A bank official and driver, three policemen steal N37 million

A bank official and driver have connived with three policemen attached to a new generation bank to steal N37 million belonging to the bank. The incident has led to a massive operation by the police which resulted in the arrest of a manager of the bank and a cash officer.

The theft has gone a long way to confirm police assertion that some banks had recruited armed robbers as employees and that most of the bank robberies were planned by insiders.

P.M.News gathered that during the operation, the suspects identified as Tony Ukaegbu (driver) Emmanuel Onyekpe (Cash Officer) and three policemen attached to the bank were assigned to transfer N37 million from the Akoka branch of the bank to the headquarters on Ajose Adeogun Street, Victoria Island, in a bullion van but they conspired and escaped with the money.

The suspects were alleged to have diverted the money to a hideout in Ajah where they reportedly abandoned the bullion van.

A bank manager (names withheld) who allegedly knew about the robbery has been arrested by detectives and is helping to unmask those behind the robbery.

Also arrested is the cash officer, Mr. Onyekpe and one of the policemen who allegedly took part in the robbery.

They are currently being interrogated at the state CID, Panti, Yaba, Lagos.

A source at CID, Panti confided in P.M.News that the operation was masterminded by a disgruntled top official of the bank.

“Look, my brother, it is an inside job and we are determined to get to the root of the robbery in a short time,” the detective told P.M.News. P.M.News gathered that the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, has mandated detectives at Panti to fish out the culprits immediately so as not to give the impression that the police had lost the battle to robbers.

Investigations revealed that the police were able to pick one of the suspects (cash officer) when he phoned the bank manager from a location on Victoria Island that the bullion van had been attacked by armed bandits in Ajah.

The police, it was learnt, traced the call to a location in Ajah and succeeded in arresting him. The attack is the first armed robbery attack on a bank this year.

Mugabe accuses Bush of 'rank hypocrisy'ZIMBABWE'S President, Robert Mugabe, in a typically fiery speech to the United Nations (UN) General Assembly accused his United States (U.S.) counterpart, George W. Bush of "rank hypocrisy" for lecturing him on human rights and likened the Guantanamo Bay prison to a concentration camp.

"His hands drip with innocent blood of many nationalities. He kills in Iraq. He kills in Afghanistan. And this is supposed to be our master on human rights?"

Mugabe, 83, in power since independence from Britain in 1980, was speaking the day after Bush scolded the governments of Belarus, Syria, Iran and North Korea as "brutal regimes" in his speech to the General Assembly.

Bush criticised the Zimbabwe government headed by Mugabe as "tyrannical" and an "assault on its people."

Critics accuse Mugabe of plunging Zimbabwe's once-thriving economy into an abyss of widespread food shortages and hyper inflation. Mugabe accuses Western countries of sabotaging the economy as punishment for his seizure of white-owned farms to resettle landless blacks.

"What rank hypocrisy," Mugabe said of Bush's speech.

World Bank pledges support for Yar'Adua's govt

World Bank pledges support for Yar'Adua's govt
PRESIDENT Umaru Musa Yar'Adua has received a commitment from the World Bank to fully support his administration.

The bank made the pledge when its President. Mr. Robert Zoellick met with Yar'Adua on Tuesday.

Making good its word, the World Bank will next month send a team of experts to Nigeria to begin discussion of new areas of assistance to the Federal Government.

The bank is made up of two development institutions - the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the International Development Association.

During their meeting at the Headquarters of the United Nations (UN), New York, President Yar'Adua said that his administration looks forward to the bank's technical support for the Federal Government's efforts to alleviate poverty by empowering more Nigerians economically.

The President also conferred with Presidents Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (Iran); Stjepan Mesic (Croatia); Susilio Bambang Yudhayono (Indonesia); Michele Bachelet (Chile) and Leonel Fernandez of the Dominican Republic.

He also held separate meetings with Presidents John Kufuour (Ghana); Laurent Gbagbo (Cote D'Ivoire); Eduardo Dos Santos (Angola) and Vice President Sastou Njie-Saidy of Gambia, reaffirming Nigeria's commitment to peace, security, political stability and economic development in the West African sub-region and other parts of Africa.

Yar'Adua told the World Bank President that speedily improving the country's infrastructure for power supply, transportation, water supply and other essential services were central to his administration's plans to create the right conditions for rapid economic growth and development.

Acknowledging the World Bank as a vital source of financial and technical assistance to developing countries, President Yar'Adua said that his administration would be glad to benefit from its expertise and experience in capacity building for poverty reduction.

Zoellick, who was accompanied by Mrs. Oby Ezekwesili, the World Bank's Executive Vice President for Africa, promised that the World Bank would fully support the Federal Government's plans to alleviate poverty and raise the living standards of all Nigerians.

Remarking that despite its power supply problems, Nigeria remain central to the resolution of the power supply difficulties of other neighbouring countries in the West African sub-region, Zoellick promised special support for power supply related projects such as the West African Gas Pipeline.

"He will help Nigeria to help itself and others in the region."

Ahead of his address to the 62nd session of the United Nations General Assembly, President Yar'Adua also held bilateral talks with other heads of state and government who are in New York for the event.

He assured the Angolan President that Nigeria would work in close collaboration with other members of the Luanda-based Gulf of Guinea Commission to secure the energy resources of the region for the primary benefit of citizens of member states.

President Umaru Yar'Adua has nominated the out-going National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Ahmadu Ali, for confirmation by the Senate as ambassador.

Also yesterday, Yar' Adua forwarded three fresh ministerial nominees, namely, Mr. Demola Seriki from Lagos State, Orubebe Peter Godsday from the South-South zone and Udo Chuka Julius from the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) to the Senate for confirmation.

Meanwhile Taraba and Kaduna states are yet to have a representative in the Federal Executive Council.

Seriki’s nomination seems to have put paid to the lingering bickering in Lagos State PDP over the ministerial slot given to the state.
Ali made the list of 62 ambassadorial nominees, which was read on the floor of the Senate yesterday by Senate President, Senator David Mark.
Others who made the list, composed of 42 politicians and 20 career diplomats, included the defeated governorship candidate of PDP in Lagos State, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, former presidential aspirant, Brigadier- General Buba Mohammed Marwa, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Professor Joy Ogwu, and former ECOMOG Commander, Major-General Timothy Shelpidi (rtd.)

In the covering letter to the list, President Yar’ Adua said the appointment of the nominees was in accordance with section 171(c) sub-section 4 of the 1999 constitution and expressed the hope that the Senate would approve their appointment expeditiously.

The Senate President appealed to his colleagues to warn the nominees not to attempt to reach any of them (senators) for the purpose of bribing them to confirm their (nominees’) appointment.

He said that the upper chamber would be fair to all nominees just like it did with the first set of ministerial nominees it screened recently.
According to him, “I must warn that you should tell your nominees that there is no need to see anybody through the back door by carrying “Ghana Must Go” bag. We did well with the previous ministerial nominees and we intend to do well with this.”
He said that the new ministerial nominees would be screened live like their counterparts via network broadcasting while the ambassadorial nominees would not get the same opportunity due to paucity of funds.

He, however, said that when the ambassadorial nominees would be screened by the Foreign Affairs Committee headed by Senator Jubril Aminu, the exercise would be recorded and air time would be bought to show it on Television for Nigerians to watch.

Dress right in a conservative suit, subdued colors, little jewelry (but real gold, or silver, or pearls), low heels (polished) and everything clean and neat. Hygiene includes combed hair, brushed teeth, deodorant and low-key scent. Check everything the night before, again before walking out the door and once again in the restroom just before the interview.

Play zombie. OK, you're nervous. But you can still smile, right? And make eye contact, yes? Sit up, focus on the interviewer, and start responding. Enthusiasm is what the interviewer wants to see.

No smoking, no gum, no drinking. This is all comfort stuff for you, and none of it helps you here. Employers are more likely to hire non-smokers. At a lunch or dinner interview, others may order drinks. You best not.

Research failure. The interview is not the time for research. Find out the company's products and services, annual sales, structure and other key information from the Internet, the public library, professional magazines or from former employees. Show that you are interested in working for the prospective employer by demonstrating knowledge about the company.

Can't articulate your own strengths and weaknesses. Only you can recognize your most valuable strengths and most hurtful weaknesses. Be able to specify your major strengths. Your weaknesses, if such must come up, should only be turned around to positives.

Winging the interview. Practice! Get a friend, a list of interview questions and a tape recorder and conduct an interview rehearsal. Include a presentation or demonstration if that will be part of the real interview. Start with introducing yourself and go all through an interview to saying good-bye. Write out any answers you have difficulty with, and practice until your delivery is smooth (but not slick).

Talk, Talk, Talk. Rambling, interrupting the interviewer and answering to a simple question with a fifteen-minute reply - all of these can be avoided if you've thought through and practiced what you want to communicate. Good answers are to the point and usually shorter.

Failure to connect yourself to the job offered. The job description details the company's needs - you connect your experiences, your talents and your strengths to the description. It answers the essential reasons for the interview - "How my education/experience/talents/strengths fit your needs and why I can do this job for you."

Not asking questions - and asking too many. Use your research to develop a set of questions that will tell you whether this is the job and the company for you. This will help you limit and focus your questions. But don't overpower the interviewer with questions about details that really won't count in the long run.

Bad-mouth anyone. Not just your present employer, or former employer, or the competition. You don't want to look like a complainer.

Asking about compensation and /or benefits too soon. Wait for the interviewer to bring up these issues - after the discussion of your qualifications and the company's needs and wants.

Failure to ask for the job. When the interviewer indicates the interview is over, convey your interest in the job and ask what the next step is.

No Indian firm Will manage the Power Holding Company of Nigeria

The two unions in the power sector had vowed not to allow any Indian firm to manage the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN). They are the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) and Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies (SSAEAC).
Officials of the unions told newsmen on Thursday in Lagos that it was a rip-off for the foreign firm to manage power in Nigeria.

Power Grid Corporation India Ltd was on Wednesday in Abuja given a five-million dollars management contract of the Transmission Company of Nigeria.

Mr. Joe Ajaero, NUEE's General Secretary, said the Indians would never be allowed to manage the electricity sector in Nigeria.

"The Indians are not welcome. We want to advise them to stay clear.

Any day they enter the transmission sector, we will leave it for them and the Bureau for Public Enterprises (BPE)," Ajaero said.

"As workers in the sector, the Indians cannot enter the sector as management contractors," he said.

He said Nigeria could enter into partnership with them but not to give them the authority to manage the sector.

Ajaero said no country had ever allowed its transmission lines to be run by foreigners because of its security implications.

The union scribe said the Indian company had tried to manage power sector in other countries but failed.

"I want to say without contradiction that the Indians are not good managers," he said.

He said experience has shown that Indians ran down the Machine Tools

Industry in Oshogbo and the Nigeria Railways, adding that bringing them through the backdoor to run the transmission lines was insensitive.

He said it was sad that this was taking place just as President Musa Yar'Adua has inaugurated a committee to implement the power sector reform.

Mr. Godwin Iheanacho, SSAEAC President, said the management of the contract ran contrary to labour regulations.

"It is also a treason because we are still in court over issues of the privatization of the PHCN, and the same company is given to a foreign firm to manage," he said.

Iheanacho described the development as undemocratic, accusing the National Council on Privatisation of not respecting the rule of law.

He lamented that it was when the sector had begun to show signs of improvement that the BPE decided to give it to an Indian firm to manage.

"For 22 years we did not add any megawatt to our grades because the government was ill-advised," he said.

He said the problem of power supply was generation and not workers.

Many residents of Port Harcourt, the main city in Nigeria's poor but oil-rich Niger Delta region, are complaining that a night-time curfew imposed more than two weeks ago has undermined their ability to make a living, although the measures do appear to have curbed spiralling violence with a drop in the number of reported gunshot injuries reported.

Port Harcourt has been wracked by violence as various armed groups battle for control of lucrative guns and oil smuggling rackets. More than 200 foreign oil workers have been taken hostage in and around Port Harcourt in the last year then freed only after paying large ransom.Job Nigeria.

"As of last week we were treating 60 cases but most of those occurred weeks early when the violence was high," Rosa Aut, head of the international aid organisation Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in Nigeria, said on 12 September.

Seven of the cases occurred recently, she said. Five were victims of indiscriminate shooting by unknown assailants in the Mile Four district of the city while two were shot by police in a street brawl during curfew hours.Jobs in Nigeria.

Violence intensified on 11 August when dozens of people were killed in gun battles. Soldiers deployed to quell the violence fought street battles with the groups and in the worst hit districts of the city thousands of people fled their homes.

The army said the fighting has been mostly between supporters of two militias operating in the city, one led by Ateke Tom; the other by Soboma George.

The curfew in Port Harcourt which runs from 7 pm until 7 am has made life hard for many people who normally work during those hours. Among those affected are craftsmen, shopkeepers, motorcycle taxi drivers and other transport operators.

"I own a roadside restaurant where people used to come to eat in the evenings," said Helen Emenike, a 34-year-old mother of three and resident of the Diobu district of the city.

"Now all my business has gone."

A minibus driver, Prieye Daminabo, said his income has fallen by more than half since the curfew took effect.

Many residents also complain about the way soldiers and policemen enforce the curfew. Residents are required to raise their hands in the air when approaching the many security checkpoints located around the city.

"Some people have been whipped by soldiers for not raising their hands quickly enough," Daminabo said

Military spokesman Maj. Sagir Musa in Port Harcourt said recently that all security forces have been instructed to be polite to civilians. ''We have told them not to harass, intimidate or victimise anybody," he said.

Thieves have kidnapped the two-year-old daughter of a Nigerian oil worker and demanded a ransom after they were disappointed with their haul of loot from the family's house, police said on Thursday.

Lagos - An armed group is holding nine local politicians hostage in southwestern Nigeria, demanding payment for helping the ruling party rig elections in April, says a spokesperson for the group.

The leaders of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo state, including a local government chairperson, were abducted on Saturday at Igbekebo town, where they were due to pick delegates for upcoming municipal election primaries.

A spokesperson for the kidnappers, who declined to be named for security reasons, said they had demanded a ransom of $4m to pay members who helped secure a landslide for the PDP in the April elections.

He said: "The government reached a political agreement with us during the elections. We fulfilled our side of the deal, but they have reneged on their part of the agreement."

11 politicians abducted

According to the spokesperson: "Some of the boys we used for the elections are stranded in our camps. We are asking the government to give us 500 million naira to demobilise them."

Originally, 11 politicians were abducted, but two were released on Monday to facilitate negotiations with the government, said the spokesperson.

April's general elections were so badly marred by vote-rigging that European Union observers said they fell "far below basic international standards" and were "not credible".

The poll result in Ondo, which gave sitting Governor Olusegun Agagu victory, was one of scores of results being challenged by opposition parties at election tribunals across the country.

A police spokesperson in Ondo state said the kidnapping was being investigated. A spokesperson for the state government was not immediately available for comment.

Polls 'billed as watershed'

The gang spokesperson threatened to release pictures of government officials meeting gang members, supplying them with weapons and rigging results in their camps.

He said: "It is a political matter that should be dealt with politically, but if they (the government) think we can be used and dumped, we will release documents that will embarrass them."

April's polls were billed as a watershed for Africa's most populous country, marking the first democratic handover of power from one civilian to another in its 47-year post-independence history.

But fraud, violence and intimidation - mostly by the PDP - were so widespread the main local observer group called the elections a "charade".

President Umaru Yar'Adua, whose victory had been challenged by the opposition, acknowledged imperfections in the election, but said he believed he had the mandate of the Nigerian people.

He promised to let the tribunals probe alleged abuses without interference and set up a 21-member panel to reform Nigeria's electoral system.
