All reviews submitted through our website are automatically posted through our system. We do not selectively approve only positive reviews or remove reviews simply because they may contain criticism.

Our review system also identifies whether a reviewer is a Verified Owner. This means the reviewer has an account with us and has enrolled in or purchased a class or course through our school. We believe this adds an important level of credibility and transparency for prospective students.

Just like on large online retail platforms such as Amazon, verified purchase systems help provide context about whether the reviewer has actually used the product or service.

Why We Do Not Use Independent Review Platforms

Over the years, we explored several independent review platforms and services, including attempts to use platforms such as Trustpilot and Google reviews.

After careful consideration, we decided not to rely on third-party review systems for several important reasons.

1. Reviews Can Disappear if the Platform Changes

When reviews are hosted entirely on a third-party platform, your business becomes dependent on that company continuing to operate and maintain your account.

If the review company changes policies, suspends accounts, becomes too expensive, or no longer exists in the future, years of valuable student reviews and experiences could disappear overnight.

Over the years, we have upgraded to different online platforms and lost valuable student reviews in the process. Because we understand the challenge of losing reviews and having to start over from scratch, we prefer not to depend on another external review company.

We wanted our student reviews to remain part of our school and community long-term.

2. Additional Ongoing Expenses

Many third-party review platforms require ongoing subscription fees or paid plans to access features, manage reviews, or display review content properly.

As a small independent educational business, we prefer to invest our resources into improving our courses, creating new educational content, updating formulations, filming lessons, and supporting students rather than paying large recurring fees for external review hosting.

3. Anyone Can Leave a Review on Many Platforms

One major concern we encountered with some independent review systems is that individuals can sometimes leave reviews even if they have never actually taken a course or class.

This can create situations where reviews may be inaccurate, misleading, or unrelated to the real student experience.

Our internal review system helps provide more context by identifying verified students who have actually enrolled in our educational programs.

Why We Could Not Use Google Reviews

We also explored using Google Business Profiles reviews. However, Google’s policies generally focus on businesses that have in-person customer interactions.

Because Joan Morais Cosmetics School operates as an online-only educational business, we found that Google reviews did not work for our structure.

Our Philosophy: Open, Honest, and Transparent

We believe that authentic reviews from real students are important. We also believe prospective students deserve the opportunity to read a wide range of experiences and opinions.

Essential Oils Are Highly Concentrated

Essential oils are not the same as infused oils or herbal extracts. They are concentrated volatile compounds distilled or expressed from plants.

For example:

• It can take hundreds of pounds of plant material to produce a small amount of essential oil.
• Citrus oils are often cold pressed from peels.
• Some floral oils require enormous quantities of flowers for a tiny yield.

Because of this concentration, essential oils should almost never be applied undiluted to the skin.

Even oils considered “gentle” can cause irritation or sensitization when overused.

A Conservative Usage Guideline

Why Gentle Baby Skin Care Matters

A baby’s skin is delicate, sensitive, and still developing. After birth, the skin transitions from the protected environment of the womb to exposure to air, fabrics, temperature changes, and environmental elements. Because of this, baby skin can easily become irritated or dry.

Many commercial baby products contain strong fragrances, harsh detergents, unnecessary dyes, and overly complicated ingredient systems that may not be ideal for delicate skin. Gentle, plant-based baby care products can help support the skin naturally while keeping routines simple and soothing.

In many cases, newborn skin only needs warm water and a very mild cleanser. When products are used on the skin, especially products that remain on the skin like balms and ointments, they should be very gentle and thoughtfully formulated.

A newborn baby is born with wrinkly skin and a protective layer called the vernix. This vernix will naturally fall off during the first week. Avoid rubbing or removing this layer. Oatmeal, Avena Sativa: Oatmeal helps to soothe nerves and the skin. It helps relieve itching.

Plantain, Plantago major: Plantain helps to heal wounds and reduce itching.

Roses, Rosa centifolia: Roses are calming, soothing and comforting.

Hydrosols can be beneficial for baby skin. These are mild and deliver plant nutrients to the skin. Hydrosols are often a gentler alternative to essential oils for babies and children.

Purple Shampoo (Blue Shampoo)

Purple shampoo, also blue shampoo depending on the tone, is a specialized toning cleanser designed to neutralize unwanted warm tones in the hair. It’s one of the most widely used corrective maintenance products in both professional salons and at-home hair care routines.

If you’re formulating hair care products or building a line, understanding how toning shampoos work gives you a powerful, high-demand product category to offer.

What Is Purple (or Blue) Shampoo?

Purple and blue shampoos are color-depositing shampoos that use pigments to visually correct unwanted tones:

• Purple shampoo → neutralizes yellow tones
• Blue shampoo → neutralizes orange/brassy tones

This works based on color theory:

• Purple sits opposite yellow on the color wheel
• Blue sits opposite orange

So when applied to hair, these pigments visually cancel out warmth, leaving the hair looking:

• Brighter
• Cooler-toned
• More refined in color

The Purpose of Toning Shampoos

The primary function is color maintenance, especially for:

• Blonde hair (natural or lightened)
• Gray and silver hair
• Highlighted or balayaged hair
• Bleached or chemically lightened hair

What it does:

• Reduces brassiness
• Enhances cool tones (ash, platinum, silver)
• Brightens dull or yellowed hair
• Extends time between salon visits

How It Works (Cosmetic Chemistry Perspective)

From a formulation standpoint, purple shampoo is a surface-deposit system.

Key Mechanism:

• Water-soluble or dispersible direct dyes (basic dyes) deposit onto the hair shaft
• Hair, especially porous or damaged hair, has a negatively charged surface
• Many toning dyes are cationic (positively charged), allowing them to lightly adhere to the hair

This is not permanent color, it is:

• Temporary, does not color the hair purple if formulated correctly
• Surface-level deposition
• Gradually removed with washing

Key Functional Components in a Purple Shampoo

A toning shampoo is not just about adding pigment, it must balance cleansing, deposition, and hair feel.

1. Surfactant System

• Mild cleansers are preferred:
  • Decyl Glucoside
  • Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine
