How to Install JMeter Plugins Manager

Why do we need JMeter Plugins Manager

We can install all JMeter Plugins manually without JMeter Plugins Manager assistance. But maintenance of plugins becomes complicated with the time as we have to install, update, uninstall all the plugins manually. To overcome the manual efforts, JMeter Plugins Manager was introduced.

JMeter Plugins Manager comes with GUI interface through which we can Install, Update and Uninstall the required plugin easily.

JMeter Plugins Manager doesn't come with default JMeter installation. As you can see below in the screenshot there is no Plugins Manager option in Options menu. We have to install JMeter Plugins Manager manually.

How to Install the JMeter Plugins Manager

Download the Plugins Manager JAR file and put it into JMeter's lib\ext directory.

Download JMeter Plugins Manager

We can download JMeter Plugins Manager jar from JMeter Plugins website.

Click on plugins-manager.jar link to start downloading or click here

Installing/Placing JMeter Plugins Manager Jar

Once the Jar File is downloaded, place the file in at lib\ext
Restart JMeter

Path_to_JMeter_dir\apache-jmeter-x.x\lib\ext

Verify JMeter Plugins Manager Installation

After restarting JMeter > Go to Options menu > 'Plugins Manager' should be present.

User can search plugin and apply changes.

CSV Data Set Config

We cannot define a large data set in JMeter script and it is also not recommended to generate large set of random values at run-time as it is expensive in terms of CPU and memory. So we can create test data in advance and can be used as run-time parameter to create different sets of values from each run. Loading data from a file at run-time is cheaper than generating it. To Load data from a file 'CSV Data Set Config' is used in JMeter. 'CSV Data Set Config' is used to read lines from data file. Data is split according to the delimiter and assigned into variables. JMeter supports CSV files. CSV files which have a header line as the column names followed by data with new line. By using 'CSV Data Set Config' we can answer below questions.

Multiple User Login Example:

In this example we will load data from external data source and achieve Multiple User Login in JMeter. We will

Simulate a load test with 5 concurrent unique Login.
Username and password will be loaded from Data file.

To do so please follow the below steps:

Create a test plan.

Test Plan contains one Thread Group.
Thread Group contains:

“CSV Data Set Config”
“HTTP Request”.
“View Results Tree”

How to add CSV Data Set Config

Right-click on the Thread Group,
Select Add menu > Config Element > then select CSV Data Set.

CSV Data Set Config Settings:

Filename: Enter the file name only if file is present inside /bin directory else enter the complete path of file.

Variable Names(comma-delimited) : Enter the column names from the file. If headers are not present in the file then the entered variables are interpreted as the column names. JMeter supports CSV header lines: if the variable name field empty, then the first line of the file is read and interpreted as the list of column names.

Data File Configuration:

Data file contains Username and password for script as shown in figure below. Data file is stored in /bin directory and named as credentials.txt

Thread Group Configuration:

Define number of thread for test execution and duration. In this example we have set

No. of threads: 5
Ramp-up period: 1
Loop count : 1

View Results:

As you can see in figure below each thread has unique username associated with it. Total number of 5 requests are generated with different username.

To create a basic script in JMeter, we need to add the following components:

Test Plan

Thread Group

Sampler

Listener

Test Plan:

The Test Plan is where the overall settings for a test are specified.Option is available on Test Plan to instruct JMeter to run the Thread Group serially rather than in parallel.Static variables can be defined for values that are repeated throughout a test under User Defined Variables section.
On the launch of JMeter, Empty Test Plan is generated.

Thread Group:

The first step you have to do with JMeter Test Plan is to add a Thread Group element. The Thread Group tells JMeter the number of users you want to simulate, frequency of requests, and how many requests they should send.

How to add Thread Group:

Right-click on the Test Plan,
Click Add menu → Threads (Users) → Thread Group.

JMeter Sampler

Samplers perform the actual work of JMeter. Each sampler generates one or more sample results. The sample results have various attributes like success/failure, time etc. and can be viewed in the various listeners. We will use HTTP Sampler to generate a HTTP request.

How to add HTTP Sampler:

Right-click on Thread Group,
Click Add menu → then select Sampler → HTTP Request.

JMeter Listener

Listeners perform several roles like listening to results, view, save, and read saved test results etc. We can save results is XML and CSV format. XML is default format. We will add 'View Results in Tree' Listener.

How to add Listener:

Right-click on Thread Group,
Click Add menu → then select Listener→ View Results Tree.

Project Hierarchy

So far we have added all the required components to the script. Lets add some data to execute our first HTTP request and First JMeter Test.

Add Users:

We will run this test with single user, single iteration. You can generate load by increasing thread group count, iteration, ramp-up as per requirement.

Add HTTP Request

For example purpose we will use w3schools.com to craft a basic GET call and SAVE the script.

Port: 443

Run Script:

We can create HTML report for Maven JMeter Test by following below points:

Create a source folder named src/test/resources
Copy/Paste reportgenerator.properties and report-template file/folder from JMeter/bin directory to src/test/resources
Update POM with CSV output_format property and add maven-antrun-plugin

After setting up project, to run test in JMeter we have to:

Install Performance Plugin in Jenkins
Create Free style project and specify Maven Goals

Install Performance Plugin in Jenkins

Go to Jenkins > Manage Jenkins > Manage Plugin > Search and Install the Performance plugin

Create Free style project

Go to Jenkins > New Item

Enter Job Name and select Freestyle Project > Click Ok

Add Build Step > Invoke top-level Maven Targets

Define Maven Goals > clean verify (as per your POM targets/goals)
Click Advance > add path to POM

Add Post Build Action > Publish Performance test report

Specify Source Data file and Error Threshold

Save the project and Build it.

To pass parameters from Maven project using JMeter Maven plugin, please make sure you have Maven project created and udated JMX placed at src/test/jmeter source folder. If not please first setup your project Running JMeter Script from Eclipse in Maven project

Please make sure that you have created variables in the script as shown in below example.This example uses Number of Threads, Ramp-Up Period and Duration as variables for reference. Default value is set as 1 for each variable Number of Threads, Ramp-Up Period and Duration.

Import the Parameterized script (.jmx) in eclipse under src/test/jmeter

We can run JMeter Script from Eclipse in 4 simple steps:

Create a simple Maven project in eclipse
Import JMeter Script(.jmx) file in eclipse
Add jmeter-maven-plugin to pom.xml

Go to File > New > Project

Select Wizard > select Maven Project

Select project name and location wizard > Keep selected use default work-space location > Click Next

Select an Archetype > simply Click Next

Specify Archetype parameters wizard > Please enter GroupId, Artifact Id > Click Finish

Import JMeter Script in Eclipse

To import and execute JMeter script in eclipse, first we need to rename the src/test/java source folder to src/test/jmeter. After renaming project hierarchy will look like this

Loop Controller and Counter in JMeter

By the end of this post you will be able to add a Loop Controller and Counter to your script which will loop a request n no of times.

Loop Controller
Loop Controller is a Logic Controller which determines the order in which Samplers are processed.You can use Loop Controller, if you want to loop a request/logic a certain number of times in addition to the loop value specified for the Thread Group.

Counter
Counter can be used anywhere in the Thread Group. User can set a start point, maximum value of counter and the increment using counter config.Counter will start from start point and reach the maximum value and then reset back to the start value, it will continue like that until the test is ended.

Example:

We will loop a request 10 times using Loop Controller. And we will set Counter values start with 1, Increment by 1 and reach Maximum 10.

So JMeter will send 10 request with counter values 1 to 10 as shown below in results.

Please follow below steps to add loop Controller and counter.

Add Components:

Add Loop Controller to Thread Group

Right click on Thread Group > Add > Logic Controller > add Loop Controller.
Add Counter to Loop Controller
Right click on Loop Controller > Add > Config Element > add Counter
Add HTTP Request Sampler to Loop Controller
Right click on Thread Group > Add > Sampler > HTTP Request
Add View Results Tree to Thread Group
Right click on Thread Group > Add > Listener > add View Results Tree

Loop Controller:

Using Loop Controller, JMeter will loop through a certain number of times, in addition to the loop value you specified for the Thread Group.

Set Loop counters value to 10

Counter:

The counter configuration lets the user configure a starting point, a maximum, and the increment. The counter will loop from the start to the max, and then start over with the start, continuing on like that until the test is ended.
Set Values:

Start: 1, Increment: 1, Maximum: 10, Format: 00, Reference Name: Count

Note: If the counter exceeds the maximum, then it is reset to the Start value. If your loop count is 10 and maximum value is 5, then you will get output 1,2,3,4,5,1,2,3,4,5

HTTP Request Sampler:

Change request name to say: Counter value - ${Count}

Set Server Name: google.com

Save and Run Script:

Save the above script and Select "View Results Tree" and click on "Start"

Record and Play script in JMeter

By the end of this post you will be able to record and Play script in JMeter. So for recoding we have to do the following:

Add Components:

1. Add Thread Group to Test Plan
Right click on Test Plan > Add > Threads (Users) > add Thread Group

2. Add Logic Controller to Thread Group
Right click on Thread Group > Add > Logic Controller > add Recording Controller

3. Add View Results Tree to Thread Group
Right click on Thread Group > Add > Listener > add View Results Tree

4. Add Script Recorder to Workbench
Right click on Workbench > Add > Non-Test Elements > add HTTP(S) Test Script Recorder

Browser Proxy Settings:

We need to configure browser to use Proxy, so that JMeter Test Script Recorder can record the events happening on browser. For Firefox

Menu > Options > Advanced (Network tab) > Settings (under Connections)

Select “Manual proxy configuration”
· HTTP Proxy: localhost and Port: 8080
Select check-box “Use this proxy server for all protocols”

Start Proxy Server on Port 8080:

Start HTTP(S) Test Script Recorder

As we start Script recorder a dialog with Root CA certificate message will appear.
Click OK.

Browse to record the event

Open up your browser (Firefox, where the proxy is configured),
Open the URL say (www.google.com) you want to record, if you get “Connection Untrusted” message then do the following:

Visit the necessary links and do the required actions, all actions will be recorded under 'Recording Controller' node of 'Thread Group'.

Stop the Script recorder

Finally Save your TestPlan.

Play the recorded script

Now select the “View Results tree” and click on Start icon in green to play the recorded script (Ctrl+R)

If test run successfully you will see all executed requests in Green.

Run JMeter – GUI Mode | Server Mode| Non GUI

We can run JMeter in 3 modes:

GUI Mode
Server Mode
NON GUI or command line mode

GUI Mode:

Run JMeter in GUI mode by running the JMETER_HOME/bin/jmeter.bat

Server Mode

This mode is used to for distributed testing; it follows client-server architecture

Client - the system running Jmeter GUI, which controls the test

Server – the system running jmeter-server, which takes commands from the GUI and send requests to

the target system(s)

Target– the webserver we plan to Stress/Load test

We can start the JMeter server component by running the JMETER_HOME/bin/jmeter-server (unix) or JMETER_HOME/bin/jmeter-server.bat (windows)

NON GUI - Command line mode

We can run JMeter in command line mode as:

Open command prompt
Navigate to JMETER_HOME/bin directory
Run the following cmd

jmeter -n -t scriptname.jmx -l filename.jtl

-n, --nongui (run JMeter in nongui mode)

-t, --testfile <argument> (the jmeter test(.jmx) file to run)

-l, --logfile <argument> (the file to log samples to)

Jmeter is Java application and it should run on any system that has a compatible Java implementation.

Pre-requisites:

Java must be installed to run JMeter

Download and Install latest JRE (Java Runtime Environment) from Oracle

Download JMeter:

Download the latest version of JMeter from Apache, download .zip file (apache-jmeter-2.11.zip)

Install JMeter:

To install JMeter, unzip the .zip file into the directory where you want JMeter to be installed. After unzipping, installation directory structure should look like as shown below.
