Making money is all about your mindset. It doesn't matter whether it's recession or times of booming economy. Credit cards are used all the time and they have been used for the past 20 years and more. We still need to eat and sleep somewhere. We still need to pay our bills and taxes.

Some people moan that they have no money. The same group of people, if you asked them a few years back, complained of lack of cash. And cash is king, as we all know.

The more you have the more you want. As Robert Kiyosaki rightly observed: once you get promotion, you get a bigger house and a bigger mortgage. You create bigger liability. So your bills go up and you have to work even more to afford them. It's a vicious circle.

I titled this article 'how to earn money from home the easy way' because I think I have stumbled on one of the easiest ways that exist.

Now it is both easy in one sense and hard in another. It is easy because all you have to do is navigate through web pages and write quality content. It is hard because you will have to get started working without any guarantee of a paycheck, and you'll have to work hard.

If you've read my first two installments in this series, we've covered the reasons why people get into an online business and external factors as two of the reasons why people can't make money online. In this installment, I'm going to cover what I call the "head full of stuffing" syndrome. In plain English...information overload OR lack of information. Keep reading to find out why this is one of the most frustrating aspects of success that online business persons face.

Unless you have an education in business, which isn't a guarantee that you're going to have any success in itself, you're coming into this with a head full of nothing. You're totally at a loss as to where to even begin. Unless you have friends who can help you, you're totally on your own. Most people will, at that point, turn to the search engines...Google being the search engine of choice for about 50% of the population.

And if you're like most people, you'll type in something like, "How can I make money from home?" After doing this, you'll get a list of about 300,000 sites IF you type this with quotes to try to narrow things down at least a bit. Still, 300,000 sites is a lot to choose from. And each one has something different to say. You'll find a number of suggestions for making money from home including affiliate marketing, freelancing, creating your own products, network marketing and on and on. The choices are endless.

Where do you begin? Most people will just pick something that interests them, if anything. But then there is the problem of, "Okay, this is what I want to do...how do I do it?" That's where we then get into web page design, promotional tactics, and so on. There are more ways to promote a product or service online than Carter has liver pills. Problem is, some tactics work better than others to start off with. Add to that the fact that some tactics, like article writing, take skill...and you've got yourself another mess on your hands.

Who do you trust? What are you qualified to even do given your skill level? Can you increase your skill level? If so, can you find the right kind of instruction in order to make that happen? Gradually, your head full of nothing becomes a head full of stuffing. You've read and read and read until you're blue in the face. You are now more confused than ever. You know more, and at the same time, no less than when you first started simply because you have info overload...and still don't know what's good info and what's bad info.

Quite honestly, I don't know how anybody with no knowledge of business gets through this stage without somebody to take them by the hand and walk them through the process. Yes, I'm talking about a mentor or coach...whatever you want to call it.

If you find yourself in the above situation (totally confused) you might want to consider getting yourself a mentor or coach.

It just might save you from months of frustration spinning your wheels trying to figure this thing called making money online out.

In this installment of "Why Johnny Can't Make Money Online" I'm going to go over the second reason why this is so. It's called the pressure cooker syndrome. Well, that's what I call it anyway. If you're not familiar with it, don't worry...by the time you're done reading this article, you'll know EXACTLY what it is. In fact, you might find that you're suffering from it as well. Many people do.

Most folks who look to make money online think it really only comes down to two things...what you know and executing what you know. For example, you know how to write salescopy. So you simply advertise that you're a copywriter and get clients. It's that simple. And yes, in theory, it IS that simple. You take your skill, put it out there and make money doing it. I do it all the time. But then that pressure cooker syndrome gets in the way and all the knowledge in the world goes right out the window. What am I talking about?

Well, the pressure cooker is different for each person. For some, it may be that nagging wife or husband who is always complaining to you that you spend too much time on the computer and not enough time with them. People can be really possessive if they want to be. For others, maybe it's the responsibility of having another job or a child to care for. Other responsibilities can really get in the way of making a living online.

And then you've got what I call the real pressure cooker. This may be the worst of them all because there is usually little you can do to conquer this one. I'm talking about people who have serious health issues. Some folks can't even sit at their computer for more than two hours because they're in so much pain. It's really hard to make a living online when you can just about concentrate.

Point I'm trying to make is this. No matter what you know about running a business or how great your product or service is, there are always going to be external factors that will make your job harder. I have them. I've had health issues for over 20 years now. But I have learned to live with them. Some days I can't work, so I don't. The days I can, I do what I can. Fortunately, I've been able to do enough to run a successful business for over seven years now.

But some people can't. They either let these external factors get to them or they literally can't do anything about them. I truly feel for these people. However, if you have external factors that CAN be dealt with...deal with them. Don't let them take over your life. A nagging spouse can be dealt with by asking just one simple question. "Do you want to eat tomorrow?" If the bills being paid depend on you making this work, your spouse will take the hint.

External factors are sometimes hard to overcome, but they CAN be overcome.

In this first of a four part series, I'm going to explain why Johnny, or you, can't make money online. A lot of what you're going to read is going to be hard to swallow. Hearing the truth is never easy. And in this case, the problem begins at the core.

What do I mean by the core? I mean the REASON why you're getting into this business in the first place. Think the reasons don't matter? Think again. And while I can think of a zillion reasons why somebody would want to run their own home business, these are the ones that are most common.

1. Loss of job or poor paying job.

2. Excited by glamour of it.

3. True passion for some topic.

4. Greed

Let's begin with number 1 and see how this can be a stumbling block.

When a person loses a job or has a poor paying job, they are usually under a lot of stress. Why? Well, when money is tight, bills don't get paid. Maybe this means less entertainment time. Quality of life goes down. Trust me, this is not the kind of frame of mine you want to be in when running a business. Ultimately, many of the people who fall into this category crack under the stress and thus can't focus on their business.

End result...failure.

Let's move on to number 2...excited by glamour of it.

Maybe you know somebody who is running their own home business and making a killing. They have a wonderful life. They take trips and meet all kinds of people. The lifestyle is amazing. You're so drawn to it that you want to take a crack at it yourself.

Problem is, you don't see all the work that goes into the business. When you actually dive into it, you see what's involved and all of a sudden, the glamour isn't so glamorous. And since you don't really NEED the money (point 1) you're just not motivated enough to continue.

End result...failure.

Let's move onto number 3...true passion for some topic.

Let's say you're a musician and you want to start a business where you teach people how to play guitar by ear. You have a true passion for this. Problem is, you have no business sense and don't really have a drive to learn HOW to run a business. You don't want to do all the boring things. You just want to put up your great site and have people come to it to buy YOUR great product.

But they don't come because YOU don't know how to run a business and don't REALLY want to learn.

End result...failure.

Finally, we have greed. These are people who see nothing but dollar signs in their eyes and want nothing else in life. Just show them where the money is. They'll do every unethical thing to get it too.

Problem with most of these people is they either get tired of constantly having to out run the law or they get caught. The stress of this kind of life, no matter how greedy you are, can kill you.

If you are lucky enough to have thought about list building when you started your business, you can pat yourself on the back.

If you have not made this move, you should start immediately.
Building a list and keeping it, is an ongoing process. People do not have much time these days,so you need to get straight to the point without beating around the bush.

List building does not have to be a hard task.

If you run a restaurant, you can quickly build a list by offering a free recipe of your favourite dish. Do it on a weekly basis and your list will grow in a short period of time.

If you run a shoe shop, you can send your subscribers a monthly newsletter informing them about fashion trends.
Craft business can offer monthly hints on creative activities for special occasions. And so on.

Once your list builds up, you can follow the customers with special offers targeted at your specific market. Any targeted advertising is much more cost effective, than sending emails or letters to everyone. Targeted market converts better in sales.

Another way of getting new subscribers is offering certain information for members only, thus creating an exclusive club, while standard information is made available to everybody.Subscribers are made to feel privileged by being informed about discounted offers not available to a wider group.

One thing needs to be remembered: everyone receives tons of useless information, so you cannot be yet another person adding to the rubbish.

If you bombard your prospects with an unworthy newsletter, you do not show much appreciation for them, nor do you gain credibility and they are likely to remove themselves from your list at high speed.

Another thing you need to remember is to give subscribers a chance to unsubscribe. The way to do it should be made plain and clear and well visible. There is nothing more annoying than trying to remove your own
email address from a database of a particular company when it is made almost impossible or the whole process takes far too long.

By law, you are obliged to register with Information Commissioner, if you intend to collect and store personal information like email address, name and postal address. The registration requires you to pay a small fee and gives your customers peace of mind. You must not ever store credit card details.

And another thing: treat your customers like you would like to be treated. Loyalty cannot be taken for granted. Treat your customers with respect and your sales will improve. Always answer questions your clients send to you and do not dismiss them even if they are awkward. Try to answer to the best of your ability and look for the answers if you do not know them.

In one of our own businesses we managed to build a list of targeted subscribers within a few weeks. This list is still growing and became another asset of our business.

And to be honest, it is one of the biggest assets of any business.

So how do you make money online with the Internet? When people are trying to find something on the Internet, they use a search engine such as Google, Yahoo or Bing.

This means you need to have something to offer for which people will search.

You will have to create some kind of web page for it. This way the search engines can find it.

Then you have to get people to that page and convert them to a sale.

That is only takes three simple steps, which are not necessarily easy to execute.

1. Finding a product

For affiliate marketing, there are many affiliate marketing networks from which to choose. These networks are composed of companies who are willing to sell products over the Internet and pay a commission for each sale. The job of collecting money for the product and distributing the commission is done by the affiliate network. Examples of popular affiliate companies are ClickBank, LinkShare and Google Affiliate Network among many others.

2. Creating a web page

In order to promote something on the Internet you need to put up a web page somewhere. You can either host it yourself, or use a hosting company. Another option is to not host it at all, but to use a Web 2.0 site. Web 2.0 sites vary and many are free to use. On some you can simply make a page out of modules. Squidoo.com and Hubpages.com are examples of these types of sites. Or you could start a blog on Blogger.com or WordPress.com or on one of numerous other blogging portals. Finally, some Web 2.0 places let you create a complete website for free.

3. Promotion

Once you have a product and a web page, you need to direct people to your page. At the beginning of the article we talked about how people find things on the web with search engines. Getting your site found in the search pages is called search engine optimization. Having your site appear on the first page for certain keywords is one way to get your site found.

Another way is to pay for advertising. On those same search pages are ads. When people click on the ads they are taken to a landing page of the advertiser's choice. So, if you pay for an ad, you can direct people to your page. Article marketing is a third way to get searchers to your site.
