 de véritables Surprises portant cette nécessaire interaction, transformant une
architecture patrimoniale, figée, statique, immuable, en un espace dynamique, fluide, éphémère,
volage et inventif. Tel est leur rôle, à la fois ouvrir de nouveaux espaces, de nouvelles sensations,
permettre à des lieux quelque peu oubliés de renaître, mais également de s’offrir en tant que lieu de
partage et de plaisir. Ainsi, l’écrin patrimonial ne sera pas uniquement l’écrin qui reçoit, et l’intervention
contemporaine celle qui donne. La Surprise sera réciproque, l’un offrant et s’offrant simultanément à
l’autre. La Surprise sera donc au coeur de cette nouvelle édition du Festival des Architectures Vives,
qui cette année encore doit surprendre un public de plus en plus nombreux. Le surprendre par le
plaisir de la découverte, par l’émerveillement des lieux et des situations. L’inattendu prendra place
pour que chacun éprouve une douce surprise. Et ce sera au travers du parcours dans la ville que
chacun ira de Surprises en Surprises.

3 MODALITE DE SELECTION
La consultation est ouverte aux jeunes architectes et architectes-paysagistes. L’objectif est de
promouvoir la jeune création architecturale.

Merci de préciser dans l’intitulé du mail « Candidature FAV 2012 Montpellier », et de ne pas envoyer
de fichiers trop lourds ( 10 Mo maximum par candidature).
Constitution du dossier de candidature :
+ Présentation de l’équipe, ses membres, avec Curriculum Vitae de chaque membre
+ Références imagées de réalisations architecturales, installations, concours…
+ Note d’intention au regard du Festival des Architectures Vives de Montpellier et de la thématique
Surprise. Cette note d’environ une page doit exprimer de quelle manière le candidat envisage son
installation. Elle peut être accompagnée d’une image.
Un dossier présentant en détail le thème et les contraintes techniques liées à la conception d’une
intervention (sol, exposition, visiteurs, proposition d’implantation …) sera adressé aux candidats
sélectionnés. Les résultats de la sélection seront annoncés courant janvier 2012.

Sélection des équipes sur dossier : Les dossiers de candidature doivent parvenir au plus tard le :
15 décembre 2011 à minuit, heure Française
(GMT+1 / date d’émission du courriel faisant foi).
5 POUR LES DIX EQUIPES SELECTIONNEES
Le Festival aura lieu du 13 au 17 juin 2012.
La date limite de remise des projets est fixée au 15 février 2012.
Une subvention de 1 000,00 € TTC sera allouée à chacun des 10 projets réalisés.
Un ouvrage de la 7ème édition présentant les réalisations sera édité fin d’année 2012.
