I will be putting a link to the pattern here soon.

This first picture is when you finish your regular knitting, before the decrease rows (the last 3 rows). No matter what size you're making, your piece should look something like this, just smaller and less eyelets.

This photo was taken after the last row was knitted (row 11). You'll notice I've not bound off the stitches, but left them "live".

Now I've cut the yarn, leaving about 12 inches, threaded the yarn onto a yarn needle and slipped the stitches to the yarn needle.

Now I've pulled the yarn tight. You'll see that the sides pull up, naturally, along the line of stockinette stitches. You can now see the beginnings of the bootie.

Now I've sewn up the open seam to the top. This is a personal choice. You can stop where the "bound off" stitches begin, leaving the front cuff of the bootie open. This could be helpful in putting on and removing it.

This is the back seam. You take that cast on tail, thread it on a needle and sew this up.

A couple FO's

So, I started these socks at the beginning of December. Normally, it does not take me that long to knit a pair of socks, but on size 0's, and planning on making a long leg, these just took forever! I even had yarn left over! 10 grams from each ball. What can I do with 20 grams of Alpaca Sox? So, the details. Classic Elite's Alpaca Sox yarn with size 0 needles. She went through something really horrible last week and is in the process of grieving. I keep telling her I love her on the board, but I wanted to say it here too. I don't know if she reads my blog, probably not, but I thought, anyone else who knows her, post that you love her too on your blog. Let's not only get the Knitty world loving our Yorkie, lets get the Blogging world too.

I'm not going to link to her blog, because I don't want any kooks (and you know who you are) going to her blog, finding out what happened and being mean.

Yorkie, just know, I love you, I support you and I'm here for you.

This one's for you, dear.

<img style="display:block; This is Le Slouch by Wendy Bernard. Incredibly easy knit. This hat, and a twin, were made in one day each. I gave the twin to my best friend. I do not know the yarn it was knit with, as both skeins came from an SP and did not have a label. If you were the one who gave it to me, please tell me what it is! It's a one ply, think and thin. I do believe it is either 100% wool or a wool/silk blend. Lovely to work with and I just love the results. I am not going to block this, as I like the rustic look. It stays on my head quite well, but, I can put it far enough back so it doesn't mess with my bangs. I can wear it with a pony tail or my hair down. Great hat!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_agUB4TEan9M/R11swKk068I/AAAAAAAAAC8/TV9u2g0vkXo/s200/100_7583.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5142385924255312834" />

Next is a pair of socks for Patrick. Made from Classic Elite's Alpaca Sox. Great yarn to work with. A little 'fuzzy', but so far, I've not had it pill. I'm working this on size 0's, the 2 circular method and I'm knitting both at once. I taught myself how to do this from the internet and just seeing what looked logical. I'm not using any pattern, just using Patrick's measurements, my hand calculator and making it up as I go. I've not decided what type of heel I'm going to do. I just know that a heel flap does not work for me. They are always too big, making the socks slip off. I'm going to avoid SSS by knitting them together, but it sure makes for slow going sometimes. Yes, by the way, those are hangers that I bent into the shape of a foot. :)
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_agUB4TEan9M/R11swqk069I/AAAAAAAAADE/Usj3Y58Z1sU/s200/100_7591.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5142385932845247442" />

Mary, Did You Know?

I was listening to the song “Mary Did You Know” this morning when I started thinking, did she really know?

When the angel visited her and told her she would conceive and bear the Son of God, did she really know what she was in for?

Most women know that when they conceive that they are in for the ride of their lives. Pregnancy is a dangerous thing, even in this day and age of modern medicine. I can't imagine what it was like when Mary was pregnant.

When a 20 something woman, with good access to hygiene, food and medical gets pregnant, she still has to deal with morning sickness, her body stretching out to unbelievable proportions and knowing that soon she's going to be tortured for hours, if not for days, to give birth. We just know this.

Back in Mary's time, they didn't have soda crackers and ginger ale. She didn't get to lay in bed and whine, she had to get up and work. She could have been stoned to death for just being pregnant. Much as being an unwed mother is humiliating and embarrassing these days, we, at least in the United States, don't have to worry about being murdered for it.

So, after all this, she's holding her baby in her arms. For me, that was the most powerful moment in my life. Nothing has ever compared. I don't know about fathers, but I know, as a mother, that I have a bond with my children that started that day. I carried them, I went to death's door to deliver them, and I would die for them. All that for my normal, average, mortal children.

For Mary, she knew she held God in the Flesh in her arms. Her baby, her flesh, but not really her's. The Son of God, God in the Flesh, Eternal and Everlasting.

His first smile was for her, she was looking on the face of God and He was smiling on her. How many of us want God to smile on us?

His first steps. What joy that brings into a mother's heart. Yet, she knew one day that His steps would take Him away from her.

His first words. For most children, usually the first word is “no!”. I wonder what His first words were?

I love when my children tell me “I love you”. When He said that to his mother, Mary had God telling her “I love you”. More than likely, His arms would be around her. How many of us dream of that? The Bible tells me that God loves me, but to hear the words from His lips, to be in His arms?

To raise a child who didn't sass, didn't whine, did as He was told.

Mary had it good.

But......

What did she feel when He left for His ministry? She knew what He had to do. She knew He had to leave, to go spread His word, His Gospel. Remember, though, Mary was mortal. Did she worry about Him? Did she wonder if He'd have enough to eat, a place to sleep, and would He keep warm? My mom tells me that no matter how old we get, a mother never stops worrying about these things.
Was Mary there the day He was whipped? Did she have to stand and watch as He was beaten to within an inch of His life? While He was mocked and ridiculed. Humiliated in front of and by those He came to save?

How did Mary stand there and watch them nail her Son to a cross? Did having to watch that drive her close to madness? Did she want to run to Him, shove those guards away, grab Him and protect Him? She knew He had to do this. She knew He was willing to do this. But, as a mother, how did she do it? I would do anything, absolutely anything, to protect my children. I don't know if I'd have the courage to stand and watch someone hurt my child.

I do not write this to deify Mary. She was a mortal mother, as mothers are. I just want to remember what this season is really about. Joy at our Savior being born, yes. Joy and love with family and friends, yes. But, I want to truly remember the sacrifice that was made for me. When He was on the cross, Jesus knew me. He knew my name. He knew my sins. He stayed because He loves me.

My mortal brain cannot wrap completely around that. I have glimpses, every once in a while, at that waking moment in the middle of the night. And my heart breaks and rejoices at the same time.

This Christmas Season, remember why. Remember the joy of a mother holding a child and remember the anguish of a mother watching her Son die. Give all praise and honor to the One who did it all for us.

Life changes and an FO

So, I made a decision today to do something drastic. I was really tired of my hair. As you can see, it's very long. I woke up this morning with that hair wrapped around my neck and I was gagging! So, Off with her hair!
This is after my friend Laura, who has been my hair stylist for 10 years, cut off about 14 inches. The flip is natural. My color is natural too. I'm going gray, but it's hard to see because it's actually white and looks like highlights.
I joined the Second Wave Clap-a-long in August. I actually finished my Clapotis a month ago, but I've not had a chance to post the pictures yet. I finished in the car on the way to rehearsal. Here you see Alice and I singing. Yes, Alice is wearing her pajamas. This is for our church's worship team. We're a garage band! I love it.

Everything you ever wanted to know, but were afraid to ask about me!

0. I started on Saturday, the 13th of October. I'm on the 11th repeat of the straight rows.

The color changes of the yarn are NOT that noticeable in real life. The flash makes it much worse. The yarn I'm using is all hand dyed, and I'm just not that excited to change yarn every 2-4 rows, as suggested by the dyer. I'm actually liking the color blocks, anyway. At least, that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

This is a very easy to memorize pattern and fun to do. I'm hoping to be finished by this Saturday. Just depends on when I get to knit. (I have not been working every day since I started. I've only got about 10 hours of actual knitting time into it so far.)

Today, a planet was conquered and claimed!

Today, Patrick and I went to Clark Planetarium. Pretty fun place.

First, they had this audio-kinetic sculpture called Newton's Dream. Patrick spent more time with that than anywhere else. Totally worth the price of admission. (ha ha, it's free to get in)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_agUB4TEan9M/RxkJKHO0UAI/AAAAAAAAACc/WcrCf9jprcY/s400/100_7560.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5123136120455188482" />

Then he decided to conquer a planet. Mars has been claimed by Patrick. It's ours now. I think I may rename it. What should I call it?
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_agUB4TEan9M/RxkJKnO0UBI/AAAAAAAAACk/n3L8uWG5e6U/s400/100_7563.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5123136129045123090" />

Then he thought about conquering another planet, called the Apocalyptic Planet, but since everything on the surface dies of intense radiation from a nearby pulsar, he decided to leave.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_agUB4TEan9M/RxkJMHO0UCI/AAAAAAAAACs/ylNd4QbBHM0/s400/100_7565.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5123136154814926882" />

Lastly, he took a crack at doing a weather forecast. Darn.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_agUB4TEan9M/RxkJMnO0UDI/AAAAAAAAAC0/dEc8D7NDqas/s400/100_7566.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5123136163404861490" />

On the weight loss front

Ok, so. I don't do this often, but this is something I feel very strongly about and it just really bugs me to no end.

I am so tired of hearing “what a family is” from so many different sources. They stand on their soapbox, haul out their Bibles and preach on what a family is.

Frankly, no where in the Bible does it say what a family is. The Bible does have views on what a marriage is, and I'm not going there today. But, the Bible is silent on what constitutes a family. This does not stop many from preaching on what they think the Bible says, though.

Take our state “Christian” homeschooling group. Here is a quote from their statement of faith.

“We understand family to mean a male and a female, with one or more children, all related by blood (Genesis 1:26-28), though we recognize the exceptions of a single parent and adopted children (James 1:27).”

Basically, according to this statement, Jesus and his family (Mary and Joseph) are excluded. Think about it. Joseph is not Jesus' blood father. At least, if you're a Christian, you believe that. So, Mary, Joseph and Jesus could not have signed this statement of faith.

Let's look at the Bible verses they use to back up their claims.

Genesis 1:26-28 (King James Version)
26And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
27So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
28And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.”

Humm...not seeing “related by blood" in there. In fact, I see NOTHING about family in there. Just creation.

How about the “exceptions” listed.

James 1:27 (New International Version)
27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

Is it me, or do I NOT see the words exception to a family in there? I see accepts. In fact, if you look at it, this verse has nothing to do with what constitutes a family. It has to do with what Christian duty is.

This is purely a case of someone using the Bible to say what they want.

In a sermon at our church, Pastor Derwin Gray once said “Marriage is the perfect expression of God's love.” (emphasis added).

I'm sorry, but that is dead wrong. No verses to even back that statement up, because there are none. The perfect expression of God's love was the sacrifice of His Only Begotten Son for our sins. There is nothing humans can do to come even close to that!

What this all stems from is a desire to legislate morality. People desperately want to MAKE others follow the Bible. I want to MAKE those people go read Galatians and Ephesians. Legislating morality is called legalism and God is so against it, He has 2 whole books in the Bible about it.

If your marriage or family feels threatened because others live in a style that is against your religion (yes, religion, not faith), then you need to examine your marriage and your family.

My children and I are a family. I am a widow, but I did have my son out of wedlock, 2 years after my husband died. I never married my son's father. I thank God daily I didn't. I cannot sign the statement of faith because, according to them, we are an exception. We are not an exception. We are a family. We are exactly what God wants us to be.

Instant Gratification

Since I've been working on my Swan Song stole, I've had to stop several times and do something quick and easy. I need instant gratification because it feels like the darn thing is taking forever.

So, here's today's instant gratification. It's the Ice Scraper Mitt from One Skein Wonders. It's knit from Lamb's Pride Worsted in the Garnet color. I used the size needles called for (size 7) and was dead on gauge. I've never had that happen before.

Yes, it is missing the actual ice scraper. I don't have one here and I'm not going out again tonight. It's only October 1st, so I think I'm ahead of the game. If I get the scraper and get it into my car by the end of the month, I'm in good shape.

BlogStalking Assignment: Spill your guts.

Your purse guts, that is.

So, here we go.

Yes, this is what my purse looks like. Ugh!

So, last weeks assignment was to tell or show who I am. I have no pictures, at this time to do this, so you get an essay.

I am:

A Christian. First and foremost. Being a Christian defines who I am, what I do and how I try to live. I don't always succeed. I try to live by this: "Preach the Gospel everyday, if necessary, use words." In other words, if someone is not interested in my faith by watching me, nothing that comes out of my mouth will make a difference.

A mother. My job in life, at this time, is to be a mom to my two children. Sami is 15, in public school, and a social butterfly. She is beautiful, smart, loyal and fun. Since putting her in school, we have started to get along better and I am starting to enjoy having a teen daughter. Sami has taken charge of her own education and I'm proud of her. Patrick is 13 and home schooled. He is handsome, with the most gorgeous blue eyes, smart, and a defender. He also enjoys a good joke. We are having fun this year, just he and I schooling. He's becoming a young man and I am proud of him.

A daughter. Over years, my relationship with my mother has changed, but one thing has never changed. I will always be her daughter. Right now, I am taking care of her, but I still have the greatest respect for her. As I age, I marvel at the courage my mother had in the things she did for us. I don't know if I'll ever live up to who she is. She is amazing. Even in her disability, with the incredible pain she suffers from, she shows grace and strength and courage. She still mothers me, when I need it, but is also my best friend. I pray, as the years go on, I can have this same kind of relationship with my daughter.

A friend. I don't have many close friends, but those that I do have, I am loyal to. I will be the first to wade into battle when a friend is in trouble. You just don't hurt those I love. I want to take pain away from my friends. I love to do things that make them smile. I really don't do it for recognition. It's the way I say I love you to someone.

Other things I am: a knitter, a servant, a baker, a reader and an animal lover.

God is REALLY GOOD!

We just got a call from our landlord.
