Fundraising continues through May 24th for the HERO program which will completely transform the way we play at recess. Recess should be about meeting the needs of all students during their free time. At JM, students would like to read, play board games, play sports, use the play structure, or engage in team building activities. In an effort to ensure that their time is filled with stimulating activities, we would like to bring Hero Inc. to our school in 2012-2013. Heroes will help facilitate all of these activities and also bring dance, drama, and mentorship. To raise the $28,000 needed to bring this program to the school for the 2012-13 school year, go to store.gafundraising.com and enter the code 2614303

20TH ANNIVERSARY OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN LIVING HISTORY DAY AT JOAQUIN MILLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL – A CELEBRATION OF PRIDE AND RECOGNITION
Joaquin Miller Elementary, May 18, 2012, 8:30 am-2:50 pm

Oakland, CA – Joaquin Miller Elementary School 4th Grade students, faculty and parent volunteers will celebrate the 20th Annual African-American Living History Day with a day-long celebration on May 18.

Under the guidance of the fourth grade teachers and event founders, Joyce Melton, a retired fourth grade teacher from Joaquin Miller and current resource specialist for Joaquin Miller JoAnne Cooper-Campbell, the day’s events are the culmination of several weeks of classroom instruction on the lives, culture and contributions of African Americans in California upon migrating to the west during World War II.

In preparation for African American Living History Day, students learn about the second Great Migration, the period of time between 1940 and 1970, by reading from various sources including The Great Migration by Jacob Lawrence and The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson. In addition, students benefit from the knowledge of parent volunteers who have expertise in music, crafts, cooking and storytelling from this time period all designed to help students understand the impact World War II had on African-Americans and their decisions to come to California. The celebration is designed at a walk back in time so students can experience the music, dance, quilting, mask making, cooking, and games of the era. The entire 4th Grade student body, faculty, and parents are asked to dress in clothing representing the outfits worn in 1940’s California – from iconic Rosie the Riveter work clothes to Military uniforms and other typical dress from the 1940’s.

It is our hope that you will write a story about the 20th Anniversary of Joaquin Miller Elementary School’s African-American Living History Day, highlight the events founders and show how our children can use living history as a way to further their education in a positive, constructive, exciting, and fun learning experience.

African American Living History Day is one in a series to living history day curriculum at Joaquin Miller. Every year each grade learns about an important piece of history through the concept of living history.
