Find out the average salary of an Occupational Therapy Assistant. If you are considering a career in this field, this is a must read!

The role of an occupational therapy assistant within a rehabilitation team is working under the direct guidance, and expertise of a registered occupational therapist. The main duty is implied within their name, they assist the therapist with duties and tasks that he or she requires assistance in. An occupational therapy assistant salary reflects the professions demand across the nation. In the United States there are an estimated 27 000 occupational therapist assistants employed. Occupational therapy commonly treats patients that suffer with mental, emotional, physical, and developmental health and well being conditions, as well as injuries. The role of occupational therapy is to improve the daily life of patients who suffer with difficulty completing everyday tasks. An occupational therapy assistant will spend their work days teaching skills, exercises, awareness, coordination, and motor patterns to patients as instructed by the occupational therapist.

An occupational therapy assistant salary is roughly 65% of what a licensed occupational therapist will earn. An occupational therapist must study a minimum of 6 years, and often 7 to complete their education, and an occupational therapy assistant studies full time for 2 years to earn their credentials. For the duration of their education, occupational therapist assistants are well paid individuals within the medical community. Typical working environments include clinics with other professionals, hospitals, specialty schools, and old age nursing homes. Occupational therapy deals heavily with those that suffer with conditions of human development, and aging. Those who graduate with an associate degree in this profession are required to have a strong knowledge base and understanding of human behavior and development.

While home health care does offer the highest salary for all careers that rank in the top 5, you should be aware that it represents olny 4% of all those employed within this career. Salary is not the only factor to have awareness of, as many jobs in hospitals offer strong benefits packages to compensate for the fact the annual salary is slightly lower.

* all estimates from the Bureau of Labor Statistics do not include self employed individuals, the annual wage has been calculated based on hourly wage x full time hours (2080 per year). Within this specific career it is not uncommon to have those who work less than 40 hours per week, and those who work over 40 hours per week. These are the averages based on a 40 hour work week.

Education Required

Programs must meet the standards set out by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE). As of 2010 there were over 130 accredited educational programs for those interested in entering the career. It should be noted that accreditation is important with regards to gaining eligibility for state license and national exams. An occupational therapist is required to carry a state license in virtually all states across the nation, and if current trends continue, this will be required in all states in the near future. The national license exam for this profession (when successfully passed) will grant the individual the title of certified occupational therapy assistant (COTA). It is best to check with the individual state occupational therapy boards, for exact requirements and eligibility for a state license.

The associate degree program is intensive, and requires 2 years of full time study for students. Students will study a heavy course load with the primary focus on areas of mental health, human development, human conditions, the process of aging, and pediatrics. Since occupational therapist assistants work in medical settings, they as well will be required have a strong knowledge base in anatomy, physiology, and best practices in health care.

Students will spend a minimum of 16 weeks in clinic as part of the curriculum. This gives students the opportunity to learn under the guidance of professional and experienced occupational therapists, and assistants. During the clinical portion students will familiarize themselves by gaining direct exposure to treating patients. To gain entry into an occupational therapy assisting program, an individual must possess a high school degree, and depending on the college or program, specific prerequisite courses may be required. All students will be required to successfully obtain their CPR and First Aid before being eligible for clinical placement.

Employment and Future Job Prospects

Statistics from the bureau of labor statistics indicate that occupational therapy assistants will see job growth that exceeds the national average. This growth will increase the overall number of those working in the profession to a total estimated to be greater than 34,000. The estimates from the Bureau of Labor Statistics states that a growth of 7,900 jobs is to take place in this profession between 2008 and 2018. This represents a growth of 30% in the number employed during those 10 years.

The demand for occupational therapy assistants has increased as the nation has a large population of elderly and aging individuals. Across the United States there will be a large number of retirees coming forward in the coming years, careers which offer therapeutic services such as occupational therapy will see a great increase in demand. With regards to the occupational therapy assistant salary, this is good news, as an increase in demand can often times come with an increase in salary. Occupational therapy assistants are seen as cost effective way of providing good quality treatment to patients by health care institutions.

A physical therapy assistant, often referred to as a “PTA” works as a therapy support worker under the supervision of licensed physical therapists. Physical therapy works to promote strength, flexibility, movement, and balance in patients who are suffering from an ailment. Patients that commonly use physical therapy may be afflicted by: injury, chronic pain patterns, back and neck pain, recovering or preparing for surgery, and those with chronic conditions that affect their ability with strength, flexibility, balance and movement. We commonly find physical therapy assistants working in physical therapy clinics, general hospitals, homes for the aged, as well as the home health care industry.

PTAs are educated individuals with strong clinical skills, this makes them strong contributing members to any health care team. They have the ability to follow the instructions given to them from a physical therapist, and use those instructions to apply treatments, clinical tasks, and exercise education for patients with little to no supervision. Clerical work can also be common for some physical therapy assistants, this can include office paper work, submitting insurance forms, and anything else required by the employer. Physical therapist assistants must have a strong knowledge of medical terminology, as they will be responsible for documenting and understanding medical charts.

A Physical therapy assistant salary is roughly 2/3 that of a physical therapist. In the United States the common length of time to complete an associate degree to be qualified to work as a physical therapy assistant is 2 years of full time study. With regards to a physical therapist, they usually spend 7 years studying to earn their credentials.

The educational requirements for a physical therapy assistant include graduation from an accredited associate degree program. An associate degree is roughly half of a bachelors degree credit and time wise. This equates to roughly 2 years of full time study. The American Physical Therapy Associations accreditation body, the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) accredits physical therapy assistant programs. In The United States are currently over 270 programs available nation wide to access education as a physical therapy assistant.

Students can expect an intensive 2 year program, in which lots of knowledge and information must be absorbed. Students can expect to study courses such as anatomy, physiology, human conditions, exercise science, and physical therapy practices. During the education there is a clinical placement of no less than 16 weeks that will be required. During those 16 weeks (more at some schools) students will have the direct opportunity to gain experience working under the guidance of licensed physical therapists. The clinical portion will prepare students for graduation, and future employment by giving them direct real work experience with patients.

Physical therapy assistants are registered health professionals in the United States, and therefor require a state license to gain employment. Part of all accredited programs will be to prepare students for the national or state license exam they must complete. Upon successful completion of a state license, graduates may enter the workforce.

Employment and Future Job Prospects

The good news for those who wish to work as physical therapy assistants, or currently are employed as, is the there is a strong demand across the nation for this profession. The growth for this career is above the national average for all professions. The Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that we should expect to see an increase of 21,200 physical therapy assistants between 2008 and 2018. This represents an increase of 33% in the number of those working as PTAs during this 10 year period.

The post world war 2 “baby boom” created a situation where the United States has a large percentage of the population that are beginning to retire. Retirement in itself does no indicate a required need for therapeutic services, but age certainly does. Those over the age of 65 are statistically far more likely to utilize and rely on the services provided by physical therapy. The high level of retirees is ever increasing the demand for physical therapy assistants. We can expect to see strong job markets in nursing homes, general, and surgical hospitals primarily, but this increase will hit the profession as a whole to a degree.

With regards to physical therapy assistant salary, entry level positions in clinics, hospitals, and nursing homes should be plentiful. Home health Care, which offers the highest physical therapy assistant salary should see expansion and new job opportunities, although the higher wages often attract experienced PTAs. The good news is that the demand for this career is forecasted to be very strong until 2018, and likely further into the future. Physical therapy assistants enjoy good employment opportunities even during times of economic struggle, which makes it an excellent career for salary and security.

Spectator sports, such professional sports teams employ a much smaller number of employees than many entering the career suspect. While these positions have prestige and involve traveling with the team, they are more difficult to come by then working for academic institutions and general medical hospitals.

* all estimates from the Bureau of Labor Statistics do not include self employed individuals, the annual wage has been calculated based on hourly wage x full time hours (2080 per year). Within this specific career it is no uncommon to have those who work less than 40 hours per week, and those who work over 40 hours per week. These are the averages based on a 40 hour work week.

Education Required

The requirements of a bachelors degree from an accredited college or university is the base requirement to gain employment an athletic trainer. A bachelors degree in exercise science or kinesiology will typically be the requirements . All programs will have a strong degree of courses in physiology, nutrition, kinesiology, biomechanics and anatomy. Those that graduate from masters degree programs will also be eligible for licensure to work as a licensed athletic trainer. According to statistics from the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) nearly 70% of those working in the profession have post graduate studies or higher. For the top positions within this industry, usually a higher education is required. The same can also be said for salary, as those with greater education often possess greater earning power.

Athletic trainers must be licensed in almost all states as of 2009, 47 states required that they be licensed or registered. The certification body is the Board of Certification for Athletic Trainers, known in short as BOC (Board of Certification). To achieve this certification a student must possess a bachelors degree in a related field, or a masters degree from an accredited athletic trainer program, followed by completing this often difficult exam. Maintaining the certification will require continuing education to be taken on a regular basis. The majority of the continuing education courses will be specific to the athletic trainer, but this will also include a number of general medical courses to upgrade the trainers overall education of the human body. Even if you reside in a state that does not require the BOC certification, it is probably best to have passed this exam for job prospects.

Employment and Future Job Prospects

The good news for those who work as athletic therapists, or plan to enter this career, employment is projected to grow at a rate much quicker than the national average according to the latest research from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number of jobs available in the health care industry within the United States continues to increase. As the population continues to age we are seeing a shift to services that can help treat and compliment this age group (who statistically are more prone to disability and injury).

The statistics estimate a growth of over 35% between 2008 and 2018. That roughly means 6000 more individuals will be employed as athletic trainers by 2018. Another trend that is growing in the USA is that there is a much greater awareness to health and conditioning. This awareness has lead to a large boom in the fitness and recreation industry, other industries where a qualified athletic therapist can find employment.

With an aging population the nation will also see heath care costs sore, and complimentary health care, and assistant careers are expected to see growth as they are a cost saving alternative to higher paid medical professionals. Job prospects for athletic trainers should see growth and new positions in health care (general hospitals, physical therapy clinics). We do not expect to see an expansion of the employment pool for those working for professional sports teams. This will most likely be the most competitive job sector, as the amount of jobs available has currently hit a ceiling.

The bottom line for an athletic trainer is that they have numerous opportunities, whether in health care, or in a teaching type setting, an athletic trainer salary remains relatively low when compared to other careers in the rehabilitation industry. The good news is demand often brings an increase in salary.

A home health aide salary can be described entry level for all professions, yet those who work as home health aides take great pride in the job that they do. Home health aides are seen as cost effective for families who have a sick or aging individual cared for within the privacy of their own home. This has created a tremendous demand for this specialty, and with nearly 1 million American’s employed as home health aides it shows the demand for this type of service. Estimates from the U.S. governments Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the career will see 50% growth by 2018, which means we may see closer to 1.4 million individuals employed as home health aides.

There is currently no formal education required to work as a home health aide, besides graduation from high school, although a nursing certificate will be very helpful. Certificate programs for nursing assistants are available all across the nation, and these will teach the basics that will be required for working in this profession. Also there is a voluntary certification provided by the National Association for Home Care and Hospice, which can be seen as an asset by many organizations.

This page has been created to be utilized to provide a break down of home health aide salary by state and industry.
